The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you, mate. I’ve looked at what’s on offer at Punta Prima over the next 16 days, and to be honest, it’s a pretty grim picture. The swell is tiny, the period is short, and the combined energy is weak. We’re looking at flat spells and a lot of days where you’d be better off doing something else.

From now through the end of July, it’s a write-off. The water is sitting at a very unusual 83°F – that’s 6°F warmer than normal for this time of year, which is a bit of a shock to the system, but the waves are just not there. You’ve got a tiny, short-period swell from the east at 2ft to 3ft, with periods of 5 to 6 seconds, producing combined energy values that barely reach 94 (moderate). The wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, so it’s messy and weak. There’s no stand-out session here.

The first week of August doesn’t get any better. Swell drops to 0.7ft to 2ft, with energy values falling into the single digits. The only slightly interesting moment is the morning of Saturday the 1st of August, when we get a glassy 2ft swell from the east (period 5s), but with only 20 of combined energy, it’s just a dribble. The morning of Sunday the 2nd of August is glassy with 2ft, but again, it’s barely a ripple.

The gap of poor surf runs from now all the way through the first week of August – a solid 12+ days of nothing worthwhile. Then, around the 5th of August, we see a tiny blip: Wednesday morning gives a 3ft swell from the north-east (period 5s), but the wind is cross-onshore, and the energy is weak at 68. It’s a no-go.

The morning of Thursday the 6th of August is glassy, but the swell is a pathetic 1ft from the north-east (period 7s), energy at 29. Not enough to move you.

After that, it’s back to flat. The 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th of August are all showing either no swell or tiny, onshore mush. The 11th has a morning with 1ft and a moderate cross-onshore wind at 16 mph, which is just choppy and unrideable.

The long-range doesn’t offer any hope. The only standout is the fact that there are no standouts. The combined energy is consistently weak, and the swell direction is never hitting the optimum from the ESE for this spot. For a break that’s already inconsistent and rarely breaks, this is a long, flat run. It’s not looking good for a paddle – maybe a good day for a cold drink and a walk on the beach.

This is Rusty, signing off.
