The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. We’ve got a sixteen-day window for Cigana, and to be honest, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The water’s a touch cooler than we’re used to for this time of year, sitting at 62°, which is a bit colder than normal. The start is a bit slow, but there are a couple of windows that could offer some fun.

The first few days are pretty quiet. Sunday morning (July 19th) we’ve got tiny 1ft south swell with a 13-second period, but the NNE wind is cross-off, so it’s clean. The energy is weak at 31, so it’s not really worth paddling out for. This trend continues into Monday and Tuesday with very small, poor surf.

Things start to look a bit more interesting on Tuesday afternoon (July 21st). We’ve got a 3ft SSW swell, the wind drops to glassy, and the energy picks up to a moderate 110. It’s just surfable, but nothing to write home about. Wednesday remains small but clean.

The standout period for the first week is shaping up for Friday, July 24th. The morning is a bit lumpy with a 6ft SE swell, but the afternoon is where it’s at. The wind goes glassy, the swell pushes to 6ft from the SE with a 9-second period, and the energy is strong at 566. This is as good as it gets right now – expect very good surf conditions. The crowd factor is listed as "sometimes," so you might have a few others out, but it should be worth it.

Saturday morning (July 25th) still has a decent 3ft south swell with a very long 12-second period. The wind is glassy, and the energy is still strong at 333. This is a solid, clean option. Sunday (July 26th) morning also offers clean 3ft south swell, but the wind picks up in the afternoon, messing it up.

After that, we hit a major lull. From Sunday afternoon through to the end of the month, the surf is consistently poor with small, weak swells and onshore or strong cross-off winds. The energy drops to pitiful levels, mostly under 100. It’s a real quiet patch.

Now, looking ahead to the second week, there’s something promising but less certain. On Thursday, July 30th, the morning shows a big spike in energy to 2429 with an 8ft south swell. The wind is light cross-on, but the period is a short 10 seconds. This is a big, powerful swell, but it’s only for experts; that size with a short period and cross-on wind will be a beast. It’s marginal. The real highlight of the second week could be Friday, July 31st. The morning has a clean 4ft south swell, a very long 12-second period, and a light cross-off wind. The energy is strong at 624, and the forecast is for very good surf conditions. This is your best bet for the tail end of the forecast. The long period groundswell will love the point setup at Cigana, but be aware it can make beach breaks a bit too straight.

After that, the forecast drops off again into poor conditions for the start of August. So, to sum it up: the best windows are Friday afternoon the 24th, Saturday morning the 25th, and that promising Friday morning on the 31st. Keep an eye on that last one.

Rusty.
