Table - best surf conditions forecast for Suicides over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: the next couple of weeks are looking grim at Suicides. This is a solid, exposed reef that can handle a good swell, but the wind just ain’t cooperating. Nearly every day through the whole run is plagued by cross-onshore or onshore winds, which is gonna chop up the surface and make for poor surf conditions. The first real standout you’d want to even look at is a long way off, so prepare for a long, flat spell if you’re itchin’ for a wave.
For the first week, from July 9th all the way through to July 19th, it’s a write-off. The winds are mostly moderate to fresh out of the N or NNE, blowing right across or onto the swell. Swell sizes are mostly small, under 3 ft, with short, weak periods around 5-8 seconds. The wave energy is low, with values like 59, 50, and 43 (weak), and the water is running about a touch warmer than normal at 72°. The swell direction is from the N or NNW, which is well off the optimum, so the shape will be messy. Honestly, this is more of a kite-skipper setup than a surf one.
Then, into the second week, the swell does build. By July 19th we’re seeing 6 ft to 7 ft swell from the N, with periods stretching to 8-9 seconds and the combined energy jumping up to 912 (moderate to strong) on the Sunday morning. But the winds are still bad—cross-onshore from the N or NNE at 15 mph. The conditions are reported as “poor” or “marginal” at best. On July 20th, the Monday morning session gets a slight reprieve with an ENE cross-shore breeze at 9 mph, and the wave comment is a “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions.” That’s the closest we get to a real window. Swell is 6 ft from the N with a 9-second period, but with that light cross-shore, it might clean up for a short window. For a surfer who knows this reef, that’s the one to keep an eye on, but I wouldn’t call it a standout. After that, the wind turns back onshore again.
For the final days, July 22nd to the 24th, the swell drops back to 4 ft-5 ft, periods are short (7-9 seconds), and the wind is still on or cross-onshore from the N or NNW. The energy returns moderate levels (237-299). Still, with the consistent poor wind and cross-onshore chop, the setup is more interesting for a kite than a paddle.
Bottom line: There are no true standouts here. The best you can hope for is that Monday, July 20th, delivers a brief window of cleaner conditions if that ENE cross-shore breeze holds. But overall, it’s a two-week stretch where you’d be better off waiting for a change in the weather pattern.
Rusty.
