Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – we’re looking at a long stretch of flatness ahead. The numbers are what they are, so let’s just get into it.
Right now, and for the next week or so, it's pretty grim. We're talking about tiny, almost non-existent swell, combined wave energy barely hitting double digits (just 2) and mostly poor conditions. The water temp at Brighton is sitting at a very unusual 67°, which is way warmer than normal for this time of year, but that's about the only interesting thing in the water. For the first few days, from Wednesday the 8th through to Monday the 13th, the swell is basically a ripple. You'll be sitting on your board doing nothing. There's a brief flicker on Saturday the 11th afternoon with a tiny 2ft easterly windswell, but the period is a short 3 seconds – not worth paddling out for.
There’s a real gap here. From around the 12th of July through the 21st, there are days with absolutely zero swell energy (0), just howling cross-offshore winds and clean but flat surf. It’s a proper blank run.
Things finally start to show a pulse on Thursday the 16th of July. We get a modest bump in swell, with the combined energy climbing to 30. By Thursday afternoon, we’re looking at 3ft from the WSW with a period of 5 seconds, but the wind is a fresh cross-onshore, making it lumpy. Not great, but at least there’s something.
The only real standout, and I mean the *only* one in this whole 16-day window, is on Thursday the 23rd of July. Brighton picks up a 3ft to 5ft swell from the WSW. The combined energy jumps to 91 in the morning and 117 in the afternoon – that’s moderate energy, actually moving some water. Here’s the catch though: the wind is a strong cross-onshore, blowing at 22-25 mph, making the surface messy. For a beach/pier setup like Brighton, with that kind of onshore wind, you’re looking at choppy, blown-out waves. Honestly, that setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. If you are an expert on a big board and just want to feel some power, it’ll be there, but don’t expect a clean face.
So the long and short of it: wait for the 23rd, but keep the expectations in check. The rest of this report is a write-off.
Rusty.
