The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at the stretch ahead for us here at Fernandina Beach Pier. I gotta be straight with you – this forecast is a tough one. There’s a long, quiet gap right at the start. The first few days, from Sunday the 19th through to the morning of Thursday the 23rd, are basically a write-off. We’re looking at small, weak, short-period windswell getting torn up by onshore or cross-shore breezes. The wave energy is struggling to get out of the double digits or low three digits (39 to 80), and the period is a pathetic 4 to 6 seconds. It’s choppy, messy, and honestly, not worth paddling out for.
Thursday morning, the 23rd, things finally start to look a little more human. We get a light cross-offshore breeze from the southwest at 9 mph, cleaning up the face. The swell is still small, only 2 ft from the southeast, but the period bumps up to 8 seconds, and the energy is a modest 64. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. The water is warm, sitting at 85°F, which is a bit above the norm for this time of year.
The real standout, the only time I’d get excited, is actually on Sunday afternoon, the 26th of July. The combined energy jumps to a solid 120, which is moderate wave energy. We’ve got a 3 ft swell from the southeast, but the key is the period – 8 seconds – and a light cross-offshore breeze from the west-northwest at just 6 mph. That’s clean. It’s not a big day, but it’s the best we’ll see. The southeast swell direction is a little off from the pier’s optimum northeast, but for a small, clean wave, it’ll be a fun surf.
After that, we slide back into a long, quiet spell. The rest of the 16-day window is filled with minimal swell, mostly under 2 ft, and light offshore winds. The energy drops dramatically, often into the teens or twenties. The waves are just too small to do anything with. The morning of Sunday, August 2nd, shows a little blip of energy (113) with a 3 ft swell, but the wind is fresh and the conditions are quickly described as ordinary. It’s a long, frustrating run for the next week and a half. For a spot that’s fairly consistent, this is a real lull, but forecasts can change.
Alright, that’s the long and short of it. Keep your eyes on the 26th, and maybe the 2nd of August for a small glimmer. Otherwise, the board might stay in the car.
Rusty.
