The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you about Punta Prima. We’ve got a long stretch ahead with basically nothing to get excited about. The water is cooking at 81°, which is 4° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s well above average and feels like a bath.

The whole 16-day outlook is a flat, quiet run. From Sunday 30 August right through to Monday 14 September, there’s barely a ripple. The first few days have zero surf – flattish, glassy mornings but no swell to speak of. From Tuesday 1 September, we start seeing tiny pulses of weak easterly swell, but it’s all under 3 ft, with periods of 4 to 5 seconds – that’s short, weak windswill. The combined energy never cracks 70 (peak is 62 on Wednesday 2 September morning), so we’re talking feeble, disorganised slop.

The wind is a problem too. For most of this period, it’s cross-on or onshore from the east or northeast, with speeds up to 12 mph, making things choppy and messy. There are a few glassy windows – like Monday 31 August morning and Tuesday 8 September morning – but with no swell, it’s just flat calm.

The only faint glimmer shows up on Wednesday 9 September morning. That morning brings a clean, cross-offshore breeze from the southwest at 6 mph, and the swell bumps up to 3 ft from the northeast with a 5-second period and combined energy of 69. The wave comment says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions,” and honestly, that’s about as good as it gets – a 3 ft, short-period dribble, not worth paddling out for. The rest of the week is back to poor surf.

So, there’s no standout, no secret session, no reason to wax up. This is a dead period for surfing at Punta Prima. It’s a consistent area, so this kind of blank run happens, but it’s a long one. Keep your fins dry and wait for the next pulse.

Stay salty,
Rusty
