The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s cookin’ at Punta Prima for the next couple weeks.

Gotta be straight with you—it’s a flat spell. For the first week and a half, there’s almost nothing worth paddling out for. The swell is tiny and weak, with combined wave energy stuck in the low teens and single digits (6 to 40 range). That’s just no power. Most of the time, the wind is blowing onshore or cross-onshore, chopping up the water and making it a messy, frustrating session.

You’ll see a few cleaner windows—like Tuesday the 18th and Wednesday the 19th—with light offshore or glassy conditions. But the swell is only about 2 to 2 feet of weak, short-period stuff. Clean, sure, but you’d be surfing ripples. For an exposed beach setup, that’s just not going to get you a wave worth remembering.

The only sign of life is way out there, on Sunday, August 30th. The swell finally shows a pulse, with combined energy hitting 122 and wave heights around 5 feet from the ENE. The period is still short—6 seconds—and the wind swings onshore at 18 mph, which will mess up the surface. For experienced surfers, it might be the only rideable window in the whole 16 days. Beginners should sit this one out, as 5 feet of onshore chop isn’t beginner-friendly. And remember, this is still over a week away, so don’t book a trip around it just yet.

Water temp is pretty average for this time of year.

So the honest truth is, this is a tough outlook. The first 10 days are a total blank, and the only bump at the very end has wind against it. It’s a quiet period, and that’s just how it goes sometimes.

Keep your chin up, forecasts change.

Rusty.
