The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty, and I've had a good look at the next few weeks for Merewether - Ladies. Strap in, it's a bit of a slow burn, but there's a proper little window of quality waiting for us.
Right now, the swell is pretty weak, with a combined energy of just 64 (weak energy). We're looking at small, 3ft ESE swell at a short 7-second period, but the wind is off the land from the NW, keeping things clean. The water's sitting at 63°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year. A few of these mornings over the next week are clean and small, but the wave energy is just too low to get excited about.
Around the 23rd of August (Sunday morning), we get a spike in energy. The combined energy jumps to 111 (moderate wave energy). There's a 2ft S swell with a 10-second period, and the wind is *glass* – dead calm from the SW. That's a rare treat for clean lines. The morning of the 24th is also clean with a light NNW breeze, with a 3ft S swell (10 seconds) and energy of 182 (moderate wave energy). These are your best bets for the first week if you're desperate for a paddle, but the size is still pretty average.
The real standout, the one you’ve been waiting for, is the morning of Wednesday, the 2nd of September. The combined energy hits 370 (strong wave energy). We're looking at a solid 4ft E swell, with a clean 10-second period, and a light WNW cross-offshore breeze. The report says "expect good surf conditions," and that's no lie. The Thursday morning (3rd of September) is a carbon copy; 4ft E swell, 11-second period, offshore NNW wind, and energy of 316 (strong wave energy). This is the pick of the entire forecast. The offshore wind and the decent groundswell period will have the reef working nicely. Just be aware, with the crowds noted as "sometimes" at this spot, you might have a few mates out there for this one.
The rest of the second week trails off again, with smaller, cleaner morning swells but nothing that will get your heart rate up like that 2nd and 3rd of September.
Rusty.
