The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get real about the next couple of weeks. Right now, the ocean out at Slufter is just not playing ball. We’re looking at a pretty flat, messy stretch for the foreseeable future, so don’t be in a rush to wax up.

The first few days are a total write-off. We’ve got fresh, onshore winds and lumpy, short-period junk. The water is a balmy 71° which is a solid 7° warmer than usual for this time of year, which is pretty wild, but it doesn't make up for the lack of any real push. The swell energy is weak, with readings in the 60s and 120s – nothing that’s going to get your heart racing.

Through the rest of the first week and into the second, the swell drops out even more. We’re talking ankle-snappers at best, with the energy numbers bottoming out in the single digits. There’s a little clean window on Saturday the 8th with light offshore winds, but the swell is only 1ft. It’s pretty, but it’s not surfable. This flat, quiet spell will stretch for a solid week or more.

Now, there is a glimmer of hope way out there. Around the 18th and into Wednesday the 19th, things start to wake up. The swell builds to 4ft and then 6ft, and the energy jumps to over 250 – that’s a proper pulse of moderate energy. The period is still short, around 6 seconds, so it’s going to be a bit crumbly and junky, but there’s finally some power to push you around. The wind is cross-shore, which is better than onshore, but it won’t be perfect. This is the standout window, but it’s promising, not guaranteed. It’s the only time in the next two weeks I’d even paddle out.

Honestly, for most of this stretch, the setup looks more interesting for a kite than a surfboard, especially with the lumpy, wind-blown conditions. But hang in there, that pulse around the 19th is something to keep an eye on.
