The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Punta Prima over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty flat and disappointing outlook for this spot. The first week and a half is mostly tiny, weak surf with onshore or cross-onshore winds messing things up. There’s a bit of a pulse around the 19th and 20th of August, but even then, the wave quality is just ordinary. For a break that’s inconsistent and only wants an ESE swell, the stars just aren’t lining up.
The water is sitting at a very unusual 84°F – that’s a massive 6°F warmer than normal for this time of year, so it’ll feel like a warm bath out there.
Right. The first real chance of anything rideable comes on Wednesday afternoon, 19th of August. There’s a jump in energy to a moderate 134 (combined energy) with a chest-high 4ft swell from the ESE. The period is short though, only 6 seconds, so it’ll be a bit weak and crumbly. The good news? The wind goes light cross-offshore, keeping it clean. But the rating says poor surf conditions, so don’t expect miracles. It’s the best of a bad bunch for the more experienced crew.
Then on Thursday morning, 20th of August, we get the cleanest window with a light offshore WNW breeze and a 3ft east swell. The energy drops to a weak 83, and period is still a short 6 seconds. It’s surfable but very ordinary. The afternoon glass off is pretty, but the swell drops to 3ft. This is the standout window, but only just.
After that, it’s back to tiny, choppy nothingness for days on end, with a gap of no real surf from Friday the 21st through to the end of the period. Bigger surf isn’t on the cards here.
For a beginner spot that rarely breaks anyway, this is a blank run. The consistent lack of size and clean windows is pretty normal for Punta Prima when the direction isn’t spot on. The best call is Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning if you’re desperate, but don’t get your hopes up.
Rusty.
