The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for Foz do Lizandro over the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a rough start and a long wait, but there’s a glimmer of something bigger way out there.

The immediate forecast is a bit of a bummer. We’ve got a real flat spell on our hands. For the first several days, from Tuesday the 14th through the rest of that week, the energy is just not there. The combined swell energy is weak (between 18 and 81), with tiny waves mostly under 2ft and a messy onshore or cross-onshore wind from the NW. The water temp is sitting at 66°, which is about a degree and a half colder than normal for this time of year – feels a bit nippy.

We roll into the weekend of the 18th and 19th, and it’s still very ordinary. Tiny, chopped-out surf from the NNW with short, weak periods. Not worth paddling out for, really.

The following week gets a little more interesting in terms of size, but the quality is still an issue. On Monday the 20th, we see a slight bump to about 4ft from the NNW, with combined energy finally cracking the triple digits (103 in the morning, 107 in the afternoon). But that’s still under a strong cross-onshore wind, making it a bit of a bumpy mess. The pattern continues through the middle of the week – a few more waist-chest high sets from the WNW, but always with that wind messing it up.

Now, here’s where we look long range, so take it with a pinch of salt. The standout potential comes right at the very end of the forecast window. Around Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th (that’s 13-14 days out), the combined swell energy jumps into the 800s. We’re looking at NW swell in the 5-6ft range with a solid period of 10-11 seconds – that’s real groundswell energy. Foz do Lizandro (Portugal) could actually have some proper sized waves on offer.

But – and it’s a big but – the wind is howling from the NNW, pushing 18-25 mph, and it’s coming straight cross-onshore. With that much juice and that much wind, the ocean is going to be lumpy, messy, and pretty tough to handle. For the average surfer, the 5-6ft size is solid, but with strong cross-onshore wind making it ropy, honestly, this setup looks way more interesting for kite surfing than for paddling in. It’s not going to be clean.

On top of that, Foz do Lizandro is a river mouth that’s exposed to the swell, with crowds that do show up “sometimes.” If we get that late-period swell, you can bet it’ll be busy.

So, the best shot for a wave is that end-of-month pulse. But it comes with a full on wind warning. The rest of the period is pretty grim. Keep an eye on it, but for now, don’t get your hopes up for a clean session until maybe that last week – and even then, you’ll be fighting the wind.

Stay patient.
Rusty.
