The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Punta Prima over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s looking pretty bleak for the paddle surfer. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, poorly directed swell and tricky winds coming up, so don’t get your hopes up. The first couple of days have a bit of energy, but it’s all small and sloppy.
Starting Monday, July 27th, we see a tiny 1ft swell coming from the east with a short period of 5 seconds. The morning is glassy, but that swell is so weak it’s barely worth calling a wave – combined energy is only (18). The afternoon turns onshore, so that’s a write-off. Tuesday and Wednesday the swell bumps up a touch to 3ft to 4ft, still from the east-southeast, but the period stays a weak 6-7 seconds. The cross-onshore wind keeps things messy; the highest combined energy we see is (107) on Wednesday morning, which is only just moderate. It's poor surf in my book.
Then from Thursday, July 30th, right through the first week of August, the swell just fades away. We are looking at a serious gap with almost nothing on offer. Heights drop below 2ft, periods drop to 4-5 seconds, and the combined energy falls to single digits. There are a couple of glassy or clean mornings – like Monday August 3rd morning with a 1.0ft bump and glassy conditions – but the swell is just too tiny (combined energy of just 4) to push a rideable wave. You can sit out there with a longboard and a prayer.
That dead spell stretches all the way to about Sunday, August 9th, where we see a tiny 0.7ft to 1.0ft bump appear again, but it’s from a short period swell with weak energy and often onshore or choppy conditions. It’s just not happening.
To be honest, this stretch is more interesting for a kite surfer given the onshore wind on some of those afternoons, but for a surfboard, you are looking at a long blank run. For an inconsistent spot like Punta Prima, this kind of flat spell is pretty normal, so don’t lose faith – forecasts can change, but right now? There's nothing to get excited about.
Rusty.
