The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks. To be straight with you, it’s a pretty grim run for Kennack Sands. This spot is a sheltered, inconsistent beginner wave at the best of times, and the forecast is serving up a whole lot of nothing for a long stretch.
We’re looking at a big gap here. From now, right through the middle of the month and beyond, it’s just one poor report after another. The wind is either cross-on or cross-off, and the swell is tiny, often non-existent. You’ll see a few days with a few feet or so of short-period, weak windswell from the east, but it’s messy and lumpy. The combined energy barely gets into three figures, and that’s a sure sign of weak, unshapely waves. Honestly, for the first week and a half, there’s nothing to get excited about.
There is a brief flicker of hope late on the 24th of July. The afternoon shows a little 4ft swell from the south, with a light cross-off wind from the west-southwest, and the combined energy sitting at 162. The report says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions," which is about as generous as I can be. It’s clean, but it’s hardly a standout.
The real event, if you can call it that, looks to be on the 22nd of July. We’ve got a jump in swell to 7ft in the morning from the east, with a period of 7 seconds, and the combined energy hits 452 – that’s moderate energy. The afternoon sees it peak at 8ft from the east, with a period of 7 seconds and a combined energy of 679. That’s a solid amount of water moving. But – and it’s a big but – the wind is fresh cross-onshore at 19 mph in the morning, and even though it turns light onshore in the afternoon, the swell is short-period and coming from the east, which is dead against the optimum for this break. Kennack is a sheltered spot, and that size with that wind will be a total mess. The report agrees, slapping it with "poor surf conditions." This is one for the experts only, and even then, it’s going to be a battle. It’s more likely to be a kite-surfing show than a paddle-surfing session.
The only other day that nearly gets a nod is the 28th of July. The afternoon offers a 5ft swell from the south, with a moderate offshore wind from the west-northwest. The combined energy is 118. It’s clean, but it’s weak, and the swell is short-period at 5 seconds. Not exactly the stuff of legends.
The water temperature is sitting at 67°F, which is a whopping 6° warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s very unusual – you’ll be surfing in a bath, but there won’t be much to surf.
So, to sum it up: there are no good surf options in this 16-day window. The one or two moments that look "surfable" are just that – barely surfable. Kennack is a break that can go quiet for long stretches, and this is one of those stretches.
