The Lowdown
Right then, let’s talk about the next couple of weeks here at Kennack Sands. To be straight with you, it’s a pretty bleak run. There’s no real swell to speak of for the first few days, and what little does show up is getting battered by the wind. The water temperature is sitting at 67°F right now, which is a solid 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s a very unusual anomaly, so you’ll be feeling that difference.
The first sniff of anything might be on Thursday the 16th of July. We’ve got a tiny 4ft swell from the east, but the wind goes glassy by the afternoon. The combined energy is weak (86), and the period is a short 6 seconds, so it’s not going to be a world-beater. It’s surfable, but it’s very ordinary. Still, a glassy window is a glassy window, and for a beginner or longboarder, you might get a few fun, wobbley ones.
After that, it’s a long, dry gap. The swell just fades away completely. From Friday the 17th right through to the end of the forecast on the 28th of July, the numbers are flat. We’re talking swell heights of 1ft or less, or simply no swell at all. The combined energy drops to zero for many days. There’s a couple of days with a long period groundswell signal from the south (19 seconds on the 19th, 16 seconds on the 21st), but the height is so tiny – 0.3ft – that it’s just a ripple. It’s a real blank run.
So, what’s the best on offer? Honestly, it’s that Thursday afternoon. There’s no standout. The rest of the time, the wind is mostly cross-on or onshore, often strong, and the swell is missing. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, if you’re into that. For a surfer, you’re looking at a long wait. The forecasts can change, but for now, the boards are staying in the car.
