Punta Prima Surf Forecast and Surf Report

G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you—this stretch of coast is going to be a tough one for the next couple of weeks. The swell is mostly tiny, the winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and there are long gaps where you’re better off doing something else. I’m not going to sugarcoat it: there are no real standouts on the board for the whole 16-day window. If you’re a beginner, you might find a few knee-high wobbles, but even that’s a stretch. For everyone else, don’t get your hopes up.

Right now, Tuesday the 4th, it’s flat out poor. We’ve got a weak 1 ft SSW swell coming in at 6 seconds, but the morning is clean with light WNW winds at 3 mph. The water is 83°, which is 6° warmer than usual for this time of year—that’s a big deal, very unusual. By the afternoon, the wind swings SE at 12 mph and it’s cross-onshore, chopping up what little there is. Energy is only 6 on the combined scale, so it’s dead.

Wednesday the 5th and Thursday the 6th are more of the same—tiny 1 ft SSW swells, short periods of 4 seconds, and onshore winds in the afternoon. The mornings are a bit calmer, but with wave heights like that, you’re just paddling for nothing.

We hit a full flat spell from Friday the 7th through Sunday the 9th. The energy drops to zero for a couple of days. There’s a slight bump on Sunday the 9th morning—a 2 ft E swell at 5 seconds, glassy conditions with light NW winds—but it’s still below surfable. The afternoon picks up a touch to 2 ft but it’s onshore ESE. Honestly, not worth the drive.

Monday the 10th and Tuesday the 11th stay in the doldrums: 1 ft to 2 ft swells, short-period, mostly onshore or cross-onshore winds. The mornings are glassy on Monday and Wednesday the 12th, but the swell is just too small. Wednesday afternoon gets a bit of an E breeze, and the surf stays pathetic at 1 ft.

Then we hit another big gap—Thursday the 13th and Friday the 14th are completely flat again, zero energy. That’s a full two days with nothing. You’d be better off checking the tide pools.

Saturday the 15th brings a weak 1 ft SSW swell with a 5-second period, but the winds are cross-onshore in the morning and onshore in the afternoon, so it’s messy and tiny.

Now, keep an eye on Sunday the 16th. The morning looks like the closest thing to a highlight we get. A 3 ft NNE swell, 7 seconds, with light west winds making it glassy—clean conditions, energy at 128 (moderate). It’s still small, and the break is exposed to ESE swell, so this northerly direction isn’t ideal, but it’s the only real surfable wave of the period. The afternoon drops to 2 ft and gets cross-onshore, so get out early if you’re keen.

Monday the 17th starts okay—2 ft ESE swell, light west winds, clean—but the afternoon turns ugly. The swell jumps to 6 ft from the NE at 6 seconds, but it’s onshore ENE at 12 mph, and the energy jumps to 303 (strong). That’s a lot of motion with no quality—choppy, messy, and for a beach-and-reef setup like this, it’s more interesting for kite surfers than paddle surfers.

Tuesday the 18th has a bit more size—5 ft E swell at 8 seconds, energy at 241—but the winds are up at 12 mph, cross-off in the morning (clean, but the period is still short) and cross in the afternoon, making it a chop fest. Not the day.

After that, Wednesday the 19th fades back to 2 ft and onshore winds. The window closes with a whimper.

To be clear, Punta Prima (this is the only break on the radar) is listed as inconsistent, and it shows. There’s no good surf on offer for the next 16 days. The consistent thing here is the poor conditions. But hey, forecasts change—if the wind swings offshore and a real groundswell decides to show up, things could turn around. But right now, I’d leave the boards at home.
