The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's take a good look at what Joss Bay has got cooking for us over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you, it's a pretty bleak picture for paddle surfing for the bulk of this outlook.
The overall pattern is one of very weak, short-period wind swell, almost always blown out by onshore or cross-onshore winds. The water temp is sitting at 70°F, which is a massive 7°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s very unusual, and something you’ll feel when you get in.
We're looking at a long, dry spell with no real surf to speak of right through the end of August. From the 22nd right through to the 31st of August, the energy is just pathetic, with the combined swell energy barely cracking double digits. The best you'll see in that whole first week is a 4ft wave on Tuesday the 25th, but it's getting hammered by a fresh onshore breeze (ENE at 22 mph), making it a total mess. The wave comment says it all: "poor surf conditions" for almost every single session. It’s not even worth looking at the ocean.
We finally get a tiny pulse on the 1st of September. Tuesday morning (1st September) shows a 4ft north swell with a weak 5-second period, and energy at just 64. The wind is a light cross-off from the west at 9 mph, which will clean things up. The wave comment says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions," so it's not going to be epic by any stretch. It might be the only window in two weeks where you can get a few knee-high, crumbly ones to yourself, but don't expect much.
After that tiny blip, the energy dries up again. The rest of the first week of September shows the swell dropping back to nothing and the wind swinging back onshore, ruining any chance of quality. Even when we get a 12-second period swell on the 6th of September, the wave height is only 0.3ft – that's flat.
If you’re a kitesurfer, there are a few really windy afternoons, especially the 28th and 29th of August with strong offshore and cross-off winds, but the swell is non-existent, so there's nothing to ride. For the rest of us, it's a blank run. The area tends to have spells like this, so it’s not unusual, just disappointing.
Stay patient, check back later. Forecasts change.
Rusty.
