The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough run for Punta Prima. The entire 16-day outlook is a real struggle, with nothing that I’d call a proper surf session. The first solid wave of any size doesn't show up until the 9th of August, and even then, it’s a mess. Before that, we’re looking at days of tiny, poor surf. From the 1st up to the 9th, it’s mostly knee-high slop with energy readings barely hitting double digits, and the wind is often on it or cross-shore. The wait for anything worth paddling out for is a long one.
The only real bump in the whole run comes on Sunday the 9th of August. The swell jumps up to 5ft from the ENE with a period of 5 seconds, and the combined energy hits 98 (moderate). But here’s the killer – the wind is howling onshore from the ENE at 19 mph. That’s a fresh breeze and it’s going to churn the surface into a complete mess. The wave comment says "poor surf conditions," and with that wind, it’s more of a kite-surfing kind of day than a paddle-surfing one. The 10th of August morning has a waist-high 2ft ENE swell with an 8-second period and energy of 50 (moderate), but it’s still onshore wind. The rest of the days are just tiny, weak waves with light to moderate winds that never line up properly. The morning of the 11th, 12th, and 13th have glassy conditions, but the swell is only 1ft, so it’s a flat, pretty lake out there.
Water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no wetsuit drama, but there’s just no energy to work with. This spot is inconsistent, and this run proves it. It’s a blank spell, and we just have to hope the forecasts change for the better.
Rusty.
