The Lowdown
Alright, mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a bit of a grim stretch for us. There’s no surf worth paddling out for at all. The whole 16-day window is a write-off. Every single session at Noorderstrand gets a “poor surf conditions” tag, and the scores just aren’t there. We’re staring at a long blank run.
Right from the start, Friday the 21st of August is a no-go. We’ve got a tiny 3ft swell from the NNW with a short 5-second period, but the wind is a cross-onshore N breeze at 9 mph. It’s just choppy, messy, and the combined swell energy is weak (56). Saturday the 22nd shows a tiny bump in size to 4ft from the NNW, but it’s still cross-onshore or onshore, with moderate winds and a combined energy of 113. That’s still weak, and the quality is poor.
We limp through the rest of the week with nothing. Sunday sees 3ft from the NNW, waves are weak and cross-onshore. Monday the 24th through Wednesday the 27th, the swell drops right off. We’re talking knee-high dribble at best—1ft to 2ft—with tiny periods and combined energy in the single digits or low 20s. The winds do go clean and cross-offshore for a couple of days, which is a tease, but there’s just no wave to ride. Thursday the 28th of August brings a jump: a 6ft swell from the WSW, but the period is a paltry 7 seconds and the wind is a strong 28 mph cross-shore. The combined energy hits 304, which is moderate, but the near-gale wind puts it in the “don’t bother” category. That trend holds into the weekend of the 29th and 30th with more strong, lumpy cross-shore winds and lumpy, messy surf.
The first few days of September don’t offer any relief. There’s a risk of thunderstorms and strong onshore winds on the 1st, and by Wednesday the 2nd we get a 5ft from the N with a 7-second period, but again, strong cross-onshore winds (28 mph) make it a washing machine. The combined energy is 285, which is moderate, but the quality is totally lacking. It might look more interesting for the kite surfers than anyone with a paddle. The last few days on the 4th and 5th are more of the same: onshore winds and weak energy.
The bottom line: there is nothing to recommend. No standouts, no best options. It’s a flat, windy, or messy run all the way through. Keep the board in the bag and wait for the next change.
Rusty.
