The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve gotta be straight with you – this outlook for Fernandina Beach Pier is a tough one. We’ve got a long, flat stretch ahead with barely a ripple to get excited about. The whole 16-day window is a bust for decent surf, and most of that time you’ll be looking at tiny, weak waves with poor conditions. We’re talking about a real dry spell that runs from now, Sunday the 23rd of August, all the way through to Sunday the 7th of September. There’s no standout session, but a couple of mornings might just give you something to bob around on if you’re desperate.
The water temp is sitting at a warm 83°F right now, which is pretty much average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Now, for the first week, from Sunday the 23rd through to Monday the 31st of August, it’s a write-off. Tiny swell, mostly around 0.7ft to 3ft, with short, weak periods. The combined wave energy is pathetic, mostly in the teens to nineties (30 to 96). Winds are mostly cross-onshore or choppy, making it even worse. A few mornings like Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th have clean conditions with light cross-off or glassy winds, but the swell is so small it’s barely surfable. This setup is honestly more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer on those afternoons with a bit of breeze.
Moving into September, there’s a slight flicker. On Tuesday morning, the 1st of September, we get a pulse of groundswell from the ESE with a period of 16 seconds – that’s a long period. The combined energy is still low (77), but we finally have glassy conditions and a clean surface. The swell height is only 1.0ft, so it’s small, but that long period might wrap in a little better here. It’s surfable but very ordinary.
Then Wednesday the 2nd and Thursday the 3rd of September also offer mornings with some cleaner conditions. The swell picks up a touch to 2ft to 3ft, from the ESE and E, with periods around 11 to 13 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (120 to 145). Winds are light cross-off or offshore on Friday the 4th, with a 2ft ESE swell (116 energy). Still, these are ordinary waves, not worth making a special trip for. Saturday the 5th of September morning sees a tiny 2ft E swell with glassy calm winds (84 energy), but again, it’s nothing to write home about.
Honestly, the best on offer is Tuesday the 1st of September morning. It’s not big – only 1.0ft – but with that 16-second groundswell and glassy conditions, you might get a few clean little peelers. After that, Thursday the 3rd of September morning has a bit more size (3ft) and clean light winds, so that’s your second-best shot. But don’t expect barrels – it’s still weak.
Given how consistent the flatness is here, this blank run is pretty normal for the area. Forecasts can change, but for now, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
