The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's have a look at what's on offer for the next couple of weeks around Merewether - Ladies.
Right off the bat, we've got a pretty grim start with no real surf to speak of on Sunday. The water is sitting at 66° with a temperature anomaly of 0.9°, which is about average for the time of year, so the only thing that's normal is the water temp. The swell is there on Sunday, but it's onshore and messy, so don't bother.
Monday morning, the 20th of July, is only marginal. There's a 5.2ft swell from the east with a period of 11 seconds, giving a combined wave energy of 749 (moderate), but the wind is cross-onshore, making it a bit of a washout. The afternoon is similar. Not worth paddling out for.
Tuesday morning, the 21st of July, sees a drop in swell to 3.6ft from the east, but the wind turns cross-offshore and light. The energy is down to 319 (weak), but it's clean. It's a small, glassy morning, but the energy is low.
Wednesday, the 22nd of July, is tiny. Swell drops to 2.3ft from the ENE with a period of 9 seconds and a combined energy of just 106 (weak). The morning wind is offshore from the NW at 12 mph, which is clean, but there's almost no push. It's a knee-high day for the longboarders or a rest day.
Thursday, the 23rd, is a write-off. The morning is flat with a 1.6ft swell, and the afternoon sees a shift to a 3.3ft south swell with a short period of 7 seconds and energy of 115 (weak). The wind is clean, but the waves are junk.
Now, Friday the 24th of July looks like things are starting to turn. The morning brings a 5.2ft south swell with a period of 9 seconds, giving a combined energy of 426 (moderate). The wind is cross-offshore from the WNW at 9 mph, and it's clean. The afternoon is even better with a 4.3ft south swell, offshore wind from the NW at 12 mph, and clean conditions. This is a solid session if you're gagging for a wave.
Saturday, the 25th of July, is a standout. The morning has a 3.3ft south swell, but the period jumps to 13 seconds, which is a proper groundswell. The combined energy is 534 (moderate), but the wind is offshore from the WNW at 12 mph, making it clean. The period is long, so it'll be better on the point or reef, but it's a beautiful morning. The afternoon holds a 3.3ft south swell with a 14-second period, energy of 610 (moderate), and cross-offshore wind. It's still clean, but the tide might be a factor. This is the pick of the first week.
Sunday, the 26th, and Monday, the 27th, are on the back of that. Sunday has a 4.3ft to 4.6ft south swell with an 11-second period, energy in the 390 to 435 range (moderate), and cross-offshore winds. It's clean and fun. Monday, the 27th, gets a bit more size at 6.6ft from the south with a 10-second period, but the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-offshore, so it's a bit bumpy and blown out. The energy is 851 (moderate to strong), but the quality is marginal.
Now, the real action kicks off on Tuesday, the 28th of July. The morning session is a beauty: a 6.6ft south swell with a 13
