The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s cut straight to it – not much happening in our part of the world over the next couple of weeks. The whole 16-day window looks pretty flat and lacklustre, with only a couple of brief moments that might be worth a look. If you’ve got the itch, you’ll be scratching for a long time between waves.
We kick things off with no surf to speak of – nothing worth paddling out for until the 20th of August. That’s a solid three-day gap at the start with zero recommendations. The first break on the rotation is Little Makaha – it’s a beginner-friendly reef break, fairly exposed to swell, and it loves a NW direction. Water temp is sitting around 80°, pretty average for the time of year, so nothing weird going on there.
On Thursday the 20th of August, conditions lift from terrible to barely surfable, with a weak 1 ft swell coming out of the SW at 17 to 18 seconds. That’s a long-period groundswell, so the energy will be drawn out, with long lulls between sets. The combined swell energy is weak to moderate (119 to 134), so it’s not going to have much punch. Winds are cross-off from the NE at 9 mph, which at least keeps the surface clean. Honestly, it’s small and ordinary, but if you’re keen to wet the board, those long period lines might offer a few mushy corners. It’s not a standout by any stretch.
Friday the 21st of August morning sees a similar story – 1 ft SW swell, 17s period, combined energy up to 174, so the energy is a touch more present but still weak to moderate. The wind stays cross-off and light at 9 mph, keeping it clean. You might get a couple of rides if you’re patient, but “surfable but very ordinary” is the honest call.
After that, from Friday afternoon right through the rest of the period, it’s back to poor conditions. The swell drops, the wind picks up – fresh breezes from the ENE at 15 to 25 mph – and the wave heights hover around 0.3 ft to 2 ft. The energy readings sink into the double digits and single digits, which tells you there’s hardly anything moving out there. Saturday 22nd through to Sunday 31st August and into September 1st, it’s all small, weak, and blown out. A couple of NW swells pop up late in the window (1 ft to 2 ft, 11 to 15s period), but with those strong trade breezes, it’s not worth the paddle.
Look, the only time you might consider a session here is the Thursday morning and Friday morning (20th and 21st of August) when the light ENE winds and that long-period SW groundswell offer a clean, albeit tiny, window. It’s flat, it’s frustrating, but that’s the hand we’ve been dealt. Forecasts can change though.
Stay patient, Rusty.
