Table - best surf conditions forecast for Whistling Sands (Porth Oer) over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough one for the next couple of weeks. We’re looking at Whistling Sands (Porth Oer) and to be honest, the surf forecast is a bit of a heartbreaker.
Right through the period, the swell is tiny and weak. The combined energy of all swells directed here is very low, often just single-digit values like 5 (moderate wave energy). We’re dealing with a lot of poor surf conditions, and the wind is rarely on our side. The water temp is sitting at 60°F which is about normal for the time of year, so at least you won't be freezing while you're sitting there waiting for a wave that never comes.
We start off with nothing. Friday the 10th through to the 20th is a long, dry spell. The swell is pretty much non-existent, with heights barely cracking 2 ft. The wind is mostly cross-onshore or onshore, making it choppy and messy. There’s a brief moment on Sunday the 12th morning with a clean cross-offshore breeze, but with swell from the NE at just 1 ft and a period of 3 seconds, it’s barely a ripple. You’d be better off going for a swim.
There’s a slight flicker of hope on the 20th, with a little more size, but still poor surf conditions. The first real standout, if you can call it that, arrives on Saturday the 25th. The morning sees a 4 ft swell from the WSW, with a period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 146 (moderate). That’s the biggest we’ll see, but the wind is a cross-onshore from the WNW at 16 mph, making it choppy. It’s not great, but it’s the best on offer. This is a sheltered spot, and it’s inconsistent, so don’t expect much.
The afternoon of the 25th cleans up nicely with a cross-offshore wind from the SSW, but the swell drops right back to 1 ft. Typical.
The real gem might be the morning of Wednesday the 22nd. We’ve got glassy conditions with a 2 ft swell from the SW and a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is 33 (moderate). The wind is basically nothing, a slight air from the WSW. That’s the cleanest window we get. It’s small, but it’ll be the most fun you’ll have on a longboard. The afternoon of the 22nd is also glassy, but the swell drops to 1 ft. Crowds are possible here, but with this lack of surf, it might be just you and the seagulls.
So, the outlook is bleak for the first week and a half. The second week offers a couple of tiny windows, but nothing special. The 25th morning has the most size, but it’s messy. The 22nd morning has the best conditions. If you’re desperate, that’s your window. Otherwise, keep the board in the van and wait for the next system.
Rusty.
