The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. I’ve been staring at the charts for Punta Prima, and I gotta tell ya, it’s a tough stretch ahead. This is one of those periods where you might be better off polishing the wax off your backup board, because the surf is pretty much flat or miserable for the entire 16-day window. There’s nothing on the table that I’d call a standout, not even a little one. The water is a crazy 84°F (that’s a massive 7°F above normal – feels like a warm bath out there, very unusual for this time of year), but that’s about the only thing going for it.
The first week is a total write-off. Thursday the 20th kicks off with a weak 3ft swell from the SSW, but it’s a short, messy 6-second period and the wind is a stiff cross-shore, so the energy is weak (125). It’s a no-go. Friday the 21st morning sees a tiny 3ft drop, but it’s clean with a cross-offshore breeze. Still, there’s barely any energy (60), and it’s just not worth the paddle. Saturday the 22nd drops to a pathetic 1.0ft, and Sunday the 23rd morning shows a glassy 2ft, but it’s from the east with no push. The rest of that week is just a blur of ankle-snappers and onshore chop. There’s a long gap of days with practically nothing to recommend.
Going into the second week, the pattern doesn’t change. The 28th of August morning has a weak 1ft from the SSW with clean conditions, but that’s like calling a puddle a wave pool. The 29th of August morning is glassy, but only 3ft of weak east swell (58 energy). It’s not going to barrel. By the 30th, it’s back to tiny stuff. The forecast runs into September with the same story: small, weak pulses of energy, mostly onshore wind, and nothing that breaks the 4ft mark on the 2nd of September afternoon, which is just a short-period wind swell from the ENE. The whole run is a blank spell, and for this area, that’s just how it goes sometimes.
Honestly, if you’re desperate for a splash, the only window that isn’t entirely terrible is the 25th of August morning. The swell is tiny at 3ft, but the wind is a light cross-offshore from the SW, making it clean. Same for the 27th of August morning, with a clean 2ft. But these are not “surf trips.” If you’re a kiter, this stretch might be more interesting than for a paddle surfer, especially when the wind fills in from the east, but for a wave rider, I’d say save the petrol and wait for a proper forecast.
Rusty.
