Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, let’s talk about what’s cooking at Merewether - Ladies. The next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag, with a rough start and then a big clean-up later on. Water temp’s sitting at about 66°, which is pretty normal for this time of year.
We are starting off rough on Tuesday the 7th. There’s a big 12ft swell coming in from the SSE, but it’s getting hammered by strong SSW and S winds right onshore, making it a choppy, lumpy mess. The wave energy is huge (4728 in the morning, 2586 in the afternoon), but it’s not surfable for a paddle. If you’ve got a kite, maybe, but for a surfboard? Forget it.
Wednesday the 8th doesn’t improve much. The swell drops to 8ft from the SE, but the wind is still onshore in the morning and cross-onshore in the afternoon. It’s marginal at best.
Here’s your first real chance: Thursday the 9th morning. The swell is down to a friendly 5ft from the ESE, and we get a light W cross-off wind that cleans it right up. The energy is moderate (892). It’s not a big day, but it’s clean and rideable. That’s the one to go for. The afternoon gets a little messy, so get in early.
Friday the 10th and Saturday the 11th are small and weak. Friday has 5ft with a light cross-shore, and Saturday pulls in a light offshore from the NW, but the swell is only 4ft. The energy is low (309-326). You’ll need a longboard.
Sunday the 12th is tiny – under 3ft with a moderate offshore wind. Clean, but barely any power. Energy is at 132.
Then we hit a major lull. From Monday the 13th right through to the morning of Saturday the 18th, the swell is flat or very small. It’s a solid 5-day gap with nearly nothing to ride.
Things turn around Saturday the 18th afternoon. We get a 3ft swell from the SSE, but the period stretches out to 12 seconds – proper groundswell. The wind goes light offshore from the NNW, making it clean. Energy climbs to 221. This is a good, solid afternoon session.
Sunday the 19th is the best day of the outlook. The swell is a consistent 3ft to 3ft from the SSE with a 10-second period, but the wind swings to a solid offshore WNW and NW. Clean all day, moderate energy (220-241). This is your weekend winner.
And finally, looking way out to Tuesday the 21st of July, we’ve got a big pulse of swell. The morning shows 15ft from the SSW, and the afternoon goes to 15ft from the south with a 12-second period. The energy is massive – 6305 in the morning and a massive 9160 in the afternoon. This is heavy, serious surf. The wind is offshore, so it’ll be clean, but only for experts. The following Wednesday the 22nd morning is still big (7ft), but the afternoon turns glassy with 6ft from the SSE, which is a much better call for the average surfer.
So here’s the takeaway: the first week is mostly a washout. Hit Thursday morning the 9th for the best of it. Then Sunday the 19th is your top pick for clean, fun waves. And keep your eyes on that Tuesday the 21st for some serious size if you’ve got the skills.
