The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. I’ve got the long-range outlook for you, and I’ll be straight with you – it’s a tough one. We’re looking at a 16-day window that starts off with a big, empty gap. There’s simply no surf worth paddling out for in the first week and a half, so don’t bother checking the cam until we get closer to the end of the month.
The only spot on the radar is Reef la Maddalenetta. It’s a reef setup that rarely breaks, so the fact that it’s even on the list is a bit of a tease. The water is sitting at 81°F which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so if you’re in the water, you won’t need a thick suit.
The first real whisper of life shows up on the morning of Friday, 24 July. A small WNW swell pushes in at 3ft, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is weak (98), so it’s not going to be a standout. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the SE, which will keep things clean. It’s small, but it’s the first rideable bump we’ve seen.
The afternoon of the 24th sees the swell bump up a little to 4ft from the NW, with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy ticks up to a moderate 194, so there’s a bit more push. The wind shifts to a light cross-onshore from the NW, which will introduce some texture to the surface. It’s still not a classic, but it’s the best the window has to offer.
After that, the energy drops right back off. The morning of 29 July brings another clean window with a 3ft swell from the WNW, a 7-second period, and a light cross-offshore breeze from the NE. The energy is weak (92) again. It’s a repeat of the same small, clean conditions, but nothing to get excited about.
The rest of the period into early August is flat with zero combined energy. This is a long, quiet stretch for the area. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a waiting game. If you absolutely have to get wet, aim for the 24th or 29th, but keep your expectations low.
Stay patient.
Rusty.
