Right, let’s have a look at what’s cooking at Jongensfontein. This is a reef set-up, and it’s a consistent spot that needs a solid NW wind to be clean. The water is sittin’ at 62°F, which is pretty much normal for this time of year – no weirdness there.
The week kicks off Saturday morning with a clean 6ft swell from the ESE, period 13 seconds, and a light N wind blowing cross-off. The combined energy is a solid 1205 – that’s strong wave energy. Conditions are excellent for experienced surfers, but that size is a bit much for beginners. Saturday afternoon goes glassy, dropping to 5ft from the ESE with a 12-second period, and combined energy still high at 970. That’s a beauty of a session.
Sunday morning keeps it going with a clean 4ft ESE swell, 12-second period, and a light WNW offshore wind. Combined energy is 661. Sunday afternoon goes glassy again with a 4ft ESE swell, period 12 seconds, and energy at 502. That’s prime, clean surf.
Monday morning turns a bit messy – a 5ft SW swell with a cross-on ENE wind, period 11 seconds, and energy 764. The quality drops, and it’s only marginal. Monday afternoon gets worse with a 5ft SW swell and a stronger cross-on E wind at 15 km/h, making it choppy. Not worth paddling out.
Tuesday morning sees a new pulse of 6ft SW swell, period 12 seconds, with a nice WNW cross-off wind. Combined energy is 921 – clean and fun for the experienced. Tuesday afternoon holds the 6ft SW swell but with a cross-shore wind, making it only marginal.
Wednesday brings the biggest swell of the early run – 6ft SW swell, period 13 seconds, combined energy shooting up to 1589 in the morning. But the wind is cross-shore, keeping it from being perfect. Wednesday afternoon is bigger energy at 1788, but the wind goes cross-on, so it’s a bit messy.
Thursday is the standout for the first week. Thursday morning serves up a 8ft SSW swell at 14 seconds, with combined energy of 2650 – that’s very strong. But the cross-on E wind at 20 km/h blows it out. This is only for experts, and even then, it’s choppy. Thursday afternoon is just as big but with a 25 km/h cross-on wind – poor.
Friday stays solid but messy: 7ft SSW swell, 13 seconds, energy 1752, but cross-on wind. Not great.
The second week looks quieter. Saturday 11 July is a write-off with strong onshore winds. Sunday 12 July is a nice surprise – a clean 4ft ESE swell, period 8 seconds, with a cross-off NNE wind. Combined energy 572. That’s a fun, clean morning. Sunday afternoon goes glassy with a 4ft E swell, period 9 seconds, energy 461 – lovely.
Monday 13 July drops to 2ft SW swell with a long 15-second period, but a strong 30 km/h cross-off wind makes it not worth it. Tuesday 14 July has a clean 5ft ESE swell, 8-second period, with a light WNW cross-off wind. Energy 639. That’s a good, clean session.
Wednesday 15 July is clean but smaller – 5ft SE swell, 9 seconds, energy 580, with a cross-off wind. Not a standout.
Friday 18 July sees a return of a clean 4ft SW swell, 14-second period, combined energy 815, with a cross-off W wind. That’s a promising end to the run, but still a week and a half away – keep an eye on it.
The best of the whole forecast is the Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon at the start. Glassy conditions, clean 4ft to 6ft ESE swell, and strong energy. That’s the one to circle.
Rusty.
