The Lowdown
Alright mates, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the Suicides (Suicides_2) over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, I’m gonna be honest with you – this is a tough stretch. We’ve got a solid run of poor surf conditions stretching all the way from now until the end of August. The wind is a constant problem, mostly cross-onshore from the north and northeast, and the wave energy is weak to moderate at best, with the combined energy bouncing between 107 and 262 (moderate). The swell is short-period windswell, mostly 7 to 8 seconds, which means the waves are gonna be choppy and weak. The water is sitting at 74°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t freeze.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Sunday, the 30th of August. The morning shows a bit of a change – the swell picks up to 7ft from the north, and the period stretches to 9 seconds, pushing the combined energy up to 722 (strong). The wind is still a gentle cross-onshore breeze, so it’s not perfect, but it’s the best we’ve seen. The guidance says this spot is an advanced, consistent reef break that loves NNW swell, so this is a decent match. The water is still a touch warmer than average, and with the longer period, the waves will have a bit more shape. But be warned, the crowds are sometimes an issue here, and it’s an advanced wave, so keep your wits about you.
The real standout, and the one I’d be circling on the calendar, is Monday morning, the 31st of August. The swell is 7ft from the north, the period jumps to a very long 12 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy – and the combined energy hits 1135 (strong). The wind is a gentle cross-onshore, so it’s not glassy, but with that long period, the waves will have plenty of power and longer gaps between sets. For a reef break like Suicides, that long-period swell is a blessing. It’s going to be big and strong, definitely for experts only. The water is still a touch warmer than normal, and the crowds might be there, but if you’re keen, this is the moment.
After that, the runs into early September look pretty average again, with the wind picking back up and the swell dropping off. So, if you’ve got a window, make it the 30th or 31st.
Rusty.
