The Lowdown
Alright, let me have a look at what’s shaping up for us.
Right off the bat, I’ve gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is looking pretty flat and messy for Armacao. The water is sitting at 60°F, which is a full 6°F colder than normal for this time of year, so that’s a pretty unusual chill. The wind is mostly a cross-onshore blow from the north, and the swell is either tiny or coming in with a short, weak period. We’ve got a few days where the combined energy is just 42, which is barely a ripple. Honestly, it’s not worth paddling out for most of this.
The first real glimmer of hope shows up on Monday, July 20th. The wind swings around to a light SSE cross-off, and the conditions clean up nicely. You’ll see some small 3ft to 4ft wind swell from the ENE, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is still pretty low (176), but the surf is actually rideable and the wave faces will be clean. It’s nothing to write home about size-wise, but for a stretch that’s been mostly dud, it’s the best we’ve got.
Then we get a pulse of northeast swell from Friday, July 17th through Sunday, July 19th. Swell heights jump to 6ft, and the combined energy hits 416, which is a decent kick. But here’s the catch – the wind is still onshore from the north, making it choppy and lumpy. For a spot that’s fairly exposed to the NE, the waves will have some push, but it’s going to be a battle. This is more of a kite-surfing setup than a clean paddle session.
After that, from Tuesday, July 22nd onwards, it goes flat again for days. The swell completely drops out, and we’re looking at glassy mornings with no surf. The 23rd and 24th are dead calm, then a few tiny 2ft waves show up on the 25th, but with light rain and cross-shore wind, it’s not worth the effort.
The very end of the outlook, on Wednesday, July 29th and Thursday, July 30th, tries to kick up a little 1ft to 3ft swell from the north and northeast, but the periods are short (2 to 5 seconds) and the energy is negligible. Clean conditions, yes, but you’ll be waiting for a wave that barely stands up.
So, bottom line: if you’re desperate for a paddle, aim for Monday, July 20th – it’s the only day where the conditions actually line up for a surf. The rest of the window is either blown out or flat. It’s a tough run, but that’s how it goes sometimes.
