The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m gonna level with you – this stretch for Fish Pass Jetty is a tough one. We’re looking at a 16-day window that starts with a bit of nothing and doesn’t really offer a single standout session. The whole forecast is a run of poor surf conditions, so there’s no real “best on offer” to get excited about. The whole 16 days is a blank run for decent waves.

The water’s sitting at 84° which is about average for this time of year. Nothing to note there.

Starting on Tuesday the 28th of July, we’ve got a tiny SSE swell around 3 ft, but with a short period of just 5 seconds, it’s got no push. Combine that with a solid 15-18 mph SSE wind blowing cross-on and onshore, it’s nothing but choppy, messy junk. The combined energy is weak (45). That sets the tone.

Wednesday the 29th, Thursday the 30th, and Friday the 31st are all much of the same. A little waist-high swell, 2 ft to 3 ft, but still coming from the SSE/SE with a short 5-6 second period. Winds stay moderate to fresh from the S or SSE, mostly onshore or cross-onshore. The combined energy dribbles from 63 down to 17. Don’t bother.

Saturday the 1st of August and Sunday the 2nd aren’t any better. On Sunday morning, there’s a moment of glassy conditions with a light W wind, and the swell is still just 3 ft from the SSE. It’s glassy, but the swell is too weak and short-period (6 seconds) to shape up. Combined energy is only 41. It’s a tease.

From Monday the 3rd right through to Wednesday the 12th of August, it’s the same story. Swell hovers around 2 ft to 3 ft, always from the SSE or SE, with periods stuck at 5-7 seconds. Winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore from S, SSE, or SE at 9-18 mph. The combined energy never gets above 75. It’s consistently poor.

For a beach/jetty setup, this is normal for the area when there’s no groundswell in the water. The whole 16-day window is a washout. Nothing to recommend, just a long gap of flat, choppy conditions. Keep the board stored.

Rusty.
