The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what's cookin' in our slice of the Med. To be honest, the charts are lookin' a little flat and sad for the next couple of weeks. There's no real swell energy to get excited about, and what's on offer is mostly blown-out or tiny. I'm calling it straight: this is a lean spell.
We've got Punta Prima as our only option, and it’s an inconsistent beginner-friendly wave that’s exposed to the swell, preferring an ESE direction. The water is seriously warm right now, about 85°F, which is a whopping 7°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that's very unusual, feels like a bath.
There’s a gap of a few days with absolutely no surf worth mentioning right at the start. Things stay tiny and weak until the morning of Thursday, August 20th. That morning we see a pulse of SSW swell at 3 ft, with a period of 7 seconds, giving us moderate energy (68). The wind is a clean offshore from the W, so conditions will be glassy and clean. It's surfable, but only if you're desperate and just want to bob around. That afternoon, the wind swings onshore and the swell disappears, so that window is small.
Honestly, the only half-decent chance in the entire forecast is the morning of Monday, August 24th. We get a little bump from the SSW again, 2 ft at 5 seconds, but more importantly, we get light offshore wind from the W. The water will be clean. It’s still small, but it's the cleanest window we've got. That afternoon, the swell actually builds a touch to 4 ft (energy hits moderate at 180), but the wind switches to a cross-shore from the S, putting a bit of a chop on the face. It might be a bit bumpy for a longboard session.
After that, it's a long, slow grind of tiny waves and onshore junk all the way through the end of August and into September. The morning of Thursday, September 3rd, there's a faint pulse of E swell at 3 ft, but with wind from the NE, it's going to be cross-onshore and weak (69 energy). Nothing to write home about.
To sum it up: it's a quiet period. If you're desperate for a paddle, aim for the clean but tiny windows on the mornings of August 20th, and especially August 24th. Otherwise, save your wax.
Rusty.
