The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at the surf outlook for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I’m a bit bummed to say this, but we’ve got a long, quiet stretch ahead. The next decent surf isn't really on the cards for a while. We’re looking at a real dry spell of poor conditions from now until late July. There’s very little energy in the water, and the wind is a persistent cross-off from the ENE, which just isn't doing us any favors at the breaks that are open.
Our first real chance to wet a line comes on Monday, July 13th, but even then it’s a tough call. Little Makaha is a reef break that’s consistent and fairly exposed, but it's a beginner spot. The swell is tiny, only 2 feet from the SW, and the combined energy is weak (184). The water is a warm 79°, which is about average for the time of year. The wind is a moderate cross-off, so the surf is clean, but there’s just no power. It’s a poor surf condition, and not one to get excited about. The afternoon offers a little more size at 5 feet, but it’s a short-period, windswell from the NE with a period of just 7 seconds, and the energy is moderate (396), but it’s still a marginal call. Crowds are often a factor here, so expect company for not much reward.
The pattern continues all week. Tuesday and Wednesday stay small and marginal. The waves are cross-off and clean, but the swell is either too small or too short-period to be any fun. By Thursday, July 16th, the wind picks up to a fresh breeze, and the swell drops to 2 feet. The energy is a paltry 134 on Thursday afternoon. This trend of poor surf and moderate to fresh ENE winds carries right through the weekend and into the following week. The combined energy values drop through the floor, into the double digits, signifying a very weak wave state.
We see a bit of a pulse of energy on the 25th of July, with another 5 feet NE windswell showing up, but it’s still short-period (7 seconds) and the data flags it as poor or marginal. The wind is a little lighter, a gentle breeze from the NE on the morning of the 25th, but the quality isn’t there. After that, it’s back to the same story of small, weak swell through the end of the forecast period.
The long-range outlook into the 23rd and 24th of July teases a longer period swell (21 seconds) from the SW, but the height is only 1 foot. The energy is moderate (108), but it’s just too small. For a break like Little Makaha, which is a reef, that long-period energy would be nice, but you need a bit of size to make it work. It’s a promising but very uncertain one to keep an eye on.
For this entire 16-day window, there’s nothing I’d circle as a standout. It’s a long, flat run. The breaks are consistent, so the potential is there, but for now, the forecasts are just not delivering. Hang loose, keep an eye on the charts, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
