Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's coming up for Emerald Beach.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – there's a bit of a lull to start. The first few days are on the smaller side. The water temp is sitting right around normal for this time of year at 68°, nothing out of the ordinary there.
Friday the 3rd, there’s some small NE swell moving in, about 4ft. The wind is a bit of a hassle, so the morning looks pretty ordinary. We see a short period around 7 seconds, so it’s weak and a bit wonky. The combined swell energy is a weak 136. Afternoon cleans up a touch with a light cross-off, but it’s still not much to write home about. Saturday the 4th, the swell drops off to 2ft, but it does swing to the east with a proper long-period groundswell of 13 seconds. The combined energy is still weak at 117, but with a clean SSW offshore in the morning, it’ll be glassy and nice for a small-wave longboard session. That 13-second period means the sets will be fat and well-spaced, which is nice for paddling out, but at this size, don’t expect any power.
The rest of the first week and into the second is pretty flat, honestly. The swell just fades out. There are a few 1.0ft to 2ft pulses, but they're barely registering. There’s a long stretch from the 6th through the 12th where the conditions are clean but the energy is just not there. You'll see values like 55, 52, 20 – very weak combined energy. Sunday the 12th morning looks glassy with a 2ft SE swell, but again, it’s a struggle for a proper wave.
Now, for the one interesting bit in the long-range. Around Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th, we get a pulse of windswell from the north, pushing up to 3ft. The catch is, the wind is onshore and cross-onshore, so it’s going to be messy and choppy, not the clean lines we want. It shows combined energy in the weak 77 to 79 range. This setup looks more like fun for the kite surfers than paddle surfers, to be honest.
The end of the window, around Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th, shows a strong offshore wind from the SSW, but the swell is gone – just 0.7ft with fresh breezes. There's a long-period 16-second pulse on the 17th, but at that tiny size, it’s hardly surfable.
So, what's the best of it? Honestly, it’s a lean period. The standout, and I mean the only real session worth setting an alarm for, is Saturday morning, July the 4th. It’s a small, clean day. The swell is 2ft from the east, with a period of 13 seconds. The wind is light offshore from the SSW, so the face will be smooth. It’s not powerful, but for a mellow glide on a log, that’s your window. The break can get crowded, so expect some company if you paddle out.
For the rest of the 16 days, you’re mostly looking at a long gap of poor to flat conditions. Keep the board waxed, but don't get your hopes up for anything punchy.
Rusty.
