The Lowdown
Alright guys, Rusty here. Let’s break down the next couple of weeks.
It’s a slow start, no doubt about it. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak, and pretty boring surf. The first time you might even want to paddle out is the morning of Friday the 17th, but it’s a 3ft NE windswell with a short 6 second period, so it’s gonna be bumpy and ordinary. The energy is weak (97). It’s clean because of the wind, but it’s not going to be any kind of gem.
The weekend of the 18th and 19th is a little better. Saturday morning, the 18th, the swell is 4ft from the NE, still short period at 6 seconds, and the energy is a moderate 128. The wind is glassy, which is a huge plus for clean conditions, but that short period means the waves will be soft and lack shape. Sunday morning, the 19th, is similar: 4ft NE with glassy wind, but still just a windswell.
We hit a lull again until the morning of Wednesday the 23rd. This is where it gets real. The swell is 4ft from the NE, but the period stretches to 9 seconds, giving it some real punch. The energy hits 245 – solid moderate. The wind is light cross-off, keeping the surface clean. This is the first sign of decent surf. The afternoon of the 23rd is the top pick for the first week: 6ft from the NE, with glassy, calm conditions. The energy is strong at 283. That’s a proper, powerful, clean wave. For beginners, 6ft is a bit heavy at this exposed reef.
The morning of Saturday the 25th is another one to circle. The surf is 4ft from the NE, period at 8 seconds, and the energy is strong again at 263. The wind is glassy, so it’s gonna be clean. Sunday the 26th holds similar conditions: 4ft NE swell, an 8 second period, and energy in the 240-270 range. The wind is light and cross-off, keeping it clean and fun. The days from the 23rd to the 26th are the real standouts – consistent, clean, and with enough energy to make the paddle out worth it.
Keep in mind, La Izquierda is an advanced reef break, and it’s exposed, so it handles the swell well. The crowds are often a problem here, so for those good days, get out there early. The water temp is about what you’d expect for this time of year.
After the 26th, it fades away. The 27th and 28th drop back to tiny, and the 29th and 30th are flat. So, your window is the 23rd through the 26th. The afternoon of the 23rd and the mornings of the 25th and 26th are the best on offer.
Rusty.
