Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Hey, Rusty here. Look, I’m gonna level with you – for the next two weeks, we’re looking at a pretty flat and frustrating stretch here at Fernandina Beach Pier. The forecast is full of tiny, weak swells and the wind is just not playing ball. There are no proper standouts, and nothing worth getting excited about for the next 16 days. The first real surfable session doesn't even show up until Sunday the 12th of July, and even then it’s described as just ‘very ordinary.’ That’s a long gap of almost 10 days with nothing but poor conditions. Let’s walk through it.
Right now, on Friday the 3rd of July afternoon, we’ve got a weak 2ft swell from the east with a short period of 8 seconds, and onshore wind from the east at 12 mph. It’s messy, with weak wave energy (89). The water is sitting at 85° which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. This is not your session.
Saturday the 4th of July starts with glassy conditions, but the swell is a pathetic 1ft from the ESE (energy of 41). Saturday afternoon gets a cross-shore wind, still tiny at 2ft. Sunday the 5th is the same story – small, weak, and ordinary. Monday the 6th sees a jump in onshore wind to 19 mph and the swell hits 4ft, but with a period of only 4 seconds (energy 63). That wind is blowing straight onshore, and the waves will be lumpy rubbish.
This pattern of small swell and poor wind continues right through to Saturday the 11th of July. There are brief moments of clean offshore winds in the mornings, like Tuesday the 7th and Wednesday the 8th, but the swell is microscopic – 1ft to 1ft. It’s just not enough to surf.
Finally, on Sunday the 12th of July morning, we scrape into something that’s ‘surfable’ but very ordinary. A 2ft ESE swell with a period of 8 seconds (energy 54) and a gentle offshore wind from the WSW at 9 mph. You might get some clean little ankle-biters. That’s the best we see. The rest of the week offers similar tiny, weak waves, with the afternoons ruined by onshore cross-shore winds that chop things up. The combined swell energy stays low – in the 20s to 80s range – never even hitting moderate.
Around Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th of July, the morning sessions again show ‘surfable but very ordinary’ conditions with 3-3ft and clean light cross-off winds. But the period is short (5-6 seconds) and the energy is still weak (79). It’s better than nothing, but that’s about all you can say.
Honestly, for an exposed beach break like this, the setup is more interesting for a kite surfer on those windy afternoons than for a paddle surfer trying to get a proper wave. We just don't have the size or the quality to call anything a standout. Keep an eye on the charts, but for now, leave the board in the car.
Stay salty,
Rusty
