The Lowdown
Right, g’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s comin’ down the line for the next couple of weeks.
Alright, so we’ve got a solid run of surf ahead for Jongensfontein, but it’s not all plain sailing. The first few days are looking good, then we hit a rough patch, but things turn around again in the end.
Kicking off on Monday, the 20th of July, we’ve got a clean 5-foot south-west swell with a 11-second period. The wind’s off the land from the north-west, light at 6 mph, so it’s gonna be smooth. The combined energy is moderate at 738. That’s a nice session to ease into the week.
Tuesday the 21st is the real standout. The morning is glassy, wind is a whisper from the west-south-west at 3 mph, and the swell is a solid 8 feet from the south-south-west, with a 14-second period. That’s proper groundswell, and with 2406 of combined energy, it’s got some serious grunt. This is one for the experienced crew – it’s gonna be powerful and clean. A real treat.
Wednesday the 22nd is still firing in the morning. We’ve got a 6-foot south-west swell, 12-second period, and a cross-off wind from the west at 9 mph keeping it clean. Combined energy is 1260. Another top session for those who know what they’re doin’.
Thursday the 23rd keeps the quality going in the morning. 8 feet from the south-west with an 11-second period, light offshore from the west-north-west at 6 mph. Clean, powerful, and 1367 combined energy. Then Friday the 24th, the swell jumps to 10 feet from the south-south-west with a 14-second period. That’s a big one – over 8 feet, so it’s experts only. The winds are light, but the size is the story here. The energy is a massive 4249 in the morning. Only the brave.
Now, from Saturday the 25th through to Tuesday the 29th, we hit a bit of a lull. The wind is onshore or cross-onshore, choppy, and the quality drops right off. The swell is still there, but the conditions are poor. It’s a bit of a write-off for a few days.
But hang tight, because Wednesday the 30th of July brings the goods back. Morning session with a 6-foot south-south-west swell, 12-second period, and a light cross-offshore from the west-north-west at 6 mph. Clean, 1342 energy, and excellent for experienced surfers. After that, the 31st is okay, but then the first of August sees a howling offshore gale – 31 mph from the north-west – making it near impossible to paddle. Tiny swell too. The 2nd is also blown out.
The window closes on Monday the 3rd of August with a 4-foot south-west swell, 13-second period, and a cross-off wind. It’s a bit marginal, but it’s a sign of life. Then Tuesday the 4th of August is the final highlight: a 7-foot south-west swell with a 14-second period, light cross-offshore from the north-north-east at 6 mph, and 1795 energy. Clean and powerful – another one for the experienced crew.
As for the water temp, it’s about average for this time of year at this break, so no unexpected chills or warmth.
So, to sum it up: the best windows are Tuesday the 21st and Tuesday the 4th of August. The swell is big, the wind is right, and the energy is pumping. The rest of the time has its moments, but those two mornings are the ones to circle.
Catch ya out there. Rusty.
