The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for Mallorca – Cala Ratjada.

Honestly, it’s a tough stretch ahead. We’re looking at a long, flat spell that runs for most of the next week and beyond. The water is sitting at a very warm 82°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, but that’s about the only highlight. For the first several days, from now through to the 17th of September, there is simply no swell at all. Zero. The ocean is basically asleep. It’s going to be glassy and clean at times, especially on the morning of the 14th and 15th with light SW winds, but with nothing to ride, that doesn’t matter.

We finally see a tiny pulse arrive on the morning of Friday the 18th – a weak 0.7ft ESE swell with a short period of 8 seconds. The energy is barely there, only measuring 6. That’s not something you’d paddle out for. The afternoon picks up a bit more height to 2ft, but the period drops to a horrible 3 seconds, and the wind is cross-onshore. It’s messy and weak.

Saturday the 19th offers a similar story: 1ft ESE swell, period around 9-10 seconds, but combined energy is still low at 20 or less. The wind is light, so it’ll be clean, but you’re looking at tiny, gutless waves.

Through the rest of the period into late September, there are a few more tiny pulses – 0.3ft to 1ft – but nothing that will get a surfer out of bed. The wind turns strong on the 27th and 28th, with near gale NNE winds gusting up to 34 mph, whipping up a bumpy, choppy mess. The swell does finally pick up a bit on the afternoon of the 27th, reaching 3ft from the NNE with a 6-second period and moderate energy of 55, but with those winds, it’s going to be a washing machine.

The best bet, if you can call it that, would be the morning of Saturday the 19th. It’s the only window where conditions are nearly glassy with a tiny, clean 1ft ESE swell. For a complete beginner on a foamie, there might be a dribble to practice on, but that’s it. There are no standouts here. This is a blank run that is pretty normal for a low-energy region like this. It tends not to stay this poor forever, but for now, the boards stay in the car.

Rusty.
