The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Emerald Beach.
Right off the bat, we're looking at a bit of a flat spell for the first couple of days. Wednesday and Thursday are pretty much a write-off with tiny, weak waves and not much to get excited about. Hold tight, because the waiting game pays off.
Friday the 17th sees a bit of a pulse, with a 7.2ft swell from the SE, but the period is a short 7 seconds, so it'll be a bit lumpy and messy. The energy is moderate (508), but the surf quality is marginal due to the wind and tide. Not the best, but a sign of things to come.
Now, the real story starts on Saturday the 18th. We've got a serious pulse of energy hitting the coast. The swell is 9.8ft from the SE with an 8-second period, but the combined energy is a massive 1256. The problem is, the wave comment says it's too big for this break. This is a big, powerful swell that's going to be a handful. Sunday the 19th gets even bigger, with 13.1ft swells and energy readings over 3000 – that's extreme. For the experienced crew, the early morning of Saturday and Sunday could be a wild ride, but it's not for the faint of heart.
The standout window, and I mean the real diamond, is from Monday the 20th through to Thursday the 23rd. Monday afternoon sees the swell drop to a more manageable 8.2ft from the E, with a solid 10-second period and excellent conditions for experienced surfers. The energy is still strong (1384). But the real magic is Tuesday the 21st through Wednesday the 22nd. Tuesday morning brings a 6.9ft E swell, clean offshore SSW wind at 10 km/h, and the wave comment says "expect very good surf conditions." Then Wednesday morning the 22nd is completely glassy – wind from the N at 5 km/h, with a 5.9ft E swell. That's as clean as it gets. The water is sitting at 68°, which is about average for this time of year.
Thursday the 23rd is another cracker, with a 7.5ft E swell and a long 12-second period, glassy conditions again in the morning. This is proper groundswell energy (1469) and the wave comment says "excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers." The long period will make the waves shape up beautifully, but it'll create longer lulls between sets.
After that, the swell slowly winds down, staying clean and surfable through the end of the month with smaller, glassy mornings. The best bet is to be ready for that Tuesday to Thursday window – it's the pick of the litter.
Short Range ForecastModerate rain (total 12mm), heaviest on Wed night. Very mild (max 18°C on Thu morning, min 14°C on Wed morning).
