The Lowdown
We kick off on July 14 with nothing – flat calm, just a moderate breeze out of the NE. That pattern holds through the whole first week: maybe a tiny 0.1m ripple here or there, but all with poor conditions and zero score. The wind is mostly cross-off or onshore, the swell is either absent or so weak you’d be paddling for nothing. By July 20 we get a clean offshore breeze but still no wave energy – a cruel tease.
Then on July 24, Friday morning, something finally shows. A 1.5m swell rolls in from the WSW with a period of 6 seconds – short period, so it’s windswell, not groundswell. The combined energy is 148, which is moderate, but the wind is cross-off from the WNW at 15 km/h, which actually keeps it clean. The wave comment calls it “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” – score 1 out of 10. So it’s rideable, but messy and weak. Not a standout by any stretch. After that, the wind turns onshore and the swell drops off again. By July 29 we see a bigger 1.8m swell (239 energy) but with strong cross-onshore wind – that’s just choppy frustration.
If I had to point to the best moment – and it’s a thin pick – it’s that July 24 morning. But honestly, this is a two-week dead zone. Brighton can be fun when it lines up with a good SW swell and a clean offshore, but we’re not seeing that here. When it does get good, the car park fills up fast – crowds are often a thing. For now, save the petrol.
