The Lowdown

Alright folks, let’s get into it. The next couple of weeks are looking like a real mixed bag here at Jongensfontein (reef), but when it’s good, it’s going to be very, very good. The water is sitting at a pretty normal 62°F for this time of year, so nothing weird there.

The real action kicks off straight away. This Friday morning, the 17th, we’re already seeing a solid 6ft SW swell with a period of 11 seconds, and the wind is light and offshore from the WNW. This is clean, rippable stuff with moderate energy (847). It’s a great start. The afternoon holds that glassy condition with the wind swinging SW, but staying light as glass, keeping the 6ft SW swell looking smooth.

Saturday morning the 18th is still good – that 3ft S swell is cleaner under a cross-offshore breeze, but the energy drops a bit (432). By Sunday afternoon, the 19th, things get messy. A strong 19 mph cross-shore wind chops up a 7ft SW swell, and the energy is high (2232) but it’s just not for paddling.

Now, look out for Monday morning, the 20th. This is a standout. The wind is dead calm, glassy, and we’ve got 6ft of clean SSW swell with a period of 9 seconds. The energy is moderate (661) but the conditions are perfect. The water’s calm, the waves are clean – this is the one to get out for.

Tuesday morning, the 21st, is for the experienced crew. We’ve got a 5ft SSW swell, but the period jumps to 14 seconds – that’s a long, powerful groundswell. The energy is strong (1060), and with glassy conditions, this reef is going to produce some proper, lined-up waves. It’s not for beginners at all, but if you know what you’re doing, this is a gem.

The pattern continues strong into Wednesday morning, the 22nd, with a 6ft SW swell at 13 seconds, offshore NW wind, and strong energy (1292). Another excellent call for experienced surfers. The afternoon, however, is a write-off – the swell is predicted to hit 10ft, which is just too big for this break.

We then hit a bit of a rough patch. The wind picks up and the swell gets out of hand. The 23rd, 24th, and 25th are all blown out or too big. The 24th, in particular, sees a 13ft SW swell with massive energy (8134) – that’s kite-surfing territory, not paddle surfing.

Things settle down again by Monday morning, the 27th. Another cracker: a 7ft SW swell, 15-second period, glassy with a light NNW wind, and very strong energy (2853). This is a big, powerful, clean swell on the reef. It’s only for the brave, but the quality is undeniable.

Tuesday morning, the 28th, is a nice little recovery – 5ft SW, 14 seconds, glassy, and strong energy (1114). A solid, clean session for the experienced.

The final standout in this long-range forecast is Friday morning, the 31st. A 8ft SW swell, 12-second period, with a clean cross-offshore wind from the west. The energy is strong (1713), and the conditions look promising. It’s a week and a half away, so keep an eye on it, but it’s a strong candidate for the best of the second week.

So, to sum it up: the best windows are the mornings of the 20th, 21st, 22nd, 27th, and 31st. The 21st and 22nd are the true standouts for the experienced, while the 20th is a treat for anyone who can handle a solid 6ft. Don’t bother with the afternoons on the big days, and definitely steer clear of the 24th and 25th unless you’re on a kite.

Rusty.
