The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s be straight with you – this 16-day window for the region is a tough one. We’ve got a real dry spell on our hands. The only break on the map is Noorderstrand, and looking at the whole run, there’s not a single session that gets the nod. The first decent bit of swell isn't even on the radar until Sunday the 19th, but even then, the conditions are just plain ugly.
For the first few days, the 17th and 18th, it’s tiny and choppy. You’re looking at knee-high slop with cross-onshore winds. Not worth wetting a suit.
Sunday the 19th sees a bump in size, with waves around 5ft to 6ft from the NNW. The combined energy climbs into the moderate range (220 to 295), but the wind is a fresh cross-onshore, making it lumpy and messy. This is a beach setup, and with that much wind and chop, honestly, this looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The period is a short 7 seconds, so it’s just windswell junk.
The week that follows, from Monday the 20th through the 24th, is a mix of weak, choppy, and clean but tiny. The swell heights hover around 2ft to 5ft, but the wind is almost always cross-onshore or onshore. The combined energy rarely gets above 100, and when it does, like on the 23rd, the wind is still onshore, ruining any chance of a clean wave. A few mornings like the 29th and 30th show clean, cross-offshore winds, but the swell is a pathetic 0.7ft to 1ft – you’d be paddling for nothing.
The one thing that stands out, and it’s a real head-scratcher, is the water temperature. On the 17th, the water is a balmy 69°F, which is a massive 7°F warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s very unusual, but it doesn’t help the surf.
The best of a bad bunch might be the afternoon of the 26th of July. We get a 4ft swell from the NNW with a slightly longer 7-second period, and the wind goes light and onshore, keeping it cleanish. The energy is moderate (193), but it’s still a far cry from good. The morning of the 27th has a clean cross-shore wind, but the swell drops back to 2ft.
Looking into the first week of August, the 1st shows a bit of a pulse with 4ft, but the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore, making it lumpy again.
So, bottom line: there’s no standout session here. It’s a blank run. For this area, that’s not entirely unusual. The forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it, but for now, I’d say the board stays in the bag.
Rusty.
