Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for Kennack Sands over the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, it's a tough stretch ahead. The outlook is pretty flat for the entire 16-day period. We're looking at a long, drawn-out run of tiny surf with nothing worth paddling out for. The combined swell energy barely registers, with most days sitting at a weak 3 to 8 (4, 4, 3, 6, 5, 8, 5, 4, 1). There's a slight uptick toward the end of the second week, with the energy nudging into the 20s and 30s (35, 33, 31, 28, 25, 27, 23), but even then, the wave heights are still stuck around 0.7ft to 2ft. It's just not enough to get excited about.
The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no weird surprises there.
The first real sign of something, and I use that term loosely, comes on Friday the 17th of July afternoon. The swell picks up a touch to 3ft from the east, with a short period of 7 seconds and a combined energy of 75. It's still "poor surf conditions" though, with a moderate cross-onshore breeze making it choppy. That wind is a killer for quality.
Saturday the 18th of July is a similar story. Morning sees 3ft from the east, but with that messy cross-shore wind. The afternoon cleans up as the wind swings to the north-northwest, becoming a moderate cross-offshore, but the swell drops off to 2ft. It's still poor surf, but it's the cleanest looking window in the whole run.
Sunday the 19th of July and Monday the 20th of July are the textbook definition of a tease. The wind is howling offshore from the northwest, which would be perfect if there was any swell. But we're stuck with 0.3ft from the south with a long period of 18 to 19 seconds. That's just a lake with a breeze.
The only break listed is Kennack Sands itself. It's a sheltered, inconsistent spot that rarely fires, and this forecast confirms it. For a beginner, even the 3ft on the 17th is too small and messy to be fun. For anyone else, there's just nothing to work with here. This blank run is pretty normal for this area when the conditions line up like this.
If you're desperate for a paddle, maybe the 18th afternoon offers the cleanest water, but don't expect a wave. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing if the wind holds.
Rusty.
