The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – if you’re lookin’ for waves at Whistling Sands (Porth Oer) over the next sixteen days, you’re gonna be disappointed. This is a tough one. The whole forecast window, from Friday 17th July right through to Saturday 1st August, is a total write‑off for surf. Every single session shows poor surf conditions, with nothing but cross‑onshore chop, tiny windswell, or flat spells. The water’s warm – about 61°F – a degree above normal for this time of year, but that’s the only bit of good news.
The break itself is a sheltered, inconsistent beginner spot, and that’s part of the problem. It rarely gets proper swell, and when it does, the wind’s never in the right place. The first few days are just hopeless: on Friday 17th there’s a puny 2 ft of 4‑second windswell from the north, with a stiff 16 mph cross‑onshore. That’s not surf, that’s whitecaps. Saturday 18th is even worse – 4 ft but with a fresh 22 mph cross‑onshore, lumpy as hell. The combined energy hits 101 on Saturday afternoon, but it’s just messy energy – no shape, no hope.
There’s a brief moment on Friday 24th July when the wind goes glassy, but the swell is only 0.3 ft – a flat calm, not a wave. Then on Monday 27th July, we get a 5 ft swell from the west‑southwest, period 5 seconds, combined energy 112 – that’s a moderate pulse. But the wind is onshore (NW 9 mph) and the conditions are still ranked poor. For a beginner spot like this, 5 ft is already pushing it, and with onshore wind it’s just a choppy mess. Not worth paddling out.
The rest of the window is more of the same: tiny swell, cross‑onshore winds, and occasional glassy moments but with zero height. The last few days into early August offer nothing. If you’re after a surf, you’re better off finding a different coastline. This is a proper flat spell – don’t hold your breath. The forecasts can always change, but right now it’s a blank run. For a spot that’s already inconsistent, this kind of stretch is pretty normal.
Stay hopeful, but stay dry.
