The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Dumps (Brandon Bay).
Right off the bat, I gotta be honest with you – the next week or so is looking pretty grim. There's a lot of onshore and cross-shore wind messing things up, and the swell is either too small or too junky. We're looking at a real dry spell for quality waves. The water is sitting at 64°, which is a touch warmer than we usually see this time of year, so at least you won't be freezing while you're staring at the chop.
Things start to get interesting around Monday the 24th. The morning session sees a little pulse of long-period groundswell filling in, with a 4ft swell from the NW and a period of 12 seconds. The wind will be a light cross-offshore breeze out of the ESE, so the surface should be clean. The combined wave energy is moderate at 399. It's not massive, but it's the first real glimmer of hope. The best session in the whole forecast is probably the Thursday morning of the 27th. We've got a solid 6ft swell from the WNW, a clean 9-second period, and a light cross-offshore breeze from the NE. That's your standout window for a proper surf. The energy is moderate at 475, and with the clean conditions, it should be a fun morning.
After that, it's a bit of a mixed bag again. Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th are back to onshore winds and messy conditions, with waves getting up to 8ft but blown out. The long-range stuff into the first week of September is still looking rough, with a lot of strong onshore winds and poor surf, so I wouldn't bank on it.
So, to sum it up: the best bet is the morning of Thursday, 27th August. The Monday morning of the 24th is a decent alternative if you're keen to get wet after the long wait. Everything else is a write-off for now.
Rusty.
