The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m gonna be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are a tough watch for the surf at Foz do Lizandro. The whole 16-day window is a real struggle. There’s nothing that’s even close to a standout, and most days are just a write-off. We’ve got a solid run of poor surf conditions from the start on Wednesday the 15th of July, right through to the end of the month. It’s a long, flat, choppy stretch.
The water temp is sitting at about 66°, which is bang on average for this time of year – no nasty surprises there.
For the first week, from Wednesday the 15th through to around Tuesday the 21st of July, it’s tiny and messy. Swell heights are mostly around 1.0 ft to 2 ft, and the combined energy is weak – we’re talking numbers like 38 (Wednesday morning) down to 11 (Sunday morning). The wind is a constant cross-onshore, with speeds from 3 mph up to 16 mph, so it’s choppy and bumpy. It’s a river break, beginner-friendly, but with no push and sloppy conditions, there’s nothing to ride. The period is short, mostly 6 to 9 seconds, so no real power coming through.
From Wednesday the 22nd of July through to Sunday the 26th, a little more swell tries to show up, but it’s still not enough. On Saturday the 25th of July, the swell height climbs to 5 ft in the morning and 5 ft in the afternoon, with combined energy jumping to 239 and 295 – that’s moderate wave energy. But the wind is still a moderate cross-onshore, 12 to 16 mph, keeping it choppy. The period is only 7 seconds, so it’s a weak, disorganised wind swell. The forecast still says “poor surf conditions” for every single slot. That’s brutal.
Then the final stretch, Monday the 27th of July through to Thursday the 30th, the energy drops right back down. The swell is 1 ft to 2 ft, energy in the 35 to 70 range, and the wind is still cross-onshore or cross-shore but choppy. On the 30th, the swell flatlines – no height, no period, no energy. It’s a dead blank.
There’s no standout here. The best you’d get is maybe the 25th of July, with 5 ft to 5 ft swell, but it’s a short-period wind swell, cross-onshore, and the quality is poor. That’s not a day to paddle out. Honestly, if you’re looking at the beach setup with the wind and the small, messy swell, it’s more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. But for a surfer? There’s just nothing on offer across the whole 16 days.
Rusty.
