The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve got to be straight with you – the next 16 days at Kennack Sands are a bit of a write-off for a proper paddle. There’s almost nothing on the cards that’ll get you excited. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor surf conditions, with only a couple of tiny windows that might get a beginner wet, but even then, it’s barely a splash.

Right now, starting Sunday the 19th of July, we’ve got a tiny 1.0ft to 1ft swell coming from the SE and ESE, with a weak combined energy of just 1 to 5. The wind is onshore or cross-onshore, so it’s pretty choppy and messy. That’s a no-go.

Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st are similar – tiny waves, 0.7ft to 1.0ft, weak energy, and cross-onshore breezes. Not worth paddling out.

Then we roll into Wednesday the 22nd of July. There’s a tiny bit of long-period swell from the south, with a period of 15 to 16 seconds, but the height is only 0.3ft. The energy is still weak (4 to 5), and the wind goes cross-offshore, which cleans it up, but there’s just no wave to ride. Same story on Thursday the 23rd – a tiny 2ft from the east, period of 5 seconds, and the energy finally climbs to 10-11. The wind goes glassy on Thursday afternoon, so it’ll be clean as a whistle, but the wave is still poor. A beginner might find a knee-high ripple, but it’s nothing to write home about.

Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th are a total blank for swell, with a combined energy of 0 to 1. The wind is off or cross-off, so it’s clean, but there’s literally no wave. That’s a long gap of nothing.

Sunday the 26th of July sees a tiny 0.3ft swell from the south again, with a period of 11 to 16 seconds, but the energy is just 2 to 8. The wind is a fresh 22 mph cross-offshore, so it’s clean but blown out. Still, no wave to speak of.

Monday the 27th through Wednesday the 29th is much the same – tiny scraps of energy, mostly 0.3ft, with clean offshore winds, but the swell height is just too small to surf. The combined energy never gets above 10. The best of the lot is Thursday the 30th of July, when we get a 1ft east swell with a period of 6 seconds and a combined energy of 10. The wind is cross-offshore, so it’s clean, but it’s still a tiny wave. That’s the only real standout, and it’s a very small one.

From Friday the 31st of July onwards, the wind goes bonkers – 25 to 31 mph cross-on, blowing the ocean flat and messy. The swell is gone. The rest of the first week of August is just cross-offshore winds with no swell, or messy cross-shore winds. No surf.

So, the honest truth: there’s nothing here for a surfer. The only tiny glimmer is Thursday the 30th of July, with a clean 1ft wave, but it’s tiny and weak. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, not really worth mentioning. Stick to the kites if you’re into that, because the wind will be up, but the waves are not.

Rusty.
