The Lowdown

Alright, the boys, let me be straight with you. I’ve looked at the charts for the next 16 days, and honestly, it’s a tough one. There’s just not much on the cards for Nice. We’ve got a long stretch of weak, inconsistent energy and mostly poor surf conditions. The first bit of anything that might be worth a paddle is a good week away, so brace for a quiet spell.

Let’s get into it. For the first week, from now through the end of July, it’s pretty flat. The swell is tiny, barely a ripple, with wave heights from 0.3ft to 1ft and periods under 7 seconds. The combined energy is weak, reading between 1 and 8, so no real push. Winds are light and variable, a few glassy mornings, but with no swell to work with, it’s just a flat lake. There’s a big gap with no surf at all from Thursday the 30th of July through the weekend.

We finally see a pulse arrive on Saturday the 1st of August. The swell picks up a touch, 1.6ft from the SW with a short 4-second period, but the combined energy is still only 9. It’s poor. The wind is cross-off shore in the morning, which is alright, but the waves are just too weak and messy to call it a go.

The real standout, if you can call it that, comes much later. On Saturday the 8th of August, the morning shows the best energy we’ll see all forecast. The swell is 2.3ft from the SW, with a 4-second period, and the combined energy finally climbs to 24 (moderate). It’s still not huge, but it’s the most we’ve got. The wind is forecast to be glassy, which is a major positive for clean conditions. This is the only window that even looks like a surfable little bump. The name of the break is Nice. It’s an exposed, inconsistent spot that often has crowds, so if you’re heading out that morning, expect company. The water temperature is about average for the time of year here.

After that, the energy drops back into the weak zone for the rest of the run. The 9th of August has a 1ft swell with 5 of energy, and the 10th shows 1.3ft with 8 of energy. It’s just a flat, long stretch of tiny waves.

So, to sum it up: the first week is dead. The only faint glimmer of hope is the morning of Saturday the 8th of August. It’s a small, clean, glassy wave, but it’s the best we’ve got. For everything else, you’re better off leaving the board in the car. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a tough outlook.
