The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's coming our way.
Honestly, it's a bit of a quiet stretch ahead. We're looking at a long run of tiny, weak surf with only a couple of brief windows where it might be worth a paddle. The first few days are all about small, poor waves, and it takes a while before we see any real energy.
We start off on Wednesday, August 19th, with tiny 1ft ESE swell, but the wind is off and the water is a warm 85°, which is about normal for this time of year. Still, it's just too small to get excited about. That pattern holds through the end of the week and into the weekend – tiny 0.7ft to 1.0ft swells, mostly clean in the mornings but with onshore winds kicking in during the afternoons. The energy is flat, with combined swell energy readings barely cracking 30 or 40 (37 to 58 range). Honestly, not much to work with.
The real blank patch hits Sunday, August 23rd, through the following week. The surf stays tiny, with combined energy often below 50, and the wind is a mess. By Thursday, August 27th, we finally get a tiny bit of life. The morning is clean but the swell is only 2ft. The afternoon sees a little bump with 2ft from the SE, light offshore winds, and the energy creeps up to 56. It's "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions" – you might get a couple of closeouts, but it's not going to be a classic.
The most promising window comes right at the end. On Friday, August 28th, the morning is glassy with 2ft ESE swell and energy hitting 66. That's a real chance for a clean, small wave session on a longboard. Then, the real standout is Tuesday, September 1st. The morning is glassy again with 4ft of E swell, and the energy is moderate at 134. That's the best combo of size and conditions we've got. But the afternoon goes to hell with a strong onshore wind and a bigger 4ft E swell that jumps to a very strong 570 energy – that's powerful, but blown out and messy. That's only for the experts if they're desperate.
So, for the whole 16-day window, the best bet is the glassy mornings on Friday, August 28th, and Tuesday, September 1st, at Fernandina Beach Pier. On Tuesday the 1st, you'll have 4ft of E swell, and with the glassy conditions, it'll be the cleanest waves on offer. Crowds are possible there, but it should be worth it. There's just nothing else that truly stands out.
Stay patient, and keep an eye on the forecasts.
Rusty.
