The Lowdown
Right, listen up. Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you, the outlook for Punta Prima over the next couple of weeks is pretty grim. The data is telling me there’s almost nothing worthwhile on the cards. The punchy east swell that’s been mentioned just isn’t showing up with any real power, and when it does, the wind is just about always in the wrong place. We’re looking at a long stretch of tiny, weak waves or blown-out junk.
The first real look at something that isn’t totally flat comes right at the end of the month. Tuesday, the 28th of July, early morning, there’s a glimmer. The swell is from the ESE at 3 ft, with a period of 6 seconds. The combined energy is a weak 61 km/h, so it’s not going to be powerful. But the wind is from the NNW at 3 mph and it’s glassy. For a few hours, that spot could be clean and rideable, but it’s still very ordinary. Honestly, it’s the only moment in the whole forecast that’s even surfable, but it’s not a standout.
After that, the swell builds a touch. The 30th of July afternoon sees a bit more size, 5 ft from the ENE, but the period is still short at 6 seconds, and the wind is a fresh onshore breeze from the ENE at 19 mph. That’s not going to be pretty. It’s choppy, blown out, and the combined energy of 150 km/h is moderate, but it’s not going to do you any favours with that wind.
The rest of the run is a write-off. Tiny bumps, poor wind, and a lot of flat spells. There’s a gap of days with absolutely nothing worth mentioning. The water temperature is 81°F, which is a massive 5°F warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least you won’t freeze while you’re staring at the flat ocean.
Don’t waste your petrol. The setup is so poor for paddle surfing that on the bigger, windier days, it honestly looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. We’ll see what the next run brings, but for now, this is a solid miss.
Rusty.
