The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window for Ka'anapali Point is a tough one to write. We're looking at a long stretch of pretty ordinary conditions, so let's not sugarcoat it.
The overall pattern is flat and weak. There’s a big gap of nothing happening. The first week and a half is basically a write-off for any decent surf. From Thursday the 20th of August right through to the end of the month, we’re looking at tiny, weak swell and persistent cross-off breezes. The water is a warm 80°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year, but that's about the only highlight.
The swell energy is mostly in the low two-digit range, barely cracking 100 (126) on the first Thursday, and it just drops from there. By Monday the 24th, it's down to 46, and it stays in the teens and twenties for days. The swell is small, mostly 1ft, and the period is all over the place, but the size is just too small to get excited about. The wind is a constant cross-off from the ENE or NE, which keeps the surface clean but does nothing to help the tiny waves. It's a long, quiet spell.
The only flicker of something interesting comes in the second week, on Thursday the 3rd of September. A bit of a WNW swell pops up, with an energy reading of 214 (moderate) on the Thursday afternoon, and then it bumps up to 278 on Friday the 4th morning. Swell height is still only 2ft, but the period is a solid 16 seconds, meaning it's a proper groundswell. The wind is light and cross from the NNE, so it could be surfable, but the forecast still calls it "poor" or "marginal." It's a tiny window, and far out, so don't bet the farm on it.
Overall, this is a lean period. If you're a beginner, the tiny, clean conditions on the 20th and 21st might be okay for a splash, but for anyone wanting a proper wave, you're better off waiting. The forecasts can always change, but right now, it's a long wait for not much.
Rusty.
