The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's be honest, this is a tough one to call. The long-range picture for Punta Prima is a bit of a flat spell, with the odd tiny window of promise that never really gets going. The water is a scorching 85°F with a massive anomaly of 7°F – that's much warmer than normal for this time of year, which is a weird feeling when the surf is this quiet.

We kick off Saturday, August 22nd, with absolute dross. A tiny 1.0ft swell from the SSW with a short, dumpy 4-second period and a combined energy of just 3 – basically nothing. The wind is onshore, so it's a complete write-off. The weekend just drags on with the same story: small, weak swells and poor conditions.

Monday the 24th morning offers a glimmer of hope with glassy conditions and a 2ft easterly swell, but the energy is still weak (24) and it's a poor surf. The combined energy finally climbs a bit into Tuesday morning August 25th, hitting 69 with a 3ft SSW swell and a 7-second period. The wind is a light cross-offshore, so it's clean. It's a "surfable but very ordinary" situation – the best of a bad lot, but hardly a standout.

We then hit another lull until Thursday morning, August 27th. The swell jumps to 4ft from the SSW with a 6-second period and the combined energy hits 190 – that's moderate energy. The wind is glassy, dead calm. For a moment, it looks like we have a window. But it's an inconsistent break, so you’ll be waiting for sets. The best call for the whole 16 days is this Thursday morning session. It's the only time we get a decent bump of energy with clean, glassy conditions. The swell is under 5ft, so it's fine for most surfers, but the inconsistency means you'll have to be patient.

After that, it's back to the same old story. The second week of the forecast, from the end of August into early September, is a bleak run of tiny, weak swells (1ft to 3ft) with onshore winds and combined energy rarely breaking 70. There's a glassy morning on September 4th and 5th, but the swell is so small (2ft) it's barely a ripple. The energy is basically non-existent. The whole period is a long stretch of flat to very poor conditions.

The best on offer is that Thursday, August 27th morning at Punta Prima. It's not a world-beater, but it's the only time the stars align with a clean, glassy 4ft groundswell. Don't expect a crowd, but don't expect a classic either.

Rusty.
