The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let me be straight with you – it’s not looking great for the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a solid 16-day block of surf on tap, but the quality is the problem. For the whole run, it’s all "poor surf conditions." There are no standouts. Every day is a battle with the wind.
The first decent push of swell arrives Sunday afternoon, the 23rd of August, with a 4ft swell from the NNW. The combined energy jumps way up to 823 (moderate to strong energy), and the period is a nice 14 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell. But here’s the kicker: the wind is onshore from the NNW at 12 mph. It’s not cross-on, it’s straight onshore, making it a messy, choppy mess. It’s still the best-looking wave energy of the whole forecast, but you’ll be surfing whitecaps.
Monday the 24th of August morning is the biggest clean-up set, with a 6ft NNW swell at 12 seconds and strong wave energy (959). But again, it’s a moderate cross-onshore breeze from the north at 12 mph, which will turn it into a lumpy, cross-onshore slop. This is solidly in the "too big for beginners" but "okay for experienced" zone, if the wind wasn't ruining it.
By Saturday the 29th of August, we see another pulse: 7ft from the north (10 seconds) and combined energy of 926. The wind is still a fresh cross-onshore from the NNE at 19 mph. This is getting into expert-only territory for size, and with that wind, it’s going to be an absolute battle. Honestly, with that setup of significant swell, poor quality, and strong cross-wind at a break called Suicides, this looks way more interesting for kitesurfing than paddle surfing. You’d need a big board and even bigger patience.
The water temperature, as of the first data on the 22nd of August, is 75°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a little nice detail, but it’s wasted on this blown-out forecast.
From the 3rd of September onward, the swell drops right off, with waves barely hitting 3ft to 4ft and periods of 7-8 seconds. The combined energy falls back to 135 or so. It's flat-ish and still cross-onshore.
To be clear: there are waves every day on paper. But the report is consistent: "poor surf conditions." I wouldn’t be getting excited about a single window in this outlook. The best bet, if you’re desperate, would be the Sunday afternoon the 23rd when the longer-period swell arrives, hoping the wind backs off a bit, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. This is a rough stretch for paddle surfing.
Rusty.
