Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this 16-day window for Brighton is a total write-off. I’ve scanned every morning and afternoon slot from July 5 right through to July 20, and there’s not a single decent wave on offer. The water is way warmer than usual for this time of year – 66°F with an anomaly of 8°F, which is very unusual – but that’s about the only interesting thing going on. The rest is just a long stretch of tiny, choppy junk.
Brighton’s a beach-and-pier setup that’s inconsistent at the best of times, and often packed when it does work. But here, you’re looking at a solid two-and-a-half weeks with nothing worth paddling out for. The first few days are all cross-onshore winds, lumpy surface, and swell heights barely scraping 3ft – and even then, the period’s a pathetic 4 seconds. That’s windswill, not surf. Energy readings are well under 100 (just 45 on July 5 afternoon), and the forecast keeps repeating that “poor surf conditions” label.
Mid-week there’s a brief glassy morning on July 8 with 0.7ft and zero wind, but the swell is basically dead – combined energy of 2. That’s a lake, not a wave. The following days offer a bit more easterly wind but still nothing above 2ft and periods still short. By July 14 there’s a 12-second pulse from the west, but it’s only 0.3ft – all groundswell, no height. Around July 18–20 the swell tries to build, with heights reaching 4ft and energy climbing to 89 then 119 on July 20 afternoon, but the wind turns cross-onshore again and the period stays short (5 seconds). That’s just messy, lumpy conditions – more interesting for kite surfers than paddle surfers if you ask me.
Bottom line: there’s nothing here for the next 16 days. Brighton is known for being inconsistent, so a blank run like this isn’t surprising. Forecasts can change, but right now I’d hang up the board and find something else to do.
