The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with the long-range look for the Merewether area. I’ve been staring at the charts, and I gotta be honest, the next couple of weeks are a real mixed bag. There’s not a lot of love coming our way, but there are a couple of windows if you're patient and hungry.
We’re kicking off the forecast period with a very slow start. The good news is the water temp is sitting at around 64°F, which is pretty much average for this time of year, so at least the water doesn’t have that extra bite.
The first real whisper of hope doesn’t arrive until Monday the 31st of August. The morning session is the standout of the entire outlook. We’re looking at a clean, 3ft southerly swell wrapping in. The wind is light offshore from the north-northwest, which is going to keep the faces smooth as glass. Combined swell energy is moderate at 253, and the 9-second period isn’t world-class, but for late winter, it’s about as good as it gets around here. This is your best shot.
Through the first week of September, we’re back to small, choppy, or windy conditions. A bit of a cruel tease.
Then we get a longer wait with mostly poor conditions until we hit Thursday the 3rd of September. The morning here has some potential, but you need to be an experienced surfer. A 5ft SSE swell (357 combined energy) is on the table, with a solid 25 km/h offshore wind from the northwest. That offshore breeze will hold the faces open, but 5ft with that much power can be a handful for beginners. It'll be a bit raw but hollow.
Thursday afternoon of the same day is another session to note. The swell drops to 3ft from the south, but the period stretches out to 11 seconds and the energy is still 313. A light west-northwest cross-offshore wind keeps things clean. It won’t be as big as the morning, but it will have better shape and more push through the line.
After that, we drift back into small, messy, or onshore slop. Saturday the 5th and Sunday the 6th of September look like a complete write-off with fresh onshores and energy dropping into the weak zone (99 and 33 respectively). That’s it for the window. A few fleeting moments, but nothing that’s going to stick around.
