Alright, Rusty here, let’s break down what’s going on at Punta Prima.
First off, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it—there’s almost nothing doing for the first week. From July 13th all the way through to the morning of July 21st, it’s flat, tiny, and messy. The swell is barely a ripple, the wave energy is weak (all readings under 100), and the wind is just no good. A long, frustrating gap for any surfer.
But then, on Tuesday morning, July 21st, things finally look up. We’ve got a pulse of moderate energy (combined energy of 205) with a 1.2m swell coming from the NE. The period is a short 6 seconds, so it’s not a classic groundswell, but the wind is glassy. Zero wind. That’s a game-changer for clean surf. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no complaints there.
Punta Prima is an exposed break, and while that NE swell isn’t its ideal direction (it likes ESE better), the clean, glassy conditions make it the standout session of the whole forecast. This spot is inconsistent and best for beginners, and at 1.2m it’s a perfect size for them. Just remember, the glass-off is only in the morning—by afternoon the wind turns cross-onshore and it’s all over.
After that, it’s back to the same old story: tiny swells under 2ft and onshore breezes for the rest of the month. A real dry spell.
So mark that Tuesday morning on your calendar. It’s the only real window.
Rusty.
