The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's chew the fat on what's cookin' at the Dumps for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the first week is a total dud. From Friday the 17th right through, the waves are tiny and the conditions are mostly rubbish. The water is a warm 64°F, which is a solid 4°F toastier than normal for this time of year, but that's about the only highlight.
Things finally start to stir around Saturday the 25th of July. We get a northwest swell pushing 3ft, with a period stretching out to 11 seconds – that's a good sign. The combined energy hits a solid 218 (moderate) on Saturday morning, and 271 (moderate) in the afternoon. The problem is the wind: it's from the southwest, so it's cross-on and lumpy. It's rideable, but far from clean.
Then it gets a bit rowdy. The end of July into August brings a lot more size, but a lot more wind too. On Monday the 27th of July, the afternoon shows a 6ft northwest swell with a 13-second period and a combined energy of 1164 (strong). That's a serious amount of water. But the southwest wind is howling, making it a cross-onshore mess. With that much size and that wind, it's strictly for the experts, and honestly, it looks more like a kite-surfing session than a paddle one.
The only real window of hope is the morning of Thursday the 30th of July. We've got a 4ft northwest swell with a 10-second period, and the wind switches to a light southeasterly, giving us clean, cross-off conditions. The combined energy is still moderate at 216. It's the only clean morning in the whole forecast, but it's still just "surfable waves, very ordinary conditions." It's not a classic, it's just the best of a bad bunch.
For the full 16 days, there's no single day that's a guaranteed winner. The swell energy is there, but the wind is almost always a problem. The Dumps can be a gem, but it needs a clean window that just isn't showing up. If you're jonesing, that Thursday the 30th morning is your best shot, but don't expect perfection.
Rusty.
