The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break down what’s coming for the next couple of weeks.
Fairy Bower is a point break that needs a specific swell direction to really work, and we’ve got a bit of a mixed bag. The water temp is 63°F, which is about normal for this time of year.
We start off a bit slow. Saturday morning, the 18th of July, has some swell, but it’s weak – the combined energy is only 218 (weak), and the period is a short 6 seconds, so it’s going to be fat and messy. The wind is a cross-offshore, but it’s just not enough. Not the best way to kick off.
Sunday morning, the 19th, is a big jump. The swell is 7ft from the ENE with a long 11-second period, and the combined energy is a solid 1314 (strong). That’s a lot of water, but there’s a cross-shore breeze. This is one for the experienced crew; 7ft on a point can be a handful.
The real standout is Monday morning, the 20th. The swell is a solid 6ft from the ENE, long period at 11 seconds, and the combined energy is 885 (moderate-to-strong). Best of all, we’ve got a light WNW cross-offshore breeze, which should keep the faces clean. This is a proper window.
Things get a bit tricky after that. There’s a gap of a few days with only marginal or poor conditions until the 24th. Thursday morning, the 23rd, has a big 10ft southerly swell, but the wind is a fresh 30 km/h cross-offshore, and the energy is 1522 (very strong). That’s a big, powerful ocean – only for the experts.
Friday morning, the 24th, is a better bet. The swell drops to 7ft from the south, 10-second period, 941 energy (strong), and a light WSW cross-offshore breeze. That should be a solid, clean day.
The second week has a couple of interesting calls. Saturday morning, the 1st of August, has a promising 6ft from the ESE with a gentle offshore breeze, but the period is a short 5 seconds, so it might be a bit lumpy. The real long-range standout is Saturday afternoon, the 1st of August. We’ve got a 10ft swell from the east, 8-second period, with a combined energy of 1149 (strong) and a gentle cross-offshore breeze. That’s a big, clean swell, but it’s a long way out – promising, but less certain.
If I had to pick the best of the best, I’d be looking at Monday morning, the 20th, and maybe Friday morning, the 24th, for the first week. For the second week, keep an eye on Saturday, the 1st of August, but don’t plan your whole week around it.
