The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on offer for the Brandon Bay stretch.
To be straight with you, the next week and a half looks pretty grim. We’ve got a long stretch of poor surf with messy onshore winds at Dumps. No standout days that will make you drop everything and go. The first proper window you’d even consider looking at is the last few days of the month and into September, but it comes with a big caveat.
Things start to change around the morning of the 27th of August. Swell size jumps big, but it’s way too much for this break – we're talking 15 ft from the WNW with a very long period (12 seconds) and combined wave energy going through the roof at 6307. That’s expert only territory, and even then, with a strong W wind swinging onshore, it’s a washing machine. Not recommended.
There’s another spike on the 31st of August. Monday morning sees a 16 ft swell from the WNW, period hitting 14 seconds, and the combined energy is absolutely pumping at 10201. The wind is cross-off from the SSE, which would mean clean conditions, but the size is extreme. Same story – only for experts, and even then you’d need to be comfortable with a very heavy localised setup. The swell direction (NW) is what we want, but size over 8 ft puts this firmly in the too-big-for-most category.
The 1st of September morning sees a drop to 5 ft from the WNW with a clean cross-off wind from the NNE, but wind speeds are up at 25 mph. It’ll be clean but blown out by the strong breeze. Combined energy is 1020 – moderate, but the numbers don’t lie; it won’t be quality.
Honestly, there’s nothing here that screams “go now.” The best of a bad bunch would be the morning of the 31st of August, but only if you’re an expert paddling a big board and know the break well. For everyone else, this is a long wait.
Rusty.
