Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Punta Prima over the coming weeks.
Honestly, the next ten days or so are a real struggle. We’re staring down a long, flat spell with barely a ripple to get excited about. The swell energy is next to nothing – we’re talking values as low as 0 to 9 in the combined energy stakes for the first week. It’s mostly tiny, weak windswell or just flat, glassy conditions. There are a few mornings with glassy water and clean surfaces, but with no wave height to speak of, it’s a total write-off for surfing. You’ll be looking at a long gap of almost no surf worth paddling for.
Things finally start to show a pulse on Saturday the 11th of July. The morning brings a bit of life with some east swell pushing in at about 4 ft, with a period of 5 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 70 (moderate wave energy), and with a light NNW wind making it glassy, the conditions will be clean. The swell direction from the east is a bit off the optimum for the spot which is ESE, but this is the first window where you might actually catch a few small, slow waves. It’s inconsistent here at Punta Prima, and this is a tricky spot to read, but for a beginner-friendly wave, this Saturday morning is your best bet.
The swell builds a little through Sunday the 12th of July. The morning shows 4 ft from the ENE with a 6-second period and combined energy of 181 (moderate wave energy). But it’s a cross-onshore wind from the NE, so the surface won't be perfect. The afternoon drops a bit to 4 ft but gets chopped up by stronger ESE winds. For a break with inconsistent waves and a reputation for being a beginner wave, that size isn’t too intimidating.
After that, it fades out again quickly. By Monday the 13th of July, we’re back down to 2 ft and dropping fast. The rest of the second week looks painfully small again, with energy values in the single digits or low tens and heights below 2 ft. There is a blip of cleaner cross-off wind on a few mornings, but without swell, it’s just a pretty view.
The absolute standout is the Saturday morning of the 11th of July. It’s not big, it’s not powerful, but it’s the only time the stars almost align with a clean, glassy surface and the most rideable waves on offer. Get on it early, because the crowds might be there given how rare a wave is in this stretch.
Keep your expectations low and your eyes peeled for any changes in the longer range.
Rusty.
