The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's on offer at Whistling Sands (Porth Oer). I've got to be straight with you – this isn't a week for getting your hopes up for a classic session. The wind is just not playing ball for most of the forecast, and the swell is tiny.
The water is sitting at 61°, which is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
We start on Saturday 18th July. The swell is a pathetic 2 ft from the north, with a short, weak period of 4 seconds and a combined energy of just 12 – that's dead. The cross-onshore breeze is a brisk 15 mph, so it's going to be choppy and messy. It only gets worse in the afternoon with cleaner 4 ft surf but a 22 mph cross-on, making it lumpy. Honestly, nothing to get excited about.
Sunday 19th through to Tuesday 22nd July is more of the same. Tiny waves, all under 3 ft, with persistent cross-onshore winds. The swell periods are short, between 3 and 5 seconds, which means weak, crumbly waves. The combined energy barely cracks 30 (39 on Tuesday afternoon). It's all poor surf conditions.
Wednesday 23rd July morning sees a little bump – 4 ft swell from the NNW, but it's onshore and the energy is still only 94. It's not clean. The afternoon goes flat.
Thursday 24th and Friday 25th July are a bit of a tease. The swell drops to almost nothing – 0.3 ft. The period jumps to 13-14 seconds, which is a long period groundswell, but there's no height to it. The wind does go light and cross-off on Friday afternoon, so it'll be clean, but you'll be scratching for a knee-high ripple. The combined energy is 10.
Saturday 26th July morning is the only time the swell looks a bit more significant. We get a 4 ft swell from the NNW, but it's onshore with a 15 mph wind. The energy is 103, which is moderate, but the onshore wind will ruin it. The afternoon cleans up with a lighter WNW breeze, but the swell drops to 4 ft.
The rest of the period from Sunday 27th July to Sunday 2nd August is a write-off. The swell is tiny, mostly under 2 ft, and the wind is either onshore or cross-onshore. There are a few moments of clean, cross-off wind on the 28th and 30th, but the waves are too small to bother with. The combined energy barely registers.
The best look of the whole 16 days is probably the afternoon of Friday 25th July. It's clean, glassy conditions with a light SSW breeze, but you're only looking at 0.3 ft of groundswell. It's a perfect, flat, clean day for a paddle, but not a wave. For surfing, this is a tough run. The consistent cross-onshore winds and lack of any real size make it a stretch. If you absolutely must get wet, maybe the Saturday 26th July morning has the most water moving, but the wind will be a battle. Honestly, it's a better week for a kite if you've got the gear.
Rusty, signing off.
