Alright, I’m Rusty, and here’s how it’s looking for the local stretch. The only spot with any real info is Foz do Lizandro, and honestly, the first week and a half is a bust. We’re talking a long, flat, and choppy run where even a foamie will feel useless. The first hint of something surfable doesn’t show up until the middle of the second week.
Foz do Lizandro is a river mouth break that’s fairly consistent and beginner-friendly, exposed to the southwest swell. Water temp is around 67°, right about normal for this time of year, so no wetsuit worries. But from Sunday July 5th through Friday July 10th, it’s tiny. Swell heights are 1 ft to 2 ft, periods mostly 8–10 seconds, and the wind is cross-on or cross from the NNW or NW, kicking up a choppy mess. Combined wave energy is weak, from 16 to 108 (moderate at best on the 9th afternoon), but every session is marked “poor surf conditions.” No dice for surfing.
Saturday July 11th afternoon sees a slight bump to 3 ft swell from the WNW, 9-second period, with energy hitting 174 (moderate), but the cross-on wind at 12 mph keeps it rough.
Sunday July 12th is the real standout. The morning shows 3 ft swell from the WNW, 9-second period, light cross-on breeze (6 mph), and energy at 176 (moderate). Then the afternoon improves: 4 ft swell, same direction and period, with an onshore wind at 9 mph (gentle). The energy climbs to 218 (strong). That’s the best of the whole 16 days—cleaner, more push, and good for a longboard or small craft. Crowds are possible (sometimes busy), and at 4 ft it’s still fine for most surfers.
After that, it’s back to mediocrity. Monday July 13th morning has a 1 ft swell with a long 13-second period, cross-shore wind, but energy is weak (47). The long-period groundswell might wrap into the river mouth, but with no height it’s a non-starter. The rest of the second week—through Monday July 20th—is mostly 2 ft to 3 ft slop, short periods (some as low as 4 seconds on Tuesday July 7th afternoon), cross-on winds, and energy from weak to moderate (62 to 219). The 14th Tuesday morning does hit 3 ft and 219 energy, but it’s cross-shore and choppy. The 18th Saturday afternoon shows 4 ft north-northwest windswell with a 5-second period, but it’s cross-on and turbulent.
By July 19th and 20th, we’re down to 0.3 ft to 0.7 ft swells with long 15-second periods from the SW or W, and energy is pitiful (9–16). Onshore winds keep it flat and messy.
So, bottom line: if you’re itching for a wave, Sunday July 12th afternoon at Foz do Lizandro is your one real chance at something decent. Everything else is a scratch. For kite surfers, the consistent cross-on breeze on days like the 11th or 14th might be more fun than a surfboard. For the rest of us, it’s a waiting game. Forecasts can change, but right now, the ocean’s not cooperating.
Rusty.
