The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you — the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat for the Fernandina Beach Pier area. There’s not a single standout session in the whole 16-day window, and the first proper surfable wave doesn’t show up until nearly two weeks from now. Until then, it’s a long stretch of tiny, weak swells with poor conditions.
The water temperature is sitting at 85° right now, which is about a degree and a half warmer than usual for this time of year — nothing crazy, just a touch of that summer heat hanging in there.
We’ve got a massive gap of almost no surf. From now through the end of August and into the first days of September, the swell is tiny — mostly 0.7ft to 1ft — with periods all over the place, from a short 4 seconds up to a long 13 seconds. That long-period stuff on the 23rd and 24th might sound promising, but at 0.7ft it’s barely a ripple. Wave energy is weak, with values sitting between 15 and 82 — just a whisper of energy. Winds are often glassy or light offshore in the mornings, which is a positive, but there’s just nothing to ride.
The afternoons are even worse, with cross-onshore winds building chop and spoiling the tiny bumps. The best you can say is that a few mornings — like the 25th morning with glassy conditions and an east wind, or the 30th morning with a calm NE wind — look clean, but again, the swell is 1ft to 1ft. It’s a paddle float at best.
Finally, on Wednesday, 2nd September, the morning shows a slight pulse: 3ft swell from the SE with a 6-second period. The combined energy finally climbs to 90, and the wind is glassy. The guidance calls it “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” — it’s the first sign of life, but it’s still weak and short-period. The afternoon turns choppy again.
Thursday, 3rd September, brings a bit more: 5ft swell from the ENE in the afternoon, with energy hitting 146, but the period is only 6 seconds and the wind is a moderate cross-onshore. That’s going to be a messy, lumpy beach break. It’s small enough for beginners but not inviting for anyone else.
Friday, 4th September, drops back to tiny 2ft–2ft with weak energy again.
Look, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it — this is a tough run. The pier is a beach-and-pier setup, so it’s exposed to any swell, but there’s just no size or power. With the wind patterns and minimal swell, honestly, this setup is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on a few of those afternoons. For now, it’s a waiting game. Forecasts can change, and this area tends not to stay flat forever, but for the next two weeks, leave your board at home.
Rusty.
