The Lowdown
Right then, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Whistling Sands (Porth Oer).
To be straight with you, the next 16 days are a tough watch. We’ve got a long, dry spell of nothing much happening. The first few days are a write-off, and we don’t get a sniff of anything decent until the very end of the run. It’s one of those periods where the forecast is just cruel.
From now through to the 23rd of July, there’s barely a ripple worth paddling for. The swell is tiny, with periods so short you’d be bobbing around like a cork. The wind is mostly cross or onshore, messy and lumpy, so forget about any clean lines. For a spot that’s already sheltered and inconsistent, this is a real flat spell. By the 22nd and 23rd, we’ve got strong winds and rain, but still no real swell to back it up.
Now, finally, we get a little flicker of hope. On the morning of July 24th, we see a 4ft swell pushing in from the southwest. The combined energy is moderate (123), which is the best we’ll see all period. The wind is light, only 3 mph cross-on, so it’ll be rideable, but don’t expect perfection. The period is short at 6 seconds, so it’ll be a bit crumbly and fat. That afternoon, it drops to 4ft (108 energy), still cross-shore with a light breeze. It’s not a standout, but it’s the only game in town.
The 27th and 28th bring some cleaner conditions with offshore and cross-offshore winds, but the swell is small and weak. The 28th morning has a 3ft swell from the west-southwest with a moderate 101 energy, but the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-off, so it’ll be choppy and difficult to enjoy.
The water temperature sits around 61°F when we first see a wave, which is about 2°F warmer than normal for the time of year – a nice little bonus for the skin.
To be honest, there’s no true standout here. If you’re desperate for a paddle, the 24th of July is your best bet, but keep your expectations on the floor. The setup is so weak and inconsistent that it’s not worth getting excited about. For a sheltered spot like this, a blank run is more normal than not, so don’t throw your board in the bin just yet. Forecasts can change.
Rusty.
