The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Right, let’s break down what’s on the menu. We’ve got a slow start, so don’t rush out the door. On Thursday afternoon the 16th of July, there’s a 5.6ft S swell rolling in, but it’s only an 8 second period and that cross-on easterly breeze won’t do it any favors. Water temp is 65.1°, about average for the year. The combined energy is moderate at 456, but it’s not worth getting wet for.
That sets up a few days of nothing. Friday and Saturday the 17th and 18th are a bust with strong onshore SE winds and weak junk. Sunday the 19th sees a 5.6ft E swell with a better 10 second period, but the onshore wind ruins it. There’s a real gap here of a few days with nothing worth paddling for.
Then Monday morning the 20th of July is the first proper highlight. Merewether – Ladies (a reef break) is the spot. We’ve got a 4.9ft E swell with a good 10 second period, and the wind is glassy – dead calm from the NNE. That’s going to be buttery smooth. The combined energy is a solid moderate 550, and the swell hits its optimum ESE direction for this exposed break. This is the best of the early run, but it can get crowded here, so be ready for company. Good for intermediates, and at 4.9ft it’s not too big for most.
Tuesday the 21st is still decent with a 3.6ft E swell and a clean offshore from the NNW in the morning, but it’s smaller and turns cross-on later. Wednesday and Thursday drop right off into waist-high slop with weak energy (values down to 73).
The next pulse comes on Friday the 24th of July. Afternoon brings a 6.2ft S swell with a 10 second period, but the cross-on wind is messy. Saturday the 25th has a 4.9ft S swell with a long 12 second period – that’s proper groundswell – but strong onshore winds ruin the arvo. Mark down Monday the 27th of July – afternoon delivers a 5.9ft S swell, 10 second period, and clean light wind from the NNW for very good conditions. Energy is a strong 668. That’s a standout.
The last big one is Thursday the 30th of July. Morning shows a 5.9ft S swell, 9 second period, a clean offshore cross-off from the WSW, and the energy is pumping at 965 – that’s powerful, strong surf. This is for experienced surfers only, as it’s well over 5ft and pushing into expert territory. Friday the 31st morning is also very good with a 5.6ft S swell and clean conditions, but the afternoon gets chopped up by a strong cross-shore. That’s the run. Plan your sessions around those windows.
