The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what's on the table for Punta Prima over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you – it's a quiet stretch.
Right off the bat, we've got a big fat zero for the first few days. Tuesday the 15th through to Monday the 21st of September is pretty much a write-off. The swell energy is basically non-existent, maxing out at a weak 76 (combined energy) on Sunday the 20th. Winds are a mess of cross-on and onshore, mostly from the east-northeast, just chopping up the tiny dribbles. The water is unusually warm – about 2° warmer than average for this time of year, which is notable, but with no surf it doesn't mean much.
There’s a tiny flicker of hope on Monday the 21st morning. We get a small 3ft swell from the east-northeast, period 5 seconds, and the wind goes light from the north-northwest, leaving it pretty clean. The wave energy climbs to 73, but it’s still just surfable in a very ordinary way. Not a stand-out by any stretch.
After that, we slip back into flatness or tiny, onshore slop until Tuesday the 29th of September. That morning, finally something shows some spine. The swell jumps to 5ft from the east, with a period of 6 seconds. The wind goes glassy from the west. The combined energy hits 151, which at least feels like a real wave. That’s the pick of the entire forecast window – a clean, glassy morning with waist-high-ish sets. But don't get too excited; it's still rated as just surfable but very ordinary.
The afternoon gets messy again with a cross-onshore breeze. The following morning on the 30th has a 4ft swell but the wind is already cross-on.
Overall, Punta Prima is an inconsistent spot, and this run proves it. There’s a massive gap with nothing worthwhile. For the patient surfer, the glassy morning of Tuesday the 29th is the only real bet, but keep expectations low. The second week is a one-morning wonder, and even that is modest.
