The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. Rusty here.
First up, we’re looking at Fernandina Beach Pier. The water temp is sitting at 84°, which is about 1° warmer than average for this time of year – just a touch of that summer warmth.
Right now, the surf is tiny. We’re talking 0.7ft of weak, short-period swell from the ESE, with a combined energy of just 10. It’s glassy out there this Friday morning, but honestly, there’s nothing to ride. The whole first week is a struggle. We’ve got a long stretch of poor conditions, with hardly any real push. The swell stays small, mostly under 3ft, and the period is short – 5 to 8 seconds – so it’s just weak, choppy slop. The wind is mostly cross or cross-on, with a few clean spells, but there’s no power behind it.
The best we can say is that Thursday morning, the 23rd of July, shows a tiny 2ft swell from the SE with an 8-second period and a combined energy of 53. The wind is light cross-off, so it’s clean, but the waves are still very ordinary. It’s a small window of something that’s technically surfable, but it’s not going to get the heart racing.
The second week doesn’t bring much relief. Saturday the 25th of July morning has a similar 2ft ESE swell with clean conditions, but still weak. The afternoon gets a little bigger – 4ft from the SE – but the wind is cross-on and choppy, and the period drops to 5 seconds. That’s a messy, short-period windswell, and the combined energy hits 110, which is still only moderate. Not a good look.
Sunday the 26th of July afternoon sees a shift with offshore wind from the WNW at 15 mph, cleaning things up nicely. The swell is only 2ft from the SSE, period 5 seconds, so it’s a clean but small and weak wave. Then Monday the 27th of July morning also has moderate offshore wind, but again, the swell is tiny – 1ft, 6 seconds.
There’s a real gap in quality here. Nothing stands out as a true standout. The whole 16-day window is a flat, weak stretch with very little to offer. The setup is a beach/pier, so when the swell is this small and short-period, it’s just not going to break with any shape. If you’re desperate for a paddle, the cleanest windows are those Thursday and Saturday mornings, but keep expectations low.
This is a quiet period for the area. It’s not unusual to see a run like this in summer. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d be looking for other things to do.
Rusty, signing off.
