The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, but now in feet and miles. Let’s break down Cassino.
Monday morning 17 August starts with a tease. Clean 4ft easterly swell rolls in with combined energy at 212 (moderate). Glassy conditions – winds nearly calm out of the WNW. That’s sweet for a beginner spot like this beach/jetty. But by afternoon the wind swings onshore from the east and it’s game over.
Tuesday 18 August is a mess – morning is ordinary, afternoon is worse with cross-shore winds. Wednesday and Thursday are total losses – cross-onshore breezes, short weak swell, energy dropping to almost nothing (98) by Thursday morning.
From Thursday afternoon all the way to Friday 28 August, it’s a dry spell. Some afternoons are clean, but the swell is tiny or poorly shaped. Saturday 22 August shows a bump to 4ft from the SSE with moderate energy (252), but it’s marginal at best.
Sunday 23 August morning is the first real bright spot. A clean 5ft southerly groundswell with 11-second period. Offshore WSW winds at 15 mph. Combined energy hits 598 (moderate to strong). Still only rated marginal, but it’s the cleanest pulse in the first ten days. Keep in mind this is a beach setup – that longer period can make waves a little fat and straight.
Monday 24 August keeps the energy up: 5ft SSE swell, 12-second period, energy 636, clean morning. Again marginal, but for experienced surfers it’s worth a look. Beginners should sit this one out – over 5ft is too much.
Then Friday 28 August morning is the real standout of the whole outlook. Swell hits 6ft from the ESE – short period at 7 seconds, but combined energy is 358 (moderate). Light SSW winds at 9 mph, cross-off, keep the surface glassy. Forecast calls it “expect good surf conditions.” This is the one to save for, but it’s over a week away, so watch the updates.
Saturday 29 August and Sunday 30 August slide back into onshore junk. Monday 31 August brings another pulse: 5ft SSE, 12-second period, energy 671 (strong), but cross-shore winds mess up the surface.
Finally, Tuesday 1 September morning closes on a high note: 4ft ESE swell, 11-second period, energy 450 (moderate). Offshore WNW winds at just 6 mph. Clean, glassy. A solid way to finish.
The standout is Friday 28 August morning. Tuesday 1 September morning is the backup. For kite fans, those afternoons with 15-20 mph cross-onshore winds and lumpy seas might be more fun than paddling.
First week is lean – small swell, weak energy, onshore winds. Second week picks up with a couple of clean, solid mornings. Keep the wax handy for the end of August and that first day of September.
Rusty.
