The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Suicides over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it's a rough start. For the first few days, we're looking at onshore or cross-onshore winds out of the North, and the wave comment is plain "poor surf conditions" with scores of zero. There's really nothing to get excited about through Thursday the 20th and into the weekend. The swell is small, around 2ft to 4ft, and the period is short and weak, with combined energy readings sitting between 130 and 219 (moderate wave energy). It's choppy and messy.
We do see a bit of a pulse on Sunday the 23rd afternoon. The swell picks up a touch to 3ft from the NNW, and the period stretches out to a very long 15 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 559 (moderate wave energy). But the wind is still onshore from the NNW, and the report still says "poor surf conditions." So, while the long-period groundswell is a hint of better things, it's not clean enough to surf.
The real standout in this whole forecast window is the stretch from Saturday the 29th through Sunday the 30th. On Saturday the 29th, we’ve got a solid swell building. The morning sees 6ft from the NNW with a period of 12 seconds, and the combined energy is a massive 1144 (strong wave energy). By the afternoon, it’s up to 7ft from the North, still with a 12-second period, and energy a whopping 1456 (strong wave energy). That’s some serious grunt. The problem is the wind. It’s a fresh breeze from the North at 22 mph, blowing cross-on. The report says "fresh cross-onshore and lumpy" and "poor surf conditions."
Sunday the 30th is similar: 6ft in the morning, 6ft in the afternoon, both from the North with a period of 11 seconds, and energy readings of 798 and 610 (moderate to strong wave energy). But again, it’s a fresh cross-onshore breeze from the North/NNE. It’s a real shame because the swell is there, and the period is long enough to push some real power through. For a reef break that is consistent and exposed to the swell, this is a setup that’s going to be big, raw, and wild. With the wind the way it is, the waves will be blown out and lumpy. This is honestly more interesting for the kite surfers than for paddle surfing. The water is about a touch warmer than normal for the time of year, sitting at 75°F.
After that, the swell drops back down through the first week of September, but the wind stays stubbornly cross-onshore from the NNE. The energy fades, and the quality remains poor. There’s a gap of several days with no recommendations, and the forecasts can change, so don't lose hope entirely, but for now, the outlook is lean.
So, the best on offer is that big, powerful swell from the 29th and 30th, but only if you're an expert with a big wave board and don't mind some serious wind. For a clean, lined-up wave, this window doesn't really deliver.
Rusty.
