The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what’s on offer. There’s a bit of a mixed bag, but there’s some solid potential for the crew who are willing to sit through the wind.
The first proper surf we see is on Sunday morning, 19 July at Jongensfontein. It’s a consistent reef set-up, exposed to the swell. The water is sitting at 62°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year. We’ve got a 5ft SW swell rolling in with a period of 8 seconds, so it’s a bit short-period, but the wind is a clean NW offshore at 12 mph. The combined energy is moderate (540). It’s not huge, but it’ll be clean and fun. Crowds are possible here, so keep an eye out.
Monday morning, 20 July picks up a little. The swell bumps to 5ft from the SW, but the period jumps to 11 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell kicking in. The wind is WNW at 9 mph, cross-offshore, keeping things clean. Energy is moderate (829). This is a good option for a morning session.
Tuesday morning, 21 July sees the swell getting bigger – 7ft from the SSW with a very long period of 14 seconds. That’s a lot of energy (2192). The problem? The wind is a light cross-on from the E at 3 mph, so it’s not perfect. With that long period, the waves will be moving fast and holding shape, but the cross-on breeze will put a few ripples on the face. The size is getting big for beginners.
Wednesday morning, 22 July is a bit of a reset. Swell drops to 6ft from the SW, 12-second period, with a clean cross-offshore wind from the W at 16 mph. Energy is moderate (1085). This is a much cleaner option than the day before.
Now, the real standout is coming up on Friday morning, 24 July. The swell is 10ft from the SSW with a very long 15-second period. The combined energy is strong (4344). The wind is a gentle cross-on from the ENE at 9 mph, but the data says the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. This is for experts only – the size is over 8ft, so it’s not a beginner’s playground. The long period will make it powerful, and the reef will handle it well, but that cross-on wind will keep it from being perfect.
Saturday morning, 25 July has a 8ft SW swell with a 13-second period, but the wind is onshore from the SSE at 6 mph. The energy is high (2231), but the onshore flow will ruin the shape.
The surf stays on the bigger side through the start of the next week. Tuesday morning, 28 July shows a 12ft swell from the SE with a short 9-second period. The wind is a moderate cross-shore from the NE at 12 mph. Again, the data says it’s too big for this break, so only the most experienced should be looking.
Wednesday morning, 29 July is even bigger – 13ft from the ESE with a 10-second period. The combined energy is very strong (7507). Too big for this spot, and the wind is light cross-on. Not a paddle session.
Monday morning, 3 August is the final highlight. The swell is 8ft from the ESE with an 8-second period. The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the WSW at 9 mph. Energy is moderate (1702). The data says this is excellent for experienced surfers. It’s a solid pick for the crew who want a clean, powerful wave.
Overall, the best bet for clean, manageable size is Monday morning, 20 July. For the big-wave hunters, Friday morning, 24 July is the one to circle, but it’s a beast. The long-range call on Monday morning, 3 August looks promising with clean wind and decent size.
