The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down. Here’s what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
The first real surf to get excited about is this Sunday morning, the 19th of July, down at Jongensfontein. It’s a consistent reef break, exposed to the south swell, and it’s looking pretty tidy. We’ve got a 5ft SW swell rolling in with a solid 12-second period, and the wind is a clean offshore from the NW at 12 mph. The water is about average for this time of year, nothing out of the ordinary. The combined energy is sitting at 756, which is moderate, but the conditions are clean and the wave quality is good. Keep in mind, this spot can get crowded sometimes, so get in early.
Monday morning, the 20th, the swell holds around 5ft from the SW with a 10-second period. The wind swings a little more WNW, still a cross-off at 6 mph, keeping things clean. The energy is a touch higher at 858. It’s not a standout, but a solid session if you missed Sunday.
Now, the real standout. Tuesday morning, the 21st of July is the pick of the week. The swell pulses up to 7ft from the SSW, with a very long 14-second period – that’s proper groundswell. The energy jumps to 2161, which is moderate to strong. But the magic is in the wind: glassy. Absolutely glassy. A ENE breeze at just 3 mph. This is for experienced surfers though – 7ft on a reef with that period is no joke. The waves will have real shape and power, but the sets will be spaced out, making the paddle out a bit easier. This is the one to circle.
The swell gets bigger later in the week. Friday morning, the 24th of July, sees a massive 10ft SSW groundswell with a 15-second period and a massive energy reading of 4543. The wind is glassy again, calm from the north. But the truth is, it’s too big for this break. That’s expert-only territory, and even then, it might be a washing machine. The same goes for Monday the 27th, with an 12ft SSW swell and 18-second period, energy at 6735. That’s just a beast. Unless you’re a charger, sit that one out.
After that, the second week gets messy. From Tuesday the 28th right through to Wednesday the 30th, we’ve got strong cross-onshore winds, some light rain, and blown-out conditions. The swell is big but the quality is poor. Those are days to find something else to do.
The window opens again on Thursday morning, the 30th of July, but it’s an 12ft SE swell with a short 9-second period and the wind is cross. The energy is 2236, but the setup is too big and not well-shaped. It’s a pass for most.
The final sessions to look at are Friday the 31st of July and Saturday the 1st of August. Friday morning brings a 8ft SSW swell with a 12-second period, clean cross-off wind from the WSW at 9 mph, and an energy of 2302. That’s another one for experienced surfers, but the quality is excellent. Saturday morning is a similar story: 6ft SSW swell, 12-second period, and a clean offshore breeze from the NW at 16 mph. The energy is 1003. Good, solid, fun surf.
Then Sunday the 2nd of August starts with a smaller, glassy 4ft SSW swell, 11-second period, and an energy of 776. That’s a nice, relaxed morning session for everyone.
So to wrap it up: the absolute standout is Tuesday morning, the 21st of July. Glassy, long-period groundswell, moderate energy, and a clean reef. If you’re experienced, don’t miss it. The other good windows are Sunday morning the 19th, Friday morning the 31st, and Saturday morning the 1st of August. The rest of the time is either too big, too messy, or both.
