Table - best surf conditions forecast for Merewether - Ladies over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer at Merewether - Ladies over the next couple of weeks.
First up, the water temp is sitting at 66°, which is right about average for this time of year, so nothing freaky going on there.
Honestly, it’s a pretty grim start. There’s a real flat spell kicking things off. For Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th, we’re looking at tiny, weak dribble – like 0.7ft at best from the south, with moderate offshore winds, but there’s just no energy to work with (combined energy only 26). It’s a write-off for a paddle.
We don’t get anything worth mentioning until Wednesday the 15th, but it’s a messy one. A bigger pulse of 8ft to 8ft south swell shows up, and the energy jumps right up (1210 on Wednesday morning, 2096 Wednesday arvo). That’s a lot of power, but the wind is a cross-shore mess, turning cross-onshore, making it choppy and poor. This is too big for beginners (over 5ft) and with the wind-ruffled surface, it’s really only for the experienced crew looking for a challenge. The 8ft on Wednesday afternoon is borderline expert-only territory.
Thursday the 16th keeps the size up around 7ft to 7ft, but again, the wind is from the south and southwest, cross to cross-onshore, and the period drops to 8 seconds. The energy is still moderate (575 to 860), but the quality is poor. Friday the 17th drops back to 3ft, but it’s a short-period 7-second south swell with onshore winds – not great.
The weekend of the 18th and 19th sees a pulse of 5ft swell from the east-southeast, with a period of 6 to 9 seconds. The energy is moderate (288 to 535), but the wind is onshore from the southeast, so it’ll be bumpy. It’s surfable for someone, but nothing to write home about.
Things finally start to look up on Tuesday the 21st. The swell settles to 4ft from the east, with a 10-second period, and the wind goes glassy in the morning and afternoon. The energy is moderate (302), and the forecast says “expect good surf conditions.” This is the standout of the whole outlook. Clean, glassy conditions on a consistent reef break. The optimum swell direction here is ESE, and we’re getting east, which is close enough to work well. Crowds are “sometimes” here, so you might have a few mates out, but it’s a quality wave.
Wednesday the 22nd morning keeps the same vibe: 4ft east swell, 9 seconds, light north wind (cross-offshore), clean. That’s another good session. The arvo turns a bit onshore, so get it early.
The rest of the window fades out. Thursday the 23rd has some clean-ish cross-offshore morning options with 3ft east swell, then it gets a bit mixed. The following days from the 24th through to the 28th are mostly smaller, choppy, or onshore, with occasional clean moments on the 27th and 28th mornings when the wind goes offshore (west-northwest), but the swell is down to 2ft to 3ft. Those are small but clean.
So, if you’re keen, the clear winner is Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd morning. Glassy, clean, waist-to-chest high east swell with decent period. That’s the time to be in the water.
Rusty.
