The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, looking at the surf for Mossies (Brandon Bay). I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough stretch. The water’s a fair bit toastier than usual for this time of year, sitting at 64°F which is a good 4°F warmer than normal, so you won’t be needing the thickest rubber, but that’s about the only thing that’s come up aces.
We’re looking at a real slow start. From Sunday the 19th through to Friday the 24th of July, it’s a write-off. The swell’s tiny, the wind’s mostly cross or cross-on, and the energy readings are weak as – we’re talking values as low as 25 to 100 (weak wave energy). The period on those little bumps is short and choppy, so don’t even bother paddling out.
Then things get a bit more interesting. Around Saturday the 25th, the swell starts to build from the NW, hitting 6ft by the afternoon, but the wind swings cross-on and the energy jumps to 794 (moderate wave energy). The surf is still messy, though. The real tease comes Sunday the 26th through to Tuesday the 28th. We’ve got solid NW swell pushing 7ft to 8ft, with a period of 9 to 11 seconds, and the energy gets up there – 719 to 1519 (moderate to strong wave energy). The wind is light or cross-off at times, especially on the Tuesday morning the 28th with a light SSW breeze, which is a clean option. But here’s the thing: Mossies is a reef break, and with that size swell, it’s gonna be a beast. Over 8ft on Tuesday afternoon, it’s only for experts. The south-west wind on Tuesday afternoon will put a cross-chop through it, though.
If I had to pick the best of a bad lot, I’d be looking at Tuesday morning the 28th of July. The swell is 7ft from the NW, period 10 seconds, and the wind is light cross-off from the SSW. The energy is 979 (moderate wave energy), and it’s the cleanest it’s gonna get. It’s still big, so this is one for the experienced crew only. After that, Wednesday the 29th sees the wind whip up to 19 mph from the SSW, and by Thursday the 30th, it’s a lumpy, onshore mess. The run fades out into the first week of August with small, weak swells.
Honestly, for the whole 16 days, there’s no standout session for the average punter. The one window on the 28th is promising but serious. For the rest, it’s a waiting game. Keep an eye on the charts, but don’t drag your gear down for nothing.
Rusty.
