The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll level with you – this isn’t a classic outlook where we’re hunting for a standout session. The next 16 days are a write-off for any decent surf at Reef la Maddalenetta. We’ve got a long dry spell with hardly any swell to speak of. The first record on the 15th of July shows tiny 1ft SW swell with a short 5-second period, and a combined energy of only 10 (weak). That’s not even worth paddling out for, and the cross-onshore wind just messes it up. It’s a rare-breaks reef setup, so it takes a decent swell to even get it going, and we just don’t have that.
The whole first week – from the 15th through to the 24th – is flat or near-flat. You’ll see the odd ripple like 0.3ft or 0.7ft, but with combined energy values mostly under 5, it’s barely moving. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual. There are a few glassy moments – like the morning of the 16th, 18th, and 22nd – but with zero swell, glassy conditions don’t mean a thing. It’s a dead period.
Then, on the 25th of July we get a little spike: a 2ft WNW swell with a 7-second period, combined energy of 42 (still weak). The morning is glass, but it’s still poor surf. The afternoon jumps to 5ft NW swell, combined energy 422 (moderate wave energy), but the cross-onshore wind and the short period make it a messy, choppy affair. Not one for the quiver. The 26th of July morning has a clean 3ft WNW swell with a 7-second period under light offshore winds from the ENE, combined energy 105 (moderate). It’s the best we get, but that’s not saying much – the swell is short-period and the reef rarely breaks, so it’s a gamble. After that, it fades back to nothing.
Honestly, there’s no standout here. If you’re desperate, the 26th of July morning is the only window with a clean, offshore wind and a bit of energy, but it’s still poor quality. This area is known for long flat spells, so this blank run is pretty normal. Keep an eye on the forecasts – things can change. For now, I’d leave the board in the car.
Rusty.
