The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight up – the forecast for Suicides over the next 16 days is pretty grim. We’ve got a consistent run of chop, cross-onshore winds, and messy conditions from start to finish. The swell direction is almost always from the north, which for Suicides is about as wrong as it gets – this reef needs a decent NNW groundswell to light up, and the winds are just not playing ball. Water temp’s about normal for this time of year, nothing to write home about.
The first real chance of anything rideable might brush Monday the 24th of August morning, with swell pushing 5 ft from the NNW and a period of 12 seconds – that’s some proper long-period groundswell with moderate energy (730), but the wind is a gentle cross-onshore and it’s still fairly choppy. Still, if you’re desperate, that morning is the best on offer. By Monday afternoon, it drops to 5 ft with 11 seconds and the same onshore breeze.
After that, it’s back to poor conditions right through to the end of the month. Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th see the wind pick up into fresh and strong breezes – gusty, lumpy, messy. Swell jumps to 6 ft on the Friday morning, but with a nasty cross-onshore from NNE and a short 7-second period, it’s just a washing machine. Not surfable.
Saturday the 29th of August morning hits 7 ft from the north with a 10-second period and strong wave energy (1003), but the NNE wind at 30 km/h (19 mph) makes it a cross-onshore mess – this is more kite-surf territory than anything else.
Into the first week of September, same story: north-northeast winds, moderate to fresh cross-onshore, and swell around the 5 ft to 6 ft mark with short periods. Nothing cleans up. The last few days, Saturday the 5th of September morning, still 6 ft from the north, period 8 seconds, and a fresh 35 km/h (22 mph) cross-onshore – lumpy and poor.
Honestly, there’s no standout session in this whole 16-day window. The surf stays poor to marginal at best. If you’re really hanging for a paddle, the Monday morning of the 24th of August is your only flicker of hope, and even then it’s not clean. Otherwise, it’s a long stretch of blown-out chop.
Take a break, mate. It’ll come good eventually.
Rusty.
