The Lowdown
Alright, let's get into it. This is a tricky one, looking at the Tuahine Point region. The next week and a half is mostly a write-off, but there's a glimmer of something special later on if you're patient.
The first few days are a mess. We've got a big, raw swell hitting the coast on the 18th and 19th, with wave heights over 8 feet and strong, ugly cross-onshore winds. That's expert-only territory, and even then, it's not going to be pretty. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The real story starts to shift on Friday, August 21st. The swell drops right down to a clean 3 feet, but the quality is where it's at. The wind goes light offshore from the NW in the morning, then goes dead glassy by the afternoon. This is a groundswell too, with a period of 16 seconds, so there's real energy lurking in those lines. The combined energy is moderate (1002), but the conditions are going to be absolutely pristine. This is the standout session for the first week. Friday morning will be a treat, but Friday afternoon with that glassy surface is as good as it gets.
After that, the surf fades into a long, flat spell. From Saturday the 22nd all the way through to the end of the month, waves are tiny, under 2 feet, with hardly any energy. The wind is often offshore, which is nice, but there's just no swell to work with. It's a real gap of about 10 days of nothing worth paddling out for.
Then, on Tuesday, September 2nd, we get a bit of a redemption arc. The forecast shows a jump back up to 7 feet of swell from the SSE, paired with a very long 16-second period. The wind is a light offshore cross-off from the NW, which should keep it clean. The combined energy is strong (1993), and the conditions are flagged as excellent for experienced surfers. That's a big, powerful groundswell on a reef, so it's not for the faint-hearted, but for the crew who know what they're doing, it could be the best day of the whole outlook. It's a long way out, so don't get too attached to the idea, but keep an eye on it.
So, for the crowned king: Friday, August 21st, especially the afternoon glass-off at Tuahine Point. For the brave, the *possible* standout is September 2nd, but that's a promise for the future, not the present.
