The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this outlook is a tough one. We’re looking at a full 16-day window starting now, and honestly, the surf just isn't showing up. For the first ten days or so, there’s a long stretch where the conditions are so poor that I can't even recommend a paddle. The swell is tiny, the wind is often onshore, and the energy is basically non-existent. It’s a real bummer for a stretch that should be firing.
We’re looking at Punta Prima as our only option. The water temperature is sitting at a very warm 84°F with an anomaly of 6°F, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s a real standout.
The first real chance at anything rideable doesn't come until the morning of Monday, August 17th. We’ve got a tiny 2ft swell from the south, with a period of 5 seconds. That’s short-period, windswell stuff. The combined energy is a weak 13, so don't expect any power. The wind is light from the WSW, a nice cross-offshore breeze, which will keep the surface clean. It’s not going to be a classic, but it’s the best we’ve seen in a while.
Then, on the morning of Tuesday, August 18th, we get a bit of a window. The swell is still tiny at 1ft from the ENE, but the period is a slightly better 6 seconds. The combined energy is a weak 15. The real positive here is the wind: completely glassy, calm from the south. That’s a major positive for clean conditions. It’s a morning for the longboard if you’re desperate.
Looking further out, the morning of Saturday, August 22nd offers a little more hope. The swell is still only 2ft, but from the east with a 6-second period. The combined energy is a moderate 41, which is the highest we’ll see in the whole run. The wind is light from the SW, a cross-offshore breeze, so it will be clean. It’s still small, but it’s the best energy we get.
Given the persistent small swell and the fact that Punta Prima is inconsistent, this is a period where you’re better off checking the forecasts again in a few days. It tends not to stay this poor for long. For now, the longboard is your only friend, and the 18th and 22nd are your best bets for a glassy or clean paddle.
Rusty.
