The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with ya – the surf outlook for this stretch is a real bummer. We’re looking at a long, flat run with barely a ripple to get excited about. The only spot on the cards is Serapo (Gaeta), and it’s not offering anything worthwhile for the next 16 days.

Right now, and for the next week, it’s a total write-off. Thursday the 6th of August starts with a tiny 1 ft SW swell, but with a short period of 5 seconds and weak energy (6), it’s just not gonna break properly. The water is a warm 85°F and much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s the only highlight. The combo of tiny swell and a cross-on afternoon wind means it’s just messy. Friday the 7th through Monday the 10th are even worse, with swell dropping to 0.3 ft or 0.7 ft and virtually no energy. The mornings are glassy, but there’s simply nothing to ride.

We then hit a gap from the afternoon of the 13th of August through to the morning of the 14th where there’s zero swell. A tiny 0.7 ft W swell tries to show up on the 15th, but it’s useless. The whole first week and a half is a washout, and this spot is inconsistent by nature, so a blank run like this isn’t unusual for the area.

The only real flicker of hope comes on the morning of Sunday the 16th of August. We get a 1 ft WNW swell with a 4-second period. The energy is still low (8), and it’s not enough to call it surfable. The morning is glassy, but the wave size is just too small.

After that, it’s more of the same. The 17th and 18th offer tiny 0.7 ft swells, and the 19th of August morning sees a clean offshore wind from the NNE with a 1.0 ft WNW swell, but the period is 3 seconds and the energy is only 2. It’s still a complete non-event. By the 20th and 21st, the swell disappears entirely again.

There’s not a single standout in this outlook. The swell is too small (< 2 ft), the period is too short, and the energy is weak. For a beginner, the tiny swell is safe, but there’s nothing to ride. For anyone else, it’s a complete flat spell. Save your energy and wait for the next system.

Rusty.
