The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be real about the situation at Abras. Looking at the whole 16-day window, I gotta say it’s a pretty grim run. The forecast is chock-full of "poor surf conditions" all the way through, with no standout days to get excited about. The wind is nearly always onshore or cross-onshore, and the wave energy is mostly moderate, with values sitting between 110 and 702, but it's never clean enough to make the most of it. There’s a big gap of nothing but messy, choppy surf.
Right now, starting Sunday morning, July 19th, we’ve got a 7ft swell coming from the SE with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is moderate at 702, but it’s completely blown out by a 19 mph onshore easterly wind. It’s a poor surf conditions call, and honestly, it looks more like a kite-surfing setup than a paddle session. The water temp is about average for the time of year here.
This grim pattern just keeps rolling. Through Monday and Tuesday, the swell drops a bit, but the wind stays onshore. The energy dips into the 180 to 620 range. By Wednesday the 22nd, we’re still looking at 7ft SE swell, but again, it’s messy. The wind finally eases up a little by the end of the first week, but the swell drops right down with it, and we’re into cross-onshore winds and choppy conditions from Sunday the 26th onwards.
The second week is a write-off. From July 28th through to August 3rd, the swell is tiny, mostly under 4ft, with periods as low as 5 seconds. The energy drops to two-digit numbers, as low as 62. The wind is still onshore or cross-onshore. There’s simply nothing worth paddling out for. The forecast confidence is low for that far out anyway, but it doesn’t look promising.
In short, Abras is a total washout for this whole 16-day stretch. The wind is the enemy, and the swell never gets a chance to clean up. It’s a tough one, but that’s how it goes sometimes. Keep an eye on the charts, things can change, but right now, there’s no surf to be had.
Rusty.
