Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what the next couple of weeks are shaping up like for our local stretch.
Honestly, it’s a tough run ahead. The whole 16-day forecast is a bit of a write-off for clean, proper surfing. We've got waves on offer pretty much every day, but the wind is just relentless, and the quality is shot. The first real glimmer of hope doesn't even show up until Thursday the 23rd of July, and even then it's marginal. There’s a big gap of almost two weeks of poor conditions before we see anything worth getting out of bed for.
Let’s start with the early days. From Wednesday the 8th of July right through to Wednesday the 22nd, it's a constant battle with cross-onshore wind. The swell is mostly small, around 1 ft to 5 ft, and the period is short, in the 3 to 7 second range, so the energy is weak to moderate (anywhere from 4 to 146). The water temp is about 67°, which is a whopping 6° warmer than normal—very unusual for this time of year, but that warm water won’t fix the choppy, lumpy mess out there. For a beginner-friendly spot like Noorderstrand, the size is fine, but the wind just kills it. Even when the swell bumps up on Sunday the 12th (5 ft) and Tuesday the 14th (4 ft), the fresh cross-onshore wind makes it lumpy and unrideable. You'd be better off with a kite than a paddle on most of those days.
Then we get to the 21st of July (Tuesday). The swell jumps up to 5 ft from the NW, and the energy climbs to 146—still not great, but it’s a sign of a change. Then on Tuesday afternoon, it starts getting real. A proper NW swell hits 8 ft, with a period of 7 seconds and the combined energy jumping to 671. That's strong wave energy. The problem? The wind is onshore from the NW at 16 mph, and the comment says "poor surf conditions." It’s big, but messy. This swell continues through Wednesday the 22nd, with 7 ft and 6 ft waves, strong energy (480 and 389), but still with fresh onshore wind. This is only for experts—it’s way over the 8 ft mark at times and blown out.
Now, the only faint light in this tunnel is Thursday the 23rd of July. Thursday morning, the wind shifts. We get a light cross-offshore breeze from the SSW at 6 mph. The swell drops back to 3 ft from the NNW with a 7-second period, and the energy is weak (63). But for the first time in the entire run, the conditions are rated as clean. It's the only day where the waves are even described as "surfable," even if the comment says "very ordinary conditions." That cross-offshore wind will clean it up, making it the pick of the entire two-week period by a long shot. The water temp anomaly is gone from the data, so it's back to average. The consistency at Noorderstrand is fairly consistent, so you’ll get some waves. Crowds are often here though, and with the only clean window in weeks, you can bet it’ll be busy.
So, if you’ve got patience, wait for Thursday the 23rd. Thursday afternoon we’re back to onshore wind from the WNW, so that clean window is just a morning session. That morning is your only real shot. Everything else is a hard pass for a paddle.
Rusty.
