Table - best surf conditions forecast for Punta Prima over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at what’s cooking for Punta Prima over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I’m looking at a pretty bleak picture. The whole 16-day window is just one long stretch of tiny, weak swell with hardly any energy to get excited about. The combined wave energy rarely gets above a paltry 38 (moderate), and most days it’s sitting in the single digits or low double digits. We’re talking ankle-biters and knee-high slop, if that. The water is a notable 80°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t freeze while you’re floating around doing nothing.
The first real whiff of anything that breaks the 2ft mark comes on Sunday, July 12th, with a 2ft to 3ft swell from the NE. The morning is glassy, which is a gift, but with a period of only 4 seconds, it’s going to be a weak, bumpy mess. It’s still tiny, and the afternoon gets chopped up by an easterly breeze. Monday, July 13th, is similar with a 3ft NE swell and glassy dawn, but the energy is still pathetic (36). The afternoon picks up a little more energy (103) but the cross-onshore wind ruins it.
Further out, on Monday, July 20th, the afternoon sees a 3ft ENE swell, but the wind is a messy cross-shore chop. Then Tuesday, July 21st, morning has a clean offshore wind from the WNW and a 3ft ENE swell (6-second period, 34 energy), which is about as good as it gets in this run. Still, 3ft is not a wave you drive for.
You really have to sift through the dirt here. The best on offer, and I’m scraping the bottom of the barrel, is the Tuesday, July 21st, morning session. The break is Punta Prima, exposed to that small ENE swell, and we’ll have a clean offshore wind from the WNW. It’s the only time in the whole forecast we see a favorable wind direction with a half-decent bump. The swell direction is from the ENE, which is in the ballpark of the optimum ESE, but it’s a long shot. The wave is tiny (3ft), and the spot is inconsistent, so don’t expect much. Crowds are often a problem here, but with this outlook, it might be empty.
The one other standout, if you’re desperate, is Thursday, July 23rd, afternoon. The swell bumps up to 3ft from the S with a 6-second period and 42 energy, but it’s onshore wind from the ESE. Expect a bumpy, closing-out mess.
For the rest of the time, it’s a flat spell. There are long gaps of days with nothing but 0.5ft to 2ft scraps. This kind of blank run is pretty normal for a spot that’s inconsistent. The forecasts can always change, but right now, leave the board at home.
Rusty.
