The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's break down the next couple of weeks for this stretch of coast. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, so let’s get to it.
The opening days are a slow burner. Tuesday the 18th has some mushy, junky swell, with a solid 8ft of SW swell but poor conditions. Not worth the effort. Wednesday the 19th looks better, but only for the more experienced. The morning is your window with clean, cross-off conditions and a solid 7ft SW swell at 12 seconds. That has some push. The afternoon turns into a cross-chop mess, so get your waves early.
Then Thursday the 20th throws a curveball. The morning shows a big 10ft SW swell with glassy conditions, and the wind and tide are favorable, but it’s just going to be too much water moving for this spot. This is expert-only territory, and even then, it could be a washing machine. The energy reading is huge at 3659, so there’s serious power in the water. Swell that size will close out the bay. Best to watch from shore. The afternoon drops to 8ft but gets onshore and messy. Not good.
Friday the 21st is a complete write-off. The wind is howling from the east all day, onshore and strong, making a mess of the 6ft SW swell. Don't even bother. Saturday the 22nd offers a small window in the morning. The wind goes cross-off, but it’s howling at 22 mph, making it a battle. The swell is small at 5ft, so it will be a struggle for little reward. The afternoon turns into a complete cross-shore mess.
Sunday the 23rd is where things get interesting. The morning shows 8ft of SW swell at 12 seconds, with light cross-off winds and clean conditions. This is a proper session for the intermediate-to-expert surfer. The energy is solid at 1477. This could be one of the better ones of the week. The afternoon remains rideable at 7ft but with more onshore push.
Monday the 24th has some fun, smaller waves. The morning offers a clean 4ft SSW swell with light winds. A fun, cruisy session for those wanting an easier paddle. The afternoon sees it pick up slightly to 5ft but with more onshore wind.
Then we hit a flat spell. The 25th is a total loss with fresh onshore winds and lumpy conditions. The 26th starts off clean and glassy early with a small 4ft SW swell, but it’s pretty weak. The 27th has clean morning waves at 5ft, but it’s a bit of a mixed bag.
Look ahead, and there are a couple of more promising days. Friday the 28th shapes up nicely. There’s a long-period SW groundswell at 4ft and 16 seconds. The long period means it will be more lined-up and powerful for the size. Light offshore winds will keep it clean. A good day for the longboarders. The long period on a reef like this should be a treat.
The weekend gets blown out again. Saturday the 29th is a no-go with a strong southeasterly gearing up and rain. But Sunday the 30th has a nice surprise. The morning is glassy with a 7ft E swell at a short 8 seconds. It’s a different direction, which might make it a bit sectiony, but the clean, glassy conditions will make the most of it. The energy is moderate. An early session will be the go.
The month rolls over to September and the surf keeps coming. Monday the 31st has a solid 8ft SW swell with a period of 15 seconds. The morning is onshore and lumpy, but the afternoon is the standout. The wind drops to glassy and the swell is still a powerful 8ft with a very long 15-second period. This will be a day for the crew who know how to handle a proper reef. The energy is strong at 2661. This is the pick of the second week, but it's a long way out, so don't hold me to it.
The first of September is a write-off for the most part. Tuesday morning is onshore and weak, and the afternoon gets blown out. Wednesday the 2nd has a clean morning with cross-off winds and a 5ft SW swell, but the swell is a bit weak, and the afternoon sees strong winds messing it all up again.
All in all, there’s action to be had if you pick your moments. The standouts for me are Sunday the 23rd, and that glassy Monday afternoon on the 31st. The rest is a case of checking the forecast and being flexible. Water temps are sitting around 61°F, which is about average for the time of year.
This is Rusty, signing off.
