The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the next couple of weeks around here are looking pretty flat, so don’t get your hopes up too high.
We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak surf ahead. The only real window of opportunity kicks off on Friday, 25th July, but even then it’s not exactly gonna be a classic. For the first week, from now through Thursday, 24th July, the swell is barely a ripple. The combined energy is in the single digits, often just 1 to 3 (weak energy), so you’re looking at waves around 0.7 ft to 1 ft for days. The water is about 82°F with a temperature anomaly of 6°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s a weird one, but the ocean is still flat.
The first real sign of life comes Friday morning, 25th July, at Cala-Nova (Ibiza - Cala Nova). We get a tiny 2 ft swell from the SE with a period of 5 seconds. It’s glassy that morning, with a light S wind of 3 mph, so the surface will be clean. The combined energy is 18 (weak energy). It’s a beginner wave at best, and the swell direction is SE, which is not the optimum for this exposed beach-and-reef setup (they want SE and it’s coming from SE, so that’s a match). But with the light wind, it’s worth a splash for anyone learning. The afternoon gets a bit messier with onshore wind.
The standout for the whole period, if you can call it that, is Saturday, 26th July. The morning sees 2 ft from the SE, period 4 seconds, and the combined energy is 16 (weak energy). Winds are light onshore at 6 mph, so it’s not clean, but it’s the most consistent couple of days we’ve got.
Then Sunday, 27th July, morning is similar – 2 ft from the ESE, period 4 seconds, energy 11 (weak energy), with light onshore wind. It’s a bit of a gamble, but the only real surf on offer.
The 31st July and 1st August show a tiny bump. On Friday, 31st July, we get 3 ft from the ENE with a period of 4 seconds, energy 34 (weak energy). The wind is cross-onshore at 9 mph, so it’s choppy. By Saturday, 1st August, the swell is 3 ft from the ESE, period 6 seconds, energy 56 (weak energy). Winds are cross-shore at 6-9 mph, so it’s average at best.
Honestly, for the whole 16 days, there’s nothing that’s a true standout. The best bet is the morning of 25th July for the glassy clean conditions, but the surf is tiny. If you’re a beginner, pop down to Cala-Nova for a go on a longboard. For everyone else, it’s a flat spell. The forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a write-off. Keep an eye on the charts, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
