The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on offer at Merewether - Ladies over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a bit of a flat spell to get through. For the next week or so, it’s mostly tiny, weak stuff with poor conditions. The water temp is sitting at 63°, which is about a degree and a half colder than normal for this time of year – a bit nippy, so you’ll want the thick rubber.
The first real chance of anything decent doesn’t show up until Monday the 31st of August. The morning will see the swell start to build, with offshore wind from the WNW at 19 mph. It’ll be a solid 5 ft from the south with a 10-second period, but it’s only a marginal call then. The standout is Monday afternoon. The wind drops to a gentle 9 mph offshore from the WNW, and the south swell bumps up to 6 ft, still with that 10-second period. The energy really ramps up here (755), and with clean, offshore conditions, this is your best bet for the whole run. It’s a reef break, so it handles that south swell well, and the size is perfect for intermediates. It can get busy here though, so expect some company.
Then Tuesday the 1st of September brings the biggest pulse. We’re looking at an 12 ft south swell with an 11-second period in the morning. That’s a lot of water moving, with energy reading 4337, so this is for experienced surfers only. Winds are light and cross-off from the WSW, so the shape should be there, but it’s big. The afternoon swings onshore from the SE and the quality drops off.
After that, things get messy again with onshore winds and dropping swell through Wednesday the 2nd.
So, to keep it simple: ride out the flat and ordinary stuff this week. The real window is Monday afternoon the 31st of August – that’s your pick of the fortnight. Tuesday the 1st is for the crew who can handle serious size.
Rusty.
