The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s coming our way for Punta Prima over the next couple of weeks. I’ve got to be straight with you: this forecast is a tough one. There’s no real stand-out session, and a lot of the time it’s just going to be a case of managing expectations.

The overall pattern is flat and unexciting. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak swell with a lot of onshore wind that’s going to mess things up. You’ll be looking at a blank run of several days before anything even slightly worth mentioning shows up.

Alright, let’s get into it. This week is a write-off. From Monday the 7th right through to Friday the 18th, there’s nothing for us. The swell is consistently under 3 ft with periods bouncing around 4 to 8 seconds, and the combined energy is mostly sitting in the weak range (under 100), often just a couple of digits. The wind is all over the place – cross, on, cross-on – and it’s keeping the surface messy. You’ll see the odd glassy morning, like Tuesday the 8th morning (WSW 3 mph) or Saturday the 12th morning (NW 3 mph), but there’s just no water moving to make it worthwhile. It’s frustrating because the conditions could be clean, but there’s no push.

There is a tiny glimmer on the morning of Thursday the 18th of September. Early that day, we’ll see a bump of swell to 4 ft from the NE with a period of 5 seconds. The combined energy is still moderate at 66, so it’s not powerful, but we get a glassy morning with a NE 3 mph wind. The file calls it “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” – and that’s exactly what it is. Not good, not great, just a wave you can bob around on if you’re desperate.

Now, we get a small pulse of energy on Monday the 22nd of September. There’s a jump in the combined energy to 167 (moderate) on Tuesday morning the 22nd, with swell at 3 ft from the E and a 6-second period. The wind is light from the ENE at 3 mph, giving us a light cross-onshore. It’s nothing special – bigger than we’ve seen, but still on the small side. The water temperature is 80°F, which is a whopping 4° warmer than normal for this time of year (much warmer than normal). So you’ll be surfing in a bath.

For the whole period, the water temp anomaly is only recorded on the first day, but it’s a big one. At 80°F, that’s a solid 4° above average, which is already notable.

Honestly, the only day that even comes close to being a pick is Tuesday the 22nd morning, but it’s a stretch. In the early part of the second week, the weak energy continues, so don’t hold your breath.

To sum it up: keep your expectations low. We’re in for a long, flat spell. The 18th morning offers the only shot at a paddle, but it’s ordinary. This area just isn’t delivering for the next 16 days.

Stay tuned, forecasts can change. Rusty out.
