The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's get into it.
Honestly, looking at the next 16 days, it’s a tough stretch for Little Makaha. We’re looking at a long, lean run with barely a ripple to get excited about for the first week.
The forecast kicks off on Saturday, July 18th, and it’s flat. Tiny, weak waves from the WNW 1ft to 1ft, with a 13-second period, but the cross-off wind from the ENE is a killer. That combined energy is pathetic, sitting at 90 and then dropping to 39. It’s just not worth paddling out. Sunday and Monday are the same story – tiny 0.7ft to 1.0ft waves with short periods, and the wind is still cross-off. The energy is barely registering (19 to 42). This is a total blank.
We stay in the gutter through the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th. The swell literally disappears on the 22nd, and when it comes back on the 23rd, it’s a weak 1.0ft from the SW. The wind is still up, fresh from the ENE, keeping things messy. By Friday the 24th, the energy finally bumps up to 162, but it’s still a weak 2ft SW groundswell with a 17-second period, so it’ll be wrapping around but not with much punch. Still no good.
Then, we get a glimmer. Around Saturday, July 25th, there’s a pulse of short-period NE swell hitting 5ft (energy of 276). The wind is there, but it’s a cross-off. The file calls it "marginal," and I’d agree. It’s a short period (8 seconds), so it’ll be a bit fat and dumpy, not the clean, lined-up wave this reef wants. The best of that little pulse might be the Sunday morning session on the 26th, with 5ft and a bit lighter wind at 13 mph, but it’s still not a standout. The combined energy sits at 264, which is moderate, but the short period is a problem.
There’s a flicker on Thursday, July 30th, in the afternoon. A 5ft NE swell with a 11-second period and a lighter breeze of 9 mph. The energy jumps to 520, which is moderate. That’s the only real moment that looks interesting, but it’s marked as "marginal," so don’t get your hopes up too high.
The rest of the run into the first week of August is just more of the same: small, weak, and short-period. The swell is there, but it’s junk. Honestly, for a break that’s a consistent reef, this is a rare poor run. For a beginner spot, there’s maybe a session or two on the 26th when it’s under 5ft, but the wind and short period will make it tricky. For anyone else, it’s a write-off. There’s nothing here that’s a true standout.
Rusty.
