The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window for Kiholo Bay is a tough one. We're looking at a long stretch of nothing much, so don't get your hopes up.
The pattern starts off quiet and stays that way. We've got a gap right from the beginning with no real surf to speak of. The first few days are a write-off with tiny, weak waves. Saturday the 22nd, you're looking at a 1.0ft swell from the SW with a long 15-second period, but the energy is a measly (70) and the conditions are just poor. The afternoon gets glassy but the wave is only 2ft – barely a ripple. The water temp is sitting at 82°, which is about 2° warmer than normal for this time of year, so it's a bit bath-like but nothing too crazy.
Sunday the 23rd offers a tiny bit more energy with a 2ft WNW swell at 12 seconds, but the morning is a cross-onshore mess. The afternoon cleans up to glassy, but the wave drops back to 1ft. The energy jumps to (109) for a moment, but it's still not enough to get excited about.
From Monday the 24th through to the end of August, the swell almost completely shuts down. Monday morning gives us a 0.7ft from the WNW with a pathetic energy of (13). There's a few tiny pulses here and there – a 0.7ft on the 30th, a 1.0ft on the 31st with a 15-second period – but the energy never gets above (34). It's all poor surf conditions, man. The best you can hope for is a glassy surface with no waves.
September starts with a whimper. The 1st and 2nd are flat, a 0.3ft SW swell on the 3rd with a 14-second period but energy of only (7) – nothing is happening. The 4th and 5th pick up a little 1.0ft to 1ft N swell, but the wind is howling. On the 5th, we're looking at 15-22 mph cross-shore winds, creating a lumpy chop. Forget about a decent surf.
Then on the 6th of September, things get wild. The morning sees a severe gale from the NNE at 47 mph, and the afternoon is a strong breeze at 25 mph from the S. The wave is still only 1.0ft with a combined energy of (30) and (25). The afternoon is actually described as "clean" with a cross-offshore wind, but with that tiny swell, it's more of a wind-check than a surf session. The whole setup is so wind-affected that it looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
So, the honest truth? There are no standout days. No true best on offer. This is a blank run for Kiholo Bay – a 16-day stretch where you're better off doing something else. The consistency is lacking, and the few tiny pulses that come through are ruined by wind or are just too small. It's a normal pattern for this area when the swell windows are closed, so don't be too surprised. Forecasts can change, but as it stands, leave the board at home.
Rusty.
