The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve got the lowdown on the next 16 days for our local stretch.
Well, folks, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – this is a tough run. The forecast shows a long, quiet spell with precious little to get excited about until the very end of the month. We’re looking at a solid week of tiny, weak swell with mostly poor conditions. From now through the 26th of August, the surf is essentially flat and bumpy, with most days blown out by onshore winds. You’ll see a few early mornings with glassy conditions and a puff of offshore wind, but the swell is just too small – barely a ripple – to make it worthwhile. It’s a frustrating stretch.
Then, there’s a glimmer. On the morning of Thursday, the 27th of August, things start to look up at Fernandina Beach Pier. The water temp is about average for this time of year. We’ve got a groundswell filling in from the SE at 1 ft, with a very long period of 13 seconds. That’s some real energy, with a combined swell energy of (253) – moderate energy, but the biggest pulse we’ve seen. The wind is a light offshore from the W, which will groom the face clean. This is the standout of the whole forecast. Just keep in mind, with that long period, this beach break might get a bit walled and straight, but it’s the best chance we’ve got. The morning is the time to be there.
The good news fades quickly. That afternoon, the wind swings onshore and the quality drops. The rest of the window into September is a mix of small, messy, onshore slop, with a few more pulses of moderate energy (100-128) but the onshore wind ruins any chance of quality. The entire first week of September looks like a write-off for a proper paddle.
So, if you’re itching, pencil in the morning of Thursday the 27th. Otherwise, it’s a long wait for the next real swell.
