The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s talk about your Punta Prima surf outlook.
Straight up, the next 16 days are going to be a real struggle in the water at this spot. We’re looking at a long, drawn-out period of flat and messy conditions with very little to get excited about. Right from the start, from Sunday the 16th through the end of the month, there’s a lot of days where the waves are just too small or the wind is a problem. For the first week, from the 16th to the 22nd, we’ve got a big gap with basically no worthwhile waves. The swell energy is almost non-existent, with readings like 23 and 31 – that’s the combined energy of all swells (those are weak, low double-digit values). The water temp is sitting at a very unusual 85°F with a massive anomaly of 7°F, meaning it’s much warmer than normal for this time of year.
The first hint of something worth paddling for shows up on Sunday the 23rd. We see a 3ft swell from the ESE with a 6-second period and glassy conditions in the morning. Energy picks up to 61 (still moderate energy). It’s surfable, but it’s ordinary. The wind is glassy, which is clean, but the swell is small. Stick to the morning session.
Then there’s another little window on Monday the 24th morning. A 3ft ESE swell, 6-second period again, and a light offshore wind from the WNW. That’ll be clean and a touch better, but with combined energy at 63 (moderate). It’s barely a standout, but if you’re desperate, that morning is your best bet for a few fun ones on the longboard.
Honestly, the real winner in this whole outlook is setting up for the very last day, Monday, the 31st of August morning. It’s only a 2ft swell from the E with a 6-second period – not big, but the conditions are glassy with a light cross-onshore wind. The combined energy is a low 31 (weak), so it’s not going to be pumping, but if you can sneak in a dawn session it might be clean. That’s the only real highlight in the whole two weeks. For Punta Prima, with its inconsistent nature, it’s not unusual to have a blank run like this. The swell from the ESE and E isn’t perfect for this exposed beach break, and the period is short, so the waves will be a bit crumbly. Beginners will be fine with these small sizes.
We’ve also got a small pulse of 4ft swell on the 30th of August morning, with a combined energy of 185 (a solid moderate jump), but it’s coming with a slight cross-onshore wind, so it’ll be a bit bumpy.
Overall, keep your expectations low. The best chance for a clean wave is on the 31st of August morning, even if it’s small. For experts, there’s nothing worth writing home about.
Rusty.
