The Lowdown

Alright folks, it’s Rusty here. I’m gonna level with you straight up. We’ve got a 16-day window, and honestly, it’s a tough one for the Punta Prima area. The models are showing a real dry spell with no proper surf to get excited about. The whole period is a bit of a write-off for anything that’d get your heart pumping. We’ve got a long gap of nothing but small, weak dribble, so don’t be holding your breath for a big session.

The very first read on Saturday, August 1st, is grim. We’re looking at a tiny 1ft swell from the east with a period of only 4 seconds. The combined energy is a measly 3 (weak), and the wind is howling straight onshore at 9 mph from the east. It’s a full-on mess. The water is a toasty 83°F, which is a massive 6°F warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s seriously unusual.

Sunday the 2nd starts with a glassy, clean morning, but it’s still just 1ft of the same weak, short-period ESE swell. The wind is light offshore from the WNW at 3 mph, which is beautiful, but there’s nothing to ride. The afternoon gets ruined by a cross-onshore wind.

Monday the 3rd morning sees a slight bump to 2ft from the south, period 6 seconds, and the energy creeps up to 23 (weak). It’s glassy from the NNW at 3 mph, so it’s clean, but that swell is barely a ripple. The afternoon is back to onshore junk.

Tuesday the 4th morning is dead calm with 2ft from the south, but it’s just not enough.
Wednesday the 5th and Thursday the 6th are more of the same – tiny, weak, and messy.

We hit Friday the 7th and there’s a flat patch with zero swell energy. That’s a full day of nothing.

Saturday the 8th and Sunday the 9th offer a few glassy windows, but the swell is still pathetic at 1ft to 2ft and the energy stays low (8 to 27). The wind is light offshore on those mornings, which is the only thing saving it, but the waves just aren’t there.

The rest of the second week is a repeating pattern of tiny east-southeast windswell in the 0.6ft to 2ft range with periods of 4 to 5 seconds. The combined energy rarely gets into double digits, staying weak. The wind is often onshore or cross-onshore, keeping things choppy and uninviting.

There is a tiny glimmer right at the very end. On Sunday, August 16th, the morning shows a glassy, clean face with a 3ft swell from the ENE, period 5 seconds, and energy up to 30 (still weak). The wind is light offshore from the west at 3 mph. It’s the best looking window of the whole 16 days, but that’s not saying much. Even then, the afternoon gets messy.

So, the honest truth? There’s nothing here that counts as a standout. The whole forecast is a bust. For a spot that’s exposed and inconsistent, this kind of blank run is just part of the deal. The only positive is that it’s a beach setup, so when the swell is this small and the wind is poor, it’s more interesting for the kite crew than for paddle surfers. Hang tight, check back in a few days – forecasts can change.

Rusty.
