The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – we’re looking at a pretty grim stretch for Noorderstrand. The whole 16-day window is a write-off for anything decent, with nothing but poor surf conditions on the cards. The first glimmer of anything surfable doesn’t come until Monday the 27th of July, so we’re staring down a solid 10 days of flat, messy, or blown-out junk.
The water is running about 69° which is *much warmer than normal* for this time of year, but that’s about the only positive. The combined swell energy barely cracks double digits for most of that first week, with a weak 55 (moderate energy) on the 16th, but it’s a 4ft northerly windswell with a short 5 second period, and cross-shore winds from the NNE at 19 mph. That’s a lumpy, choppy mess.
The only day that even *tries* to offer something is Monday the 27th of July in the morning. We get a light ENE breeze at 6 mph, which is light offshore and will clean things up. There’s a 4ft swell from the WSW (that’s actually a decent direction for this spot) moving at 5 seconds, so still short-period, but the combined energy is 69 – weak. The wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” That’s it. That’s the best we’ve got. It’s a tiny, weak, short-period wave, but at least it’s clean.
For the rest of the time, it’s either too small, too onshore, or both. Tuesday the 28th morning has a little 3ft from the west with a light ESE offshore, but the energy is a paltry 35, and it’s still just a dribble. The 31st of July afternoon shows a 5ft swell from the west with a 6 second period and 152 (moderate energy), but it’s accompanied by a cross-shore wind and labelled “poor surf conditions.” Too messy.
Because the break is exposed and faces NW, and the swell directions are all over the place, on days with a bit of size and strong onshore winds, this setup would be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The crowds are often there, but frankly, with quality this low, that won’t be an issue.
No standouts, no hidden gems. Just a blank run that’s fairly normal for this area when the pattern is this stubborn. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d leave the boards at home for a while.
Rusty.
