The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Dumps.
To be straight with you, it’s a quiet start. The first few days aren’t worth wetting a suit for – we’re looking at Friday the 21st through to Sunday the 23rd with hardly a ripple worth mentioning. The wind is all over the place and the swell is just not showing up. It’s a frustrating gap, but that’s how it goes sometimes.
Now, things finally start to turn early next week. Monday the 24th morning is your first real glimpse of hope. We’ve got a 4ft NW groundswell pushing in with an 11-second period – that’s proper energy (331). The wind is a light offshore from the ESE, making for clean, lined-up waves at Dumps. It’s a fairly consistent spot, so you should find a few. The water temp is sitting at 64°, which is a touch warmer than average for this time of year, so it’s not going to bite.
Tuesday the 25th keeps the clean conditions going with a morning offshore from the ESE at 12 mph. The swell drops a little to 3ft from the W, but with moderate energy (171) and clean faces, it’s still surfable if you’re keen. By Wednesday the 26th the swell fades right out again – not much to get excited about.
The real standout window arrives on Thursday the 27th, but there’s a catch. The morning sees a solid 7ft NW swell with a short 9-second period and very high energy (695). The problem is the wind – it’s a moderate cross-onshore from the NW, which is going to chop things up. This is more one for the experts only, as that size and short period will be messy. The energy keeps pumping through Friday the 28th with a 7ft morning and 8ft afternoon, both from the WNW, and again the wind is onshore. Honestly, if that onshore keeps up, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than a clean paddle session.
The last real highlight to note is Monday the 31st. We get a 7ft W swell in the morning with fairly high energy (862), but the wind is a light cross-onshore from the NW. It’s marginal, and the waves will be lumpy. Not a day for beginners.
After that, the first week of September drops right off again – small swell and poor winds until the data ends.
If you’ve got to pick one session, Monday the 24th morning at Dumps is your best bet for clean, surfable waves. The 4ft NW groundswell, light offshore wind, and good period should give you some fun, lined-up sets. Just don’t expect perfection long range – the second week looks quiet and uncertain.
Rusty.
