Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for La Izquierda.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week and a half is a bit of a flat spell. From Monday the 6th of July right through to the 16th, we’re looking at tiny, weak waves. The swell is barely there, mostly around 0.7ft to 2ft with a short period under 8 seconds, and the combined energy is often in the single digits or low teens – that’s basically nothing. It’s glassy or clean a lot of the time, which is cruel because there’s nothing to ride. You’ll see a bit of a bump on the 12th and 13th with the energy climbing to 38 (Sunday morning) and 55 (Monday morning), but it’s still only 2ft and the conditions are just “surfable but very ordinary.” Not worth paddling out for.
The real story, the one that’s got me a little excited, kicks off on Saturday the 18th of July. That’s when we finally see some life. The swell jumps up to 4ft from the NE with a combined energy of 217 – that’s moderate wave energy. Saturday morning is glassy with a slight air breeze, and the break is getting solid NE swell. The optimum swell direction for this reef is NW, so the NE is a bit off-angle, but with that much energy, it’ll still wrap in nicely. Saturday afternoon gets a bit bigger, 7ft, but the period drops to 6 seconds, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and disorganised. Still, for a reef break like this, that’s a lot of power.
Sunday the 19th of July is the standout. Morning sees 4ft from the NE with a period of 8 seconds, a clean offshore wind from the ESE, and combined energy of 247. That’s a proper session. The crowd is listed as “often” here, so expect some company, but when it’s clean and offshore at La Izquierda, it’s worth the crowd. The afternoon holds up at 5ft and 266 energy. The swell direction is NE, not the perfect NW, but it’s good enough.
Monday the 20th of July is another solid day. The morning gets a bit messy with onshore wind, but the afternoon is glassy with 5ft NE swell and 321 energy. That’s solid, moderate wave energy, and with glassy conditions, you’ll be getting some great waves. Beginners should be cautious – anything over 5ft on a reef can be a handful.
After that, it drops off again on the 21st back to tiny 1ft junk. So the window is clear: the 18th to the 20th of July is your time. The best of the best is Sunday the 19th morning – clean, offshore, and a decent 4ft swell. That’s the one to circle.
The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual to report.
So, get ready for a long wait, but that weekend in the middle of July will be worth it.
