The Lowdown

Alright crew, Rusty here, and I’m not gonna sugarcoat it. The next 16 days at Palm Beach Jetties are a total bust for paddle surfing. We’re looking at a long stretch of tiny, weak, short-period windswell, and the wind is just about always in the wrong spot.

The swell is tiny, mostly going from 0.7ft to 3ft, with periods that hardly ever get above 5 seconds, so it’s just wind chop. The combined energy is weak, topping out at 147 (moderate energy) on the Friday afternoon of the 7th, but it’s still just messy, poor surf. The water temp is 86° with a 0.9° anomaly, so it’s about average for the time of year.

The wind is the problem. It’s almost always onshore, cross-onshore, or just bumpy. There’s a few little windows with "on" wind, like Thursday afternoon the 6th with 9 mph from the east, but the swell is only 3ft and 5 seconds – nothing to ride. The best morning of the whole run is Wednesday the 12th with a light breeze from the SE at 6 mph, but the swell is just 0.7ft. That’s not surfable.

From August 6th all the way to August 21st, every single session is marked as "poor surf conditions." There’s no standout day, no hidden gem. The swell direction is mostly from the east or southeast, which is fine for the break, but the size and period just aren’t there. Even the bigger swells like 3ft on Friday the 7th are so short-period and choppy they’re a waste of time.

If you’re a kite surfer, that consistent onshore breeze might get you out, but for a surfboard, this is a dead run. It’s one of those spells where the ocean just says no. Forecasts can always change, but for now, I’d find something else to do.

Rusty.
