The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what Suicides has cookin’ over the next couple weeks.
To be honest, it’s a pretty grim run for the most part. The swell sticks around, but the wind is going to ruin it. From now all the way through the 29th of July, it’s one long stretch of lumpy, cross-onshore junk. The energy is there, from a moderate (104) all the way up to strong (349) on the 23rd, but every session is plagued by a stiff northerly wind, leaving the surface blown to bits. That’s a week-long gap with no good surf.
Water temp is running about 73°, a touch warmer than the norm for this time of year.
The one clear standout is the morning of Thursday the 30th of July. The wind finally switches to the east and goes cross-offshore, giving us a clean, glassy surface. There’s a 1ft north swell with a short 7-second period, and the combined energy sits at a moderate 226. The waves will be clean, but you won’t be alone – crowds are sometimes a thing here.
That Friday, the 31st of July, the morning is a no-go with a fresh cross-shore, but the afternoon shapes up again with a cross-offshore breeze, though the swell drops to a tiny 0.9ft from the north.
Then on the 1st of August (Saturday), it’s barely worth paddling. A tiny 0.4ft swell from the NNW with a decent 10-second period, but the combined energy is a weak 95. The wind is light and cross-shore from the west, so it’s clean, just microscopic.
The bigger swell hits the last week of July – the 27th and 28th see waves jump to 2ft to 2ft from the north with strong energy (983), but with that relentless cross-onshore northerly wind, it’s going to be a messy, choppy beast. That size is for experts only, and the wind makes it even more of a struggle.
Bottom line: you want a wave, paddle out on the morning of Thursday the 30th. That’s your best, and only, clean window.
Rusty.
