The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you—this 16-day run for Scheveningen Pier is a tough one. The whole window is a write-off for decent waves. The forecast shows very little energy and nothing that’s going to make you want to paddle out. The best we can say is that the consistency is there, but it’s consistently poor.

From now through to the end of the month, the swell is tiny. You’re looking at waves mostly below 2 ft, and what little swell does show up is coming from the north, with a short, weak period around 4 to 6 seconds. The combined energy is almost always in the weak range, mostly below 100, with a few brief moments of moderate energy on the 18th and 19th (121 and 199), but those are still accompanied by nasty cross-onshore or onshore winds. The wind is a major problem here—almost every day has a cross or cross-onshore breeze, often a moderate to fresh breeze, which is going to chop the surface up something fierce. The water is much warmer than normal for this time of year at 68°, which is nice for a swim, but not for surfing.

There is a gap of several days here with no reason to even look at the ocean. The swell just doesn’t build. Even the one period with a bit more energy on the 19th is blown out by strong onshore wind (25 mph). For a beach setup like this, with that kind of wind and weak swell, it’s honestly more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The closest we get to anything clean is right at the very end, on the 29th of July, when a light cross-offshore breeze finally shows up. But the swell is a pathetic 0.7 ft to 2 ft from the north-northwest, with virtually no energy (3–13). All that means is a clean, flat ocean.

Don’t hold your breath. This is one of those blank runs that’s pretty normal for the area when the conditions don’t line up. Forecasts can change, but as it stands, leave the board at home.

Rusty.
