The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty comin' at ya from the Big Island. Let's talk about what's on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
Alright, truth be told, we're lookin' at a pretty flat spell for a while here. The first decent sign of life doesn't pop up until we're well into the first week of September. So, for the next week or so, you're gonna be staring at flat, glassy water with barely a ripple. It's a bummer, I know, but that's how it goes sometimes.
The first real action we see is on Thursday, September 3rd, and it's a tease. A new long-period groundswell starts to show up at Kiholo Bay, a WNW swell around 1 ft, but it's coming with a period of 21 seconds and a combined energy of 207 - that's got some deep-ocean power behind it. The wind is light offshore from the NW, so it could be clean, but the swell is just too small and the period is so long it'll be hard to get a decent wave face. Still, it's a sign of things to come.
Now, Friday, September 4th, is where it gets a little more interesting. The swell builds, with a 3 ft W swell rolling in and a period of 16 seconds. The energy jumps to 560 (moderate wave energy). The wind stays light from the WNW in the morning, keeping it clean. Honestly, this is the best of the bunch. It's not huge, but for a spot that's been flat, it's a welcome change. The water temp is a toasty 82°, which is about normal for this time of year.
The crowd situation at Kiholo Bay can be a bit of a toss-up; sometimes it's on, sometimes it's not. Keep an eye on it. It's a beach and point setup, so that long-period swell (over 15 seconds) might actually wrap around the point better than it would at a straight beach break.
So, if you're itching to get wet, your best bet is going to be Friday, September 4th at Kiholo Bay. It's a one-day wonder, and the weekend after that looks like it's back to the drawing board with more flat, glassy conditions. It's a long-range call, so don't bet the house on it, but it's the only real highlight on the horizon.
Rusty.
