The Lowdown
Hey everyone, Rusty here. So we're looking at the next 16 days, and I'm gonna level with you – it's a real bummer of a forecast. The big picture is one long stretch of frustrating wind and junky surf. There isn't one session that jumps out and screams "paddle out now."
The water's a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, about 75°, so that's a small comfort.
Right from Sunday the 23rd, it's an uphill battle. The wind is stubborn, coming out of the north or north-northeast, blowing cross-onshore at 9 to 25 mph. The swell is there, but it's all chopped up. That morning brings a 3ft swell from the north, but that 9 mph breeze makes a mess of it.
Monday the 24th, the swell jumps to about 6ft from the NNW with a period of 12 seconds – that's some real wave energy (944). But again, the wind is 12 mph cross-onshore, and it's a choppy mess. This repeats day after day. By the end of the month, the swell drops, and on the 27th, energy is nearly gone (48), and a 19 mph NNE breeze makes it lumpy and horrible.
Through the end of August and the start of September, it's the same story. We see size again on Saturday the 29th with a 7ft swell from the north, period 11 seconds, energy a huge 1116 – but it's all blown out by a 19 mph cross-onshore wind. On a beach/reef setup, that's just a washing machine. Unless you've got a kite, it's not working.
The first week is a total washout. That's a solid 14 days with nothing worth paddling for. The wind just won't let up.
Even into the second week, September 4th and 5th, we've got 5ft to 6ft swell from the north, but it's the same pattern: cross-onshore breeze, messy, lumpy conditions.
Then, on Sunday the 6th, the swell direction finally shifts. We get a long-period groundswell out of the west-northwest with a 23-second period. Energy is moderate at 360, but the wave height is only 1ft. On Monday the 7th of September, it's similar: 3ft from the WNW with a 17-second period and energy of 452. The wind looks like it could turn offshore from the NNW, which is a big positive for cleanness. This is the *only* brief window in the whole 16 days. But it's still tiny, and the notes say "poor surf conditions." It's a glimpse of something better, not a guarantee.
So, to be straight with you: if you're really keen, the morning of Monday the 7th might offer a small, clean wave on a low tide bank, but don't expect anything before that. This is just a tough run of forecasts. Keep the board in the rack and the wax in the wrapper.
Stay salty, gang.
