Alright, Rusty here, checking in on the local surf scene. Let's be straight with each other – it's looking like a tough stretch ahead for Fernandina Beach Pier.
Over the next 16 days, we're stuck in a pattern of tiny, weak swell. The combined energy never really gets cooking, with most readings sitting in the double digits or low triple digits, like 14 (weak energy) to 77 (weak energy) at its best. That's a lot of time with the ocean looking flat and lackluster. There are a few glimmers, like on Monday the 13th afternoon when the combined energy bumps to 118 (moderate energy), but it's paired with poor conditions. Honestly, for a beach/pier setup like this, the biggest issue is that the swell is consistently small, and the wind is often onshore or cross-onshore. That's a recipe for nothing special.
The water temperature is around 85°F with an anomaly of 2°F, so it's running a touch warmer than normal for this time of year—something to keep in mind if you're paddling out in a spring suit.
Now, if I had to pick the least bad moments, they'd be on Friday morning, July 10th, and Sunday morning, July 12th. On Friday the 10th morning, we have a small 1ft swell from the ESE (period 8 seconds) with light cross-offshore wind from the SW at 6 mph. Conditions look clean, and the combined swell energy is 50 (weak). It's not exciting, but it's the best of a bad bunch. Then Sunday the 12th morning offers a touch more size at 2ft from the SE (period 8 seconds) with a gentle offshore wind from the WSW at 9 mph. The combined energy is 52 (weak), and it says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions." On Sunday afternoon, the wind goes glassy with 3ft swell from the SE (period 8 seconds) and combined energy of 77 (weak). It'll be clean, but tiny. These sessions are really for the die-hards who just need to get wet.
For the rest of the period, we've got a lot of poor surf conditions. A couple of mornings, like Thursday the 16th, have a moderate offshore wind with 2ft swell, but it's from the SE with a period of just 5 seconds. That's short-period, weak, and wind-affected. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, honestly, with the onshore winds and small, lumpy surf.
Don't hold your breath for a standout session. The forecast is bleak, but as we know around here, it tends not to stay poor for long and forecasts can change.
Rusty.
