The Lowdown
G’day, this is Rusty, and I’ll be honest, the surf report is a tough one today. The next two weeks are looking seriously flat and disappointing. There’s no other way to put it—the swell is just not showing up. We’re looking at a long, drawn-out stretch of small, weak surf that’s going to have you wishing you’d taken up golf. I’d say we’re in for at least a week or more of barely a ripple.
The only break in the game is Flemming Beach Park, a beach and reef setup that’s fairly exposed. It’s consistent, but that doesn’t help when there’s no power behind it. Water temp is a warm 80°F, which is about normal for this time of year, so no need for a thick suit—just a whole lot of patience.
This Monday afternoon, the 17th, it’s flat out poor. A tiny 0.7ft swell from the west, cross-offshore ENE breeze at 15 mph, and the energy is a weak 10. There’s just nothing to surf.
Tuesday the 18th isn’t any better—0.7ft in the morning, maybe 1ft in the afternoon from the southwest with a longer 18-second period, but the energy is still pathetic (37 and 63). It’s clean, but clean and flat is still flat.
Wednesday the 19th sees a slight bump—the swell tries to push up to 2ft in the morning, but the period drops right off to a short, crumbly 6 seconds. By the afternoon, it’s 4ft from the northeast, but with that short period, it’s just messy and weak. Not what we’re after.
From Thursday the 20th through the rest of the week, it’s back to the same story. Swell heights hover around 1ft, periods in the 15-18 second range, but the energy is just too low. We get a brief nod towards “surfable” on Thursday and Friday mornings, but that’s being generous. It’s ordinary, at best.
The weekend and into next week is a write-off. The wind picks up from the east-northeast, getting fresh, but it’s cross-offshore, so the surface stays clean. The problem is the swell just fades. We’re looking at 1ft dropping to 0.3ft by Wednesday the 26th, with energy bottoming out to single digits. It’s dead. There’s a slight pulse around the 28th and 29th with a 1ft southwest swell and a long period, but the energy is still weak, nowhere near enough to break the flat spell.
For the entire 16-day window, there’s no standout. Not a single day I’d tell you to drop everything for. The swell direction is mostly from the southwest or west, which isn’t ideal, and the size just isn't there. The only thing you might be able to do is grab a longboard and enjoy the clean water on a few mornings, but you’ll be scratching for every crumb.
With things this flat at a fairly consistent break, it’s a bit of a bummer. It doesn’t often stay this poor for long, so I’d keep an eye on the charts, but for now, maybe give the board a rest. This stretch will test your patience.
Rusty.
