The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window is a tough one for Suicides. It’s a proper advanced reef break, and it’s exposed to the swell, so it can get waves, but the wind just won’t play ball. We’re looking at a long, frustrating stretch of poor surf conditions, with a big gap of no quality waves right at the start.
From Tuesday the 14th of July right through to Sunday the 26th of July, it’s all cross-onshore wind, mostly from the north or northeast, blowing at 9 to 19 mph. The swell is small to moderate, bumping up from 1 ft to 6 ft, but it’s all short-period, wind-driven junk. The water temp is sitting at 73°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a little bonus, but it won’t help the surf. The wave energy is weak for most of it, sitting under 100 (82) on the Tuesday, then climbing into moderate territory (123 to 160) by the weekend, and even hitting strong levels (353 to 535) late in the month, but it’s all blown out. The wind is always onshore, making it choppy and lumpy. There’s nothing here worth paddling out for.
The only real shift comes on Monday the 20th of July afternoon, when the wind briefly goes onshore (not cross-on) but it’s a small blip in a sea of poor conditions. Sunday the 26th of July morning sees the biggest swell of the period at 6 ft from the north, with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy is a strong 535, but it’s accompanied by a fresh cross-onshore breeze at 19 mph. That’s a lot of lumpy, messy water – not for paddling, maybe a kite surfer’s dream. The strong wave energy continues through to Monday the 27th of July and Tuesday the 28th, but the wind stays onshore, so it’s all just a washout. The last few days (Wednesday the 29th) still have fresh cross-onshore winds. There’s one standout, and it’s a matter of picking the least worst option: Saturday the 25th of July afternoon has a decent 5 ft north swell, 8-second period, and strong energy (425), but the wind is a moderate cross-onshore breeze. It’s still messy, but if you’re an expert and desperate, that’s your window. The best chance for clean waves just isn’t here – no glassy, no offshore, just a solid run of onshore wind. For a break that’s consistent, this is a real bummer. It’s the kind of run where you just wait for a change in the forecast.
Rusty.
