    The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. I’ve been staring at this one spot, Guacimeta - Playa Honda, and I gotta be honest with you – it’s a tough stretch ahead. We’re looking at a solid 16-day window, but the start of it is a total write-off. For the first week and a half, there’s absolutely nothing to get excited about. The swell is flat, the charts are showing zero energy, and that persistent cross-offshore breeze is just going to ruin any chance of a ripple. You’re looking at a gap of about eight days where the surf is effectively non-existent. Don’t bother checking the cam.

From Saturday the 16th of August, we finally see a tiny pulse of swell. It’s a long-period groundswell from the south, with a period of 13 seconds, but the height is basically a ripple at 0.3 ft. The combined energy is a pathetic 4 (weak energy). It’s still showing “poor surf conditions” though, so don’t get your hopes up. The wind is still a cross-off, so it’s not exactly clean. This little blip of energy hangs around through the 17th and 18th, with that period stretching out to 15 seconds at one point, but the height never gets above 0.3 ft and the energy stays in the single digits. Honestly, it’s more of a water movement than a wave.

The standout in this whole forecast – and I use that term loosely – is the afternoon of Saturday the 22nd of August. The swell is still a tiny 0.3 ft from the south, with a period of 13 seconds, but the combined energy bumps up to a 6 (still weak). The wind is from the NNE at 16 mph, which is a cross-off. It’s not great, but it’s the best we’ve got. This break is a sheltered reef, inconsistent, and it’s looking for an ENE swell direction. We’re getting a south swell, so it’s a terrible angle match. The water temperature is around average for this time of year, so no worries there.

The rest of the period into the 23rd of August stays the same story: tiny, weak, and poor. For a spot like this, when it’s this quiet, it’s not unusual. The winds are moderate to fresh, and the setup is just not working. If you’re a kite surfer, the steady cross-off winds might be more interesting than paddling into the nothingness here. But for a surfboard, leave it at home.

This is Rusty, signing off. Keep your eyes on the horizon, but don’t hold your breath.
