The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this outlook for Areia Preta is a tough one. We’ve got a 16-day window, but for the first week, the surf just isn’t happening. The whole period is plagued by a persistent cross-onshore wind from the SE, blowing at 12 mph, keeping the ocean choppy and messy. The first real chance of anything rollin’ in is a week away, on August 1st, but that’s still rated as poor surf.
The water temp is sitting at 80°F, which is just about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The standout, and really the only blip of interest, happens on Tuesday, August 4th. We see a pulse of swell from the ESE at 6 ft, with a period of 8 seconds, and the wind briefly swings to an onshore direction, which is a change from the constant cross-on. The combined energy hits a strong 558 (moderate wave energy). Even then, the call is still “poor surf conditions,” so don’t expect perfection. After that, it’s back to the same old cross-on chop for the rest of the fortnight.
Honestly, for the whole 16 days, there’s not a single day I’d paddle out for. The setup with the consistent cross-on wind and moderate swell suggests this stretch might be more interesting for the kite surfers than anyone looking for a clean wave. It’s a blank run, and in this area, with the swell direction and wind patterns, that’s a pretty normal outcome.
Rusty.
