The Lowdown

Right then, let's talk about Mallorca. Truth be told, it's a pretty quiet stretch ahead for the island. The whole 16-day window is a lean one, with barely a whisper of proper swell. If you're desperate for a paddle, there are a few tiny windows, but you'll have to pick your moment very carefully. Let's call the first week a write-off for any real surf, with just fleeting, tiny pulses.

Now, for the only spot worth chatting about, Mallorca - Cala Mesquida. This is your classic beginner-friendly, fairly consistent little cove. It takes a north swell, and that’s what we’re waiting for.

The water is sitting at a very warm 84°, a full 6° above average for this time of year. That’s a very unusual anomaly, so you’ll be surfing in a bath.

Alright, let's get into the slim pickings. The first few days are a total bust – nothing but zeros across the board for the 1st to the 4th. We see a hint of life on the morning of the 7th of August (Friday) with a tiny 1ft from the NNE, a period of 5 seconds, but the combined energy is a weak (9). It’s glassy though, which is a major positive, so you might catch a few knee-high wobblers if you're desperate.

The 10th of August (Monday) afternoon sees the swell tick up slightly to 2ft from the NNE, period a short 4 seconds, with energy hitting a moderate (17). It’s onshore though, so it’ll be bumpy and not much fun.

Then things get interesting towards the second weekend. On the morning of the 15th of August (Saturday), we’ve got a light offshore S wind and a 2ft north swell with a 6-second period. The energy is a moderate (24), and conditions are clean. That’s your best bet, but it's still tiny.

The afternoon of the 15th is the true “standout” of the whole forecast, and that’s not saying much. You get a 3ft north swell, a period of 6 seconds, and energy building to a moderate (71). The wind is cross-offshore from the south at 16 mph, keeping it clean. For a cove this size and for the beginner crew, a 3-foot clean, lined-up north swell is as good as it gets here. It’s not powerful, but it’s the best we’ve got.

The 16th of August (Sunday) drops off again as the wind swings onshore and the swell fades. So, there you have it. A long, flat wait for one decent afternoon on the 15th. Pick that window, keep your expectations small, and you'll have a laugh.

Rusty.
