Alright, this is Rusty, and I’ve got a look at the surf ahead for us here. Let’s be straight: the next sixteen days are a real mixed bag. It’s going to take some patience, because the first week is mostly a write-off. The good news is there’s a window of better energy late in the run, but it’s not a guaranteed classic.
Starting out, we’re looking at a flat spell. Sunday the 5th and Monday the 6th have nothing doing – just tiny, weak bumps with cross-onshore wind. The swell is basically non-existent, with a combined wave energy reading of (0 to 2) for those first couple of days. Not worth getting wet. The wind stays light and criss-cross through Tuesday the 7th, and while Wednesday the 8th afternoon goes glassy, the swell is still a whisper at 0.3 ft from the west with a 16-second period. That’s a groundswell, but with no size, it’s just a tease. The water temp feels about average for this time of year.
The real change doesn’t happen until the weekend. By Saturday the 11th, we start to see a pulse of energy. The combined energy climbs into the triple digits (111) with knee-to-waist-high 1 ft swell from the west, but the wind is messy, cross-onshore. It’s not clean enough to get excited about.
The best chance we have in this whole outlook falls on Sunday the 12th of July. We get a 1 ft swell from the southwest with a very long 16-second period, and by the afternoon it goes glassy. That’s the standout. Kiholo Bay (Big Island) will be clean, with that long-period groundswell wrapping in. It’s not a big wave, but for a point break setup, that long period will give it some shape and push. The combined energy is a moderate 144. Just know it’s an inconsistent spot to begin with, so patience is key. The best of the incoming swell direction matches the break’s optimum from the WNW perfectly, which helps.
Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th see the swell size bump up a little to 2 ft and 3 ft, but the winds get fluky again with rain showers, and the conditions are only rated as marginal. By Wednesday the 15th, the swell stays around 3 ft from the west with a 16-second period, bringing a combined energy of 339 (moderate), but the wind is onshore. It’s not clean paddle-surfing.
The tail end of the window, around Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th, offers some last chances. Thursday afternoon goes glassy with a 2 ft west swell (215 energy) – that’s another solid opportunity for a clean, small-wave session. Friday afternoon is similar, glassy with 2 ft swell.
After that, it fades back to flat, small stuff by Sunday the 19th. The combined energy drops below 100 again. So overall, if you want the best shot, focus on Sunday the 12th for the cleanest conditions, or the glassy afternoons on the 16th and 17th. The rest is a waiting game.
Rusty.
