Alright, grab your wettie, let’s talk about what’s cooking for Merewether - Ladies (New South Wales). It’s been a bit quiet to start, but there's some real potential brewin’ in the longer run.
The water temp is sitting around 67°F, which is about average for the time of year, nothing wild to report there.
Right now, we're looking at a slow start. Friday the 3rd and Saturday the 4th only offer tiny, weak waves - think around 1ft to 2ft with some cleanish conditions here and there, but honestly, hardly enough to get excited over. The swell energy is super low (18-22 range), so you’re better off keeping the board in the car.
Sunday the 5th and Monday the 6th are messy. A big pulse of southerly swell pushes in, with 8ft to 10ft of swell, but the wind is a choppy cross-onshore. The energy does spike big time - 1565 to 2436 in the combined energy reading - but it’s blown out. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, to be honest.
Tuesday the 7th is still lumpy and not worth paddling out, but keep your eye on Wednesday morning the 8th. That’s our first standout. The wind swings light offshore from the west-northwest at just 3 mph, glassing up a solid 7ft swell from the southeast. The energy is strong (1044) and the period is a decent 10 seconds, offering some punch. The wave quality comment says it’s excellent for experienced surfers - and that’s no throwaway line. This is when you want to be at Merewether - Ladies. It’s a very consistent reef, so you can trust there’ll be waves, and a few others might be around (crowds are possible here), but the clean conditions will make it worth the paddle.
The rest of the first week and into the second week is a mixed bag. Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th have 5ft to 4ft of clean, cross-off swell, but the energy drops off. Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th are tiny and weak, barely worth a mention.
Then, a gap of a few quiet days rolls in from the 14th to the 17th - strong winds and small, messy surf. Nothing to see there.
Now, here’s the long-range treat: Saturday morning the 18th of July. Another standout. A solid 6ft south-southwest groundswell with a 9-second period and light west-southwest cross-off wind at 9 mph. The water will be clean, and the combined energy is pumping at 1055. That afternoon though, the swell jacks up to 10ft from the south with a longer 12-second period, but the wind swings onshore from the east, making it marginal and better left for the experts. Still, the morning session that day looks fantastic for an intermediate or experienced surfer ready for some juice.
Best of the outlook: Wednesday morning the 8th (big, clean, punchy) and Saturday morning the 18th (solid groundswell, glassy lines). Don’t sleep on those windows.
Rusty.
