The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ over the next couple weeks.
To be straight with you, it’s gonna be a long, flat spell for us. We’ve got a solid 16 days ahead, and honestly, there’s nothing on offer that I’d call a proper surf. The whole window is a washout for riding waves. That first morning, Saturday July 18th, we’ve got barely a bump—0.7 ft swell out of the ESE with a weak period of 8 seconds and combined swell energy is a limp 13. It’s just not enough to do anything with. The water temp is sitting at 83°F, which is a dead average for this time of year.
The story doesn’t change for days. Through the 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st of July and beyond, the swell stays small—between 0.7 ft and 3 ft—and the period is consistently short, mostly under 8 seconds. This is all short-period wind chop, not groundswell. There is no energy to speak of. The combined swell energy values are all below 100, mostly in the teens and twenties and forties, which is weak stuff.
We do see the swell height creep up to 3 ft on the 22nd morning with a bit more energy—108 in the combined reading—which at least registers as moderate. But that’s paired with a SE wind that creates cross-shore chop. Not clean. Not surfable.
Then from the 23rd onward, it’s the same story: tiny swell, either clean but too small, or blown out by onshore winds. The 27th afternoon flirts with a glassy moment—S light airs—but the wave height is only 1 ft. It’s pretty, but unrideable.
Look, Lighthouse is a sandbar setup, fairly exposed to the east, but the optimum swell direction is out of the E and the swell we get is mostly ESE or SE, which isn’t matching up right. The consistency is fairly consistent here, but when the ocean delivers this little, even a consistent spot can’t do a thing.
This is just one of those periods where Mother Nature has the parking brake on. You’re better off leaving the board in the car. Forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing to get excited about.
Rusty.
