The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be honest, this is a tough one. We’re looking at Kennack Sands, and I’ve got to tell you straight up: the next 16 days are a real struggle for any kind of decent surf. The swell window is just not cooperating, and the energy is weak. There’s a big gap from now until the 19th of July where you’re not going to find anything worth paddling out for. Even then, the pickings are slim.
The water is sitting at 66°, which is a solid 5° warmer than you’d expect for this time of year. It’s a weird feeling – warm water but no waves to enjoy it.
The only real sniff of something happening comes on the 19th of July. Sunday morning brings a bit of swell. It’s an east swell around 5ft, but it’s short period at 6 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (117), but the wind is a cross-onshore from the east at 22 mph, so it’s going to be lumpy and messy. Sunday afternoon cleans up a little with lighter wind, but the swell drops to 4ft with the same short period. It’s still not great. Because of the poor shape and strong wind, this setup honestly looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Later in the period, on the 31st of July, we see a tiny wave from the SSW. It’s only 3ft, but the period is a bit better at 7 seconds. The wind is offshore from the NNW at 16 mph, which is the one positive. The break is sheltered and *inconsistent*, so catching one of those clean little waves will be a challenge. The energy is still weak (51). For a patient surfer, it might offer a few glassy, fun rides, but don’t expect much.
The rest of the window is flat. From the 20th through to the 30th, it’s mostly zeros. There’s a few days with a tiny 0.3ft groundswell, but it’s not enough to even register. A blank run like this is pretty normal for the area when the summer high pressure sits on top of us.
Keep your eyes on the charts, but for now, maybe it’s a good time to check the wax on your boards or have a sleep in. It tends not to stay this poor for long, so a change is bound to come.
Rusty.
