The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Joss Bay over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, I’ve got to be honest with you – it’s looking grim. Out of the entire 16-day window, there isn’t a single moment where the surf is worth paddling out for. The forecasts are all showing "poor surf conditions" with a score of zero. We’re looking at a full blank run here, which for this area is a bit more normal than you'd hope.
The only break we have to look at is Joss Bay itself. It’s an inconsistent spot that’s only fairly exposed to the swell, and it needs a northerly swell direction to really work. Unfortunately, the swell that does show up is tiny – we’re talking about 2 ft from the NNE on the morning of Friday the 17th of July, but with a weak period of 4 seconds and a cross-shore wind from the north at 12 mph, the energy is a pathetic 19. It’s not going to do anything.
The water temperature is sitting at 68°, which is a whopping 7° warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s very unusual, and you’ll definitely notice it if you go for a swim, but it won’t help the waves.
Through the weekend, the swell stays small and weak. Saturday the 18th is more of the same: 2 ft with onshore and cross-onshore winds ruining any chance of a clean face. By Sunday the 19th, we get a tiny bump to 4 ft from the NNE on the morning, with a period of just 5 seconds and a combined energy of 55. Still weak, and the wind is cross-onshore at 16 mph, making it choppy and messy.
There’s a slight improvement in period on the 19th afternoon, hitting 8 seconds, but the swell drops to 3 ft and the wind goes onshore. It’s a no-go.
The following week is a write-off. From Monday the 20th all the way through to the end of the month, we’re looking at swells below 3 ft, mostly with periods under 8 seconds, and winds that are either onshore or cross-onshore. The combined energy rarely gets above 70, and it’s usually below 20. The conditions are consistently described as choppy or with a cross-chop.
From the 27th of July through to the 30th, the swell disappears completely – showing zeros for height and energy. The wind goes offshore, which is clean, but with no waves, it’s just a flat, glassy day for a paddle. The 29th of July afternoon is actually glassy with a light southerly air, but again, no surf.
The very end of the period, on the 1st of August, we see a tiny 0.3 ft from the north with a glassy morning, but it’s nothing. The 1st afternoon brings a 1 ft from the west with a cross-shore breeze.
So, what’s the call? There are no standout days. There’s no surf. Honestly, for paddle surfing, you’re better off staying home and checking the forecast again in a few days. With these small, weak swells and persistent onshore winds, the setup here looks more interesting for a kite surfer than anyone on a longboard.
Rusty.
