Table - best surf conditions forecast for Dumps (Brandon Bay) over the next 16 days.
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the next 16 days for Dumps (Brandon Bay). Let’s be straight with you, it’s a pretty grim run for most of it, but there’s a little window of hope if you’re patient.
The water is sitting at 62°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a small win. But the surf? For the first week and a half, it’s mostly a story of small, weak waves and messy wind. The combined swell energy is barely a whisper, with values like 184 on Saturday, dropping to piddly numbers like 24 and 30 in the days that follow. It’s just not doing much.
Saturday the 11th morning is the best of a bad bunch to start, with a 3 ft swell from the WNW and a 9-second period, and the wind is a cross-off from the NNE at 9 mph, keeping it clean. But it’s ordinary, and the afternoon goes cross and messy. Then we hit a long dry spell. From Sunday the 12th all the way through to Tuesday the 22nd, the conditions are mostly poor. The swell is tiny, often under 3 ft, and the wind is almost never your friend, swinging onshore or cross-onshore, knocking the shape out of everything. There’s a morning on Tuesday the 14th with a little 2 ft swell and offshore wind from the ENE at 9 mph, which looks clean, but it’s just too small to get excited about.
The real story is the big pulse that rolls in around Wednesday the 23rd morning. That’s your standout. After days of junk, we get a solid 6 ft swell from the WNW with a 9-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 529 (moderate energy). The wind is a light cross-off from the NE at 6 mph, and the data says it’s “expect good surf conditions.” This is the moment. The swell direction is a good match for the optimum NW, and it’s clean. That morning is the one to circle on your calendar. After that, the afternoon gets a bit cross, and the following days get messy again with onshore winds and bigger, choppier swell that’s too blown out.
So, to be honest, there’s a massive gap of nearly two weeks of poor surf before that one morning on the 23rd. If you can wait, hit the Wednesday morning of the 23rd for the best chance. Otherwise, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
