The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's be straight with you, this stretch of coast is looking pretty flat and quiet for the next couple of weeks. We've got a long run of tiny, weak swell with almost nothing to get excited about. The first real chance to even get wet for a decent wave kicks off about a week and a half away, so you'll be waiting a while.
The water is sitting at a warm 85°F right now, which is about 2°F warmer than usual for this time of year. That's a bit above average, so you'll be in a t-shirt and boardies if you do paddle out.
Let's talk about the only spot on the radar: Fernandina Beach Pier. It's a beach and pier setup, fairly consistent but it's an exposed spot, so it cops whatever's on offer. The swell direction from the ESE and SE is not doing us any favours at all. The whole first week, from Tuesday the 14th to Sunday the 20th, it's tiny knee-high 0.7ft to 1ft slop with periods between 3 and 9 seconds. The combined energy is weak, reading between 7 and 41—barely a ripple. The wind is a mixed bag, with a few clean mornings but the afternoons turning messy with cross-on breezes. It's a no-go zone for surfers. You'd be better off on a kiteboard some afternoons when the wind picks up, but even then it's marginal.
The second week doesn't get much better. From Monday the 21st through to Sunday the 27th, we're still looking at 1ft to 3ft of swell, but the periods stay short, mostly 4 to 8 seconds. The energy picks up a little, hitting 93 on Wednesday the 22nd afternoon, but it's still weak. The first real glimmer of hope comes on the morning of Thursday the 23rd. We get a clean 2ft from the SE with a period of 8 seconds and a gentle offshore wind from the WSW. The combined energy is 51, which is still low, but it's the best we've seen. The conditions are described as "surfable waves but very ordinary", so you'll be scratching for a small, weak wave. It's a beginner-friendly size, but don't expect any power.
Then, finally, on Tuesday the 28th afternoon, we have a standout. The swell bumps up to 3ft from the SE with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 161—moderate energy for this spot. The wind is forecast to be glassy, which is a massive positive. That means the surface will be clean, smooth, and perfect for a small wave. The wave state is "glassy". This is the best on offer across the entire 16-day outlook. It's still small, but for a longboard or a funboard, that Tuesday afternoon session on the 28th is your best bet. The morning of Wednesday the 29th also has a clean offshore wind, but the swell drops back to 1ft.
So, to wrap it up: the first week is a total write-off. The second week sees a few tiny, clean windows, but the real standout is that Tuesday afternoon the 28th at Fernandina Beach Pier. Glassy conditions and a touch of energy. It's not a classic, but it's your only decent call.
Rusty.
