The Lowdown

Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on the menu for Punta Prima over the next couple of weeks.

Honestly, it’s a pretty flat spell we’re looking at. The wave energy is just not there, and the forecast is full of poor surf conditions. We’ve got a long stretch of hardly anything to work with.

The first bit of hope comes on Thursday, the 30th of July, with a tiny 2 ft swell from the ESE, but it’s a short-period 5-second windswell and the wind is blowing onshore. The water is running at 82°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year.

Friday morning the 31st looks glassy but the swell drops to just 1 ft, and the energy is a very weak 4. After that, we’re looking at mostly knee-high dribble with periods of glassy conditions, like on Saturday morning the 1st of August, but the swell is only 1 ft from the E.

We get a tiny bump on Monday the 3rd of August, with swell hitting 2 ft from the S and 6-second period, and the combined energy climbing to 24. The Tuesday morning after that is worth a mention: the wind goes offshore from the W at 6 mph, and the swell holds at 2 ft from the S. It’s not big, but it’ll be the cleanest wave of the early run.

The real standout, and I mean the only one that gets the blood pumping, is the morning of Friday the 14th of August. Glassy conditions, not a breath of wind, and the swell bumps up to 2 ft from the E with a 5-second period. The wave energy hits 11. It’s small, but with zero wind, you’ll be able to catch anything that rolls through.

Then, on the afternoon of the 14th, the swell kicks up a notch to 2 ft from the E, with a 6-second period and the energy jumping to 35, but the wind swings onshore. It’s a trade-off: more size, but messier.

For the rest of the window, it’s a lot of flat days with the occasional tiny pulse. The swell direction is mostly from the E or SSE, which is not ideal for this spot. It’s an exposed break, and the best direction is ESE, but the energy is just too weak.

Overall, if you’re a beginner, the tiny, clean days are your best bet. For the rest of us, it’s a waiting game. The water is warm, but the surf is not.

Stay patient,
Rusty
