The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, checking in from the South African coast. The next couple of weeks at Jongensfontein are a mixed bag of solid, powerful groundswells and some wild, blown-out days. We’ve got a real standout session early on, but patience is the name of the game after that.
The first swell of the window hits on Wednesday morning the 19th of August. It’s a clean 7ft SW groundswell with a 12-second period, and the wind is absolutely glassy – 0 mph. That combined energy is pumping at 1432 (moderate wave energy), meaning there’s real grunt in the water. The water is sitting at 61°F, which is bang on average for this time of year. This is intermediate-level reef stuff, so it’s not for the groms, but for experienced surfers it’s excellent. The swell direction is straight from the SW, which is exactly what this break loves. Keep in mind it’s a consistent spot, and crowds are possible, so get in early.
The real standout, though, is Thursday morning the 20th. The swell jumps to a solid 10ft from the SW with a 14-second period – that’s a long-period groundswell packing some serious energy (3770). The wind is a light W at 6 mph, giving us a cross-off shore that will keep the faces clean. This is a big one. At 10ft, it’s strictly for experts. The reef setup here should handle that long-period swell well, shaping up some proper waves. This is the best on offer.
Thursday afternoon, the wind swings to a cross-on S breeze, and the quality drops. Friday the 21st is a write-off with strong E winds and choppy, lumpy conditions. Saturday the 22nd sees a drop in size to 5ft SW, but the wind is cross-off in the morning, offering a clean if modest session. Sunday the 23rd morning is glassy with 6ft SW groundswell, still good for experienced surfers, but the energy is down compared to Thursday.
Monday the 24th rolls in with smaller 4ft SW swell, but the wind is onshore, so it’s marginal. Tuesday the 25th is a total loss – fresh E winds and lumpy, poor surf. Wednesday the 26th morning brings a reprieve: 6ft SW groundswell with a light N cross-off breeze and clean conditions. The energy is moderate (1123), and it’s surfable for the experienced crew.
Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th are mostly poor, with Friday morning dropping to 2ft S swell with only 95 energy – barely a ripple. Saturday the 29th is a no-go: 12ft SW swell, but howling onshore winds from the ESE at 22-25 mph create messy, lumpy conditions. That’s kite-surfing territory, not paddle surfing.
Sunday the 30th has a 8ft S swell with a cross-on wind in the morning, but the afternoon shows a strong cross-off from the WSW at 19 mph, cleaning it up for a solid 7ft S swell with 1712 energy. Worth a look if you can handle the wind. Monday the 31st of August morning is a beauty: 5ft SW groundswell with a 14-second period, light offshore WNW wind, and clean conditions. The energy is 1459, and it’s excellent for experienced surfers.
Tuesday the 1st of September morning is also clean with a 5ft SW swell and 15-second period, offering long, powerful lines. Wednesday the 2nd morning goes glassy but the swell drops to 3ft SW with only 411 energy – small but fun. After that, Thursday the 3rd looks poor with strong onshore winds again.
So, to sum it up: Thursday the 20th of August is the absolute standout – big, clean, and powerful. The Wednesday the 19th morning and Monday the 31st morning are also excellent. The rest of the run has some clean windows, but you’ll have to pick your moments.
Rusty, signing off.
