The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's on the menu for Tuahine Point over the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a slow-burner, but there’s a serious pulse of energy waiting for us at the end.
We start off small. Friday the 21st sees some clean lines, a touch over two feet of south-southeast swell with a long 16-second period. The light northwesterly is just off-shore enough to keep things tidy, and the water temp is about average for this time of year. The energy is moderate, reading 460, and it’s a decent way to ease in. Friday afternoon actually pushes a little higher at 4ft and 691 on the energy, but the wind goes a bit cross, so the morning is your cleaner bet.
The weekend is pretty lackluster. Saturday and Sunday just don’t have the juice. The swell drops, and even though Sunday has a good off-shore wind, there’s just no size to it. It's a flat spell, and honestly, you’re better off doing something else. The gap between the decent conditions on Friday and the next real window is about ten days. It’s a proper drought.
We have a few average days in the middle of the week. Monday the 24th is ordinary, Tuesday the 25th is okay in the morning but nothing special. Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th both have clean mornings, but we're still only talking ankle-to-knee high stuff. It’s surfable, but it’s not going to get your heart racing.
Then we hit Monday the 31st of August. This is the standout. The swell kicks up to a solid 8ft from the SSE with that long 16-second period, and the energy reading is a massive 2469 – that’s strong, very strong. The morning wind is light and off-shore, and it’s going to be firing. This is a proper, groundswell-driven day. That size, 8ft is over the 8ft mark? No, just under, so it's big but still within the realm for experienced surfers. It's not for the faint of heart though. This is a reef break, and it's fairly consistent, so it’s going to be busy. You can expect crowds for sure. This one is for the crew who knows what they’re doing.
The energy rolls into the start of September nicely. Tuesday the 1st and Wednesday the 2nd both have clean mornings with 4ft of SSE swell and light off-shore winds. The energy is moderate, but it’ll be a much more manageable size after the chase of Monday. These are great follow-up days.
After that, it fades out again. The swell drops back down and we're back to small, weak conditions for the end of the first week and the start of the second. There’s a tiny blip of 5ft on the 5th, but the period is a short 7 seconds and the wind goes cross-on, so it’ll be a bit of a mess. Not worth the paddle.
So, the main event is the 31st of August. That's your standout. Set your alarm. The first few days of September are also worth a look if you want something a little less heavy.
