The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this outlook is a tough one to write. The whole 16-day window is a real struggle, with no standout surf on offer. I’m not going to sugarcoat it; the conditions are just consistently poor, with scores that don’t inspire any hope.
We’re looking at Noorderstrand, and right off the bat, the first recommendation isn't until Thursday, August 20th. But even then, it’s a total write-off. The water is sitting at 70°F, which is a whopping 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s a very unusual anomaly. The swell is a weak 4ft from the WSW with a short period of 5 seconds, and the combined energy is a measly 71 (very weak). To make matters worse, a 30 km/h SW cross-wind is making a mess of things. It’s a classic day to stay on the beach.
The grim pattern continues. Friday the 21st is more of the same: small, weak swell and cross-onshore winds. Saturday the 22nd sees a slight bump in energy to 4ft from the NNW (combined energy 140 – moderate), but it’s onshore wind and the surf quality is still rated as poor. The rest of the first week, from Sunday the 23rd through to the 28th, is a washout. We’re looking at tiny waves, often under 3ft, with periods of clean conditions but absolutely no power. It’s a bleak stretch.
Heading into the second week, the pattern shifts but the outcome is the same. On August 30th, we get a bit more size – 5ft to 5ft from the SW (combined energy climbing to 204 – moderate) – but the wind is cross-on and lumpy. It’s just not surfable. August 31st is the closest we get to something interesting. Swell hits 7ft from the WSW (combined energy 341 – moderate) with a 7-second period, and a cross-offshore wind keeps it clean. But the quality is still deemed marginal at best, and it’s still a long way out.
The first few days of September are a blur of onshore winds and knee-to-waist high slop. By September 4th, the wind is screaming at 45 km/h, making it completely unsurfable.
In short, there is no blue sky here. There are no hidden gems. The forecast offers nothing for a surfer to get excited about. Sometimes you just have to look at the ocean and know when to leave it alone.
Rusty.
