The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's looking like a proper wait-and-see stretch for the coast.
Overall, the next couple of weeks are a mixed bag with a lot of onshore chop and not a lot of quality on offer. We've got a few windows where things clean up, but you'll have to be patient. The first true standout doesn't show up for a while, so expect a lot of flat or messy days before we get there.
Looking at the first few days, Tuesday the 18th into Wednesday the 19th is a write-off with messy, cross-onshore wind and small, weak swell. The wave energy is really low, barely hitting 81 (moderate) at its best, and that's being generous. Thursday the 20th is much the same story, with more rain and cross-shore chop.
Friday morning the 21st is where we get a small glimmer. The wind goes glassy at dawn, with a small 3ft NNW swell. The combined energy is only 51 (weak), but with the glassy conditions it'll be surfable, just very ordinary. The crowd might be around as it's often busy. That glassy window is short-lived, as the wind swings around to a strong cross-on by the afternoon and blows it out.
Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are all about more small, choppy, cross-onshore conditions. The swell stays under 4ft with short periods. It's not worth paddling out, to be honest. After that, Monday the 24th through to Thursday the 27th is a proper gap with barely any swell and very weak energy. We're talking levels down to 6 (very weak). A few mornings might look clean, like Wednesday the 26th with a light offshore, but the swell is a pathetic 0.9ft, so it's a complete flat spell.
We finally get a flicker of something on Friday the 28th, with a little 2ft SW swell under light winds. But again, the energy is weak at 24 (very weak), so it's not going to be much.
The best on offer comes on Saturday the 29th. Noorderstrand looks to have the best conditions of the entire run. The morning shows a clean, 5ft swell from the WSW with a light cross-offshore wind. The combined energy jumps to 175 (moderate), so it's got some push. This is the standout window for anyone who's been holding out, but remember, the wind shifts to a strong cross-on by the afternoon.
Tuesday the 1st of September brings the biggest swell of the run: a 8ft WSW groundswell. The energy is very strong at 532. This is definitely expert-only territory, and it's being scored as marginal, with light cross-shore wind that might leave a bit of a chop on it. It's a big, powerful swell, but it's not the cleanest setup.
Finally, Wednesday the 2nd of September is the other real highlight. We've got a 7ft WNW swell, strong energy at 432, and absolute glassy, dead-calm conditions. This is the one you want to circle on the calendar. It's a big swell, so experts only, but if you can handle it, the surf will be as clean as it gets after a long dry spell.
So to wrap it up: Don't wet your board this week. The glassy Friday morning on the 21st is a maybe, but your best bets are the clean, moderate swell on Saturday the 29th of August, or the big, glassy clean-up on Wednesday the 2nd of September. The first week is mostly a bust, so save your energy.
Stay patient.
Rusty.
