The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – this 16-day outlook for Campo di Mare is a real struggle. We’re looking at a long dry spell with barely a ripple for the first week and a half. The good news is that it’s not a total washout, but you’ll be waiting a while.

The whole stretch from now through to the 15th of August is pretty much flat. Tiny waves, barely a pulse, with the combined swell energy sitting mostly in single digits (1 to 13). The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there. You’ll get some glassy mornings, like the 6th and 7th, but there’s nothing to ride. It’s a blank run that’s fairly normal for this area when the swell windows close up.

The first real sign of life comes on the morning of Sunday the 16th of August. We get a small bump from the WSW at 3ft, 5-second period, with a combined energy of 62 (moderate). The wind is glassy – a light breeze from the ENE, so it’ll be clean. It’s surfable, but ordinary. The waves are small and weak, but if you’re desperate, you could go for a paddle. The afternoon gets choppy again with a cross-onshore, so that’s it.

The morning of Monday the 17th of August is a bit better, with a similar 2ft from the WSW, 6-second period, and glassy conditions. Still small, but worth a mention.

Then the morning of Wednesday the 19th of August sees a little more juice, with 3ft from the S, 6-second period, and a clean cross-offshore breeze. Combined energy is 61 – moderate. It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about.

The standout window, and the only real highlight, is the morning of Thursday the 20th of August. That’s the one. The swell jumps to 6ft from the WSW, with a 7-second period, and the combined energy hits 374 (strong). The wind is light and cross-off from the ESE, keeping it clean. That’s the best on offer by a long shot. At 6ft, it’s getting a bit too big for beginners, but for anyone with a bit of experience, it’ll be good fun. The period is short, so it’ll be a bit crumbly, but the size and clean conditions make it the pick of the whole 16 days.

Other than that, it’s a waiting game. If you’re into kite surfing, some of the breezy afternoons with onshore wind and small, messy waves could be more interesting than paddling.

Rusty.
