The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s coming for Suicides.
Honestly, mate, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough outlook. We’ve got a solid 16-day window, but the conditions are just not cooperating. The onshore winds are relentless, coming from the north and northeast, and they’re going to be a major factor right through the whole period. The waves are there, but they’re ugly, blown-out, and messy. There’s no standout day, no real golden window. It’s a long stretch of poor surf conditions.
Looking at the first week, starting Saturday the 22nd, the swell is small and choppy. The water temperature is sitting at 75°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s something. But the wind is a constant cross-onshore, and the swell energy is weak to moderate. The best energy we see is on Sunday afternoon the 23rd, with a 4 ft swell from the NNW, a 14-second period, and a combined energy of 806 (moderate wave energy), but it’s still got an onshore wind, so it’s not clean. The next couple of days, the swell bumps up to 6 ft on Monday the 24th, but it’s still cross-onshore and choppy. That swell is too big for beginners but not clean enough for anyone else.
As we move into the second week, it’s more of the same. The winds pick up even more, with gusts up to 25 mph on Friday the 28th, making it strong, messy, and lumpy. The swell stays around 6 ft to 7 ft, but with that wind, it’s just a washing machine. The combined energy values are moderate to strong, like 948 on Saturday the 29th, but it’s all for nothing with the wind. The water temperature anomaly is no longer available in the data for the rest of the period, but it doesn’t matter much when you can’t surf it.
The last few days into the first week of September are a slight drop in swell size, with 3 ft to 5 ft, but the wind is still a problem. The period is short, mostly 7 to 8 seconds, so the waves are weak and choppy. The combined energy is low, dropping to 97 on Friday the 4th. It’s a real bummer.
There’s no break to highlight here. Every single entry is marked as “poor surf conditions.” The wind is always cross-onshore or onshore, and the swell is never clean. For a reef break that is exposed and consistent, it’s a huge letdown. If you’re a kitesurfer, this might be your jam with the strong winds, but for paddle surfing, it’s a write-off. The setup is interesting for kite surfing, with the strong winds and consistent swell, but not for us.
So, I’ll say it plain: there are no good surf options in this 16-day window. The forecast is poor, and the conditions are locked in. It’s not a normal blank run for this area, but it’s happening. Take a break, sharpen your fins, and wait for the weather to change. Forecasts can shift, but this one looks grim.
Rusty.
