The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s look at the stretch ahead.
Honestly, mate, it’s a pretty grim run for Fish Pass Jetty. The whole 16-day window is basically a flat spell with onshore muck. We’re talking tiny, weak, short-period windswell the whole way through, and the wind is almost always blowing from the wrong direction – either onshore or cross-onshore. There’s no real recommendation here, no standout sessions. The combined swell energy barely gets into double digits, often sitting around the 20s and 30s, which is a sure sign of zero power. The water temp is running about average for this time of year at 84.9°.
The first week is a write-off. From August 18th right through to the end of the month, you’re looking at 1.6ft to 2.6ft of weak, choppy sea. The period is a gutless 4 to 5 seconds, and the wind is either a Moderate or Fresh breeze straight onshore from the SSE or SE. Thursday the 20th has a clearer sky but the wind is still on, making it messy. The only tiny glimmer of hope is the morning of August 28th, where it goes glassy with barely a breath of wind, but the swell is gone – just 1ft from the SSE with a period of 4 seconds. It’ll be pretty as a millpond, but there’s nothing to ride.
The second week is more of the same. From August 30th through to September 2nd, it’s a repeating loop of 2ft to 2.6ft of onshore slop. The wind actually picks up into a Fresh breeze on September 1st and 2nd, making it even worse. For a beach/jetty setup like this, the lack of any decent swell direction from the optimum SE is hurting us hard.
If you’re absolutely desperate for a paddle, the glassy morning of the 28th might give you a few ankle-biters, but honestly, with this strength of swell, you’re better off doing something else. This is a flat spell, plain and simple. It won’t stay this poor forever, but for now, the ocean has nothing to offer.
