The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's talk about what's on the cards for the Dumps (Brandon Bay).
Water temps are sitting at 64°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you can leave the thickest wetsuit at home.
Right, the honest truth is we've got a rough start to this forecast period. From now through to the end of Sunday, the 23rd of August, it's pretty grim. Thursday and Friday have solid cross-shore winds at 22 to 22 mph, and the swell is messy with poor surf conditions. Saturday and Sunday drop right off in size, with tiny waves barely 0.7ft to 2ft and not enough energy to speak of.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Monday, the 24th of August. The morning shows a clean 4ft swell from the NW with a decent 11-second period, a light cross-off breeze from the ESE, and the combined energy sitting at a solid 412 (moderate energy). The wave comment says "expect good surf conditions," and that's what we like to hear. The afternoon stays clean but the energy drops a bit. This is a solid window for the intermediate crew.
After that, we get a couple of ordinary days on Tuesday the 25th with small, clean but weak 3ft waves, and then Wednesday the 26th morning brings another clean 4ft from the W with a 9-second period and 277 energy. It's surfable, but the quality isn't quite as high as the Monday window.
Now, if you're an expert looking for a big hit, you'll want to keep an eye on Friday the 28th of August. The forecast shows a massive 13ft swell from the WNW in the morning combined with a 9-second period and a huge 2876 energy reading. That's strong to very strong energy. But here's the catch – the wind is a fresh cross-onshore at 19 mph, with poor surf conditions flagged. It's going to be a lumpy, challenging beast. The afternoon drops to 10ft but the wind picks up even more. This is one for the heavy-water crew only, and even then, it's going to be a battle.
The rest of the first week of September is a bit of a mixed bag. There's a clean 7ft from the NNW on Thursday the 3rd of September morning with 531 energy and a light cross-off breeze, but the wind swings around quickly. Otherwise, it's mostly small, clean but weak, or blown out.
So, the standout pick for the whole period is Monday morning, the 24th of August. Clean 4ft NW swell, offshore breeze, decent energy. That's the one to circle on the calendar. The big Friday the 28th is a spectacle for the experts but not a clean, user-friendly day.
For the most part, this is a pretty quiet run for the Dumps, but that Monday window is worth chasing.
Rusty.
