The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this 16-day window at Kiholo Bay is a tough one. The swell energy is weak, barely registering most days, and the wave heights are tiny. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor surf conditions, with only a fleeting moment of something slightly better.
The water temperature is sitting at 81°, which is about average for this time of year. Not too hot, not too cold.
The first few days are a write-off. Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th offer nothing but small, weak waves with poor conditions. The swell is weak, with combined energy only around 48 to 87. Friday through Sunday the 22nd stay in the same boat – tiny surf, though late Saturday and Sunday morning we see a bit of a glimmer. On Sunday the 23rd, we get a small bump. The morning brings a 2 ft WNW swell with a period of 11 seconds, and combined energy climbing to 104 – that’s moderate energy, for what it’s worth. The wind is glassy, so it’s clean, but the waves are still very ordinary. It’s surfable, but nothing to get excited about.
After that, it’s back to flat. From Monday the 24th all the way through to Wednesday the 2nd of September, the swell drops to 0.7 ft or 1.0 ft, with combined energy barely cracking 30. The wind is light and often offshore or glassy, which would be great if there were any waves. There are none. This is a long, blank run.
Then on Thursday the 3rd of September, we see a tiny pulse of 1 ft swell from the WNW, with a 14-second period and combined energy up to 64. It’s still poor, but it’s the most promising we’ve seen in a while. If you’re desperate, you could paddle out, but don’t expect much.
Honestly, this stretch is a bust. If you’re a kiter, the light winds and occasional glassy conditions might be more interesting, but for pure surfing, there’s nothing worth chasing. Keep an eye on the forecasts, because it can’t stay this flat forever.
Rusty.
