The Lowdown
Alright, locals, let’s break down the next couple of weeks for Dumps (Brandon Bay). The first few days are a total bust – Sunday 19th and Monday 20th offer nothing but tiny, messy slop. You’re looking at a two‑day dry spell before anything shows up.
Tuesday 21st July finally gives us a tiny pulse: 1ft swell from the west with a 10‑second period, but only 56 units of energy. The wind is a light cross‑off out of the NNE, keeping the surface clean, but the waves are barely surfable – very ordinary. If you’re starved, you could get wet, but don’t expect much.
Wednesday 22nd through Friday 24th stay small and mostly poor – onshore breezes and chop keep the quality low. Swell under 2ft, energy in the teens and twenties. Not worth the drive.
The weekend of 25th‑26th brings a big jump in size, but the wind turns sour. Saturday afternoon: 5ft from the NW with 11‑second period and 493 energy – but it’s cross‑onshore and choppy. Sunday: 6ft WNW on the morning, 8ft by Monday morning – but the wind is onshore or cross‑onshore, blowing it all out. Energy jumps into the hundreds (627, 508, 1161), but it’s a mess. Honestly, with that much breeze, it’s more of a kite‑surfing zone than a paddle spot.
Now for the real winner: Friday 31st July morning. Swell from the WNW at 6ft, 10‑second period, and 692 units of energy – solid, moderate power. The wind is a light cross‑off from the ESE, keeping the surface glassy and clean. The forecast says “expect very good surf conditions,” and I’m all in. Dumps is fairly exposed to the NW, so this WNW swell fits nicely. The break is fairly consistent and intermediate level – not just for pros. Crowds are possible (it says “sometimes”), but with conditions this good, you’ll have company. The 10‑second period isn’t super long, but it’s enough for a nice shape. This is the standout of the whole forecast.
Friday afternoon holds up at 7ft with cross‑off wind, but the wind is stronger (15 mph), so morning is your best bet.
After that, Saturday 1st August drops to 5ft with cross‑shore wind, and Sunday 2nd gets hammered by onshore gusts of 22‑28 mph, trashing what’s left. Monday 3rd is a write‑off with rain and howling wind.
Bottom line: the first week is mostly a washout, but Friday 31st July morning is your golden window – clean, solid waves, and a real treat. Don’t miss it.
