The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s shaping up for Dumps (Brandon Bay). I’ve got a good long look ahead, and I’ll be straight with you—it’s a mixed bag, with a few definite windows of opportunity if you’re patient.
The overall pattern is pretty quiet to start, with a proper lull in the middle. There’s a solid pulse of energy coming in the second week, but it gets a bit wild towards the end, so we’ll take it as it comes.
Right now, the first real chance to get wet is Monday the 24th of August. We’ve got a modest 4ft swell rolling in from the NW, and the period is a nice long 11 seconds, which means proper groundswell energy. The wind is light and offshore from the ESE, keeping things clean. The combined energy is moderate (412), and that offshore breeze is the key here—it’s going to make for some tidy lines. This is your best bet in the near term.
Then we hit a dry spell. From Tuesday the 25th through to the end of the month, the surf drops right off. There are a few weak, small waves around, but with periods under 8 seconds and cross or cross-onshore winds, it’s flat and messy. Definitely a time to wax the longboard and just paddle, or leave the board in the car. That’s a solid 5 or 6 days of nothing doing.
Now, Thursday the 27th of August shows a bit more size—6ft to 7ft from the WNW, with a 10-second period and moderate energy (708 to 904). But the wind is on it, cross-onshore, and the quality drops. It’s big enough to be interesting, but not clean enough to call it a standout. For the experienced crew, it might be worth a look, but beginners will want to sit this one out.
The next real standout is way down the line, Tuesday the 1st of September. The afternoon session is looking like a gem. The swell is a clean 5ft from the WSW, period is short at 7 seconds, but the wind goes glassy—absolutely flat calm. The combined energy is moderate (333), and with glassy conditions, Dumps could be super fun on the right tide. This is the one to circle on the calendar. Fair warning, this is a long-range call, so the forecast might shift, but right now it’s the best looking window.
Wednesday the 2nd of September is a whole different story. We’re looking at a massive 15ft swell from the west with a 10 to 11-second period—that’s very strong energy (5252). The wind is offshore, so the waves will be clean, but this is a beast. For Dumps, that’s expert territory only. The wave energy is immense, and it’s going to be a washing machine. If you’re not a pro, stay on the beach for this one. The swell drops back to 7ft on Thursday the 3rd, still with clean offshore wind, but that’s still a big, powerful wave.
Finally, Friday the 4th of September offers a return to more manageable size. 5ft from the west with a 10-second period, light offshore wind from the NE, and clean conditions. The energy is moderate (501). This is another solid option for the intermediate surfer, especially if you missed the glassy day earlier in the week. The water temperature is sitting at 64°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you might not need the thickest wetsuit.
Remember, Dumps is fairly consistent when there’s swell, but it can get crowded sometimes. Get out there early on those good days.
Rusty, out.
