The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.

Honestly, looking at the whole 16-day window for Punta Prima, it’s a grim stretch. We’re talking about a long, lean run with barely a pulse. The first real chance to even *think* about paddling out doesn’t show up until the morning of Friday, August 7th, which is over a week away. Before that, we’ve got a solid week of flat to tiny, messy conditions. The swell is mostly weak and short-period, with the combined energy barely cracking 100 (mostly values between 2 and 68), which is just sad. The wind is usually onshore or cross-onshore, wrecking what little shape there is. The water is about 82°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year—a solid 5° anomaly, so you’ll be sweating in your wetsuit if you wear one.

Alright, so the only standout—and I use that term loosely—is the morning of Friday, August 7th. There’s a bump of ENE swell coming in at 5ft, with a period of 6 seconds. That’s short-period stuff, so it won’t have much push, but the combined energy hits 164, which is the most we’ll see all fortnight. The wind is glassy out of the SSW, so it’ll be clean. That’s the best we’re getting. For a beginner spot like Punta Prima, 5ft is right on the edge of being too big, but with the glassy conditions, it might be okay for the more confident ones. The swell is from the ENE, which is not the optimum ESE direction, but we’ll take what we can get.

The rest of the period is a write-off. After the 7th, it drops back to tiny, weak, and mostly blown out. There’s a brief moment on the morning of Monday, August 10th with 3ft and glassy wind, but it’s from the ESE and only has a combined energy of 86, so it’s pretty weak. Not worth the hype.

Honestly, this is a classic case of the forecast looking bleak, but it’s a normal blank run for an inconsistent spot like this. It tends not to stay this poor for long, but for now, keep your board in the car and wait for the 7th. If you’re desperate, the morning of the 7th is your only shot.

Rusty.
