The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, and this stretch of coast is having a tough time. There’s a long, quiet run ahead before we get anything with a pulse.

For the first week, from now through the 26th, it’s flat. Swell heights are barely 1 foot, and the combined energy readings are down in the weak range – single digits and low teens. The best of it is Monday morning the 24th, with an offshore breeze making it clean, but there's absolutely no swell to ride. You’re basically looking at a pond.

The first proper chance comes on Thursday the 27th afternoon. We finally see the swell push to 4ft from the SSW, with moderate energy (150). There's a light, clean cross-off wind, so the surface will be tidy. It’s a short-period swell though, around 8 seconds, so the waves will be fat and a bit soft. It’s surfable, but just barely.

We get a glass-off on the morning of the 28th, but with the swell dropping back to around 2ft, it’s a longboard morning before it fades.

Heading into September, the swell tries to show up but gets ruined by the wind. On Friday the 4th, we get a solid 6ft from the SW with a big energy jump to 553, but it’s short period and cross-shore wind makes it lumpy. Then Saturday the 5th and Sunday the 6th have strong SW winds that will rip the face apart. Whistling Sands is an inconsistent, sheltered spot to begin with, so it needs everything to line up.

The biggest swell of the window hits on Monday the 7th of September – 10ft from the SW with extreme energy (1318) – but a near-gale cross-onshore wind will turn it into a total whiteout. That’s a kite-surfing day, if anything. No quality paddle waves there.

Overall, there’s nothing to get excited about. The best we get is a so-so Thursday afternoon with 4ft fat swell. The water temp here is 62°F, right where it should be. It’s one of those stretches where the ocean is taking a nap, and we just have to wait it out.

Rusty.
