The Lowdown

Alright, let me level with you. I’ve been staring at the charts for your area, and honestly, it’s a pretty bleak outlook for the next 16 days. We’re looking at a long stretch of flat, unrideable conditions, so don't get your hopes up for anything decent.

For the first week and a half, from Monday the 13th right through to the morning of Thursday the 23rd, there’s virtually nothing. We’re talking about a solid 10-day gap of zero surf. The waves are just not showing up at all, with the combined energy sitting at a pathetic 0. You’d be better off taking up a new hobby for a while.

The only real possibility, and I’m using that word loosely, arrives on the afternoon of Friday the 24th of July. The swell's gonna bump up to 5 ft from the SW, but here’s the catch: it’s a short period slop of 6 seconds, and the wind is a fresh cross-onshore at 19 mph. The wave energy is moderate at best (190), but the conditions are going to be choppy and lumpy. That’s expert territory at that size, especially with the wind ruining it. It’s really more of a mess for the experienced crew than anything for the average surfer.

The weekend of the 25th and 26th will see a bit of swell, around 3 ft to 5 ft from the SW, but it’s still weak, short period, and the wind stays messy. The energy is dropping from 111 down to 46, and it’s just not going to be clean. After that, we’re back to flatness and tiny, weak waves for the rest of the month.

Your spot here is Brighton, a beach/pier setup that’s inconsistent and often crowded. But with a run like this, crowds won't be a problem. The water temperature is sitting at a very unusual 68°F, which is a whopping 8°F warmer than normal for this time of year. It’s a weird anomaly that’s hard to ignore.

Bottom line: there is no standout session here. The whole 16-day window is a bust. For a place like Brighton, a blank run like this is more normal than you’d hope, but it won’t stay poor forever. Forecasts can change, so keep checking. For now, the lineup looks more interesting for a kite than a surfboard given the onshore winds and the chop.

Rusty.
