The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you—this stretch ahead is a tough one. We’re looking at Noorderstrand as the only spot on the radar, and honestly, the surf just isn’t showing up for a good paddle.
Right now, from Wednesday the 19th of August onwards, we’re stuck in a real flat spell. The water’s sitting at 70°F—that’s much warmer than usual for this time of year, more than five degrees above the norm, which is pretty wild. But that’s where the good news ends. The first few days, the swell is tiny, under 2ft, with short, weak periods around 5 seconds, and the combined energy is barely a whisper (17 to 30). The wind is all over the place—onshore, cross-onshore, messy—so the surface is chopped and poor. No standout at all here.
We roll through Thursday and Friday, still nothing. Swell bumps up a bit to 5ft or so, but the period stays short, 5 to 6 seconds, and the wind is cross or cross-onshore, keeping it lumpy. The energy is weak to moderate (49 to 119), but it’s all poor surf conditions. The weekend brings clearer skies Saturday morning, but wind is onshore at 12 to 19 mph, and the swell is just not enough to get excited about.
The pattern doesn’t change much into the next week. Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th see cleaner conditions with cross-offshore winds, but the swell drops right off—2ft to 2ft, periods around 6 to 7 seconds, and energy is tiny (10 to 33). It’s clean, but there’s no wave to ride.
We hit a real gap from around Wednesday the 26th to Sunday the 30th—most days show clean conditions with offshore or cross-off winds, but the swell is practically non-existent, often 1ft or less, and energy is in the single digits or low teens. It’s a flat spell, plain and simple.
The only flicker of something comes later, on Friday the 28th of August, when a modest pulse of 6ft from the NW shows up, with a period of 6 seconds and energy jumping to 293. But the wind is cross-onshore, and it’s still rated as poor surf conditions. Not worth getting your hopes up, especially with the messy wind.
Further out, around the 2nd of September, we see a bigger swell—8ft to 10ft from the WNW, with periods of 7 to 8 seconds, and energy ramping up strong (510 to 953). But again, the wind is cross-onshore, and the surf is rated poor. At that size, with short period and onshore wind, it’s more of a messy, lumpy mess than anything clean. That’s expert-only territory, and even then, it’s not great.
So, bottom line: there’s no true standout in this 16-day window. The best you can hope for is a clean, flat morning now and then, but no real surf. The conditions are against us, and the swell direction is mostly from the NW or W, which isn’t hitting Noorderstrand’s optimum from the NW in a clean way. If you’re desperate for a paddle, maybe the Tuesday morning the 25th has a slight offshore breeze, but the swell is tiny. Otherwise, it’s a blank run—this area can be like this, so don’t sweat it too much.
Rusty.
