Table - best surf conditions forecast for Whistling Sands (Porth Oer) over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at the local picture for Whistling Sands.
To be straight with you, it’s a tough run ahead. Whistling Sands (Porth Oer) is a sheltered, inconsistent little beginner spot, and right now it’s just not showing any life for the next couple of weeks. Every single entry in the forecast is stamped "poor surf conditions" with a score of zero. For a spot that's already inconsistent, this is a typical blank spell, and it’s not unusual for the area.
Looking at the immediate days, through this weekend and into next week, there’s barely a ripple. On Saturday (11 July) we’ve got a weak 3 ft swell from the NNW, but with a short period of 5 seconds and a 16 mph cross-onshore wind, it’s going to be messy and choppy. Wave energy is barely ticking over at 35. It’s not worth paddling out for.
Sunday (12 July) goes flat in the morning and the afternoon only offers a tiny 1 ft cross-shore bump from the NNE. The pattern of tiny, weak swell and cross-onshore wind continues right through the middle of the month. There are a few moments of clean wind, like Monday (13 July) morning with a light cross-offshore breeze, but there is no swell to push. The small windows of potential are completely empty.
Around Wednesday 23 July, we see a little spike in energy – the combined energy hits 160 on the Thursday morning with a 5 ft NNW swell, but it’s onshore wind again and the wave comment still reads poor. The period is short at 6 seconds, so it won’t have any shape to it.
The closest thing to a standout is the Saturday the 25th. The swell jumps to 8 ft (moderate energy at 399) from the west in the morning, and by the afternoon it’s 7 ft from the NW with a 7-second period and a clean cross-offshore wind from the SSW. That’s over 7 ft, so it’s only really for experienced surfers, and the period is too short for proper groundswell. For a sheltered break like this, it’s still going to be a messy, big, lumpy day. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing that afternoon.
The long-range at the end of the month shows the swell dropping away again. Honestly, there is nothing to chase. The water temp is sitting about 60°F, which is normal for this time of year, but you won’t feel it with no waves under you.
I wish I had better news, but the charts are clear: it’s a flat, poor-quality outlook for Whistling Sands all the way through to the 26th. Forecasts can always change, but right now, leave your board in the car.
Rusty.
