Updates in  hr  min  s Forecast update imminent

Alright, this is Rusty comin' at ya. Let's see what the charts are saying for the next couple of weeks at Tuahine Point. It's a bit of a mixed bag, so we'll have to pick our moments.

Right now, the old ocean is a bit moody. The water is sitting at 56°, which is a good couple of degrees colder than we usually see for this time of year – you'll feel that bite for sure. The coming week starts off with some promise but ends with a proper tantrum from the south.

We've got a little run of clean conditions from Friday the 3rd through to Sunday the 5th. Friday morning looks the pick of the early lot. Tuahine Point is seeing a clean, 4ft easterly swell with a solid 12-second pulse. That's a fair bit of energy pushing in (600) and with that light NW cross-off breeze, it’ll be holding up nice and tidy. Saturday and Sunday mornings are similar, with a clean offshore breeze and the swell easing from 4ft down to 3ft. The wave energy drops from 453 down to 200 by Sunday, so it'll get smaller and weaker as the weekend goes on. Not a bad little window to get wet.

Then things get ugly. From Monday the 6th right through to Sunday the 12th of July, it's a write-off. The wind screams from the south-southwest for days, hammering the point with onshore and cross-onshore junk. The swell jumps up, but it's all blown-out, lumpy chaos. That period from Thursday the 9th through Saturday the 11th is just silly – we're talking 12ft to 13ft of messy, wind-affected swell with energy readings in the thousands (3538 to 4699). That's big and nasty. Unless you're towing in or rigging a kite, stay on the beach.

Now, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. After that bluster dies down, we get a solid little window for experienced folks. Monday the 13th of July morning looks excellent. We've got clean conditions again with a light NW cross-off breeze, and a punchy 7ft swell coming from the SSW. The energy is strong at 1104. This is proper groundswell territory, but with a short 8-second period it'll be a bit crumbly and hollow. Definitely one for the crew who know what they're doing on a bigger day. Tuesday the 14th morning is similar with an 8ft S swell (1734 energy) and clean offshore winds.

But the real standout for quality is Wednesday the 15th of July. All day long we've got a clean, moderate offshore breeze from the NW. The swell is a solid 7ft to 8ft out of the east-southeast, and that period stretches out to a very long 12 seconds. That's proper groundswell energy (1413), which will wrap around the point beautifully. The waves will have real push and shape, but expect longer lulls between the sets. This is a day for a point break specialist. Tuahine Point will be well overhead and cranking, but with the size over 7ft, it's not a day for learners. It's a standout session for the confident surfer.

Don't get too excited for the weekend after that – the wind swings back onshore and the swell drops away through the 16th to the 18th.

So, to wrap it up: the first weekend has small, clean fun for everyone. The real gold is on Wednesday the 15th of July for the more experienced crew. Pick your window, 'cause that south swell is going to smash us first.

Rusty, signing off.
