The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight – this 16-day stretch for Fernandina Beach Pier is about as flat and frustrating as it gets. The swell is tiny, the wind is mostly messy, and the only half-decent moment is barely worth getting wet for. If you’ve got a kite, you might get more out of it than a surfboard.
Right now, through Sunday July 19th, we’ve got a weak 2ft SE swell with a short 5-second period and cross-shore wind. Combined energy is only 32 – that’s barely a ripple. The afternoon turns choppy with 15 mph cross-onshore wind. Monday and Tuesday stay tiny, with heights around 2–3ft and periods still under 6 seconds. Wind is mostly cross-on or cross-off, but the swell is just too weak to form anything rideable. Wednesday and Thursday bring a little more energy but still poor – Wednesday morning sees 1ft from ESE at 8 seconds, energy 11. The afternoon picks up to 4ft but period drops to 5 seconds, so it’s mushy and wind-affected.
The best in this whole window is Saturday July 25th morning. We get a glassy morning – wind drops to 3 mph from the west, dead calm. The swell is 2ft from ESE, period 8 seconds, and combined energy jumps to 103 – that’s moderate energy for once. But the wave comment still says “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s a beginner-friendly size, but with the swell direction from SE rather than the optimum NE, the pier won’t line up well. Still, if you’re desperate, that’s your best shot. The afternoon turns choppy again.
After that, it’s back to tiny, weak, and mostly onshore. Sunday July 26th has a faint ESE swell with 2–3ft, but energy up to 117 in the afternoon – still classified as “poor surf conditions.” The rest of the week into early August sees nothing above 2ft, periods mostly 8–9 seconds, and winds from the west or south that keep it clean but the swell is simply too small. Energy values stay in the teens to low 40s. By August 1st and 2nd, we’re looking at 2ft and 5-second periods – total dud.
So here’s the bottom line: the next 16 days offer no real surf. The only faint glimmer is July 25th morning, but even that is very ordinary. The pier is fairly consistent as a break, but when the swell is this weak and the wind is wrong, it just doesn’t fire. Hang tight – forecasts can change, and it won’t stay this poor forever.
