The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty. Let’s be straight with you: this is a tough stretch for Foz do Lizandro. The forecast is pretty much a flat spell for the next handful of days, with no real surf to speak of. From Thursday 16 July right through until the end of the month, every single session is marked as poor surf conditions. We’re looking at a long, dry run of barely any rideable waves, so don’t get your hopes up for a quick fix.
Thursday 16 July starts it off with a tiny 2 ft west swell, period a weak 9 seconds, and the combined energy is a measly 46 – that’s weak. Wind is a cross-on 6 mph from the WNW, and the water temp is sitting at 67°, which is about average for this time of year. Not a single standout here. The swell barely cracks 2 ft, and it’s all cross-onshore breeze, making it choppy and messy.
Friday 17 July through to Wednesday 22 July is the same story: swell heights hovering around 1.0 ft to 1 ft, periods mostly 8 to 10 seconds, and the combined energy stays below 100 – weak. Winds are cross-on from the NNW or NW, 9 to 16 mph, keeping it choppy. No breaks worth highlighting, just a long stretch of flat, junk conditions.
Thursday 23 July to Sunday 26 July, the swell tries to nudge up a little, with a couple of 2 ft and 4 ft pulses, but the period is short (4 to 8 seconds), and the energy finally hits moderate values like 140 and 124 on the 24th and 26th. Still, the wind is cross-on or cross-shore, 6 to 19 mph, and the surf remains poor. The 4 ft on 24 July afternoon might look tempting, but it’s a short-period windswell with a cross-onshore breeze – not worth the paddle.
The final week, from 28 July to 31 July, sees a few bigger numbers: on Tuesday 28 July afternoon, the swell hits 3 ft from the NW, period 8 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 204 – that’s moderate energy. But again, the wind is cross-on from the NW at 12 mph, and the surf quality is still rated poor. On 30 July, we get a 3 ft WNW swell with a 10-second period and energy at 196, but the wind is a fresh cross-shore from the N at 22 mph, making it lumpy. On 31 July morning, the wind finally goes light cross-off from the NNE, and it goes clean, but there’s zero swell – no height, no period, no energy. So even the cleanest conditions don’t save us.
There are no standout days, no best-of-the-best. The whole 16-day window is a bust for waves. Foz do Lizandro is a river mouth, fairly consistent, but this run is a real flat spell. For a beginner-friendly spot, it’s not looking like there’s anything to learn on either. If you must get wet, maybe wait for a rare clean day, but there’s no swell to back it up.
Rusty.
