The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Kennack Sands.
To be straight with you, this is a tough stretch. The whole 16-day window is pretty much a write-off for any decent surf, and that’s a long dry spell. Kennack Sands is a sheltered spot, and it’s inconsistent at the best of times, so a blank run like this isn’t totally out of the ordinary for the area. The water is sitting at 66°F, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, if you’re thinking of a paddle.
The first few days, Friday the 17th through to the end of the first week, are flat. You’re looking at tiny dribbles of swell, barely pushing 1ft on the 17th, with a weak easterly wind swell and a period of only 5 seconds. The combined energy is a measly 9 (weak energy), and the wind is cross or cross-off, so while it’s clean, there’s just nothing to ride. From Saturday the 18th through Tuesday the 22nd, it’s virtually flat with combined energy values from 0 to 7.
We get a little bump on Sunday the 19th – 5ft from the east, but with a 22 mph cross-on wind, it’s going to be lumpy and messy. The combined energy hits 124 (moderate), but the wind ruins it. It’s not worth paddling out for that.
The second week remains a desert. Wednesday the 23rd through to the end of the month is all tiny, short-period wind swell or long-period groundswell pulses that are way too small and weak to do anything with. The wind is mostly cross-off or cross-on, so the surface is clean, but it’s like trying to surf a lake. The best you’ll see is a 1ft on the 23rd morning with 4 seconds period and 4 combined energy.
The one and only true standout that might raise an eyebrow is on Friday the 31st of July. The morning shows a solid 8ft from the ESE with a 7-second period, and a combined energy of 461 (strong wave energy). That’s a lot of water moving. However, the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-off, so it *could* be clean. But 8ft at a sheltered, inconsistent spot like Kennack Sands is really only for experienced surfers, and the short period means it’ll be a bit dumpy and walled up. The afternoon sees it drop quickly to 4ft and the wind swings cross. It’s the only time in the whole forecast that the swell gets above 5ft, but don’t get your hopes up too high.
So, honestly, I’d say leave the boards at home. There’s no real run of good surf. The forecasts can change, but right now, the only thing consistent is the lack of waves.
Rusty.
