The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you. The outlook for Punta Prima over the next sixteen days is a long, flat stretch with a couple of brief moments that might get your hopes up.

The problem from the start is there's just no swell to speak of. The first few days, from Friday the 28th of August right through to early September, are a write-off. We’re looking at tiny, weak waves—think 0.7ft to 2ft—with periods so short they don’t carry any punch. The water is warm, about 81°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s the only highlight. There’s a gap of nearly two weeks where the surf is just no good, with the combined swell energy barely cracking double digits (38 or less) most days.

You get a little bump around Wednesday the 2nd of September, with the swell trying to push up to 4ft from the ENE, but the wind is a fresh cross-onshore at 19 mph, making it lumpy and messy. Definitely a "poor surf conditions" call. Thursday the 3rd morning is a bit better with a 4ft ENE swell and 171 units of combined energy (moderate energy), but again, the cross-onshore wind spoils it.

The best chance in this whole run, and I mean the only real standout, comes on Friday the 11th of September. That morning, Punta Prima sees a 4ft swell from the NE with a period of 7 seconds, and the wind is offshore from the W at 9 mph. That gives you clean, offshore conditions. The combined energy is a solid 204 (moderate energy). It’s not a giant day, but for this break, that’s the ticket. The swell direction (NE) isn’t a perfect match for the optimum (ESE), but the clean wind and some energy are what you’re after. This is a beginner-friendly, inconsistent spot, so don’t expect pumping sets, but that morning window on the 11th is your only real chance for a surf.

Outside of that one morning, it’s grim. A few glassy mornings (like the 29th and 30th of August) are flat as a pancake. This is a long stretch of nothing, and for an exposed spot like this, that just happens sometimes.

Stay patient, boys. The 11th of September is your day.

Rusty.
