The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s cut through the noise and get real about the stretch ahead. We’ve got a 16-day window, and I’ll be honest with you: the first week is a bit of a grind. We’re looking at a lot of small, weak surf with only a couple of windows that are actually worth your time. But hold on, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.
The opening days are a struggle. Tuesday the 18th has some tiny 3ft waves with a short 8-second period, and the wind is going to be messing with things. The energy is weak at 127, and it’s just not doing anything for me. The water temp is sitting at 50°, which is about a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so the wetsuit isn't going to be the problem.
We get a brief flash of life on Wednesday morning the 19th. The wind goes glassy, and a 4ft swell from the SE with a long 14-second period rolls in. The energy jumps to 507. This is the standout for the first week. Lighthouse Reef (Big Island) is exposed to the swell, and while it’s inconsistent, when it does break, it’ll have some push. This is your window, but be aware it's an advanced spot. If you're not confident, give it a miss.
After that, it's a proper dry spell. From Wednesday afternoon right through to the end of August, it’s mostly junk. We see days with swell under 2ft, short periods, and cross-onshore winds chopping things up. The combined energy is often under 150, which is weak. There's a lot of "clean" conditions, but you can't surf clean flatness. Don't get your hopes up for the 22nd or 23rd either. Strong offshore winds will make it look inviting, but the swell is non-existent, with significant readings around 0.6ft to 2ft.
This poor run continues for a solid week, basically until the start of September. It's a blank run, which does happen for this area. But hang tight.
Then things start to shift. On Tuesday, September 1st, the afternoon session looks promising. The swell bumps up to 5ft from the SE with a period of 8 seconds. That’s not a groundswell, but the energy has jumped to 247, and the wind is clean and offshore. It’s labelled as "good surf conditions," and it’ll be the best the break has seen. The period is short, so it'll be a bit peaky, but there should be some rideable waves.
The real gem, though, is the next morning. Wednesday, September 2nd, is looking like the pick of the entire forecast. The wind is forecast to be glassy with a 4ft swell from the ESE, and the period has stretched out to a very long 15 seconds. The combined energy is a solid 359. This is the groundswell we've been waiting for. This long period suggests a lot of energy and good shape. The only caveat is that it’s coming from the ESE, which isn't the optimum for this spot (it prefers ENE), and the long period might make it break a bit straight. But with glassy conditions, you have to be there. It’s a promise, not a guarantee, but it's the one to circle on the calendar.
So, to sum it up: the next week is about patience. Hunt down that Wednesday morning window on the 19th. Then, gear up for the start of September. The 1st has potential, but Tuesday the 2nd is the one with the most juice, provided the forecast holds. It's far out, so treat it as promising but not set in stone.
Rusty out.
