Alright, Rusty here again. Let's talk about what's happening in Brandon Bay.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: the next week or so is looking pretty flat and sad. We've got a real quiet spell on our hands. There's a gap of several days with not much to get excited about at all.
Things start to stir on the morning of Tuesday, July 7th, but to be honest, it's not worth paddling out for. We've got a small 4ft swell from the WNW with a period of 9 seconds, but it's coming in with a cross-on breeze from the WSW. The water is a touch warmer than normal at 62°F, but the combined swell energy is a weak 267, and the conditions are just marginal. That pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the week and into the weekend. The swell stays small, around 3ft to 4ft, and the wind is mostly cross-onshore or just plain messy. Thursday morning the 9th is another marginal one with a 4ft W swell and a cross-on breeze. Friday morning the 10th looks cleaner with a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNE, but the swell has dropped to 3ft from the WNW with an 11-second period, so the combined energy is still only 284. Not worth rushing for.
Saturday and Sunday, the 11th and 12th, the swell really drops off to under 3ft, and the combined energy falls below 100 – it's just too weak. The rest of the second week looks equally grim, with tiny waves and very ordinary conditions. There's a day on Tuesday the 14th that shows a bit of offshore wind from the E and a small 2ft W swell, but the energy is still low at 88. It's not gonna get the heart pumping.
Now, hang in there, because on Wednesday the 22nd of July, things finally start to look interesting. It's a long way out, so take it with a grain of salt, but the morning session could be worth a look. Dumps (Brandon Bay) is the only spot, and it's fairly exposed to a 5ft swell from the NW with a 7-second period. That combined energy jumps right up to 274, and with a light cross-offshore breeze from the NE, the morning should be clean. The crowd situation is listed as 'sometimes' busy, so you might have to share it. This is your best bet in the whole 16 days – a proper chest-to-shoulder high NW swell with clean conditions. The afternoon gets a bit messy with a strong cross-shore wind, so make it a dawn patrol mission. For the whole run, that's the one to circle on the calendar.
Rusty, signing off.
