The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. We’re looking at Punta Prima for the next 16 days, and I gotta tell you, it’s a tough stretch. The swell just isn’t showing up with any real intent, and we’re mostly staring at tiny, weak waves. The water is a scorching 83° – that’s way above normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t need a wetsuit.

The first week is a real struggle. From Sunday the 2nd of August through to the end of that first week, we’re talking about knee-high dribble. The energy is pitifully low, with combined swell energy readings barely cracking double digits – mostly sitting between 1 and 28 (for context, anything under 100 is weak). The wind is a constant problem too, mostly onshore or cross-onshore, making what little bump there is a complete mess. Poor surf conditions are the story here.

Saturday the 8th of August is the only flicker of light in the first week. The morning offers a glassy surface with the wind going dead calm. The swell is still tiny, only 0.7ft from the ESE, but glassy conditions at an exposed spot like Punta Prima with a longer 5-second period might just give you a couple of clean, knee-high rollers. The energy is still weak at 22. After that, it’s back to the same old story of onshore wind and flatness through the middle of the month.

The second week? Look, nothing changes. The wave heights just don’t get above 2ft on any given day. The morning of Saturday the 15th of August sees another glassy moment with a 1ft swell from the ESE (energy of 10), but it’s a brief window before the afternoon onshore kicks in. The pattern is consistent: a few clean mornings, then the easterly wind ruins it.

The best bet in this whole 16-day window is the morning of Saturday the 8th of August. It’s the only time you get a glassy surface with the most wave energy (28) of the entire period. Sure, it’s only 0.7ft, but you’ll be the only one out there, and a clean knee-high wave is still better than a choppy flat one. This is an inconsistent spot, and this run shows why. For the rest of it, you’re better off waiting for a better forecast. This is a kite surfer’s setup more than a paddle surfer’s, given the onshore wind and small swell.

Rusty.
