The Lowdown
Alright, lemme level with you. Kiholo Bay’s got a 16-day window that’s mostly flat with a few tiny bumps that’ll tease you. Let’s call it like it is.
Starting Friday, you got a weak 2ft swell from the west, 10-second period, and a cross-onshore breeze messing it up. The combined energy is 52—moderate, but the waves are a bust. Water’s a warm 82°, about normal for this time.
Saturday: 1ft from the southwest with a 15-second period, but it’s barely a ripple. Energy’s 70. Afternoon goes glassy but the swell stays a tiny 2ft. You’d be floating.
Sunday morning the 23rd is the only real blip: 2ft from the west-northwest (12-second period) with combined energy of 111 (moderate wave energy). That’s your best shot—small but with cleaner conditions. Afternoon glassy, but swell drops to 1ft.
Then the well runs dry. From Monday the 24th through August 31st, it’s mostly flat. Only a 0.7ft, 15-second swell on the 31st, but with 12 mph cross-shore wind making it choppy. Energy is 45 (weak wave energy). Not a session.
September starts with the same story: tiny 1ft west swells, light winds, energy values between 25 and 75. The longest period comes on Friday the 4th—1ft at 14 seconds—but you’re still waiting for something to push.
The best of a bad lot: Sunday, August 23rd morning. That 2ft west-northwest swell (111 energy) with light cross-onshore breeze is the only wave worth looking at. Kiholo Bay breaks consistently and likes a west-northwest swell, so it’s at least lined up right. But it’s tiny, and for most of us, it’s a longboard kind of day, if you even bother.
There’s a solid six-day flat spell (Aug 24-29), and the rest is barely rideable. Honestly, the kite surfers might be having more fun. Stay patient—this area usually has something, so don’t write it off completely.
Keep your head up,
Rusty.
