The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Foz do Lizandro over the next couple of weeks.
First up, the water temp is sitting at 66°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you might want an extra mm or two of rubber.
Right now, things are pretty grim. We've got a bit of swell showing but the wind is ruining it. Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are a write-off with strong cross and onshore winds making a mess of things. The swell is there, around 6ft to 8ft, but it's lumpy and choppy – not worth paddling out.
Tuesday the 25th drops right off. We're looking at tiny 4ft to 5ft waves with a short period, and the wind is still cross-on. The combined energy is weak (193), so it's a real flat spell setting in.
From Wednesday the 26th right through to the end of August, it's just poor. Tiny waves, weak energy, and the wind isn't playing ball. There's a stretch from the 26th to the 30th where it's basically flat, with no swell to speak of. A real blank run for the area.
Now, hold on to your board, because Friday morning the 28th of August looks like a proper standout. The swell jumps to a solid 10ft from the NW with an 11-second period, and the combined energy is pumping at a massive 2116 – that's strong. The wind is a gentle cross-on from the NNW, and the notes say the conditions are favorable, but the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. That kind of size at Foz is for experts only, and even then it's going to be heavy. The afternoon drops to 8ft, still sizeable but the wind picks up.
After that, it's back to the doldrums. The 29th and 30th of August are flat, with just tiny dribbles. The first week of September sees a few pulses of small swell, but nothing over 5ft, and the wind is mostly cross-shore, keeping things messy and weak. The energy is mostly in the double digits (78, 93, 76) – just not enough to get excited about.
The only other blip on the radar is Monday the 7th of September afternoon. The swell bumps up to 6ft from the NW with a 10-second period and the wind is light and onshore. The energy hits 681, which is moderate, but the onshore wind will likely keep it lumpy. It’s something to watch if the forecasts tighten up, but for now, it's a distant maybe.
So, the bottom line: if you're an expert looking for a big-wave challenge, Friday the 28th of August morning is your only real shot. For everyone else, it's a long, quiet spell with not much to offer.
Rusty.
