The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you about Brighton for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty flat run. The first few days are a write-off – we’re looking at a stretch from Sunday the 19th right through until at least Wednesday the 22nd with barely a ripple. The combined swell energy is sitting at a measly 1 (1) for the first couple of days, and it’s just not happening. You’d be better off finding a longboard for a paddle or just heading to the pub.
We do see a tiny pulse of energy on Wednesday the 22nd afternoon, with the swell bumping up to 2ft from the WSW, but the period is a shocking 3 seconds. That’s pure wind chop, and the wind is a moderate cross-onshore, so it’s going to be choppy and messy. The combined energy only hits 10 (10) – still weak. Not worth getting wet for.
The pattern stays the same. Thursday morning the 23rd is clean but flat. Friday the 24th has a similar 2ft SW windswell in the afternoon, but again it’s cross-onshore and only 4 seconds of period. The weekend of the 26th and 27th sees those winds picking up strongly, with cross-onshore winds hitting 28 mph. That’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle-surfing one. The swell is still just weak windswell.
There’s a slight improvement late in the run. On Saturday the 1st of August, we see the combined swell energy finally climb to 28 (28) with a 3ft to 3ft WSW swell. But the wind is a fresh cross-shore, making it lumpy. The period is still short at 5 seconds. It’s the best of a bad bunch, but it’s not a standout. For a break like Brighton, which is inconsistent, this kind of blank run can happen. It just doesn’t stay poor forever, but this window is a real dud.
Stay patient, and keep an eye on those forecasts. Things can change.
Rusty.
