The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get real about Little Makaha. I’m Rusty, and I’ve been watching this stretch of reef for a long time. What we’ve got here for the next 16 days is a pretty quiet run, so let’s not sugarcoat it. The water temp is sitting at 79°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Right now, through the start of the period, it’s looking flat and wind-affected. The trade winds are blowing cross-off from the ENE, but the swell just isn’t there. Waves are tiny, around 1 to 2 ft, with weak energy (combined energy in the low 100s to 200s). The wave period is decent for the size, but the quality is poor, and the energy just isn’t enough to push anything worth paddling for. We’re looking at a gap of several days with no real surf to speak of.
Friday the 17th shows a little bump in the morning – 4 ft from the NE, but the period is a short 7 seconds, so it’s going to be a bit weak and wobbly. The energy is moderate (228), but the wind is still blowing 25 km/h from the ENE, making it cross-off. It’s not great, but if you’re desperate, you might find a few knee-high lumps.
Then we go into another dry spell. From Saturday the 18th all the way through to Wednesday the 24th, it’s mostly flat, with waves under 2 ft and very low energy numbers (often below 100). The wind stays up, and the swell direction is all over the place – mostly west or southwest, but not enough to light up the reef.
The one standout, if you can call it that, is Thursday the 30th. Both morning and afternoon, we’re looking at 5 ft from the NE with a period of 8 to 9 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 364 and 318, which is moderate. The wind is still cross-off from the ENE at 20 km/h, so it’ll be a bit lumpy, but this is the biggest surf we’ll see in the entire window. The break is a consistent reef, so it handles the swell well, but keep in mind that NE swell isn’t the optimum direction for Little Makaha – it prefers NW. Still, for the size, it might be worth a look if you’re a beginner. It’s not too big for you, but it’s not great either.
Honestly, this is a flat period for Little Makaha. The waves are small, the wind is persistent, and the energy is mostly weak. There’s no real standout. If you’re keen, the 30th is your best bet, but don’t expect much. The consistent nature of the break means it’ll pick up eventually, but for now, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
