The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Alright, let's have a look at what's coming down the line for our little corner of the coast over the next couple of weeks. We've got a bit of a mixed bag, but there are definitely some windows of opportunity if you pick your moments.
The first real standout comes up fast, bright and early Sunday the 23rd. We're looking at a clean 6ft swell from the SW, with a nice 12-second period. The water's sitting at 61°, pretty much average for this time of year, which is fine. The wind is glassy, a light W breeze, and the combined energy is a solid 914, pushing into that moderate range. This is the one to chase – Jongensfontein is a reef break, so that long-period groundswell will wrap in nicely, and with those conditions, it's going to be absolutely pumping. It's a consistent spot, so you know it'll be breaking, and with a NW offshore and only "sometimes" crowds, you might even get a few to yourself. Get out there.
The next day, Monday the 24th, is a bit of a write-off. The swell drops a little to 4ft, but the wind swings onshore and makes a mess of things. Not worth the effort.
Now, Tuesday the 25th is another beauty. The morning session is looking prime, with a bigger 7ft swell from the SW and a 13-second period. The wind is glassy again, the energy is ramped right up to 1853, which is strong stuff. This is excellent surf, but at 7ft it's getting into that territory where it's for experienced surfers only. The afternoon gets ruined by a stiff cross-onshore, so get it while you can in the morning.
Wednesday the 26th is a complete blowout. Strong winds from the E, hitting 45 to 50 km/h, just hammer the place. The energy is through the roof, over 2000, but it's completely unsurfable. For kite surfing it would be a different story, but for a paddle, forget it.
We get a little reprieve on Thursday the 27th morning. Glassy conditions again, with a 6ft SW swell and 12-second period. The energy is a solid 1355. It's clean and set up well for a good session. The afternoon gets a bit funky with a shorter-period ESE windswell, but the morning is the call.
Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th are pretty average. The swell drops right off, down below 3ft, and the wind is all over the shop. Not much to get excited about.
The start of the following week, Monday the 31st of August, is small but clean. A 3ft WSW swell with a light offshore, but the energy is weak, only 283. You'd be on a log, but it would be a nice morning surf.
We then hit a gap from Tuesday the 1st of September right through until the next highlight. That Tuesday brings a solid 8ft SW swell, but with onshore winds, it's just a mess.
Then, Wednesday the 2nd of September morning is a proper standout for the second week. The swell is 7ft from the SW with a 12-second period, and the wind is a light offshore from the WNW. The energy is 1506, strong, and the conditions are clean. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers, another big day. The afternoon gets a little bumpy, but that morning window is a gem.
After that, the wind turns nasty again. Thursday the 3rd is a near gale from the west, making it impossible. The swell hangs around 5ft, but it's a lost cause.
Friday the 4th of September is small and clean in the morning with a light offshore, but the swell is only 3ft.
Saturday the 5th of September morning looks promising on paper with a 8ft S swell, but the wind is a strong 40 km/h cross-offshore. It's clean, but that kind of wind makes paddling out and holding your position a real battle.
Sunday the 6th of September afternoon sees a massive 10ft WSW swell, but that's too big for the break and the wind is messy. A total no-go.
Monday the 7th is another day with a 5ft swell but hammered by strong winds. So, for the second week, your one true call is Wednesday the 2nd of September morning. Keep an eye on that one.
Rusty.
