The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here, checking in from the lineup. We’ve got a solid 16-day window ahead, but it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The first good surf doesn’t fire up until Wednesday morning, the 19th, so we’ve got a quiet start. After that, there’s a couple of real standouts, but also a few stretches where you’ll want to be picky. Let’s get into it.

We kick off on Wednesday morning, the 19th of August. Jongensfontein (reef) is the first call. The water’s sitting at 61°, which is about normal for this time of year. Early doors, it’s glassy – a clean 7ft SW swell, with a solid 12-second period. The combined energy is strong at 1432, so there’s plenty of push. This is an exposed reef, so it’s a spot for experienced surfers only. The swell direction is SW, which is just off the optimum S, but it’s still working. Crows can be a problem here sometimes, so keep that in mind. Wednesday afternoon goes cross-shore and messy, so the morning is the pick.

Thursday morning, the 20th, is a real standout. Jongensfontein lights up with a clean 10ft SSW swell, 13-second period, and a light offshore wind coming from the west. The combined energy is pumping at 3405. This is big, powerful, and only for the experienced crew. The swell is over 8ft, so leave the beginners on the beach. This is a genuine top-shelf session if you’ve got the skills.

Thursday afternoon sees a drop in quality, and Friday the 21st is a write-off with strong cross-onshore winds making a mess of things. Saturday the 22nd has a small, clean window in the morning with a 4ft SW swell, but it’s marginal. Sunday the 23rd is another morning gem – glassy again, 8ft SW swell, 12-second period, and strong energy at 1577. Another one for the experienced crew.

There’s a bit of a quiet patch through Monday and Tuesday, with onshore winds and choppy conditions. Wednesday morning the 26th delivers again – a clean 6ft SSW swell, 14-second period, with a light offshore from the NNE. The combined energy is 1526. This is a proper, long-period groundswell that will hit the reef nicely. Another excellent session for the experts.

Thursday morning the 27th is a smaller, glassy option – 4ft S swell, 11-second period, energy at 557. It’s not huge, but it’ll be clean and fun. After that, we’ve got a few days of choppy, messy conditions until another solid window opens up on Tuesday morning, the 1st of September. That’s a glassy 5ft SW swell, 13-second period, with energy at 1448. Clean and punchy.

Then, on Thursday the 3rd of September, we’ve got a massive swell on the charts – 15ft SW, 13-second period, with a combined energy over 7000. That’s huge, dangerous, and only for the absolute elite. The wind is light and onshore, so it’s going to be a beast.

The best on offer across the whole period? Thursday morning the 20th of August – that 10ft SSW swell with offshore wind is the standout. Second best is Wednesday morning the 26th of August – the 6ft SSW groundswell with clean conditions. Get out there if you can handle it.

Rusty.
