The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for our local stretch.
Right off the bat, I’ve got to be straight with you – this outlook is a tough one. We’re looking at a long, quiet spell with hardly a wave worth paddling for. The water temperature is sitting at 67°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least the wait will be comfortable.
The only spot on the radar is Kennack Sands. It’s a sheltered, beginner-friendly break, but it’s also inconsistent. For the first nine days, from Monday the 17th of August right through to the 25th, it’s a complete write-off. We’re talking tiny, weak surf with combined energy values barely reaching 27 (weak energy), and the swell is just a whisper of 0.7 ft. The wind is mostly cross-off or offshore, keeping the surface clean, but there’s simply no power in the water to do anything with. It’s a frustrating blank run.
We hit a bit of a change on Wednesday the 26th of August. The afternoon sees a pulse of 4 ft swell from the south, with a short period of 6 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 104 (moderate), but it’s still a messy, short-period windswell, and the comment says “poor surf conditions.” The wind is a cross-off, so it’s not a total loss, but it’s nothing to get excited about. After that, we’re back to flat, glassy mornings and clean afternoons, but still no rideable swell. The offshore winds that pop up on the 29th and 30th of August are a tease – they’d be perfect if there was any swell.
In the end, there’s no standout day here. The forecasts can always change, but for now, the surf is just not on. It’s a good time to give the board a rest and enjoy the beach.
Rusty.
