Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this outlook is a tough one. We’re lookin’ at a long, long stretch of flat, messy, or just plain ugly conditions with nothing to get excited about for a while.
We’re kickin’ off on the 4th of July, and honestly, the first two weeks are a write-off. The swell is tiny, the wind is mostly cross or cross-on, and the wave comment keeps saying "poor surf conditions". There’s a gap that runs from the 4th right through until the 18th of July where there’s not a single surfable day on offer. It’s a pretty grim run for a place that’s described as "inconsistent" – this is one of those blank runs that’s more normal for the area.
The only real glimmer in the whole 16-day window comes on the 18th of July. Saturday morning at Brighton. Now, it’s not a classic, but it’s the only thing that even gets a score. The combined swell energy is a moderate 133, which is at least something in the water. You’re lookin’ at a 3ft swell coming from the WSW, but the period is a short 6 seconds, so it’s gonna be a bit of a weak, mushy, short-interval windswell. The wind is a light offshore from the NW at 6 mph, which will keep the surface clean. It’s described as "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions". For a beginner, that 3ft is fine, but it’s not gonna set the world on fire.
The water temp is a massive 7° above the long-term average – that’s 66° – which is very unusual for this time of year. So you won’t be needing a thick suit.
Bottom line: Don’t even bother for the first two weeks. The 18th of July morning is your only real shot, and the crowds are “often” there, so a few other desperate souls will be out. It’s not a standout, it’s just the only game in town. The afternoon turns cross-on, so get out early.
Stay patient, gang. The ocean will sort itself out eventually.
Rusty.
