The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. I’ve had a look at the charts for Suicides, and I gotta be honest with you – it’s a tough stretch ahead. We’re looking at a solid 16-day window, but the conditions are stubborn. There isn’t a single day in this whole period that I’d call a standout. The surf is there, but the wind is just not playing ball, and the quality is shot.
Right from Wednesday the 19th of August through to Thursday the 3rd of September, it’s the same story. The swell hangs around, mostly from the north, bumping between 2 ft and 6 ft. The period is short, mostly 7 to 10 seconds, so it’s just windswell – not the kind of groundswell that gets you excited. The major issue is the wind. It’s relentless from the north, north-northeast, and north-northwest, blowing at 12 to 22 mph. That means it’s cross-on, on, or just generally messy and lumpy. The combined energy of all swells directed here is moderate to strong – between 125 and 493 – but it’s all wasted energy with that wind.
The water temperature is sitting at 75°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s the only highlight.
For the first few days, the swell is small, around 3 ft to 4 ft, but the wind is up. Thursday the 20th and Friday the 21st see a bit of height, but it’s choppy and poor. The weekend of the 22nd and 23rd is more of the same – messy, cross-on, and not worth paddling out for. Going into the next week, Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th, the swell picks up a bit, but the wind cranks to 19 mph, making it lumpy and unappealing.
By the end of August and into early September, the swell gets bigger – 5 ft to 6 ft – but it’s still coming from the north with a short period. Swells over 5 ft with this wind and short period are just a washing machine. It’s the same story from Wednesday the 26th of August through to Thursday the 3rd of September. The wind is consistently fresh, and the conditions are described as poor surf conditions across the board.
Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The strong, consistent north wind and the moderate to strong swell energy would be a dream for a kiter, but for us surfers, it’s a no-go. There are no days with clean, offshore conditions. The optimum swell direction is from the north-northwest, and the swell is coming from the north, so it’s in the right direction, but the wind is ruining it.
There are no standouts here. Not a single day where I’d say, “Go, get in the water, it’s worth it.” It’s a long gap of poor quality. The break itself is consistent, but that doesn’t help when the conditions are this bad. It’s a reef break, so it’s not a total write-off, but with this wind, it’s just not going to shape up.
Hang in there, folks. The forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a solid two and a half weeks of frustration.
Rusty.
