The Lowdown

G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's have a look at what's comin' our way for Jongensfontein.

The next week or so is a bit of a mixed bag, but there's a couple of absolute crackers lined up that'll have you reaching for your board. The water temp's sittin' pretty at 61°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

Right off the bat, Friday the 21st is a write-off. We've got a 6ft SW windswell with a short 11-second period, and that easterly breeze is smashing it sideways, making for some poor, choppy conditions. Saturday the 22nd is only marginally better. The swell drops a touch to 5ft, but the wind's still messy, flipping around from the west to southwest and keeping things lumpy.

Now, Sunday the 23rd is where things start to look up. The morning is a gem. We've got a clean 6ft SW groundswell with a 12-second period (moderate wave energy of 964) and the wind is glassy – dead calm. That's about as good as it gets for a clean session. It's a bit big for beginners, but for the rest of us, it's a beauty. The afternoon sees the wind shift onshore, so get in early.

Monday the 24th keeps the good vibes rollin' with a cleaner morning. The swell drops to 4ft SW, 11-second period (moderate energy of 526), and that light WSW cross-offshore breeze will have the lines lookin' tidy. Easy paddlin' out, too.

We hit a bit of a rough patch from Tuesday the 25th through Wednesday the 26th. The swell bumps up to 8ft on Tuesday, but that easterly wind comes howlin' in, especially Wednesday with 28 mph gusts. It's gonna be a messy, blown-out mess. Not worth the hassle.

Now, hold onto your leash, because Thursday the 27th is the standout of the whole outlook. The morning is pure magic. A clean 6ft S groundswell with a very long 15-second period is pumpin' in, and the wave energy is strong at 1913. The wind is glassy – dead calm, offshore from the northwest. This is an expert-only zone at this size and with that long period, the sets will be powerful and lined up beautifully on the reef. It's a consistent spot, but it's an intermediate-to-expert wave, so know your limits. Crowds are possible.

The rest of that week into the weekend (28th-30th) gets messy again with shifting winds and increasing size. By Saturday the 29th afternoon, it's a massive 10ft, but the wind is a fresh cross-shore and the break is considered too big (moderate energy of 1941). Sunday the 30th is even bigger at 12ft (very strong energy of 3809) – definitely only for the brave and experienced.

The following week from the 31st into early September is sketchy. The 31st has some okay morning waves (7ft) but that cross-on wind holds it back. Then we get a run of poor, wind-affected days until Thursday the 3rd of September, where the swell bumps up to a massive 10ft in the morning and 13ft in the afternoon (very strong energy of 9414). Again, this is too big for the break and mainly for experts on a big day.

The outlook finishes on the 5th of September with another huge 10ft SW groundswell (very strong energy of 3879), but the wind is solid cross-off from the west in the morning. It'll be clean, but it's a big, powerful wave an' the break might be too big again. If you're an experienced charger, that Saturday morning could be one for the books, but it's a long way out, so keep an eye on it.

So, your best bets are clear: get out there Sunday morning the 23rd and don't miss Thursday morning the 27th. That Thursday is the real gem.

Rusty.
