The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the line for Merewether - Ladies. We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but the second half of the run has some real promise.
The first few days are a bit of a write-off, to be honest. Sunday the 23rd is a non-starter with a messy onshore wind and a cross-chop making a mess of things. Monday the 24th is a little cleaner in the morning with a light cross-offshore breeze, but it’s only 3ft of south swell, so it’s a small, ordinary day. Tuesday the 25th morning sees a bump in size to 5ft from the northeast but with a short, weak 7-second period, so expect a bit of a crumbly wall. The wind is light and cross-off, so it’ll be clean, but it’s not a standout.
The real story starts to build toward the end of the month. Now, Thursday the 27th has a 4ft south swell with a clean offshore wind in the morning, but the tide or something has it looking marginal – not a total loss, but not a cracker.
Keep your eyes on Friday the 28th morning. That’s the first real highlight. It’s only 3ft, but it’s a clean, 12-second south groundswell rolling in with a light cross-offshore breeze. The wave energy is moderate (422), and the conditions will be clean. It’s not huge, but it’s a beautiful, workable wave for an intermediate.
Now, the absolute standout of the whole 16-day window lands on Monday the 31st of August. That morning is a gem. The swell is 4ft from the SSE, but the period is a massive 17 seconds – that’s a serious, long-period groundswell. The combined energy is strong (890), and the wind is glassy. Absolutely zero wind. It’s going to be a stunning morning at the reef. This is the one you circle on the calendar. Just be aware, with such a long period, it’ll have those long lulls between sets, but the shape and power will be there.
The first week of September looks a bit more ordinary. Tuesday the 1st has a clean 3ft swell with a moderate offshore wind, which is fine, and Friday the 4th morning has a nice 4ft, 12-second south swell with a light cross-offshore wind (energy of 427), offering another solid session. The following days are smaller and more inconsistent, with a few days of very small surf (2ft-2ft) and a few clean windows, but nothing to get too worked up about.
Overall, it’s a slow start, then a few gems. The 28th of August is a nice, clean day, but the 31st of August is the one we’re all waiting for. Get out there for that glassy, long-period groundswell.
Rusty.
