The Lowdown

Gutted, folks. I’ve been staring at the charts for the next couple of weeks, and it’s a tough one to write up. The honest truth is, there’s nothing on the cards that gets me fired up. We’re looking at a long, flat spell with zero decent surf options in the entire 16-day window for Pedra do Meio.

The first week is a total write-off. From the 5th right through to the 10th, we’ve got weak, short-period windswell pushing in from the east, but it’s messy. The wind is all over the shop—cross, cross-on, cross-off—and it’s just chopping up an already weak 4ft to 5ft of swell. The energy is weak, with readings between 96 and 171 (moderate at best), and the period is a dismal 6 seconds. It’s poor surf conditions every single session. If you’re a kite surfer, the cross-shore winds and lumpy sea might be your thing, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a no-go.

Then we hit a real lull. The 11th and 12th see the swell drop even further, down to 4ft and the energy falling to 74. There are a couple of cleaner windows in the mornings with a cross-off breeze, but with that short, weak swell, it’s just not doing anything. It’s flat and frustrating.

The pattern continues through the middle of the month. The 13th through the 18th is more of the same—waist-high slop, with the energy creeping back up to the 142–235 range, but the period is still stuck at 6 seconds and the winds keep spoiling any chance of it cleaning up. The afternoons are particularly poor with the onshore breeze kicking in. Honestly, it’s a long, boring grind.

We finally see a pulse of energy arrive on the 19th and 20th, with the swell bumping up to 6ft and 6ft. The energy readings jump to 262 and 338, which is a step in the right direction. There’s even a clean-ish morning on the 19th with a cross-off wind. But the period is only 7 seconds, so it’s still a short, weak, wind-driven swell. The morning of the 19th is the only thing that gets a “marginal” nod, but it’s still not worth paddling out for. The 20th morning is clean but the swell is on the rise and the period is still short.

So, there it is. A blank run. The forecast is locked in for the next week, but the long-range stuff is more of a promise than a certainty. It’s the kind of pattern that can’t stay this bad for long—the ocean always has a way of waking up. But for now, I’d say leave the boards in the car and wait for the next proper swell. As for the water temp, it’s about average for this time of year, so at least you won’t be freezing if you decide to go for a swim instead.

Rusty.
