Table - best surf conditions forecast for Tuahine Point over the next 16 days.
Right, let’s have a look at what’s comin’ through for Tuahine Point. Honestly, the first week is a write-off for decent surf. There’s a few days where you’ll get waves, but the wind is a bloody mess. Strong onshore and cross-onshore stuff just kills it.
We’ve got a run of nothing until Sunday the 12th of July. The water’s a bit colder than normal for this time of year at 57°.
Sunday morning the 12th is the first real glimmer. Swell’s only 4ft from the ESE, period at 9 seconds, and the wind is light out of the west – it’s a cross-off. That gives us clean, surfable conditions with combined energy at 454 (moderate). The crowd factor is “sometimes” so you might get a peak to yourself.
Monday the 13th is small. Morning has 3ft from the ESE, light offshore from the NNW, clean but pretty ordinary. Combined energy is 190 (weak). Afternoon drops to 3ft, and it’s just not worth paddling out for.
The real standout comes on Saturday the 18th of July. Now we’re talkin’. Morning sees a 6ft swell from the SE, period 13 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. Light offshore NNW wind, clean as a whistle. Combined energy jumps to 1011 (moderate to strong). This is for experienced surfers only, as it’s over 5ft. The clean conditions and that long period will make for some excellent waves at Tuahine Point.
Sunday the 19th is also a gem. Morning has 5ft from the ESE, period 13 seconds, light offshore from the NNW. Clean again, with combined energy at 848 (moderate). Another day of very good surf.
After that, the swell hangs around but the wind starts to mess with it. Monday the 20th is still pretty good with 5ft to 7ft from the ENE, but it gets a bit lumpy in the afternoon. By Tuesday the 21st, it’s all over – strong cross-shore winds and rain.
There’s a strange one on Thursday the 23rd of July. Afternoon sees a 10ft swell from the south, period 9 seconds, but it’s predicted to be too big for this break. Same for Friday the 24th – 13ft and 15ft from the south, glassy conditions, but way too big. That’s expert-only territory, and even then, it might be dangerous.
So, my pick for the best on offer is Saturday the 18th of July, followed closely by Sunday the 19th. Clean, solid groundswell, light offshore winds. That’s the window to be in the water.
Rusty.
