The Lowdown

Right then, let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Ibiza – Cala Nova over the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you, mate – it’s a lean stretch. There’s barely a whisper of proper swell and the wind windows are mostly rubbish. You won’t be missing much if you leave the boards in the van for a while.

Alright, starting off on Friday the 21st of August. We’ve got a tiny 3ft swell coming from the SSW, but the period is a short 5 seconds – that’s windswill, not real groundswell. The water is way warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 85°F (a massive 6°F above average), so you’d be in a wetsuitless bath, but the waves just aren’t there. The combined energy is weak at 56, and the WSW wind is cross-off, but it’s just too small and weak to bother with. The afternoon improves a little with a glassy NW offshore breeze, but the swell drops to 2ft – still nothing doing.

Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are a write-off. Onshore E winds, tiny 2-3ft swell, and that combined energy barely scrapes 36. It’s choppy and messy.

Monday the 24th is more of the same – small, cross-shore wind, and a risk of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Not your day.

Tuesday the 25th of August is the closest we get to a window. The morning shows a 4ft ESE swell with a 7-second period and a light NNW offshore breeze. The combined energy bumps up to 142, which is moderate, and those conditions are clean. It’s still only a 1 out of 10 on the quality front, though – the waves are surfable but very ordinary. By the afternoon it goes glassy with a 3ft ESE swell, but again, it’s just not packing any real punch.

From Wednesday the 26th right through to Monday the 31st of August, it’s a dead zone. Swell heights hover between 0.3ft and 3ft, the periods are short, and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-shore. The combined energy is mostly in the single digits or low tens – that’s nothing. There’s a brief window on Friday the 28th morning with a glassy WSW wind and a tiny 1ft SW swell, but you’d be scratching for a ripple.

The first week of September doesn’t bring much hope. The 3rd of September shows a promising 3ft ENE swell with a glassy WNW wind in the morning, and that combined energy is 48. It’s clean, but the period is only 5 seconds – it’s going to be weak and crumbly. The afternoon of the 3rd and the morning of the 4th offer a bit more size (4ft) with clean cross-off winds, but still short-period and weak energy (63-75). It’s not really worth paddling out for unless you’re desperate for a splash.

By the 5th of September, we see that energy spike to 115 with a 3ft E swell, but the wind swings fresh onshore from the east at 22 mph, turning it lumpy and ugly. That’s more of a kitesurfer’s playground than a surfer’s.

So, the best on offer across this entire 16-day stretch is the morning of Tuesday the 25th of August. It’s the only time we get a bit of energy (142), a clean offshore breeze, and the biggest swell of the period at 4ft. But don’t get excited – it’s still a poor quality wave, short-period, and very ordinary. If you absolutely have to get wet, that’s your window. Everything else is flat or blown out.

There’s a long gap of rubbish from the 26th of August right through to the 4th of September, with only a couple of forgettable, weak, clean days. The forecasts can always change, but for now, I’d leave the boards in the shed.

Rusty.
