The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s in store for the next couple of weeks.
Well, I’ll be straight with you – this is a tough stretch. We’re looking at a long, dry period with very little to get excited about. For the next several days, it’s a whole lot of nothing. From this Saturday right through to the end of the month, we’ve got a run of tiny, weak swells and onshore or cross-onshore winds that are just going to make a mess of things. The first few days are a total write-off, and it stays pretty grim for a solid week.
Then, on Thursday the 27th of August, there’s a sudden flash in the pan. The afternoon shows a 7ft swell from the WSW. The wind goes glassy, which is a rare treat. The combined energy of all swells directed here is strong (412). That’s a proper, clean wave. The swell period is short at 7 seconds though, so it’s going to be a bit crumbly and won’t have that long-distance punch. Also, at 7ft, this is getting into the size that’s best left for the experienced crew. The rest of the week after that drops back into tiny, weak surf.
The following week, around the 2nd and 3rd of September, we see a bigger pulse of energy. The combined energy of all swells directed here hits over 1000, which is very strong. The swell is peaking on the 3rd of September, Thursday morning, with a 8ft swell from the SW. The wind is offshore, which is a major positive. The trade-off? The guidance says it’s hard to paddle into, and the period is 10 seconds, which is decent but not a classic long-period groundswell. At 8ft, this is solid and only for competent surfers. The crowds at Whistling Sands (Porth Oer) can be an issue sometimes, so expect a few locals out for that one.
Honestly, the only standout here is that Thursday the 27th of August. If you’re keen and have the skills, the glassy clean conditions on a 7ft wave is your best bet. The big swell on the 3rd of September is a close second, but it’s a long way off and the forecast confidence is lower. For the rest of us, it’s a lot of flat spells and choppy days.
Rusty.
