The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you: the outlook for Whistling Sands (Porth Oer) over the next 16 days is a long, flat stretch. We’re looking at a real dry spell, so don’t be rushing to get the wetsuit on just yet.
Right off the bat, there’s nothing to ride. The first two weeks are basically a write-off. From Tuesday, 14 July all the way through to Saturday, 25 July, we see nothing but tiny, weak swell with no energy behind it. The wave energy is consistently in the low double digits or single digits (like 14, 21, 12), which is basically nothing. The wind is mostly cross or cross-on, and the surf is just poor. It’s a long gap of maybe 11 days with no real surf to speak of. Even the Sunday morning of 19 July offers a bit of offshore wind, but the swell is only 2ft with a short period of 5 seconds – it’s just not enough to get excited about.
For a sheltered spot like this, it’s a tough run. The water temperature is sitting at 61°, which is about normal for this time of year, so that’s not the issue.
The first real flicker of hope comes on Sunday, 26 July morning. We’ve got a clean 2ft swell from the SW with a period of 6 seconds, and a light offshore wind from the SE. The energy is still weak (27), but it’s glassy and clean. It’s a beginner-friendly size, but don’t expect any power. Then on Monday, 27 July, we have a moderate offshore wind from the SSE with a 0.7ft swell – again, tiny but clean. The afternoon of the 27th goes glassy with a 2ft SW swell, which is the best of the bunch, but still small.
Honestly, if you’re desperate, the 27th of July afternoon is the only standout. It’s glassy, the swell is clean, and the water will be dead flat. But with such weak energy (29) and a short period (7 seconds), it’s more of a longboard or a funboard session than anything else. The crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so you might have it to yourself, but it’s not worth the trip unless you’re local.
Apart from that, the rest of the period is a bust. The wind is too strong or cross-onshore, and the swell is just too small. It’s a blank run, and for this area, that’s normal when the Atlantic is sleeping.
Stay patient, keep an eye on the charts. Forecasts can change.
Rusty.
