The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's check out the board for the next couple of weeks.
We've got a bit of a slow start, but the long-range is looking like it could be a proper one for the crew who know what they're doing. The first few days are small, but the waiting game pays off.
For the first week, the surf is pretty small and inconsistent. Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th are offering up some waist-high waves from the SSE, but the conditions are just "ordinary". The wind is a bit of a mess, so don't expect much. Wednesday morning the 26th sees a cleaner, offshore breeze from the NW, but the swell is still tiny at 2ft. It's a bit of a tease.
The real action starts to build on Thursday morning the 27th. Tuahine Point is waking up with a clean 4ft SSE swell, period stretching out to 18 seconds. That's a proper groundswell, and with a light NW offshore breeze, it’s going to be glassy. The combined energy is up there (737), so there's some grunt. This is going to be the pick of the first week for sure. Friday morning the 28th is a solid follow-up, with another 4ft SSE swell and more clean offshore wind.
Now, the second week is where it gets interesting, but hold your horses. After a bit of a lull over the weekend, we get a standout on Tuesday morning, the 1st of September. Another clean, 3ft SSE swell with a 16-second period and a light offshore breeze. The energy is building (552).
But the real headline act is Wednesday morning, the 2nd of September. We’re looking at a solid 7ft SSE swell, with a 17-second period. The combined energy is massive (2695). This is not for the faint of heart. It's expert territory, and with that long period, Tuahine Point (reef) is going to be the place to be. The wind is light and clean, so it's going to be a proper session for those who can handle it.
After that, things stay big but get a bit tricky. Friday the 4th of September has a massive 8ft SSE swell with a 21-second period—that's a very long period groundswell. The energy is through the roof (5853), but the wind is onshore, so it's a bit of a gamble. If you're a dedicated charger, Saturday morning the 5th is your next best bet with a 7ft SSE swell and a clean offshore breeze.
So, to call it: The standout is going to be Wednesday morning, 2nd September at Tuahine Point. The best of the first week is Thursday morning, 27th August. Get out there if you can.
Rusty.
