The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Dumps (Brandon Bay).
Right off the bat, I gotta be honest with you – the next week and a half is pretty grim. There’s a real dry spell. From now until around the 24th of July, we’re looking at tiny, weak swell and a lot of cross or cross-off breezes. The wave energy is pathetic, hovering around 15 to 91 (weak), and the swell heights are mostly below 3 ft. It’s just not worth paddling out for. You’ll be bobbing around on nothing. That’s a solid nine-day gap with no real recommendations.
The water temp is sitting at 64°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least you won’t freeze while you’re waiting for waves that won’t come.
Now, things start to look a bit more interesting right around the end of the month. The standout session is hands down Sunday the 26th of July, in the morning. The wind is forecast to be glassy, absolute perfection. The swell is a clean 4 ft from the NW with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 291 (moderate). That is the best on offer in this whole outlook. Dumps is a fairly exposed spot, and with a NW direction, it should be working. Just be aware that crowds are sometimes an issue here, so get there early.
But the real big dog is sneaking up on us. Wednesday the 29th of July, in the morning – that’s a full 13 days out, so keep it in the back of your mind, but it’s a cracker. Glassy conditions again, with a 7 ft WNW swell and a period of 10 seconds. The energy reading is a massive 1181 (strong). That’s proper groundswell energy. Now, at 7 ft, this is getting into expert territory, and because it’s a long-period swell, it’s going to be powerful and might like the shape of the bay here. The morning is the pick, because the afternoon gets a bit cross-on.
The 30th of July has size, but it’s a mess. Fresh cross-shore winds at 19 mph and rain will make it lumpy. The 31st of July drops off in quality as well. So, your two windows are the 26th morning for a fun, clean day, and the 29th morning for a serious, powerful session if you’ve got the skill.
Rusty.
