Alright, Rusty here. Let me tell you straight up, looking ahead over the next couple of weeks, it's looking pretty bleak for a proper surf at Noorderstrand. We've got a long stretch of small, weak, and choppy conditions on the cards. There's nothing that gets my heart racing, but let's break down the rubbish we've got to work with.
Right now, we're looking at a 16-day outlook, and it kicks off with a real flat spot. There’s no surf worth mentioning until Saturday the 4th of July, and even then, it's a letdown. For the morning, the swell from the west is a tiny 3 ft with a short, gutless period of 5 seconds. The wind is howling at 16 mph from the west, blowing straight across the break, making it choppy and messy. The combined wave energy is a weak 64, so there's just no power. It's a poor surf scene all round. Saturday afternoon stays poor, with the swell dropping to 2 ft.
Come Sunday the 5th, we see a bit of a northwesterly pulse. The morning brings a 4 ft swell from the NW, but the period is still low at 6 seconds, and with a 16 mph onshore wind from the same direction, it's blown out. The combined energy here is only 86, so it's still weak. Not a single session in this whole first week has a decent score attached to it; it's all "poor surf conditions" on the records.
Through the rest of the first week and into the second, it's a similar story. Swell heights stay under 3 ft. The wind keeps swinging from the west and northwest, mostly cross-onshore, keeping the surface bumpy. There's a brief moment on Thursday morning the 9th of July with a light 3 mph cross-shore breeze from the north-northeast, but the swell is a tiny 2 ft at 8 seconds, so it's just not doing anything. The energy is only 45.
There's a big gap of proper flatness from around the 16th of July out to the 19th, where the swell essentially dies completely, with no wave height recorded for the breaks. Forecasts can change, but as it stands, this is a very poor run.
Honestly, if you're desperate, the least worst option might be the Sunday morning on the 19th of July. It's the last day in the forecast, and we see a 3 ft swell from the NNW with a 6-second period and moderate cross-shore wind from the southwest. The energy reaches 60. It's still not good, but it's the highest energy we see all period. For beginners, the swell is under 5 ft, so it's not dangerous in size, but the chop and cross-shore wind make it a real challenge. Given the persistent cross-shore and onshore winds here, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing most days.
So, there you have it. Nothing to get excited about. The pattern looks stubborn, and we just have to wait for a better system to roll through.
Rusty.
