The Lowdown
Right, let's have a look at what we’ve got coming up for the next couple of weeks. We’ll be sticking with Jongensfontein here. It's a consistent, intermediate-level reef break.
We are starting off Monday the 24th of August with a bit of a slow start. There’s swell on the way, but the winds are just not playing ball, keeping conditions a bit messy. The 4ft SW groundswell on Monday morning has a moderate energy (557), but a cross-shore breeze messes it up. Not worth paddling out for. Monday afternoon gets a bit bigger to 5ft, but the wind goes cross-onshore, so still not the one.
Tuesday the 25th is a bit better on the numbers, but still not clean. Morning has 6ft of SW groundswell (1911), but a cross-onshore wind keeps it average. By Tuesday afternoon the wind picks up strength, so give it a miss.
Wednesday the 26th is a write-off, with strong onshore winds blowing everything out.
Now, here’s the standout. Thursday the 27th of August morning is where we need to be. We get a 6ft SSW groundswell (1316) with a light NNW offshore wind. That’s “cross-off”, which means the wind is pushing from behind the wave, giving us clean, groomed lines on the reef. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers—the swell is under 8ft, so it’s not too heavy, but it’s got enough push. The water temp is about average for this time of year. This is the best on offer from the whole outlook.
The rest of Thursday afternoon and Friday the 28th of August drop off because the wind shifts onshore again, turning the waves choppy.
The next real glimmer is Saturday the 29th of August morning. Only 3ft S swell (379), but with a light NW offshore breeze. It’s clean, but the energy is weak. It’s a small-wave session, a nice cruisy morning if you’re not fussy about size.
The second week starts to look pretty ordinary for decent surfing. Monday the 31st of August through to Tuesday the 1st of September is mostly plagued by onshore winds, strong winds, or messy cross-chop. There’s some size, like a 7ft SW swell on Monday afternoon (1566), but it’s lumpy.
We get a brief window on Wednesday the 2nd of September morning – fresh offshore wind with a 5ft SW swell (782). It’s clean, so you could get some, but the wind is fresh and strong. Not a standout, but it’s surfable.
The last real hope is Friday the 4th of September. A 8ft S swell (1121) and a cross-offshore breeze – that means it’s clean. The swell size is in that intermediate-advanced wheelhouse, so it’ll be a solid day.
By the 6th of September it gets silly. Sunday morning the 6th is seeing a massive 12ft SW groundswell (6062). That’s way too big for this break, the data says it’s too big. Leave that for the experts on a board, or the kite guys.
The last few days into the 8th of September are all onshore with poor quality.
So, to sum up the whole 16 days: The first week has the one true standout on Thursday morning the 27th of August with clean offshore conditions and a solid SW groundswell. The second week is mostly a miss, with a couple of surfable but not amazing windows. Keep an eye on forecasts, though, it won’t be dead forever.
