The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Abras over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, I gotta be honest with you – this outlook is a tough one. We’re looking at a solid 16-day window with absolutely no surf worth paddling out for. The first record we’ve got shows Wednesday afternoon, July 15th, with a tiny 3 ft swell from the ESE and a short period of 7 seconds, but the wind is howling onshore at 16 mph, and the combined energy is a weak 93. It’s all poor surf conditions from there. The whole first week is a write-off: onshore winds, mostly from the E or ESE, blowing between 16 and 22 mph, and the swell never gets its act together. Sure, the wave height bumps up to around 6 ft by Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st, and the combined energy reaches 540 (moderate), but the wind is still onshore and the period is short, around 8-9 seconds. It’s just messy, choppy, and no good for a proper paddle.
Moving into the second week, it’s more of the same story. Thursday the 24th shows a little shift with a cross-onshore wind and a 5 ft swell, but it’s still choppy. The rest of the week and into the end of the month sees the swell dropping back below 4 ft, the energy falls off to weak figures (down to 39 by the 29th), and the wind stays onshore. There’s no standout, no hidden gem, no window of clean glassy conditions. For a reef break like Abras, the optimum swell direction is NE, but we’re getting nothing but ESE and SE swells – all wrong.
If you’re a beginner, don’t even think about it. The swell never gets big enough to be dangerous, but the conditions are just poor. For the experts, there’s nothing to get excited about either. All this onshore wind and short-period slop means the setup looks way more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. It’s a blank run, so if you’re hanging for a wave, forecasts can change, but right now, you’re better off finding something else to do.
Rusty.
