Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Righto, let’s have a look at what’s comin’ for Merewether - Ladies. It’s a reef setup, very consistent, exposed to swell. The water temp is runnin’ about 66°, with a tiny anomaly of just 0.5°, so pretty average for this time of year. The optimum swell direction for this spot is ESE.
First up, we’ve got a bit of a rough start. Monday arvo and Tuesday are lookin’ average at best. Monday arvo sees 8ft of SSE swell, period 10 seconds, but with a 25 km/h SSE onshore wind – that’s messy and combined energy is a hefty 1427 (moderate wave energy). Tuesday ain’t much better, with 10ft to 12ft of SSE/SE swell and strong cross-onshore winds.
Wednesday morning hangs in there with 8ft SE swell, period 11 seconds, but still a cross-onshore breeze. The combined energy is 1782 (moderate wave energy), but it’s still a marginal call. Wednesday arvo the energy jumps to 2917 (strong wave energy), but the wind and conditions keep it poor.
Now, Thursday morning, 9th July, that’s where we start seein’ somethin’ special. The swell drops to 5ft, but it’s from the ESE, period 11 seconds – nice long period groundswell. Wind is WSW at 5 km/h, cross-offshore, and the conditions are clean with a combined energy of 899 (moderate wave energy). Then Thursday arvo turns glassy, with 6ft SE swell, period 10 seconds, and combined energy of 660. That’s good clean surf. Friday morning holds similar goodness: 5ft SE swell, period 9 seconds, light west wind, clean conditions, energy at 530.
Saturday morning, 11th July, sees offshore NW wind at 15 km/h over 4ft SE swell, period 9 seconds, clean – combined energy 333 (weak). That’s a fun little window if you want a break from the bigger stuff. Sunday and Monday see the swell fade and the wind picks up, so we go into a flat spell.
The standout here is definitely that run from Thursday morning 9th July through Saturday morning 11th July. The pick of the bunch? I’d say Thursday arvo, 9th July – glassy conditions, 6ft SE swell, period 10 seconds, combined energy 660. That’s clean, lined up, and should be a real pleasure. The break can get crowded sometimes, but on a Thursday, you might luck out.
Then we’ve got a period from Sunday 13th July into the middle of the week where the swell is small – under 3ft – and the wind is mostly offshore but the energy is low, with combined energy values dropping as low as 24 and 48. Not much on offer there.
Now, lookin’ ahead to Friday morning, 17th July – that’s a ripper in the making for experienced surfers. We’ve got 7ft of S swell, period 11 seconds, light NNE cross-offshore wind, and combined energy of 1065 (moderate wave energy) – excellent surf conditions. The swell is over 8ft? No, it’s 7ft, so big enough for experienced crew but still manageable for strong intermediates.
Friday arvo of that day sees the wind swing onshore, so the morning is the go. Saturday morning, 18th July, has clean 5ft SSE swell, period 10 seconds, offshore wind, combined energy 492 – a good option. Sunday morning, 19th July, holds 5ft SE swell with a lovely 12-second period, light offshore wind, combined energy 811 – very good surf.
That Monday arvo, 20th July, has 4ft S swell with a moderate offshore wind and combined energy 244 – not huge but clean.
Then the final standout is Tuesday morning, 21st July – that’s over a week away – with a big 12ft S swell, period 10 seconds, cross-offshore wind, and combined energy of 3706 (strong wave energy). That’s a solid, powerful swell but it’s a marginal call for Merewether - Ladies. With that size and a 10-second period, it’ll be a wild one. The morning is cleaner than the arvo, which has 10ft and 2025 energy. Honesty, those two days on the 21st are for experts only – 12ft is over 8ft, so it’s a big, heavy reef wave.
So, overall: the best on offer is Thursday arvo 9th July for that glassy, clean 6ft groundswell. The second standout is Friday morning 17th July for a solid 7ft S swell with clean offshore conditions. The long-range stuff on the 21st July is promising but less certain – keep an eye on that one if you’re keen on big surf.
