The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's on the menu for the next couple of weeks at our local reef break.
We’ve got a solid run of surf coming up, but it’s a bit of a mixed bag with some big, unruly swells that’ll only be for the experienced crew. The water is sitting at 62°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
The first real standout is Thursday morning, 16 July at Jongensfontein. The swell is a healthy 7ft from the SW with a period of 13 seconds, meaning it’s got some proper grunt behind it. The wind is light and cross-offshore, so the face is going to be clean. This is proper intermediate-to-expert territory, but the wave energy is cooking at 1741 which is a strong, solid push. This is your best morning of the week.
Friday morning, 17 July, sees a solid 7ft SW swell, but the wind is cross-on from the east. It’s still surfable with a light breeze, but the quality takes a hit. The energy drops to 1007, which is still moderate, but the wind will make it lumpy. Friday afternoon gets worse with a stronger easterly wind, so it's a write-off.
Saturday morning, 18 July, is a smaller 4ft from the S with light cross-off wind. It’s clean, but the energy is only 404, so it’s weaker. It’s a good option for a longboard or a fun learner wave, but not a standout.
Sunday morning, 19 July, brings a 5ft SW swell with a moderate cross-off breeze. The energy is 1040, so it’s got some push, but the wind is a bit more noticeable. It’s a solid session, but not pristine.
The next big highlight is further out. Monday morning, 20 July, is a gem. The swell is 5ft from the SSW, but the wind is glassy – dead calm. The energy is 667, which is moderate, but the glassy conditions will make it silky smooth. Expect very good, clean surf.
Now, a heads up for Tuesday, 21 July. The forecast is calling for a massive 15ft SW swell with a 15-second period, giving an energy reading of 8842. That is a serious amount of water moving. The wind is light and offshore, but it’s way too big for this break. If you’re not an expert, stay well clear.
The following week has a few more windows. Wednesday, 22 July morning has a 7ft SW swell with a gentle offshore wind, so it’s clean and powerful (2494 energy). Thursday, 23 July, repeats the massive swell pattern with 13ft to 15ft, too big again.
Friday, 24 July morning has a 10ft SSW swell with a light cross-off breeze. Still big, but the wind is okay. Experts only.
A real potential scorcher is Saturday, 25 July morning. It’s got a 6ft SW swell with a 12-second period, and the wind is glassy. The energy is 1621, so it’s got a good punch, and it’ll be clean. This is a very good option for experienced surfers.
Sunday, 26 July morning is another great one: 6ft SW swell, 14-second period, and glassy. The energy is 1427. This is a beautiful morning session.
The run finishes with Monday, 27 July morning, which is smaller at 3ft from the WSW, but glassy again. It’s a lovely, clean small-wave day.
So, to wrap it up: the best of the best are Monday morning, 20 July for the glassy conditions, and Saturday morning, 25 July and Sunday morning, 26 July for the combo of size and glassy perfection. Don't even think about Tuesday, 21 July or Thursday, 23 July unless you're a pro.
Rusty.
