The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.

Right off the bat, this is a tough stretch for Suicides. We’re looking at a solid 16-day window, but honestly, the conditions are a mess for most of it. The winds are just not playing ball, staying cross-on or onshore nearly the whole time, and the quality is shot. There aren't any good windows to paddle out for clean waves. For a spot this exposed and consistent, it’s a real bummer of a run.

The water temp is sitting at 75°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so the sting is a little less if you’re just sitting out there waiting for a clean one. But don’t hold your breath.

We’ve got a bit of swell building through the end of next week, but the wind is against us. From Friday the 21st right through to the end of the month, it’s a constant battle with moderate to fresh cross-onshore breezes, keeping things choppy and lumpy. The swell height hangs around the 3 ft to 6 ft mark with short, weak periods, so the energy is there but it’s not translating into anything you’d want to paddle out for.

Sunday the 23rd afternoon shows a spike in energy (825 moderate) with a longer 14-second period and a NNW swell, but it’s still onshore wind from the NW. That’s a classic “looks good on paper, messy in the water” scenario. For a sharp reef like Suicides, that longer period groundswell can make it wall up and pitch, but with that wind it’s just going to be a battle.

Monday the 24th sees the biggest swell of the run, hitting 6 ft from the NNW with 12-second period and strong energy (954 moderate). But again, it’s cross-on shore from the north. This is the standout for size and power, but only for the experts who can deal with the chop. For the rest of us, that’s kite-surfing territory.

After the 24th, the swell slowly winds down, but the wind stays stubborn. We’re in the same boat through to the end of the first week of September. There’s a brief hint of cleaner conditions on the 3rd of September with an onshore N wind, but the swell is tiny (3 ft to 2 ft) and the period drops out, leaving you with weak, short-period mush.

The last decent pulse shows up on September 5th afternoon with a 5 ft N swell and 8-second period, but you guessed it, cross-on winds again. No clean rides here.

The best of a bad bunch – and I’m scraping the barrel here – is Sunday August 23rd afternoon and Monday August 24th. The 24th has the biggest, most powerful swell (6 ft NNW, 12s, energy 954), but you’ll need to be an expert to handle the wind. The 23rd afternoon has a bigger period (14s) and cleaner-ish wind (on from NNW), but it’s only 4 ft. Neither are perfect, but those are the only moments with any real grunt.

For the rest of the 16 days, there are no clean, fun waves on offer. It’s a classic case of the swell showing up but the wind ruining the party. A blank run like this is not uncommon here when the trades lock in. As always, forecasts can shift, but right now, I’d keep the board in the bag.

Rusty.
