Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, groms and salt dogs, Rusty here with the lowdown for our local reef, Jongensfontein.
We’ve got a wild ride coming over the next couple of weeks. It starts off promising, then gets real heavy, before cleaning up for a few windows of glory later on. There’s a big shot of energy in the middle of the week, but it brings some serious size that’ll separate the men from the boys.
Tuesday morning (07 July) is the one to circle. There’s a clean 6ft swell rolling in from the southwest at 12 seconds, and the wind is dead glass out of the West at only 3 mph. The water’s sitting at 62°, which is pretty normal for this time of year. The combined energy is moderate (934), but that offshore breeze is going to make this reef look like a skating rink. Get out there before the wind switches onshore in the afternoon.
Wednesday (08 July) is a bit bigger, with 6ft from the same direction, but the wind is a clean cross-off at 12 mph. The energy is ramping up (1498). The morning is your window; the afternoon is a mess with a strong onshore wind.
Now, here’s where it gets spicy. Thursday (09 July) and Friday (10 July) bring a proper pulse. Thursday has 8ft SSW swell with a 14-second period, and the energy is a solid 2708. But the wind is cross-onshore, so you’re looking at choppy, powerful conditions. Friday is the big one: 10ft from the SSW, with energy over 3496. The morning is glassy, but this is too much swell for this break. If you’re not an expert, don’t even paddle out. The swell is way over 8ft and will be dangerous.
Saturday (11 July) through Tuesday (14 July) is mostly a washout with onshore winds, clean up nicely on the Tuesday morning (14 July) with a light offshore breeze. But the swell is small, only 4ft.
Then we get a gem. Friday afternoon (17 July) is a true long-range standout. The swell is a small 4ft from the East with a 10-second period, but the wind is dead glass again. The energy is moderate (890). That’s going to be clean, fun, and uncrowded if the forecast holds. The morning of Friday also has a small, clean option.
Saturday (18 July) is junk again. Sunday morning (19 July) bounces back with 5ft ESE swell and a light cross-off breeze. Clean, workable waves. The energy is 654.
After that, the tap turns off. From Monday (20 July) through Wednesday (22 July), the swell drops to 2-3ft, the energy craters to a weak 213-590, and the winds are mostly onshore or side-on. It’s a long, flat finish to the 16-day run. With the combined energy so low, it’s going to be a tough time getting a decent ride.
The Best on Offer: Your top pick is without a doubt Tuesday morning (07 July) —6ft, glassy, clean, perfect for that reef. For the second week, keep your eyes on Friday afternoon (17 July) . That 4ft, glassy window is the best you’ll see in the long range, but it’s far out, so treat it with cautious stoke.
It’s not all doom and gloom; it just takes a bit of patience to find the clean moments.
