Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming up for Jongensfontein over the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a solid run of surf ahead, but it’s a tale of two halves. The first few days are looking clean and fun, but then a big pulse of swell rolls in that’s going to be a whole different beast. The wind plays a huge role here, so we’ll need to pick our windows.
The first session to get excited about is Saturday morning, July 4th. We’ve got a clean 6 ft swell rolling in from the ESE with a 13-second period, giving us some real energy – the combined energy is sitting at 1245, so there’s plenty of push. The wind is a light cross-off from the north at 6 mph, and that’s going to keep the surface nice and clean. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so a standard 3/2mm should do the trick. This is proper surf for experienced crew, with the reef handling that long-period groundswell well. Saturday afternoon cleans up even more, with the wind going glassy from the east at just 3 mph. The swell drops slightly to 5 ft, but the energy is still strong at 956. It’s going to be a beautiful, glassy afternoon.
Sunday keeps the good times rolling. Morning brings a 4 ft ESE swell with clean offshore NW wind at 6 mph. The sets have a nice 12-second gap. By Sunday afternoon, the wind goes glassy again from the SSE, and the swell is a tidy 4 ft. This is classic, user-friendly Jongensfontein.
Monday is a bit of a write-off. The swell direction swings to the SW, and the wind turns cross-shore, making things lumpy. The morning is only marginal, and the afternoon gets worse with a cross-onshore breeze. Give it a miss.
Tuesday morning is a real standout. The wind goes glassy from the west, and we have a strong 6 ft SW swell with a 12-second period. The energy is up there at 1028. This is going to be clean, powerful, and lining up nicely on the reef. This is the pick of the first week for experienced surfers. The afternoon gets a bit more textured with a cross-on wind, so make the most of the morning.
Wednesday sees the swell jump up to 7 ft from the SW, but the wind is a strong cross-off from the WNW at 12 mph. It’s still clean, but the energy is already spiking to 1937. This is getting into expert territory, especially with the longer 13-second period. The afternoon is a total loss with strong onshore wind.
From Thursday, July 9th through to Saturday, July 11th, the swell is solid, between 7 ft and 8 ft from the SSW, but the wind is a persistent, moderate cross-onshore from the east. The energy is high, but it’s going to be choppy and messy. For pure paddle surfing, it’s a no-go. If you’ve got a kite, this setup might be more your speed.
There’s a bit of a lull on Sunday, July 12th. The swell drops to 4 ft from the S, and the morning is clean with a cross-off NW breeze. It’s small, but the energy is still moderate at 608. A longboarder’s morning. Monday and Tuesday are small but clean, with waist-high waves and glassy conditions. Good for a mellow session.
Then we get a big red flag. Wednesday, July 15th shows a massive pulse of energy. The swell is 13 ft from the SW with a 15-second period – the combined energy is a whopping 8280. While the wind is cross-off and clean, this is way too big for this spot. Only absolute experts, if anyone, should even look at it. The same goes for Thursday, July 16th, with a huge 13 ft swell and fresh onshore winds making it a total mess.
The window closes with Sunday, July 19th. The ocean settles down. We get a clean 5 ft swell from the S with a 12-second period, and the wind is glassy from the ENE. The energy is a moderate 921. This is a nice, clean, forgiving wave to finish the run. The reef might be a bit crowded, as it’s a popular spot, but the conditions will be worth it.
Rusty.
