Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on the table for Foz do Lizandro over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you – this one’s a bit of a heartbreaker. We’ve got a long, quiet stretch ahead with barely a ripple worth paddling for, so patience is the name of the game.
Right now, and for most of the first week, we’re looking at a whole lot of nothing. The swell is tiny, mostly around 0.3ft to 1ft, with weak energy readings like 6 and 17. The wind is a real problem too – cross-shore and cross-onshore, chopping it all up. You’d be wasting your time. Even the water temp is sitting at about 66°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year, so that’s not the issue. The issue is a flat spell.
We do have a small window of hope, but it’s a distant one. The first real standout, and I mean the only one worth circling on the calendar, is Wednesday morning, July 15th. We’re talking about a potential session at Foz do Lizandro (Portugal). The swell picks up to 3ft from the WNW, with a combined energy of 200 – that’s moderate energy, enough to get moving. The period is 10 seconds, so it’s got a bit of shape to it. But the real magic is the wind: glassy. Flat calm, no wind at all. That means clean, smooth waves for the river mouth. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, and it’s fairly consistent, but it can get crowded sometimes. For a morning like that, it’ll be worth it.
Leading up to that, there’s a marginal call on Tuesday morning, July 14th, with 3ft swell from the WNW (12-second period) and a light cross-onshore breeze. The energy is 202, but the wind is just enough to wrinkle the surface. It’s a maybe, not a yes.
After that July 15th high point, it fades again. Thursday the 16th is glassy but barely a ripple at 2ft, and then it’s back to onshore winds and tiny waves through the 17th. Honestly, for most of this forecast, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, with those fresh cross-shore winds and bigger swell days that are just too choppy.
So here’s the takeaway: wait for the morning of Wednesday, July 15th. That’s your one shot at something clean. The rest is a waiting game.
Rusty.
