The Lowdown
Alright folks, I'm gonna level with you. The report on this spot isn't pretty.
Whistling Sands (Porth Oer) is the only break we've got to look at for the full 16 days, and the outlook is grim. This break is inconsistent and sheltered, and we are in a proper flat spell right now. The water temp is around 61°, which is about average for this time of year, but that's the only thing that's normal.
We've got a massive dry spell starting out. From Wednesday the 15th right through Saturday the 19th, it's practically flat. We're talking ankle-high dribble with onshore winds ruining it. Wave energy is tiny, with readings like 2 or 12. Just leave the board at home.
Sunday the 20th and Monday the 21st show a tiny bump, but it's still nothing. Swell is 0.3 ft to 2 ft from the north with a short period of 4-5 seconds. That's just weak windswell. Plus, the wind is cross-onshore or onshore, so it's choppy and messy.
The second week is slightly better, but still poor. On the 28th of July, we get a little pulse to maybe 3 ft from the north, but the period is a short 5 seconds and the wind is a fresh cross-onshore at 19 mph. The energy reading climbs to 44, which is still weak, but it will be lumpy. The 30th of July is the most active day, with a 4 ft swell from the west and a 4-second period, giving energy readings of 55 to 57. Still weak, but it's the best of the bunch. The wind that Thursday morning is a cross-shore from the WSW, which is okay, but it's not the clean offshore we need.
Honestly, there are no good days. Nothing is big enough, clean enough, or consistent enough to say "go surf." The wind is almost always onshore or cross-onshore, messing up any wave that appears. The swell directions (NNW, N) are wrong for this spot – it needs a SW swell to work. For beginners, the size stays under 5 ft, so that's not the problem; it's the flat, choppy junk. The setup here looks way more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.
A blank run like this happens here sometimes. It's not fun, but the forecasts can change. For now, keep your board dry.
Rusty.
