The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – it’s a tough watch for the next couple of weeks at Morfa Mawr. The whole 16-day window is pretty much a write-off for any decent surf. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with nothing worth paddling out for.

The first proper day we can even talk about swell is Thursday the 6th of August, and even then it’s grim. That morning you’ve got a tiny 3ft swell from the west, but with a short, weak period of 6 seconds and a cross-shore wind. The combined energy is a measly 64, and the wave comment says it all: poor surf conditions. It doesn’t get any better in the afternoon, with the wind swinging cross-on and making things choppy.

Friday the 7th through to Monday the 11th of August is a total dead zone. Swell heights are barely a ripple – 0.7ft to 1ft – and the energy is in the single digits. You’d be better off swimming. There’s a brief moment of glassy conditions on the morning of Monday the 10th, but with a 0.7ft swell, it’s a lake, not a wave.

We creep up a little on Wednesday the 12th of August, with a 1ft morning swell and a longer period of 10 seconds, but it’s still cross-on and weak (39 energy). The afternoon bumps up to 2ft (68 energy), but it’s choppy and messy. The best of a bad bunch might be the morning of Thursday the 13th of August – a 3ft, 9-second swell from the WSW with light onshore wind and energy hitting 98. It’s still labelled poor surf, but it’s the most we’ll see for a while.

The weekend of the 15th and 16th of August actually sees the biggest swell of the forecast, with 3ft on Saturday afternoon and energy hitting 137. But it’s accompanied by a moderate cross-on breeze and a short 8-second period, so it’s going to be a lumpy, unappealing mess. Not one for the beginner, and honestly, not worth the drive for anyone.

The final week sees a few moments of cleaner conditions, like the cross-offshore winds on Monday the 17th of August morning and the glassy morning of Tuesday the 18th of August, but the swell is tiny – 2ft and 1ft respectively. The energy is pitiful.

There are no standouts here. No highlights. The only break on offer is Morfa Mawr, a beginner-friendly spot that’s fairly consistent, but it’s consistently poor. The combined swell energy never reaches a level that would offer a proper wave, and the wind is almost always on it. For the whole 16 days, there’s not a single recommendation above a zero. It’s a total flat spell. For a spot that’s fairly exposed, that’s unusual, but it happens. Keep an eye on the charts, because it can’t stay this bad forever.

Rusty, signing off.
