The Lowdown
Alright, this is a tough one to call, mate. I’m looking at a solid 16-day window here, and honestly, for Noorderstrand, it’s looking like a real dry spell. The setup is exposed to the north-west, but nothing’s lining up properly. The swell is tiny, the wind is almost always cross or onshore, and the whole period is plagued by poor surf conditions. There’s a few days of clean-ish conditions right at the end of the run, but the swell is gone by then. So, to be straight with you, there’s nothing worth paddling out for in the first two weeks. The first real chance of anything even worth mentioning is on Monday the 27th of July, but even then it’s a mess.
We start with a total blank. From Wednesday the 15th right through to Sunday the 26th, it’s a complete write-off. Tiny waves, poor wind, and the energy is weak – the combined energy sits below 100 (mostly in the teens and twenties) right up until the 18th, when it finally climbs but stays in the "moderate" range. The swell is a short-period, weak windswell from the north, and the wind is nearly always cross-on. It’s just not happening.
The only glimmer comes on Monday the 27th. The swell direction swings to the west-southwest, and the height picks up to 5 ft in the afternoon. The period is still short (6 seconds), so it’s nothing special, but the combined energy jumps to a moderate 176. However, the wind is cross-on from the west, so it’s going to be lumpy and choppy. It’s still poor surf conditions. The next morning, Tuesday the 28th, is the best of the bunch: a 4 ft west-southwest swell with a cross-shore wind from the southwest. The energy is 91, which is still just moderate, and the period is only 6 seconds. It’s the only time the wind is not directly onshore, but it’s still cross-shore with a chop, so it’s not exactly clean. It’s a slight improvement, but not a standout.
After that, it drops right back off. The 29th and 30th are tiny again, with no swell to speak of. The only clean conditions appear on the 24th, 25th, and 26th, but the swell is a pathetic 1 ft to 2 ft from the north or southwest, with a period of 3 to 5 seconds. That’s flat.
So, the harsh truth is there are no standouts here. If you’ve got a kite, the 27th and 28th might be interesting, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a long wait for a very average wave. The forecasts can change, but right now, I’d be looking at other plans.
