The Lowdown
Right, Rusty here again. Let’s break it down in feet and Fahrenheit for you. At Punta Prima, the water is a balmy 82°F, which is way warmer than usual, but the surf is a sad story for the next 16 days.
We’ve got a seriously long stretch of nothing. The first time you might even bother looking is Thursday morning, August 27th. There’s a tiny 3ft swell from the SSW, period of 7 seconds, and weak energy (79). The wind is light cross-off from the NNW, so it’s clean, but it’s just not doing anything.
Friday morning, August 28th is a repeat – 3ft from the SSW, still a 7-second period, but with a clean offshore breeze from the W and slightly more energy (95). It’s surfable, but only just.
Then we hit a dead zone. From the 29th through to September 4th, it’s flat to 2ft with short, choppy periods and onshore winds. Don’t bother.
The only thing that jumps out is on Friday afternoon, September 4th. The swell jumps to 5ft from the NE, with moderate energy (123). But the wind is onshore from the ENE at 9 mph, and the period is a messy 6 seconds. That’s going to be a bumpy, blown-out mess at an already inconsistent break. Honestly, the setup looks better for kite surfing than paddle surfing, and the swell direction isn’t what the spot likes.
The rest of the run into mid-September is more of the same – tiny waves, short periods, and wind issues. There are a couple of glassy mornings (like September 5th and 9th), but the swell is a pathetic 2ft to 3ft. Nothing to get excited about.
This is a blank period for the area. Don’t chase it. Wait for the next system to roll through.
Rusty.
