The Lowdown
Hey, Rusty here. Tuahine Point – this reef picks up SSE swell pretty well, and it’s fairly consistent. Water temp is about 57°F, right around average for this time of year. Crowds are possible sometimes. The swell coming in is long-period groundswell, mostly from SSE and ESE, with periods well above 11 seconds – that means good shape and power on the reef.
Saturday 18 July morning: 4ft SSE swell at 14 seconds, clean with a cross-off NW breeze around 6 mph. Combined energy 932 – decent. Afternoon goes onshore and ugly.
Sunday 19 July morning is the first standout: 5ft SSE swell, 18-second period, cross-off WNW wind at 6 mph. Combined energy 1734 – strong. Clean, powerful waves – better for experienced surfers because of the size. Afternoon gets blown out hard.
Then a lull. Monday and Tuesday (20-21 July) are weak and choppy. Wednesday 22 July morning: a tiny 3ft SSE swell, clean offshore NW wind, but combined energy only 299 – small stuff.
Things stay pretty poor from Thursday 23 July through Sunday 27 July – onshore winds, small swell, messy conditions.
Tuesday 28 July morning: 4ft SE swell, 12 seconds, clean offshore NNW wind at 6 mph. Energy 444 – moderate, but clean.
The next real highlight is Wednesday 29 July – both sessions. Morning: 6ft ESE swell, 13 seconds, offshore NNW 9 mph, energy 1282. Afternoon: 6ft ESE, offshore NNW 6 mph, energy 1064. Both excellent for experienced surfers – that 6ft is big for a reef, and the wind is perfect. Thursday 30 July morning: 5ft ESE, 12 seconds, offshore NNW 6 mph, energy 555 – still clean and fun.
After that, winds turn onshore and quality drops through 31 July to 2 August, though Sunday 2 August morning has a small 4ft SE swell with cross-off NW wind – clean but not exciting.
Best bets: Sunday 19 July morning and Wednesday 29 July (both sessions). The rest of the period has plenty of junk, so pick your windows. The long-period groundswell will make the reef sing.
