The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s take a look at what’s coming up for Merewether – Ladies.
Overall, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty average for this spot, to be honest. There are a few moments where it cleans up and there’s some energy, but there’s also a lot of onshore junk to sift through. The first real standout is a long way off, so we’ll have to be patient.
We’ve got a gap right at the start. The first bit of surf that’s even worth talking about doesn’t show up until Monday the 24th of August. The morning has a tiny 3 ft south swell with a 10-second period and a light cross-offshore wind, so it’ll be clean but pretty weak – combined wave energy is only 147. It’s surfable, but nothing to get excited about.
Tuesday the 25th is similar, with a 2 ft south swell and clean conditions in the morning, but the energy drops right off to 69. Tuesday afternoon turns into poor onshore junk. Wednesday the 26th has the first real pulse of size in the morning: 5 ft from the north-east with an 8-second period, clean with a cross-offshore wind, and the combined energy is 419 – that’s a decent moderate kick. That’s probably the best of the first week, but the swell direction is NE, which isn’t the optimum ESE for this reef, so it won’t be at its absolute best.
From Thursday the 27th through to Saturday the 30th, it’s mostly small and messy with cross-onshore winds and poor surf conditions. The morning of Saturday the 29th is worth a mention because it’s glassy – a rare moment of flat calm with a 2 ft swell – but the energy is only 100, so it’s tiny and clean, great for a log if you’re desperate.
Then there’s a big gap of a few days with nothing recommended. The next real highlight doesn’t arrive until Tuesday the 1st of September in the afternoon. That’s when it gets interesting: a 6 ft south swell, but the period is a short 7 seconds, and it’s glassy. The combined energy jumps to 402, and conditions are described as “expect good surf conditions.” That’s a solid window for the intermediate surfer, but keep in mind that 6 ft is getting towards the top end for beginners.
The absolute standout, the one you want to circle on the calendar, is Friday the 4th of September. Morning session brings an 12 ft swell from the SSE with an 8-second period, combined energy of 1426 – that’s strong to very strong wave energy. The wind is light offshore from the NNW, so it will be clean. That is excellent surf, but it is strictly for experienced surfers only. Anything over 8 ft is expert territory. The afternoon drops to 10 ft, still clean with offshore wind and energy at 1122. This is the best on offer for the whole outlook, but it’s a long way out and the swell direction is SSE, not the optimum ESE, so keep that in mind.
After that, Saturday the 5th of September gets blown out by strong cross-onshore winds, and Sunday the 6th is marginal.
For the first break mentioned, the water temperature anomaly isn’t provided in the data, so I can’t say whether it’s warmer or cooler than average right now.
So, to sum it up: wait for Wednesday the 26th morning for a fun little clean push, or hold out for Tuesday the 1st of September afternoon for a glassy, decent-sized south swell. But the real call to action is Friday the 4th of September – that’s the one for the crew who can handle it.
Stay keen,
Rusty
