The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be honest from the get-go: this is a tough stretch for Kennack Sands. The whole 16-day window is a struggle, with only one single moment that even gets a borderline nod, and everything else is a write-off. The first run of usable surf doesn’t show up until the 4th of September, meaning there’s a long, frustrating gap from the start of the forecast right through the end of August with nothing worthwhile.
The pattern is dominated by messy cross-onshore winds and poor quality surf. Most days, even when there’s some swell in the water, the wind is tearing it apart. The combined wave energy for the first few days is weak to moderate at best, with values like 21 (weak) and 100 (moderate) on the 23rd afternoon, but it’s all blown out.
For a bit, from the 24th into the 25th, the swell does build, hitting 6 ft to 7 ft from the east, but it’s pinned by strong cross-onshore winds. The energy jumps up to 269 and then 569 on the 24th, which is moderate to strong, but the conditions are so messy it’s a waste. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing – the wind is strong and the waves are choppy, so if you’ve got a kite, you might have a go, but for a surfboard, forget it.
The only bright spot, and I mean the *only* one, is the afternoon of Friday the 4th of September. The wind finally swings offshore from the northwest, and we get clean 7 ft swell from the SSW. The period is 8 seconds, so it’s a bit of a short-period wind swell, but the energy is strong at 861. The data says it’s a marginal forecast, but honestly, with clean offshore wind and chest-to-head-high waves, that’s your standout. It’s not perfect, but it’s the best we’ve got in a very long dry spell. For a sheltered spot like Kennack Sands, seeing that size and direction with offshore wind is a proper treat. Water temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual to report.
Every other day is a bust. The 22nd through the 3rd are all scores of zero. The 4th morning is a 1 out of 10, but with clean conditions and a tiny 0.7 ft swell, it’s not worth paddling out for. The 5th and 6th are flat again. If you’re desperate, mark that Friday afternoon on the 4th of September, but keep your expectations low.
Rusty.
