The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window for Punta Prima is a real test of patience. We're looking at a long, dry spell before anything remotely interesting shows up.
Right now, and for the next couple of weeks, it's a flat spell. We're talking tiny, weak swell with combined energy barely ticking over (5), and short-period windswell that's just not doing anything for us. The water is a touch warmer than average at 79°, but that's about the only highlight for a while. The first week and a half is a write-off. The 3rd of September through to the 16th is a gap with no real recommendations; just small, choppy, onshore junk. You'd be better off finding something else to do.
There is a glimmer of hope, but it's a long way off. On the morning of Thursday, the 17th of September, we finally see a pulse of energy. Swell bumps up to 4ft from the East, with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy hits 74 – still modest, but it's something. The wind is light from the NNE, giving us glassy conditions. It's surfable, but very ordinary.
Then, on the morning of Friday, the 18th of September, things look a touch better. We've got 4ft swell from the ESE, period still at 6 seconds (energy 90), and a light offshore from the SW. That cross-off wind should keep the surface clean. It’s the best of a bad bunch, but don't expect any fireworks. This is a beginner break that's inconsistent, and this window is looking very marginal. For a spot this exposed, we need a lot more oomph and a better direction to really light up.
Overall, it’s a bleak outlook. The only thing worth paddling out for is that Friday morning on the 18th, and even then, keep your expectations on the floor.
Rusty.
