The Lowdown

Right, let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Gongaza. This spot is sheltered, so it takes a bit of coaxing to get going. The water’s sitting at 69° right now, which is about 2° warmer than what you’d normally expect for this time of year – nothing crazy, but it’s a nice little bump.

We’re starting off with a bit of a quiet run. Tuesday afternoon (4th August) has a tiny 1ft SSE swell, glassy wind, but the wave comment says it’s poor. Not worth getting wet for. Wednesday morning (5th August) is the first real chance: a 2ft S swell at 11 seconds, glassy conditions, and the energy is just creeping into moderate territory at 115. It’s small, but clean. Wednesday afternoon gets messy with a cross-on wind, so that morning window is your only look.

Thursday (6th August) and Friday (7th August) are poor – tiny, short-period mush and choppy winds. Just leave the board in the car.

Now, Saturday morning (8th August) is where it starts to wake up. We’ve got 4ft from the S at 12 seconds, glassy, with a combined energy of 389 – that’s solid moderate. It’s still just “ordinary” conditions, but that’s the best we’ve seen so far. The afternoon pushes to 4ft SSE with a 14-second period, energy jumping to 587, but there’s an onshore wind and it’s marked as marginal. Could be worth a look if the wind holds off.

Sunday (9th) and Monday (10th) stay in the 3ft to 4ft range with onshore or cross-on winds. It’s surfable but messy. The real standout doesn’t come until Sunday morning, 16th August. That’s the one to circle. We’ve got 5ft SE swell at 12 seconds, clean cross-off wind from the ENE, and a combined energy of 718 – strong. The forecast says “expect good surf conditions.” That’s the pick of the run, no question. Just be aware that 5ft is getting a bit punchy for beginners, and the period is long enough that it might wall up at a beach break, but for an intermediate surfer at a sheltered spot like Gongaza, that’s a cracker.

The week after that drops back into average or poor conditions with onshore winds and shorter periods. A few 4ft to 5ft days around the 18th and 19th, but the wind is always against you.

So overall, the early mornings on Wednesday 5th and Saturday 8th are your best bets for clean, rideable waves, but the big highlight is Sunday morning 16th August – that’s the session to plan for.
