Well folks, ol' Rusty here with a look at what Punta Prima has cookin' over the next couple of weeks. I've got to be straight with you—this stretch is lookin' mighty quiet. The swell window just isn't cooperating, and we're staring down a long stretch of tiny, weak waves.
We kick off on Tuesday, July 7th, with nothing to write home about. A tiny 1ft SE swell shows up in the afternoon, but it's got a period of just 2 seconds and an onshore wind, so it's all chop and no hope. The combined energy is a measly 1 (one). That pattern pretty much sticks with us for days. There's a lot of mornings with glassy conditions and no surf at all, then afternoons with a bit of a bump but totally ruined by the wind. From July 8th through the 11th, it's the same sad story—flat mornings with barely a ripple, and afternoons serving up tiny 0.3ft to 1ft waves with short periods. You'll see a lot of "poor surf conditions" in the logs, and that's the truth. The weather is mostly clear, but the swell just isn't there.
We do get a little spike in "combined energy" around the 10th, hitting 14 and 16, but that's from a S swell that's only 2ft with a short 5 to 6 second period. It's still not enough to call it a surfable wave, especially with a light onshore wind. The entire first week and into the second is a bust. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so at least it won't be a shock when you put a toe in, but that's the only good news.
From July 12th through the 18th, we're in a holding pattern. The swell heights are in the gutter, mostly 0.7ft to 1ft, with periods often under 6 seconds. The "combined energy" values barely get out of single digits. There's a few mornings of glassy conditions on the 13th and 14th, but with waves that tiny, even glass can't work a miracle. The crowds are often at Punta Prima, but let's be real—nobody's going to be fighting for these scraps. It's an inconsistent spot, and this run proves it.
We end the period on July 22nd with more of the same. A clear morning with a 1ft E swell and a very weak 3 combined energy. It's clean, but there's nothing to surf.
So here's the bottom line: there are zero standout days in this 16-day window. If you are absolutely desperate, you could paddle out on the 13th or 14th in the morning for the glassiest, tiniest ankle-biters you've ever seen. But I wouldn't bother. The "best on offer" is a very weak nod to any morning between the 13th and 17th when the wind is light or glassy, giving you that rare clean surface, even if the waves are nonexistent. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer on a few of those afternoons with cross-shore wind, but even then, the swell is pathetic. Better to wait for the next system to roll through. Forecasts can change, but for now, it's a firm "don't bother."
Rusty.
