Gather 'round, folks. Rusty here. Let's be real right off the bat: if you're looking for a surf session over the next couple of weeks, you're gonna be staring at a whole lot of flat, gutless water. There’s zilch on offer at Noorderstrand.
Right from the jump, Sunday the 5th of July, we’ve got a weak, short-period NW swell running at about 3ft to 4ft, with a period of just 6 seconds. It’s weak, with only 67 (moderate wave energy) combined energy, and with a strong 12 mph cross-on wind from the WNW, it’s just choppy, messy junk. Not worth paddling out for.
Monday the 6th is even worse: the swell drops to 3ft, period tanks to 4 seconds, and combined energy falls to 25 (weak). Tuesday and Wednesday are the same sad story – tiny, short-period bumps in the 2ft to 2ft range with cross-onshore winds keeping everything choppy. By Wednesday the 8th, the swell is only 2ft and 2ft. The water temperature is sitting at 67°, which is a whopping 7° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s very unusual.
Through the middle of the week, it's a total drought. The wave energy dips into single digits, with values as low as 7. Thursday morning the 9th goes glassy, but the swell is a pathetic 1ft. Through the entire second week, from the 11th to the 20th of July, there's nothing but tiny, weak, mostly onshore slop. The swell stays between 1.0ft and 3ft, periods rarely get above 7 seconds, and the combined energy, while hitting a peak of 96 on the Sunday the 19th, is still just moderate. Even when the wind goes offshore or clean, like on Friday the 18th, there's simply no swell to ride – just 2ft of nothing.
The only time it starts to push towards *maybe* something is that blip on the 18th and 19th, with a NNW swell hitting 3ft and combined energy climbing to 96, but the period is still short at 7 seconds. It's a weak, junky windswell, not the clean lines we want. And by the 20th, it's back to tiny.
Honestly, fellas, this stretch is a write-off for paddle surfing. The whole 16-day window is a gap of consistent, poor-quality surf. Given the persistent onshore wind and small, short-period swell at a beach setup, this is looking way more interesting for the kite surfers than for us. Keep the board in the car, but don't hold your breath. Sometimes the forecast gives you nothing, and this is one of those times.
Rusty.
