The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cooking for Punta Prima over the next couple of weeks.

Honestly, it’s a tough stretch ahead. The ocean’s looking pretty flat and uninspired right from the get-go. We're looking at a long, dry spell starting from August 9th. For day after day, the swell just isn't there, with weak little waves barely pushing 2 ft and the combined swell energy sitting in the doldrums, mostly under 40 – that's barely a ripple. The wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore for the first week, making things even messier. There are a few glassy mornings on the 10th, 11th, and 12th with a slight air, but there’s just no proper swell to make them worthwhile. It's a frustrating start, no two ways about it.

We get a tiny flicker of hope on August 19th, Wednesday morning, when the swell finally starts to show some life. We're looking at 4 ft from the east with a period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy jumps up to 234 – that's moderate energy, finally something to work with. But then the wind ruins it, blowing a fresh cross-onshore at 19 mph on the afternoon. It's a classic case of “so close, yet so far.”

The only real window that’s even worth a mention lands on August 20th, Thursday morning. The swell picks up to 4 ft from the east, with an 8-second period and decent energy (136). The real winner here is the wind – it goes offshore from the west at a light 6 mph, keeping things clean. The wave comment even says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” Still, that offshore window is rare in this forecast, so if you’re desperate for a paddle, that’s your best and likely only shot. Because the swell size is under 5 ft, it’s okay for most levels, but it’s hardly going to set the world on fire.

After that, it’s back to the same old story – small, weak swells and poor wind into the final week. Overall, the water temperature is a scorcher, coming in at 84° which is much warmer than normal for this time of year.

Bottom line: don't hold your breath. The morning of August 20th is the only standout in a very flat outlook.
