The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m staring at the charts for Abras. To be straight with you, it’s a rough stretch ahead. We’ve got a solid 16-day window here, but honestly, there’s not a single session that’s worth paddling out for. The whole forecast is a blank run of poor surf conditions, and for a spot like this, that’s just how it goes sometimes.
The wave energy is all over the place, hitting moderate to strong levels, with readings like 258 (moderate) up to 433 (moderate) on the 21st of August, but it’s completely wasted. The swell is coming from the southeast and east-southeast, but Abras is sheltered and really needs it from the northeast. So we’re getting a constant 5 ft to 6 ft of windswell with a short, choppy period of just 6 to 9 seconds – no power, no shape.
And the wind? It’s a killer. From Tuesday morning the 18th of August right through to the end, it’s howling onshore or cross-onshore from the SE and ESE at 16 mph to 22 mph. That’s a fresh breeze, and it’s smashing any chance of a clean face. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there, but you won’t care about that when you’re getting blown off your board.
The only notable bump in energy comes around the 21st of August (Friday morning, 433 energy), but the period is still short at 9 seconds, and the wind is straight onshore. On the 29th and 30th of August, we see a little more size, hitting 6 ft, but again, onshore wind and poor conditions. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, to be honest.
With the wind being so relentless, it’s a no-go for the whole 16 days. The forecast can change, and it tends not to stay this poor for long, but for now, save your energy.
Rusty.
