The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about Punta Prima in terms you can feel. The next 16 days are a tough watch. I’ve looked at the whole forecast, and there’s no reason to get wet until the morning of Saturday, September 19th. That’s a nine-day stretch of nothing.
The water temperature is 81°F right now, which is about 5°F warmer than usual for this time of year. The ocean feels like a bathtub, but that’s the only good news.
The first real chance is Saturday the 19th morning. Swell is 4ft from the ESE with a period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate at 148. The wind is glassy, meaning the surface will be clean. But the waves are just “surfable but very ordinary.” The break is inconsistent, so you’ll be scratching for waves, and it’s often crowded, so expect company.
Sunday the 20th morning is your next best shot. Swell is 4ft from the ESE, period 7 seconds, energy at 143, with a clean cross-offshore wind. Again, it’s ordinary, but it’s the most rideable it gets.
The rest of the window is a slow slide into flatness. Tuesday the 22nd has a long-period groundswell of 10 seconds, but the swell is only 2ft from the NE, so it’s weak and gutless.
For a spot that’s exposed, this is a brutal run. If you’re a beginner, the 4ft on the 19th is your limit, but the inconsistency and crowds will test your patience. For everyone else, it’s a low-percentage gamble. Forecasts can flip, but right now, I’d find something else to do.
Rusty.
