The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down. We’re looking at Merewether - Ladies (New South Wales), a solid reef break that’s wide open to the ESE. Water temp is 66°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year.
The first few days are a total bust. Saturday the 18th has a 5ft ESE windswell with a short 7-second period and a stiff onshore wind – just a mess. Sunday the 19th bumps up to 6ft from the east, but that onshore wind is still ruining it. There’s plenty of energy but nowhere to go.
Monday morning the 20th is the clear standout. Swell drops to a clean 5ft from the east, period stretches to 11 seconds, and the wind goes glassy – dead calm. The energy is moderate (719), but the conditions will make it feel like a million bucks. It’s an intermediate spot, and with that glass, it’s going to be perfect. Expect some company though; crowds are possible.
After Monday, it fades. Tuesday the 21st morning has a smaller 4ft east swell with a light cross-offshore breeze – clean but small. Wednesday the 22nd drops to 3ft, and it’s pretty ordinary.
Thursday the 23rd switches to a south swell, but the afternoon gets hammered by a 15 mph cross-onshore wind and a 5ft messy wave. Friday the 24th brings the biggest raw swell of the run – 8ft from the south, with a strong energy reading of 1148 – but it’s cross-shore and chunky. Only for experienced surfers. The period is only 10 seconds, so it won’t be the smoothest.
Saturday the 25th morning is a nice little reset: 4ft from the south, glassy, clean. It’s a 9-second period, so not a ton of push, but it’s a good backup.
From Sunday the 26th onwards, it’s a slow bleed. We’re talking 1ft to 3ft dregs with weak energy. There’s a weird spike on Thursday the 30th afternoon – 2ft from the SSE but with a very long 18-second period – but the onshore wind kills it dead.
The start of August isn’t much better. Friday the 31st has a 7ft ESE windswell but it’s blown out by a 19 mph onshore. Saturday the 1st of August is still messy. Sunday the 2nd of August morning gives you a clean 3ft easterly with light cross-offshore wind – surfable, but tiny.
The best call is Monday morning July 20th: 5ft east swell, 11-second period, glassy. That’s the one to circle. Second pick is Saturday morning July 25th: 4ft south swell, glassy, clean. The rest of the 16 days is mostly a long stretch of small or blown-out junk.
Rusty.
