The Lowdown
Hey, Rusty here. Look, I gotta be straight with you – the next two weeks at Fort Pierce North Jetty are looking grim. There's basically nothing worth paddling out for. This spot is usually super consistent, being a beach, reef and jetty setup exposed to the open ocean, but we're stuck in a flat spell with tiny, weak, short-period slop. The water temp is a balmy 86°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that's about the only good thing.
From Thursday July 16 right through to the end of the month on July 31, the surf is basically nonexistent. The swell barely reaches 2 ft on its best days, and the period is mostly under 8 seconds – that's just wind chop, not real waves. The combined energy stays in the weak range (mostly single-digit to low two-digit values in brackets), except for a brief spike to moderate energy (120) on Saturday July 25 afternoon, but that comes with a cross-onshore wind and choppy conditions. Even the cleanest mornings (like Thursday July 23 with glassy conditions) only offer 2 ft of messy SE swell. There's one morning on July 25 where the data says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions" – that's a 2 ft E swell with light offshore wind, but honestly, it's not worth the drive. The optimum swell direction here is NE, but we're getting E, SE, SSE, and ESE – all wrong.
So what are we looking at? Zero standouts. The entire 16-day window is a write-off. If you're desperate, the glassy afternoon on July 23 might give you a few knee-high dribblers, but that's stretching it. For anything with even a hint of power, you'd need to wait for a proper groundswell from the northeast, and there's no sign of that. This is just one of those stretches where the ocean goes to sleep. Remember, forecasts change, but for now, keep the board in the car and save the wax.
Rusty.
