The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s brewing for our local spot, Jongensfontein. We’ve got a solid 16-day window ahead, but it’s a bit of a mixed bag with some real classics and some periods where you’ll want to be doing something else.
The overall pattern starts with a building swell, then a big pulse that’s just too much for this reef, before it settles down again for some cleaner, more manageable waves. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing weird there.
Wednesday morning (15th) kicks things off with a 4 ft SW swell at 11 seconds. The combined swell energy is moderate (906). It’s not huge, but with a light cross-off W wind at 6 mph, the surface is clean. This is a good, gentle start to get the arms wet.
Thursday (16th) is where the fun really begins. The swell bumps up to 7 ft from the SW with a 13-second period, giving it some real push (combined energy of 1741). Morning winds are light and cross-off from the W at 6 mph, making for clean, powerful waves. This is excellent for experienced surfers, and honestly, the standout session of the first week. The afternoon stays solid at 6 ft with the same clean wind.
Friday (17th) is a write-off. The wind swings E and picks up, turning the 7 ft SW swell into a messy, cross-onshore chop. The energy is still moderate (990), but the quality is poor. Avoid this one.
Saturday (18th) sees a drop in size to 4 ft from the S, but the wind is back to a clean W cross-off. It’s a small, clean morning session for the log or a fish.
Sunday (19th) is a no-go. A 7 ft SW swell is there, but it’s getting hammered by a 22 mph WSW wind. The energy is strong (1305), but the wind is just too much. Kite surfers might be having a field day, but for paddle surfing, it’s a hard pass.
The first half of the following week, Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st, the swell gets bigger and bigger. Tuesday morning has a huge 12 ft SSW swell with a 16-second period, and the combined energy is a massive 6570. That’s serious power. But the report is clear: the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. The reef won’t handle it, and it’ll be a washing machine. This is strictly for experts only, and even then, it’s sketchy.
Wednesday 22nd through Friday 24th is a bit of a frustrating period. The swell stays oversized (10 ft to 12 ft) from the SW with strong energy (over 2700). It’s just too much for the reef to offer a good shape. Hold tight.
Then we get a beauty. Friday 24th morning is a gem. The swell drops to 8 ft from the SW, 13 seconds, and the magic happens: glassy, offshore NNW wind at 3 mph. The combined energy is 1823, so plenty of power. This is excellent for experienced surfers, and it’s the standout of the second week. The surface will be perfect.
Saturday 25th is another day of oversized swell (10 ft, 14 seconds, 3107 energy) with morning offshore winds, but again, too big for the break.
Sunday 26th morning is another glassy, clean morning. The swell is 7 ft from the SSW, 12 seconds, with light NW wind. The energy is 1268. This is a solid, clean session for the experienced crew.
The last few days, Monday 28th and Tuesday 29th, bring another big pulse (12 ft, 15-16 seconds, energy over 6000). Too big. The window closes with Wednesday 30th having an 8 ft SW swell, but E winds make it a messy onshore affair.
So, to wrap it up: the absolute best on offer is Thursday morning, July 16th for the first week, and Friday morning, July 24th for the second week. Mark those in your calendar.
