The Lowdown

Alright, grab your board. Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s heading our way at La Derecha del Barco. It’s a point break, so it can handle a bit of size when the direction is right, and it’s consistent. The water’s sitting about average for this time of year, nothing wild.

The first week is a bit of a mixed bag, but the standout is hands down the Saturday morning session on the 8th of August. We’ve got a clean 5ft swell rolling in from the SSE, with a solid 11-second period behind it. That’s a proper groundswell. The wind is light offshore from the NW, which will have the waves looking like glass. The combined energy is moderate at 441, so there’s enough push to get a good ride. This is the pick of the whole forecast. Expect good surf conditions, and it’s a point break, so those long-period lines should wrap in nicely. Crowds are possible, so get in early.

Before that, Friday the 7th is a write-off for paddling. Strong winds from the SW are whipping up a messy 12ft swell, with a combined energy reading of 2447. That’s a lot of power, but the wind is cross, making it look like a washing machine. Even the afternoon session, though cleaner, is pushing 10ft swell with a strong cross-offshore breeze. The swell is over 8ft, so this is expert-only territory, and honestly, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

The back half of the window is a bit of a drought. There’s nothing really firing until the 21st of August. That Friday morning finally shows some promise. We’re looking at a clean 5ft swell from the ENE, with a light offshore wind from the WSW. The period is a short 8 seconds, so it’s a bit weaker, but the combined energy is 270 and the conditions are clean. Expect good surf conditions. It’s a long way out, so treat it as a promising but less certain call.

The rest of the second week is mostly small, messy, or blown out. The 18th of August has a small 4ft SSE swell with clean, cross-offshore wind, but it’s only marginal. The 20th of August afternoon has a bigger 5ft swell from the ENE, but the period is a weak 6 seconds, and it’s rated as poor.

So, to sum it up: don’t hold your breath for the first few days. The window is mostly a gap until Saturday the 8th. That’s your best bet, and it’s a good one. After that, there’s a long gap until the 21st of August for a quieter session. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but for now, circle the 8th.

Rusty.
