Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at a tough stretch for Punta Prima. Honestly, the 16-day outlook is pretty bleak. There are no good surfing options in the whole window, so I’ll give you the honest picture.
The first day with any surf on the cards is Monday the 6th of July, but that morning is flat as a lake with zero energy and glassy conditions – not a ripple. The entire first week is a write-off. Every day from Monday through to the following Monday shows tiny, weak swells, usually less than 2ft, with periods under 6 seconds. That’s windswell at best, and the direction is mostly onshore or cross-shore, so the quality is poor. The combined energy is pathetic – mostly single-digit values like 2, 3, or 6 – just nothing to work with.
The water temperature is a whopping 79°, which is more than 5° warmer than normal for this time of year – very unusual, like bathwater, but it won’t help the surf.
There is a slight uptick around Wednesday the 15th of July. Wednesday morning looks glassy with a little 3ft ENE swell, but the period is only 5 seconds, and by the afternoon it gets chopped up by onshore breeze. Still, the combined energy hits 49 in the morning – the highest we see – but that’s still weak (49). The swell direction (ENE) is off the optimum for Punta Prima (ESE), so it won’t wrap in well.
Thursday the 16th is tiny again, and the week after that offers nothing. The 19th of July Sunday afternoon shows a 4ft ENE swell with a 5-second period, but the wind is onshore at 12 mph and it’s still poor surf conditions. The combined energy is 86, which is still weak. No period over 8 seconds appears until the 20th, and even then, it’s only 8 seconds with onshore wind.
Bottom line: there are no standouts. Not a single day offers clean, rideable waves with good wind. For a spot like Punta Prima, which is inconsistent to begin with, this blank run is normal. It’s a beach setup with poor surf quality and onshore winds most days – honestly, this looks more like a kite-surfing window than a paddle-surfing one when the breeze picks up. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d leave the board in the car.
Rusty.
