The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s talk about what’s cooking.
First up, Merewether - Ladies. This is a reef break that’s very consistent and open to the swell, so it’s always got something going on. The water temp is around 64°, which is about average for this time of year.
Sunday morning starts off with a bit of a mixed bag. There’s some swell at 4ft from the south, with a period of 10 seconds, so there’s some energy (292). But the wind is coming from the ENE at 6 mph, making it cross-shore, so the surface is a bit rippled. It’s surfable, but not a standout. Sunday afternoon goes downhill with the wind picking up and turning cross-onshore, making it choppy.
Monday morning looks better. The wind swings around to a light northerly, which is cross-offshore, and with a clean 3ft south swell at 10 seconds (219), it’s a nice little session. The water will be clean. Monday afternoon, though, the wind cranks up from the NE at 16 mph, turning it into a chop-fest. Forget that.
Tuesday morning is small – only 2ft from the south, period at 9 seconds (99). The wind is light offshore from the NNW, so it’s clean, but it’s not going to set the world on fire. Tuesday afternoon is the first real standout. The wind drops to glassy from the WSW at 3 mph, and there’s a 4ft swell from the ENE, but with a short period of 7 seconds (231). That short period means the waves won’t have much push, but the glassy conditions will make it look pretty.
Wednesday is a write-off. Onshore winds and rain showers make it messy, with tiny swell.
Thursday morning is the pick of the first week. The wind is glassy from the SE at 3 mph, and there’s a solid 5ft south swell with an 8-second period (302). That’s a decent amount of energy, and with glassy conditions, it’ll be clean. This is a good one. Thursday afternoon gets choppy again.
Friday morning has a light cross-offshore breeze and a 4ft south swell at 10 seconds (283). Clean waves. Friday afternoon turns onshore again.
Saturday and Sunday look small and average, with onshore winds and little energy. The 30th of August Sunday morning has a tiny 2ft glassy swell from the SSE, but it’s not going to get the heart racing.
Now, looking into the first week of September, there’s a bit of a lull. Swell drops right off, and it’s mostly small, weak, and onshore. The 31st of August Monday has some longer period swell – 18 seconds – but it’s only 2ft to 2ft from the SSE, so it’s a very long period groundswell that’s going to be very straight at this beach/reef setup. Not ideal. The 1st of September Tuesday morning looks better: a light offshore from the NW, 2ft from the south with a 15-second period (280). That long period will mean nice shaped waves, but small. It’s a clean session if you’re patient.
From the 2nd of September onward, it’s mostly tiny, with occasional offshore winds but no real swell to work with. There’s a stretch from the 2nd to the 7th where the swell barely gets above 2ft, and the energy is weak. The 7th of September Monday morning has a 16 mph offshore wind from the NW, but the swell is only 2ft from the south with a 7-second period (78). It’s clean but very small.
So, the standouts? Tuesday afternoon the 25th of August is a glassy, small-wave session for the shortboarders who don’t mind a bit of a gutless swell. But the real one to circle is Thursday morning the 27th of August: 5ft of south swell, glassy, clean, and decent energy. That’s the one.
Rusty.
