The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s coming up for our little stretch of coast.
Alright, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough one. The next 16 days are looking pretty grim for any decent surf. We're staring down a long, flat spell starting right now, and it doesn't really let up. There's a massive gap of days with nothing worth paddling out for, all the way through to the end of the month.
Fort Pierce North Jetty is the only spot in the game, and it's serving up tiny, weak windswell at best. The water temp is sitting at 86°, which is about 2° warmer than usual for this time of year – a bit of a lukewarm bath, but nothing shocking.
The first real chance of anything even *close* to rideable doesn't show up until Tuesday, July 28th, in the afternoon. We're looking at a tiny 2 ft swell from the East, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is a paltry 42 (moderate energy). The saving grace is a clean, offshore wind from the West at 6 mph. It'll be clean, but the size is just so small. It's more of a "check it if you're desperate" kind of session.
Before that, from now until that Tuesday, every single day is a write-off. Tiny swells, cross-shore winds, and the wave comment is "poor surf conditions" across the board. There's a brief moment on Saturday, July 26th, in the afternoon where the wind goes glassy, but the swell is only 1 ft. It'll be a mirror-flat ocean, not a wave.
After that brief clean window on the 28th, it's right back to the same small, weak stuff through the first few days of August. The swell drops to 0.7 ft and 0.3 ft with a period of 11 seconds, which is a longer period but with no height to speak of – just a big, slow, useless groundswell.
Honestly, this is a perfect time to get the gear ready, check the ding repair, or take up kite surfing if the wind picks up. On the bright side, this area tends not to stay this flat for too long, and forecasts can change. Keep an eye on it, but don't hold your breath.
Rusty.
