G’day, Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with ya—lookin’ at the next couple of weeks for Brighton, it’s a tough run. We’re kickin’ off Monday, 6 July, with nothing worthwhile. There’s a solid gap of near enough two weeks where it’s a write-off. The first real glimmer doesn’t show up until Sunday, 19 July.
So, let’s paint the picture: for the first 13 days, it’s a whole lot of nothin’. Small, weak, short-period dribble from the WSW and SW, mostly 0.3 ft to 4 ft, but the winds are all over the shop—cross, cross-on, sometimes a bit of cross-off—but the swell energy is tiny (mostly under 100), and the wave comment is consistently “poor surf conditions.” Even when we get a glassy Wednesday morning on 8 July, the swell is a pathetic 0.7 ft with an energy reading of just 3. No point paddling out for that.
There’s a tease on Monday, 20 July morning. Swell bumps up to 7 ft from the WSW (period 7 seconds, moderate energy at 332), and we get a clean, cross-off breeze from the ENE. That’s the standout. It’s manageable for intermediate to experienced surfers, and the conditions look good. But that’s it—one morning. That afternoon the wind swings SE and it gets choppy, and the rest of the week fades away again.
Brighton is a beach/pier setup here, and while it’s fairly exposed to the SW, it’s inconsistent and often crowded when there’s a pulse. The water temp on Monday, 6 July morning was measured at 66°, which is a massive 8° warmer than usual—very unusual for this time of year—so you’ll be surfing in warm water if you do chance it.
Overall, the one true standout is the Monday morning of 20 July at Brighton. Swing by for a clean 7 ft WSW swell with light offshore breezes. It’s got moderate energy (332) and should offer some fun waves. But be aware, it’s inconsistent and often crowded, so pick your peak carefully. After that, Tuesday, 21 July morning drops back to 5 ft but onshore wind spoils it.
So, one window, one morning. If you’re keen, that’s your shot. Otherwise, forecasts can change, but this run looks pretty barren for Brighton.
Rusty.
