The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with ya – the next 16 days are a tough watch for anyone wanting a proper surf. We’ve got a long, dry spell ahead with barely a bump to get excited about. The first viable surf window doesn’t even pop up until the tail end of the second week, so you’re looking at an 11-day gap with nothing worth paddling out for.

There’s just one spot on the menu: Punta Prima. It’s an exposed setup that needs an ESE swell to work, but the energy coming in is weak as dishwater – the combined swell energy stays below 100 the whole time (15, 7, 8, 7, and so on). The waves are tiny, mostly 1 ft to 2 ft, with short, weak periods of 4 to 6 seconds. It’s a beginner-friendly break but inconsistent, so you can’t rely on it. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual.

Through July 30th to August 3rd, you get glassy mornings with offshore or calm winds, but the swell is just too small to bother. Afternoons turn choppy with onshore breezes. This pattern holds all the way through to mid-August. The weekend of August 8th to 9th offers a few clean windows with light offshore wind and a 2 ft swell from the south, but the period is still short and weak (19 combined energy). It might look pretty, but it won’t give you much to push into.

The only faint glimmer is around August 12th and 13th (Wednesday and Thursday). On Wednesday, August 12th morning, the swell picks up to 3 ft from the east with a 6-second period, and combined energy hits 82 – still weak, but the biggest we’ve seen. The wind is a messy cross-onshore, so it’ll be choppy. Then on Thursday, August 13th morning, it goes glassy with a 3 ft swell from the ESE (44 energy) – that’s your best chance for a clean wave. Afternoon reverts to chop.

Honestly, there’s no standout here. If you’re desperate and have a log, the glassy Thursday morning on the 13th might give you a few ankle-biters, but don’t expect much. Crowds are likely at Punta Prima since it’s often busy, but with waves this small, even the lineup will be quiet. For paddle surfing, it’s a bust. A kite might get a look-in on those afternoon sea breezes, but that’s about it.

Forecasts can shift, so keep an eye on the horizon, but for now, leave the board in the shed.
