The Lowdown
Alright, mates, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the next stretch. It’s gonna be a slow grind for the most part, with a couple of windows that look worth circling on the calendar. The water’s sitting at 50°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so that’s a small win to start with.
The first week is pretty bleak. We’ve got a long gap with basically nothing on offer. For days on end, the swell’s tiny, the energy’s weak, and the wind’s doing its best to mess things up. Don’t get excited about Tuesday the 18th; the morning has a bit of knee-high slop, but it’s ordinary at best. The afternoon brings a bit more size but it’s crossed up and choppy. Wednesday the 19th morning is the first real tease – a glassy 4ft of SE swell with a solid 14-second period. It’ll look clean, but it’s a fleeting moment. That’s about as good as it gets for a long while.
From Thursday the 20th right through to the end of the month, it’s a proper flat spell. This is a real test of patience. There’s a brief pulse of energy on Sunday the 23rd afternoon with 2ft and offshore wind, but it’s a one-off and not worth paddling out for. The second week continues this theme of struggling to find anything rideable. A few mornings have clean surfaces, but there’s just no push behind them.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Mark your calendars for Tuesday the 1st of September. The afternoon finally delivers. We’re looking at 5ft of SE swell, and the energy is solid. The wind’s offshore and it’s clean. This is the standout of the whole period. And if you can score the Wednesday the 2nd morning session, even better. The swell has backed off slightly to 4ft, but it’s glassy, and the energy is strong. This is the best combo of size, clean conditions, and energy we see in the whole 16-day window.
For the standout, I’m looking at Jacks Point on Wednesday morning. The swell is 4ft from the ESE, and with that glassy surface, it’s going to be picture-perfect. The 9-second period is a bit short, so it might be a little crumbly, but with the conditions as good as they are, it’s the pick of the bunch. It’s a reef break, so it’ll hold the swell better than a beachie anyway, and it’s fairly consistent. Crowds are sometimes a factor here, so you might have some company, but for a wave this clean, it’s worth it.
The Tuesday afternoon is also a solid shout if you can’t make the morning session. Slightly bigger, but with a little more breeze on it. The long-range stuff is promising, but keep in mind these later calls are less certain. For now, that Wednesday morning window is the one to set your alarm for.
Rusty out.
