The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' for our one and only spot over the next couple of weeks.
We're lookin' at a pretty quiet stretch ahead to be honest. For the most part, it's a whole lot of small, junky swell with the wind mostly blowin' the wrong way. There's a bit of a gap right at the start, with nothing worth paddling out for until Saturday morning. After that, we get into a run of pretty ordinary conditions for most of the week that follows.
The Full Picture:
The forecast kicks off on Wednesday the 19th, but honestly, Thursday morning the 20th might offer the biggest bump in size, with a 5ft east swell at 7 seconds, but it's got cross-on wind from the NNW at just 3 mph – not great but not a total write-off either. The real trouble starts Thursday afternoon when the wind cranks onshore, and then for pretty much all of Friday, it's a write-off with messy, blown-out conditions.
Your first real chance for a surf comes Saturday morning the 22nd. We've got a tiny 3ft swell from the NE, but the wind goes glassy from the SW at 3 mph. That's the "clean air" we all want, and the wave comment backs it up – glassy conditions. The crowd factor at Emerald Beach is often there, so expect some company, but on something this small, it's a fun, soulful morning. The combined wave energy is a weak 91, so don't expect the Atlantic.
Sunday the 23rd stays very small (2ft) but picks up some clean, offshore wind from the SSW that'll groom what's there. Monday the 24th goes downhill again with building onshore winds.
Looking into the second week, the pattern doesn't really improve. We get another flash of promise on Thursday morning the 27th with a clean, moderate offshore wind from the SSW and a 3ft east-northeast swell (139 energy), making for some clean lines, but it's still a small wave.
After that, the end of August and into early September just looks like a drawn-out run of tiny, choppy, or onshore junk. There's a solid 8 to 10 day period there from the 25th onward where the reports are consistently "poor surf conditions." The swell periods do stretch out to 11 seconds by the 2nd of September, which is a longer period, but combined with cross-onshore winds and a swell height of only 2ft, it's not doing us any favours.
The Standout Call:
There isn't a true "standout" in this batch, but if I had to pick the best window, it's Saturday morning, August 22nd. It's not going to be big, but the glassy wind will make that 3ft Northeast swell look way better than it is. It's the cleanest, most user-friendly window for an intermediate surfer on a point break like Emerald Beach. After that, the cleanest morning is probably Thursday, August 27th with the offshore wind, but the swell is still tiny.
The water temp is at 68°F, which is about a degree cooler than average for this time of year – nothing to stress about, just standard autumn conditions.
Rusty.
