The Lowdown

G'day, Rusty here, and I've got the lowdown on the next few weeks at Jongensfontein. The water's sitting at 60°F which is a touch cooler than usual for this time of year, but nothing to get too worked up about. We've got a solid run of surf coming, but you've gotta pick your moments.

The action kicks off this Monday morning, 17 August. It's not the biggest, but the conditions are a treat. The swell is a clean 5ft from the SW, with a lovely 13-second period that's gonna wrap around the reef nicely. The wind is a light cross-off from the WNW, and the energy is moderate at 930. It's a cracker of a start to the week.

Monday afternoon gets messy with a stiff 16 mph SW wind that'll chop things up, so don't bother. Tuesday morning, 18 August, is a standout. The swell pulses to 6ft from the SW, still with that juicy 13-second period, and the wind is a light cross-off. The energy jumps to a strong 1124. This is clean, lined-up reef surf for the experienced crew. Tuesday arvo goes onshore, so skip it.

Wednesday morning, 19 August, is another gem. We've got 7ft of SW swell at 12 seconds, light cross-off wind from the W, and strong energy at 1445. Clean, powerful, and for the intermediate to advanced surfer. Wednesday afternoon is a write-off with strong WSW wind.

Thursday morning, 20 August, sees the swell jump to 10ft from the SW, with a massive 3496 energy reading. The wind is light and onshore, but honestly, at this size, this reef is for experts only. It's a big, powerful beast. The rest of the day is blown out.

Friday, 21 August, is a bit of a dud with onshore wind and dropping swell. Saturday, 22 August, shows a glimmer in the morning with 7ft of SW swell at 11 seconds and a cross-off wind. The energy is moderate at 1085, so it's a session for the keen, but not the best of the week.

Sunday morning, 23 August, is a special one. The wind goes glassy, absolutely dead calm, with 6ft of SW swell at 12 seconds. The energy is moderate at 870, but the conditions are flawless. This is a dawny to savour.

Monday, 24 August, starts well with a clean 6ft SW swell and a cross-off wind, but it's not as punchy. Tuesday, 25 August, is another morning worth a look: 8ft of SW swell at 12 seconds, light cross-off, and strong energy at 1655. This is for the experienced crew. After that, things get fluky.

The next real highlight is late in the window. Saturday morning, 29 August, we get 6ft of SW swell at 10 seconds, a cross-off wind, and clean conditions. The energy is moderate at 769. It's a solid, fun session.

Then we get a massive pulse on Sunday, 30 August, with 12ft of SW swell at 12 seconds and a massive 3457 energy. The wind is cross-shore, but for anyone with the skills, this is a monster. It's expert-only territory. The biggest of the run hits on Monday, 31 August: 12ft of SSW swell at 14 seconds, a clean cross-off wind, and a colossal 4918 energy. This is a serious, groundswell-driven swell. The period is very long, so it's going to be a peaky, powerful beast that will save its best for the reef. Again, only for the very experienced.

The best of the best? I'd have to say Tuesday morning, 18 August, and Sunday morning, 23 August. Tuesday for the pumping, clean power, and Sunday for the glassy, flawless conditions. Mark them in your calendar.

Rusty, signing off.
