The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break down what’s coming. We’ve got a 16-day window, but it’s a slow starter. The first few days are small, and it’s not until we hit the middle of the first week that things get interesting. The water temp is 62°F, which is about normal for this time of year.
The spot to watch is Jongensfontein, a reef break that’s exposed to the south. It’s consistent, but it can get a few folks out there.
The first surfable session is on Tuesday 14th July morning. The wind is light WSW, blowing cross-offshore, and the swell is 5ft from the ESE, with a 9-second period. The combined energy is moderate at 379. It’s clean, small, and fun.
Wednesday 15th July morning is a step up. The swell is 4ft, but it’s from the SW with an 11-second period, and the energy jumps to 721. The wind is light WNW, cross-offshore, and the forecast says “expect very good surf conditions.” A nice little window.
The big standout of the first week is Thursday 16th July morning. Clear skies, a light NNW wind blowing straight offshore, and a solid 7ft SW groundswell. The period is 14 seconds, so it’s a real long-period swell with heaps of energy—1785. This is an excellent session for experienced surfers. The size is too much for beginners.
After that, the wind turns onshore for a few days. Friday 17th gets messy, and Saturday 18th is a total washout—strong cross-on winds and lumpy chop. That stretch of poor surf runs from Friday afternoon through Monday 20th, so a few days with nothing.
We get a clean-up on Sunday 19th morning: 5ft SW swell, 12-second period, and a light cross-off wind. Decent.
Then the big stuff arrives. Tuesday 21st July brings a massive 10ft SSW groundswell, 16-second period, and energy of 4310. The wind is glassy offshore, but the swell is too big for this reef. Experts only, and even then, it’s pushing it. Wednesday 22nd has a 12ft SW swell, Thursday 23rd has a 13ft SSW swell. This is serious, potentially dangerous surf. It might be better suited for kite surfing on the biggest days.
The next true standout is Friday 24th July morning. The swell drops to a still solid 7ft from the S, 12-second period, with a light NW offshore wind. Energy is 1805. The forecast says “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” This is a great window.
Saturday 25th morning is also a beauty: 7ft SW swell, 14-second period, light NW offshore wind, and energy of 2057. Another excellent session.
Sunday 26th has a poor morning but a glassy afternoon: 6ft SW swell, 15-second period, and energy of 1716. Clean and glassy.
The final week winds down. Monday 27th is marginal, but Tuesday 28th morning looks good: 4ft SW swell, 13-second period, light NNE cross-off wind, and clean conditions.
So, the best calls are Thursday 16th July morning for the first big clean groundswell, and Friday 24th and Saturday 25th mornings for the next proper swell window. The middle of the second week is a monster, so be smart out there.
Rusty.
