The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – the outlook for Kennack Sands over the next sixteen days is a tough one. We’ve got a long, dry spell with nothing worthwhile on the cards for a good while. The first real chance of any surfable waves doesn’t show up until Sunday the 19th of July, and even then, it’s not looking great. The water is running much warmer than normal for this time of year, coming in at a very balmy 66°, so that’s a bit of a treat if you’re just going for a dip.
The first sniff of action comes Sunday morning, July 19th, with a tiny 2ft swell from the ESE, but it’s got a short, weak period of only 4 seconds and the wind is a cross-on breeze. The energy is weak (18). It’s just not going to be any good. The afternoon is a little bigger at 3ft from the same direction, but still poor. By Monday the 20th, it’s back to a pathetic 0.7ft, and we drift into a flat spell with no surf energy from the 21st of July through to the morning of the 22nd.
We do get a tiny pulse on Wednesday the 22nd of July – a 0.3ft wave from the south, but get this, the period is 16 seconds. That’s a very long period groundswell, but there’s almost no height to it. The energy is next to nothing (5). It’s a tease. The wind is cross-offshore though, so the water will be clean. But honestly, you’re not catching anything.
The pattern of tiny, weak swells continues. On Thursday the 23rd, we get a 1ft wave from the NE with a 3-second period (energy of 4). It’s just poor. The best-looking conditions in the whole window might be Friday the 24th of July morning, with a glassy 2ft wave from the east, but the period is a short 4 seconds and the energy is only 9. It’s too weak to push anything.
After that, it’s back to zilch. From the 25th of July right through to the end of the forecast period on August 2nd, there is zero surfable energy. The wind is either howling or onshore, and the wave heights are all flat. There’s a couple of days with a tiny 0.3ft bump from the south with long periods, but that’s just a ripple.
Bottom line: There are no good surf options in this 16-day window. Kennack Sands is an inconsistent, sheltered spot, and this run of flatness is a more normal reality for the area. When the tiny swells do show up, the period is too short to hold together, or the energy is non-existent. This setup looks more interesting for a paddleboard or a swim than a surfboard. Keep an eye on it, but don’t expect a wave.
Rusty.
