The Lowdown
Alright, I’m looking at the charts for the next couple of weeks, and to be honest, mate, it's a pretty quiet stretch. There’s nothing pumping, no big swell on the horizon. The first solid chance to get a wet suit on isn't until Wednesday the 29th of July, and even then, it’s a marginal call. Before that, we’ve got about a week and a half of flat, small, or messy conditions. That’s a long gap, but for this spot, a blank run like this isn't that unusual.
We’re looking at Lighthouse. It’s a sandbar setup, fairly consistent but with a crowd factor that’s just “sometimes,” so you can usually find a peak to yourself. The water temp is sitting at a warm 83°, right about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
The only real standout in this whole window is the afternoon of Wednesday the 29th of July. We’ve got a tiny 1ft swell from the ESE with a period of 8 seconds, but the real kicker is the wind. It’s dead calm—glassy conditions. The combined energy is a weak 70 (moderate wave energy), but those glassy conditions will make it look way better than it should. It’s surfable, just very ordinary. For a beginner at Lighthouse, this would be a fun, safe little session.
The rest of the period is a write-off. You get some clean mornings with offshore or light winds on the 23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th, and 27th, but the swell is tiny—1ft to 2ft at best. The periods are short, mostly 4 to 8 seconds, so there’s no push. The winds switch around to cross or cross-on in the afternoons, making it choppy and lumpy. On the 24th of July, we get a glassy Friday morning with 2ft from the ESE, but it’s still just too small to get excited about.
Heading into the first week of August, it’s even smaller. The morning of Sunday the 2nd of August is glassy again with a 1ft ESE swell, but it’s barely a ripple. There’s just not enough energy to ride.
So, if you’re desperate, pencil in the afternoon of Wednesday the 29th of July. Glassy conditions and a tiny wave for a quiet paddle. Otherwise, keep your gear in the shed and wait for a better run.
