The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let's look at Punta Prima in the old measurements.
First up, no bones about it—the surf is in the doldrums. The whole 16-day window kicks off on Monday, August 31st, and it's flat as a pancake.
That first Monday afternoon? 0.7 ft of weak, short-period swell from the ESE with a cross-on breeze. Water's a warm 80°F, a touch above normal for this time of year, but that's the only notable thing. It's all "poor surf conditions" from start to finish.
We're talking days of 0.7 ft to 2 ft of swell, mostly from the E or ESE, with periods no longer than 4 or 5 seconds. The wind is nearly always blowing cross-on or onshore, making it choppy. The combined swell energy is stuck in the low double digits at best, often single digits. It's a flat, frustrating run. This lasts right through the first week and into the second.
There's a tiny lift on Saturday, September 12th. The morning is clean with a light offshore from the W, and we see a 2 ft ESE swell. The energy climbs to a moderate 22, and for a brief moment, it's not a total write-off. Sunday the 13th morning looks similar—clean, cross-off breeze, and a 3 ft ESE swell (59 energy). But again, the afternoon turns choppy.
The 14th and 15th have some swell (1 ft to 3 ft), but the wind is messy again. The whole run is a washout with "poor surf conditions" recorded for every single period. Punta Prima is an inconsistent beginner spot, and this forecast shows exactly why.
Kite surfers might find some use in the persistent onshore winds, but for a regular surfer, you're praying for the clean, small windows on the morning of Saturday the 12th and Sunday the 13th of September. That 2 ft to 3 ft ESE swell is the best you're going to get, and that's not saying much.
Rusty.
