Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, let’s break this down for the imperial crew.
This whole 16-day window is all about one spot: Jongensfontein. It’s a reef setup, exposed, and it needs that south in the swell to wake up. Things start off a little quiet.
First Surfable Window: The Weekend
The real action kicks off Saturday morning, July 4th. And that morning is the clear winner of the whole forecast. We’re looking at a clean 6ft swell out of the ESE, with a solid 12-second period. The combined swell energy is a healthy 1369 (moderate to strong), so there’s real push behind those waves. The best part? It’s glassy. Dead flat. That means the wave face is going to be as smooth as butter for an intermediate surfer. The water temp is about average for this time of year. This is the session to plan for.
Saturday afternoon drops off a touch, getting a cross-on breeze, but the swell holds at 6ft from the ESE. A bit rougher. Sunday morning is clean again, with offshore winds from the NW, but the swell is smaller at 5ft from the ESE (761 combined energy). Still fun, just less power. Sunday afternoon gets a bit of a cross-on bump again.
Midweek Build-Up & A Missed Chance
Monday and Tuesday see the swell swing back to the SW, with waves around 5ft. The issue is the wind. Monday is a choppy, cross-onshore mess. Tuesday morning cleans up and goes glassy again (790 combined energy), but the size is just okay, not a standout. Wednesday, July 8th, is a tease. The swell jumps to 7ft from the SW with a long 13-second period and a big combined energy of 2222. The wind is a cross-offshore, so the face should be clean, but the conditions are tagged as marginal. Worth a look, but Saturday is still the one.
The Big Stuff & The Blown-Out Second Week
From Thursday, July 9th, through the weekend of July 12th, it gets grim. The swell gets big—we’re talking 7ft to 10ft—but it’s all from the SSW with howling onshore winds from the east (18 to 25 mph). The combined energy is massive, topping 3000, but the surface is junk: lumpy, choppy, and messy. Total write-off for surfing. For a kiteboarder, that wind and those waves might be a whole different story.
The Second Week: Too Much, Then a Cleanup
Monday, July 13th, offers a quick clean-up. Cross-offshore winds from the WSW and a 8ft ESE swell with a short 10-second period (1732 combined energy). It’s clean, but the period is a bit short for that size.
Then comes the monster. Wednesday, July 15th, through Thursday, July 16th, the forecast is for a massive 13ft SW groundswell with a very long 15-second period. The combined swell energy is insane, hitting 6790 on Wednesday afternoon. The wind is cross-offshore, so the faces would be clean, but the swell is just way too big for this reef. Only for the absolute experts, and even then, it’s pushing it.
The period finally settles down on Saturday, July 18th, with a smaller, cleaner 6ft SSW swell (1022 combined energy) under light offshore winds. A decent way to wrap up a pretty wild forecast.
The Verdict: Don’t overthink it. Saturday morning, July 4th, is your golden ticket. It’s the only time where the size, the clean glassy wind, and the good energy all come together. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or just plain too big.
Rusty.
