The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. We’ve got a bit of a mixed bag over the next couple of weeks, but there’s some fun to be had if you pick your moments.
The overall pattern starts off with a bit of a slow start, but we’ve got a window of clean conditions on Monday morning. The first real call is for Merewether - Ladies on Monday morning, August 24. It’s a reef setup, and it’s very consistent, so you know it’ll be doing its thing. We’ve got a clean 3ft swell out of the south, with a solid 10-second period. The wind is a light northerly, keeping it cross-off and clean. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there. The combined energy is moderate (218), so there’s a bit of push to it. It’s a good, clean start to the week.
Moving into Tuesday morning, August 25, the swell picks up a little to 5ft, but it’s coming from the northeast with a short 7-second period, so it’s a bit windswelly and jumbled. The wind is light again, so it’ll be surfable, but it’s not the best shape. The south swell from Monday has faded.
Wednesday morning, August 26, is small and clean with a 2ft east-northeast swell, but it’s weak in energy (93). Nothing to get excited about.
Thursday morning, August 27, things get a bit more interesting with a 5ft south swell and a 9-second period. The wind is light and onshore, though, so it’s going to be a bit messy. The energy is moderate (332), but the conditions aren’t doing it any favours.
Now, here’s the highlight of the first week. Friday morning, August 28, is a standout. We’ve got a clean 4ft south swell with a 10-second period, and the wind is a light north-northeasterly, cross-off, making for some nice lines. The energy is solid (283). This is the one to aim for – clean, consistent, and the reef will be working.
Saturday morning, August 29, is another cracker. It’s glassy, with a light northerly breeze and a 4ft south-southeast swell, 10-second period. The energy is still good (242). If you’re free, get out there early before the sea breeze stuffs it up in the afternoon. This is your best bet of the whole run.
After that, the surf drops right off. Sunday, August 30, through to Tuesday, September 1, is small and messy, with weak energy and onshore winds. There’s a bit of a lull.
Wednesday, September 2, is clean but tiny – 1ft with a 11-second period, but the energy is weak (77). Not worth getting wet for.
Thursday, September 3, and Friday, September 4, are a bit more promising for the second week. The wind goes offshore from the northwest, so the conditions are clean, but the swell is small, around 2ft. The energy is weak. It’s not a standout, but if you’re desperate, it’s clean.
The second week’s best option looks like Saturday, September 5, but it’s a bit of a tease. The swell jumps up with a south-southeast groundswell, 16-second period, and the energy is very strong (705). But the swell is only 3ft, and the wind is cross-onshore from the east-southeast, so it’s going to be choppy. The long period will make it a bit wonky at the beach, but the reef might handle it.
Sunday, September 6, morning is a real long-range hope. A clean 3ft south-southeast swell with a 13-second period and light cross-off northerly winds. The energy is solid (307). It’s a week and a half out, so don’t book the day off work yet, but it’s a promising sign.
After that, Monday, September 7, and Tuesday, September 8, are tiny and mostly blown out. The run fizzles out.
Overall, the standout windows are Friday morning, August 28, and Saturday morning, August 29. If you can only paddle out once, make it Saturday the 29th – that glassy morning is going to be special.
Rusty.
