The Lowdown
Alright, I’m Rusty, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Kennack Sands. Gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch ahead. The whole 16-day window is pretty much a write-off for any proper surf. There’s a big gap from now until the 22nd of August where the waves are barely a ripple, and even then, it doesn’t really get going.
The first hint of anything rideable shows up on the morning of Saturday the 22nd of August. We’re looking at a tiny 2.6ft swell from the east, with a period of only 4 seconds. That’s super weak, short-period windswell, and the combined energy is a measly 44. It’s not gonna be any good. The wind is a gentle cross-shore, so it’s not blown out, but there’s just no power. The afternoon sees a similar 3.0ft from the east, period still a paltry 6 seconds, and energy at 50. It’s clean, but pathetic.
The rest of the run is nothing but “poor surf conditions.” You get a few pulses – like the 28th of August Friday afternoon where a 3.6ft swell from the SSW shows up with a period of 9 seconds and energy of 209, which is moderate energy. That’s the biggest number in the whole forecast, but it’s still a messy, chopped-up picture. The wind is cross-off, so it’s clean, but the wave quality is just not there. Then on the 2nd of September, Wednesday afternoon, we see a 4.9ft swell from the SSW, but it’s only 6 seconds period, so it’s fat and weak. The energy is 140, which is moderate, but again, it’s just not a surfing swell.
Honestly, for any session that might be worth paddling out for, you’d have to be a beginner just wanting to sit in the water. The water temp is 66.6°F, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least you won’t freeze waiting for a set that never comes. Kennack is a sheltered, inconsistent spot, and this forecast shows exactly why. It’s a blank run, and for this area, that’s pretty normal.
Forget it this time, mate. Keep the board in the shed.
