G’day, Rusty here. Well, looking at the next couple of weeks at Jongensfontein, it’s a proper mixed bag. There’s plenty of swell on the way, but a lot of it is just too big for this spot and the wind is going to be a real handful at times. We’ve got some serious energy in the water at points, with the combined swell energy at around (2801) on the first day, so it’s definitely not a week for the faint-hearted. The water’s sitting at about 62°, which is pretty average for this time of year, so a decent spring suit is all you’ll need.

Let’s start with Thursday morning, the 9th of July. There’s a solid 10ft SSW swell running at 13 seconds, but the wind is a cross-on southerly at 6 mph. It’s just too big for this reef break; you’d be pushing the limits.

Friday the 10th of July morning is where you want to be. The wind drops to glassy calm, and we’ve still got that 10ft SSW swell with a 13-second period. The energy is huge at (2690), but the wind is perfect, dead calm. This is a standout session for experienced surfers only – that size on a reef is no joke, but if you’ve got the nerve, the conditions will be as clean as it gets. The afternoon sees the wind shift onshore, so don’t sleep in.

The weekend goes pretty poor. Saturday and Sunday, the 11th and 12th, are all cross-on winds and the swell drops off, with poor conditions. Not worth paddling out.

Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th of July see the swell drop right back to small 4ft waves. The wind is glassy in the mornings, giving you clean little peelers. It’s a good window for beginners or a longboard, with the wave energy down to around (244-469).

We then hit a few days of marginal surf until Thursday the 16th of July morning, when another big pulse rolls in: 10ft SW swell at 14 seconds, energy at (3032). The wind is a moderate cross-shore. It’s too big for this break again.

The real standout in the second week, and the one to keep an eye on, is Tuesday the 21st of July morning. The forecast shows a 7ft SSW groundswell with a long 14-second period, and the wind is a gentle offshore out of the NW at 9 mph. That’s a dream scenario for this reef, giving you clean, powerful lines. Combined energy is strong at (1867). This is excellent for experienced surfers.

Then, on Wednesday the 22nd of July afternoon, we see another massive spike: 10ft SSW swell with a very long 16-second period, energy at (4292). That’s dangerous levels of energy, and the wind is a gentle cross-shore. Way too big for most.

Finally, Friday the 24th of July afternoon brings a nice note to end the period. The wind goes offshore, light out of the NW, with a clean 6ft SW swell and a 15-second period. Energy is good at (2486). It’s another great option for experienced surfers to get some clean, long-period groundswell barrels.

So, to wrap it up: if you’re a strong surfer, the absolute standouts are Friday the 10th morning and Tuesday the 21st morning. The long-period swells mean the waves will be powerful and lined up perfectly at this reef, but expect some serious size. The first week has a few windows for smaller boards, and the second week has that burst of energy. Bear in mind, this spot can get crowded sometimes, so get in early.

Rusty.
