The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here with the hard truth. Looking down the line for La Marina, and it’s about as flat as a pancake. There’s nothing but a long stretch of small, weak, ordinary conditions ahead of us. If you were hoping for a score, you’d better bring a book.
The only window with any real grunt is around Friday, the 21st. Even then, it’s not a classic, but it’s all we’ve got. The water’s an unusually warm 83°, running about 9° warmer than normal for this time of year. It’s a warm bath out there, so the wait won’t be unpleasant.
First sign of life arrives Friday morning on the 21st. The swell pushes up to 3ft out of the south, with a short 5-second period. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the northwest, so it will be clean, but the energy is only weak at 60. It’s surfable, nothing more. Friday afternoon is the pick of the lot: the swell tickles up to 3ft from the south-southwest, still a short 6 seconds, but the wind turns glassy. That’s your best chance for a proper session. The waves will be soft, but at least they’ll be there.
Saturday the 22nd holds onto a bit of size early, with 2ft from the south-southwest and a 6-second period, but the energy drops to 28. It’s still clean with a light cross-offshore breeze. After that, the tap shuts off completely.
From Saturday afternoon through the following week, it’s flat-out nothing. We’re talking days and days with no surf on offer, which is a long dry run for this spot. We catch a tiny glimpse of something on Tuesday the 25th afternoon with only 1ft, but you’ll look at it and laugh. The swell never gets above 1ft through the end of the month and into the first week of September.
There’s a strong offshore blow on Thursday the 27th, hitting 19 mph, but there’s no swell whatsoever, so it’ll just make the ocean look like a mirror. The final stretch of the forecast doesn’t offer anything better than 1ft of weak southern slop.
So here’s the bottom line: it’s a poor outlook, plain and simple. If you absolutely need a wet suit, make your move on Friday the 21st, right before that glassy afternoon hits. Otherwise, you’re better off staying dry and waiting for the next proper swell to show.
Rusty.
