G’day, Rusty here. We’ve got a long look ahead for Merewether - Ladies, and honestly, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The first week is mostly a write-off with messy, blown-out conditions, but the second half of the window holds some real potential, especially for those who can wait. The water temp is sitting around 66°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
Right from Sunday the 5th, it’s a tough start. We’ve got a solid 3.0m swell coming from the south with a period of 11 seconds, but the wind is a fresh 30 km/h cross-onshore, and the wave energy is moderate (2222). The surf is just lumpy and poor – not worth a paddle.
Monday the 6th and Tuesday the 7th are much the same story. Swells hold around 2.5m to 3.5m from the SSE, periods around 10-11 seconds, but the wind is either onshore or cross-onshore at 25-30 km/h. The energy is moderate to strong (1495 to 4468), but it’s all chop and no shape. The water temp anomaly data isn’t available for these days, but the conditions are consistently poor.
Wednesday the 8th sees a slight improvement in the morning with a 2.5m swell from the SE (11 sec) and a gentle cross-shore breeze, but it’s still only a 2/10 and described as marginal. The afternoon turns back to messy cross-onshore.
Thursday the 9th morning is our first real glimmer. Swell drops to 2.1m from the SE (10 sec), and we get a light cross-offshore breeze from the SW at 10 km/h. The energy is moderate (885), and the call is “clean” with very good conditions. This is a solid option for an intermediate surfer, but it’s not a standout.
Friday the 10th morning is similar – 1.6m SE swell, cross-off wind, clean. The energy drops a bit (646), but it’s a fun, manageable wave.
Saturday the 11th sees a drop in size to 1.3m from the SE (9 sec), but now we have a clean offshore wind from the NW at 15 km/h. The energy is low (334), but the conditions are gentle and clean. Crowds can be a factor here sometimes, but it should be a nice little session.
Sunday the 12th is small – 0.9m from the ESE (11 sec) with a moderate offshore wind. The energy is weak (244), and it’s surfable but nothing to write home about. The same holds through Monday and Tuesday, with swells dropping below 0.5m.
Now here’s where things get interesting. Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th see a messy spike of wind and chop – 3.5m from the S on Thursday morning with strong cross-shore winds, but it’s lumpy and not for paddling. That setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The real standout is Friday the 17th afternoon. We get a 3.0m swell from the SSE with a very long period of 16 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy (5633). The wind is a light cross-onshore, but the conditions are marginal with small wind ripples. This is a big, powerful swell, and with that period, it’s going to be best on the reef here. It’s one for experienced surfers only, and it’s nearly two weeks out, so keep an eye on it.
Saturday the 18th is another exceptional day. A 3.0m SE swell (13 sec) with a moderate offshore wind from the NW. The energy is strong (2522), and the call is excellent for experienced surfers. This is clean, lined-up, and powerful.
Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th keep the quality going. Sunday morning offers 1.8m from the SE (12 sec) with gentle offshore wind and clean conditions. Monday morning bumps up to 2.4m from the S (9 sec) with gentle offshore wind and excellent conditions for experienced surfers.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a bust. The real bright spots are Thursday 9th and Friday 10th for smaller, clean waves, and the absolute standouts are Friday 17th afternoon and Saturday 18th for powerful, offshore groundswell. Keep the 17th and 18th circled – that’s where the magic could happen, but it’s a long-range call so don’t lock it in yet.
Stay frothing,
Rusty
