The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let me tell you straight up: it’s looking quiet out there for a while.

We’re kicking off the forecast on Friday 24 July, and honestly, I wouldn’t even bother paddling out. The water’s running at a warm 83°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year—feels more like a bath than the ocean. But that’s where the good news ends. The swell is tiny, barely 1 ft from the SSW with a short, weak period of 3 seconds and combined energy of just 3. There’s no power, no push. Friday afternoon is the same story, with cross-on wind making it choppy and messy.

This flat spell hangs around for a good stretch. Saturday 25 July does see a little bump to 3 ft from the SSW with a period of 6 seconds and combined energy of 56, but the wind is cross-off in the morning, so it might be clean. Still, it’s poor surf—not worth suiting up for. Sunday through to the end of the month is a grind of weak, onshore junk; nothing gets above 4 ft and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-on, with combined energy staying in the weak double digits.

We’ve got a gap of several days with no real recommendation. The first serious interest shows up on Tuesday 4 August, early morning. Now, that’s over a week away, so take it with a pinch of salt, but it does look like the best of a quiet bunch. The swell picks up to 3 ft from the SSW with a period of 7 seconds, combined energy of 69. The wind is light and cross-shore from the NNE, so it’ll be clean with just a little texture. For Punta Prima, an exposed spot that’s inconsistent and best with an ESE swell direction, this SSW direction isn’t ideal, but it’s the best we’re going to get. The crowd factor is listed as “often” here, so you might have company, but the waves will be small and weak—beginner-friendly, but nothing to write home about.

After that, it fades again. The final week is a flat, wind-affected mess with tiny swell and poor conditions. Nothing stands out as a true gem. For a spot that’s inconsistent, this blank run is pretty normal. Forecasts change, but right now, I’d leave the board in the car.

Rusty.
