The Lowdown

Well, folks, it’s Rusty here, and I’ve gotta be straight with you. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for anyone wanting to get wet. There’s nothing on the horizon that’s worth getting excited about, and I’m not going to sugarcoat it. We’re looking at a real flat spell, a proper blank run that’s pretty normal for this stretch of coast.

The water is a balmy 77°, which is a couple of degrees warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least it’ll be nice for a swim.

The first sign of any real surf won’t arrive until Saturday, August 15th – that’s over a week away. Through the 5th to the 14th, it’s all under 3ft and mostly junk. Mornings are often clean, like on the 8th, 10th, and 12th, but the swell is just too weak to do anything with. The afternoons are usually blown out by onshore breezes. Honestly, it’s not worth paddling out.

That Saturday the 15th morning is the only thing that even gets a mention. There’s a little bump of 3ft at 5 seconds from the W, but it’s still cross-onshore and choppy. The energy is weak, and it’s just not going to be any good. The winds are up to 16 mph, so it’s going to be a mess.

The rest of the window fades away into nothing. The swell drops back down to 1ft and smaller, and the winds stay onshore or cross. There’s just nothing here for a surfer. The setup at Playa de Regla looks far more interesting for the kite crew than us paddle surfers during this stretch.

So, keep your board in the shed, maybe check back in a couple of weeks. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a no-go. We’ll be lucky to get a wave by the 20th.

Rusty, out.
