The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down. The water’s a touch warmer than normal, around 50°, which is a nice start.
We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but the wait is worth it. The first real action kicks off on Thursday the 20th. It’s not a standout, but Te-Oka Bay (Banks Peninsula) will have a 5ft S swell, with a 12-second period. The wind is light from the SSW, so it’s onshore, and the energy is moderate (914). The surf is a bit marginal, so it’s more for the keen grommets. Friday the 21st looks a little better. We’ve got a 5ft S swell dropping to 4ft, still with a 12-second period, and the wind swings to a light NE cross-off. That’s clean, and the energy is moderate (605 and 442). It’s still a mellow, beginner-friendly wave.
The weekend is small and ordinary. Saturday the 22nd has a 3ft S swell dropping to 3ft, with a nor’ly offshore breeze, but the swell is weak (169 and 133). Sunday the 23rd is a write-off with a messy 4ft WSW windswell and a horrible 5-second period. The energy is weak (120). Don’t bother.
Now, here’s the first real standout. Monday the 24th. This is the one. A solid 10ft SSW groundswell hits in the morning, dropping to 8ft in the afternoon. The period is a punchy 12 seconds, and the morning energy is strong (3008). The wind is light N offshore, so it’ll be clean and lined up. This is a big swell for the area, over 8ft, so it’s for experienced surfers only. The light offshore wind will make it glassy. A proper session.
Tuesday the 25th is a step down, with a 3ft SSW swell in the morning, but the period is a very long 15 seconds. The energy is moderate (491). The wind is light cross-off, so it’ll be clean, but that long period means the sets will be fat and slow at the beach. Better for the more defined parts of the bay. The afternoon picks up to 4ft but the wind gets a bit stronger.
The middle of the week fades a bit. Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th have small, average surf with light cross-off winds. Thursday the 27th afternoon has a cleaner 4ft SSW swell, with a 10-second period, and a light offshore breeze. The energy is moderate (333). It’s surfable.
Friday the 28th has a sneaky 6ft SSW swell in the morning, with a 13-second period and moderate energy (1188). The wind is a cross-off from the NE, so it’ll be clean. Worth a paddle if you’ve got the time.
Now, the second week gets wild. Saturday the 29th of August is a massive call. A 16ft S groundswell is forecast, with a 15-second period. The energy is extreme (11471 in the morning, 23644 in the afternoon). The wind is offshore from the N in the morning, then cross-off from the NW. This is an absolute monster. It’s way too big for this break, only for the most experienced big-wave chargers, and even then, it’s a serious risk. The tide and wind are favorable, but the size is the story.
Sunday the 30th is still massive but more manageable. A 10ft S swell, with a 14-second period, and the energy is still very strong (3869 in the morning). The wind goes light from the SE, becoming glassy in the afternoon. This is a solid, clean set-up for experienced surfers, with glassy conditions. The afternoon is glassy perfection.
Monday the 31st is another 12ft to 10ft day, but the wind is onshore from the S and SSW, making it a bit of a mess. Tuesday the 1st of September is a write-off with strong onshore winds and rain. The rest of the week is small and clean, with a 6ft SSW swell arriving on Friday the 4th, with a 10-second period and moderate energy (618). The wind is light NE cross-off, so it’s a nice, clean end to the period.
The standout is Monday the 24th for a big, clean, offshore session, and the glassy 10ft swell on Sunday the 30th is a close second for experienced surfers.
Rusty.
