The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at the next 16 days for Punta Prima. I gotta be straight with you – the surf forecast is looking pretty bleak. This stretch is a flat spell that’ll test your patience. The only break in the mix is Punta Prima, and it’s an inconsistent one that rarely gets good. Right now the water is sitting at 81° – that’s a solid 5° warmer than normal for this time of year, so you’ll be sweating in your wettie if you even bother to paddle out.
We start off on Friday the 17th with nothing but small, weak swell and poor conditions. Saturday the 18th is just as dead – glassy morning but no wave energy at all. Sunday the 19th through the following week is more of the same: tiny scraps of swell, mostly from the wrong directions, and onshore wind messing up the surface. There’s a long stretch with basically zero surfable energy.
Now, towards the end of the window things try to change, but not in a good way. On Tuesday the 28th we see a bump in swell height to 4 ft from the NE, with moderate combined energy (136). But the wind is cross-on, so it’s messy. Then Wednesday the 29th morning goes glassy with a small 1 ft swell, but it’s short period (8s) and still marginal. Thursday the 30th pushes up to 4–5 ft from the east, but again cross-onshore and choppy.
The only moment that even hints at something better is Friday morning the 31st – 5 ft east swell with light cross-on wind, but the report says it’s marginal at best. Then Saturday the 1st of August morning comes in with a 7 ft ENE swell, and the wind is cross-on from NNE. The notes say wind and tide are favorable, but the swell is too big for this break – that’s expert territory only, and even then it might not line up right with Punta Prima’s optimum direction (ESE). Afternoon gets worse with onshore winds.
So bottom line: don’t get your hopes up. This is a classic dry spell for an area that doesn’t fire often. Could change, but right now it’s a waiting game. Keep the board in the bag.
