The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get into it.

First off, I gotta be straight with you – for Punta Prima, this 16-day stretch is looking pretty flat and frustrating. We’ve got a long gap coming right from the start with nothing worth paddling out for.

The water is sitting at 84° – that’s 6° warmer than it should be for this time of year, so it’s feeling like a bath out there.

From Monday the 10th right through to Tuesday the 18th, it’s basically all tiny dribble. Swell heights are hanging around 0.7 ft to 2 ft, periods are short – usually only 4 to 5 seconds, so they’re weak windswells with no push. The combined energy figures are mostly low two-digit numbers, between 2 and 54, which is nowhere near enough to get excited about. Winds are all over the shop, but even when it goes glassy on Tuesday morning the 11th and Friday morning the 14th, there’s simply no swell to work with.

It’s not until Wednesday the 19th that we see a tiny pulse of life. The morning brings 3 ft from the ESE at 6 seconds, with glassy winds – finally a clean surface. The combined energy sits at 64, which is still weak but it’s the best we’ve seen. Still, 3 ft with a period of just 6 seconds means short little sections and not much power, so it’s only really worth a splash on a longboard or a foily. That afternoon though, the wind swings onshore and it’s back to slop.

Thursday the 20th offers similar early potential – 3 ft to 4 ft, same ESE direction, period at 6 seconds but the winds stay cross-onshore, so it’ll be bumpy and messy.

After that, from Friday the 21st through to Tuesday the 25th, the swell just fades away again. Heights drop back to 0.7 ft to 2 ft, and energy numbers nosedive down to 3 and 8. Even the glassy moments on Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th can’t save it.

So, to be honest, there’s no hidden gem here. No real standout. The best you can say is Wednesday morning the 19th and maybe Thursday the 20th early – but even then, it’s just small and unremarkable. If you’re desperate for a splash, take the log out when it’s glassy on the 19th morning. Otherwise, save your energy.

This looks more like a lake most days than a surf break.
