The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up.
Alright, I’ll be straight with you—this outlook is a bit of a tough one. We’ve got Suicides on the radar, a consistent reef break that’s exposed and best with a NNW swell direction. It’s an advanced spot, so it’s not for the faint-hearted. But the honest truth is, for the entire 16-day window, the conditions are just not cooperating. The wind is relentless, blowing from the north and north-northeast at 15 to 22 mph, sitting cross-on nearly every session. That’s going to mess up the surface, leaving it choppy and lumpy. There’s no standout day here, and no real best option—just a long stretch of poor surf.
Starting from Friday, July 17, through the weekend, the swell is around 3 ft to 4 ft from the north, with a short period of 5 to 6 seconds. The combined wave energy is weak to moderate (93 to 168), but the cross-on wind is a dealbreaker. By Monday, July 20, the swell picks up to 5 ft to 5 ft, and the energy climbs into the moderate range (243 to 260), but the wind is still fresh and cross-on. That pattern holds all the way through to Thursday, July 23, with swell up to 5 ft and period stretching to 8 seconds, energy hitting 351—still no good though.
The second week doesn’t offer much relief. From Saturday, July 25, the swell sits around 5 ft to 6 ft, and we get a brief moment of offshore wind on Saturday morning (NNW 12 mph), but it’s still marked as poor surf. The combined energy spikes hard on Sunday, July 26, with 608 in the morning and 599 in the afternoon—moderate to strong energy—but the wind is still cross-on. Then on Monday, July 27, the swell hits 7 ft from the northeast with a 9-second period, and the energy jumps to 1146 (very strong), but again, poor conditions. By Wednesday, July 29, the swell reaches 7 ft from the north with a 10-second period, and energy is up to 936—still cross-on and lumpy.
We finally see a bit of a drop on Thursday, July 30, and into Friday, July 31, with swell back to 5 ft to 6 ft, and energy dropping to 387 to 527. The wind backs off slightly on Saturday, August 1, with a light breeze from the northeast at 6 mph, but it’s still cross-on, and the swell is down to 4 ft with a short 8-second period. The energy is moderate at 213, but it’s still not a clean setup.
The water temperature anomaly isn’t given, so I’ll just say it’s about average for the time of year at Suicides. But honestly, with this persistent cross-on wind and choppy surface, it’s not a great time to be in the water here. This spot is advanced and consistent, but the wind is making it a no-go for paddle surfing. Given the strong swell and poor quality, this setup might be more interesting for kite surfing than a traditional paddle session.
So, no true standouts. The best you can hope for is a brief window on Saturday, July 25 morning, when the wind goes offshore, but the forecast still says poor surf. That’s about as close as it gets. Keep your eyes on the charts—it tends not to stay this poor forever, but right now, we’re in a rough patch.
Rusty.
