The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Cayton Bay Pumphouse over the next couple weeks.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough stretch. We’ve got a real flat spell on our hands. The first bit of any real surf to talk about doesn’t show up until Wednesday the 16th, and even then it’s barely a ripple. We’re lookin’ at a solid four to five days of basically nothing before we get a whisper of a wave. That’s a long gap, and you’d be better off gettin’ the gear waxed and waitin’.

So, Wednesday the 16th of September, we finally see a pulse. It’s a small bump of 0.7m (2 ft) from the NNW with a short period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is weak, just 35 (moderate wave energy). The wind is a cross-shore from the NNW at 20 km/h (12 mph), so it’s gonna be a bit lumpy. Not exactly a day to clear the calendar. The water’s a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sittin’ around 15°°C (60°°F).

That little flurry fades fast. After that, it’s back to tiny, weak signals and more flat days. You get a few mornings and afternoons with 0.1m (0.3 ft) to 0.3m (1 ft) of swell, but the energy is in the single digits or low teens. Winds are mostly offshore or cross-offshore, which would be great if there was any swell to clean up. But there isn’t. It’s a tease.

The second week doesn’t offer much hope. There’s a slight uptick on Sunday the 20th with 0.6m (2 ft) from the NW, period of 5 seconds, and combined energy of 23 (weak). Still tiny. The pattern holds through the rest of the window – mostly flat, with a few tiny pulses from the ESE. The wind stays onshore or cross-onshore from the NE for the last few days of September, so even if there was a wave, it’d be choppy.

Honestly, this is a classic flat spell for the area. When it goes quiet, it can stay quiet for a while. The one slightly better moment – and I mean *slightly* – is the early morning of Wednesday the 16th, but you’re still in ankle-snappers with a side-wind chop. There’s no standout here. None. If you absolutely have to get wet, that Wednesday morning is your best shot, but keep the expectations in the car.

Keep an eye on the charts, boys and girls. It tends not to stay poor for long, but this run is a doozy.

Rusty.
